Overview

With NPM, OS/390® users can closely monitor and control their network infrastructure and its impact on day-to-day business. In addition to the ability to analyze network activities, NPM monitors, records, and interactively reports network communication, performance, and utilization. With its ability to provide network tuning information, support problem determination tools, and support for multiple protocols, NPM offers a universally accepted network performance management tool for today's heterogeneous networks.

What's New in This Version

Tightly integrated with Tivoli® NetView® for OS/390, NPM represents another huge advance in the network management capabilities offered by Tivoli's OS/390 product suite. V2.6 of NPM includes the following new capabilities:

  • New SNMP alerts provide enhanced support for Cisco routers and APPN® sessions
  • Enhanced APPN interface statistics
  • New support for Cisco CIP
  • Cisco IP to LU mapping
  • Usability enhancements to the 3270 display panels
  • Recovery of the SNMP router collection on TCP/IP failure
  • Recovery of GUI Interface Connection on TCP/IP failure
  • Ability to launch the Java™ GUI from the NetView Management Console

Key Benefits

These enhancements to NPM only add to the network management benefits users already enjoy:

  • Network performance and utilization information provides the needed data to support service-level agreement.
  • Network elements that cause performance problems can be easily identified or eliminated.
  • Network changes can be justified using definitive network data.
  • NPM can, in conjunction with Tivoli NetView for OS/390, take automatic action based on performance information.

Key Prerequisites

Either of the following software is required:

  • OS/390 V2R5 (5655-A29), or later
  • z/OS V1R1 (5694-A01)

Description

New in V2.6

Tivoli NPM represents another leap forward in the management capabilities offered by Tivoli's suite of OS/390 products. New capabilities have been added to NPM's principal management functions, confirming it as the management tool of choice for today's heterogeneous networks.

NPM V2.6 strengthens and enhances the existing support already provided with the following additions.

SNMP Router Alerts

In addition to collecting SNMP Routers data, NPM can also monitor the collected data in relation to specified thresholds. When starting the collection, thresholds are specified. It's possible to change them with the alter collection command. When thresholds on routers are set to be activated, NPM generates alerts to NetView.

The following counters are monitored:

  • CPU usage percentage for IBM routers
  • CPU busy percentage for Cisco routers
  • APPN memory usage percentage for IBM routers
  • Global buffers usage percentage for IBM routers
  • Memory pool usage percentage for Cisco routers (individual Cisco memory pool usage)
  • Interface utilization percentage (individual interface throughput)
  • Percentage of packets received on the interface and discarded
  • Percentage of packets sent by the interface and discarded

Dynamic Data Display 3270 Panels

The Dynamic Data Display function allows users to display data on 3270 panels without waiting for a collection interval. The data is automatically refreshed and displayed on the screen when the user presses the enter key. The following predefined PF keys are provided:

  • NCPs
  • Routers
  • Lines (SDLC)
  • Applications
  • Terminals (SNA and TCP/IP)

This function is supported with new PF keys which are accessed in the same way on each panel. You may also access the Dynamic Data Display using the following paths:

  • The new command DYNamic from the output review panel
  • The fast path = 1.8 (Network Management) or = 2.4 (Response Time Management)

Recovery of SNMP Router Collection on TCP/IP Failure

An SNMP task is restarted when TCP/IP recovers after a failure and if any SNMP Router collection was active. The collection is then recovered.

Cisco IP to LU Mapping Support

NPM can retrieve IP to LU mapping information for TN3270/TN3270E clients connected into a S/390® via a Cisco TN3270E server.

Renaming of Labeled Items in 3270 Panels

Labels in the 3270 panels have been renamed to more meaningful and understandable labels.

Display APPN Interface Data

This functionality enables NPM V2.6 users to receive information on how much of the capacity for an interface was being used for APPN traffic. Most routers that support APPN have implemented the APPN_MIB. One of the tables in this MIB, Link Station, provides traffic counts and an index to the entry where the corresponding traffic flows. This can be used to determine what portion of the adapter was being specifically used for APPN traffic.

Recovery of GUI Interface Connection on TCP/IP Failure

When TCP/IP recovers after a failure, NPM 2.6 allows reconnection with a GUI Console without an NPM stoppage.

Cisco CIP Support

This enables the NPM V2.6 user to gather Cisco CIP management data.

Launching the NPM Java GUI from NetView Management Console (NMC)

This support provides further integration of NPM with NetView for OS/390.

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

Euro Currency

This program is not impacted by euro currency.

Compatibility: Tivoli NPM is supported only in conjunction with other NPM V2 licensed programs for NPM to NPM communication. NPM to NPM communication is not supported between NPM V1 and NPM V2.

Planning Information

Direct Customer Support: Tivoli Services plans to provide fee-based services for Tivoli NPM. These services focus on a rapid installation and introduction of NetView Performance Monitor in a customer's information technology environment.

Security, Auditability, and Control

The announced program uses the security and auditability features of both NPM and RACF OS/390 Security Server.

The security and auditability features of the announced program are:

  • Minimal — NPM only checks the operator ID to see if it is identified to NPM and not already logged on.
  • Normal — NPM checks operator ID, password, and profile. The profile can limit what the operator is allowed to do.
  • RACF — RACF checks operator ID and password. The profile is checked by NPM. (RACF is called by use of the SAF interface.)
  • User — This security option allows an NPM user exit routine to be written to provide special ID and password validation, or it may be written to invoke an OEM security routine, other than RACF.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
