Overview
OS/390® SCLM Suite, in conjunction with IBM's OS/390 SCLM feature,
provides applications developers with an OS/390-based repository for all
enterprise source code and other development artifacts using browser
technology to access the software life cycle. Source code management and
secure production turnover are provided on a platform-independent basis
through standard browser networking technologies. IBM's SCLM Suite
includes a feature to migrate source code from Computer Associates'
Endevor for OS/390 product to IBM's SCLM for OS/390. IBM's OS/390 SCLM
Suite is the best choice for an attractively priced and fully functional
centralized System/390® SCM solution which can support application
development.
IBM and Rational Software previously announced their SCM Alliance in
February 2000. This announcement positioned Rational ClearCase and
ClearQuest as the recommended SCM solution for distributed environments
and the Linux for S/390 platform. The IBM OS/390 SCLM Suite, announced
today, is IBM's centralized OS/390 SCM product solution.
Highlights of the tools suite are:
-
OS/390 SCLM Suite along with OS/390 SCLM provides:
-
A Web-based e-business solution for applications developers, Web
developers and managers responsible for applications development.
-
Source management and secure production turnover on a platform
independent basis through standard Web browser network topology.
-
Distributed UNIX and Windows NT development through a centralized
SCLM OS/390 solution.
-
OS/390 SCLM Suite consists of two products:
-
IBM Breeze for SCLM for OS/390
-
IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for OS/390
IBM Breeze for SCLM for OS/390 is a browser-based approval product for
packaging and controlling software packaging and release management.
OS/390 Breeze for SCLM is integrated with SMTP e-mail for notification
and allows developers and managers to manage and approve development from
standard browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet
Explorer.
IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for OS/390 provides access to applications from a
Web browser and provides IT application developers with an easy-to-use
graphical interface for updating and modifying their application code.
This design eliminates logging on to ISPF to access SCLM. IBM Cloud 9
for SCLM for OS/390 can also be used to access workstation files such as
HTML files, Java programs, documents, spreadsheets, and other files
from an OS/390 SCLM system. Additionally, IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for
OS/390 provides an option to migrate source code from Computer
Associates' Endevor product to IBM's SCLM product.

Description
IBM Breeze for Software Configuration and Library Manager (SCLM) for
OS/390 provides a facility to:
-
Build software release packages
-
Assign approvers
-
Notify approvers of pending packages
-
Provide managers with a Web interface for package approvals
IBM Breeze for SCLM for OS/390 enhances the core source management
package processing capabilities of OS/390 SCLM by delivering
best-of-breed packaging and release management functionality.
By enhancing IBM OS/390 SCLM's proven technology and extending it to the
Web, IBM Breeze for SCLM for OS/390 provides a solution for both
developers and managers who are looking to leverage OS/390 SCLM's
strengths as a powerful development and source management system. Just a
few years ago, IT managers and mainframe applications developers did not
necessarily need Web access or e-mail notifications for packaging and
approvals, but today e-mail is an essential communication tool. IT
managers want and need the ability to perform administrative task from
remote locations. IBM Breeze for SCLM for OS/390 incorporates e-mail
based notifications with a browser-based interface allowing the review,
interrogation and query of packages. Managers have the opportunity to
approve or deny source changes.
IBM Breeze for SCLM for OS/390 improves an organization's productivity by
allowing it to:
-
Streamline its in-house approval procedures, and achieve system-wide
accountability for source changes migrated into production
-
Build software release packages which can be managed and re-used
throughout the life cycle
-
Collect and store approver data automatically and notify all relevant
approvers when there are packages to be approved
-
Enforce the approval and promotion process ensuring all relevant
approvals are obtained before promotion or production turnover
-
Initiate approvals remotely or from regionally separated corporate
locations
-
Approve or veto SCLM packages online
-
View Approver "ballot box" online to view all votes cast
IBM Cloud 9 for Software Configuration and Library Manager (SCLM) for
OS/390 is a fully functional Web-based extension to OS/390 SCLM which
provides a single graphical interface for development, both inside and
outside of OS/390 SCLM, on the OS/390 operating system. IBM Cloud 9 for
SCLM for OS/390 provides programmers with a powerful tool for performing
all key SCLM actions and editing from a familiar and easy-to-use
Web-based front-end. IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for OS/390 connects remote
internet or intranet users to their legacy systems via Netscape Navigator
or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Utilizing existing Web technology, a WebSphere Application Server, and
the source management capabilities of OS/390 SCLM, IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM
for OS/390 allows developers distributed access to the programmer
functions of OS/390 SCLM without having to log on to ISPF. Programmers
can now access their legacy application inventory regardless of the
location or host-based licensing restrictions. IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for
OS/390 allows organizations to take advantage of the security and
stability of OS/390 SCLM and the OS/390 platform from their internet
browser.
Although multiple users can access IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for OS/390
simultaneously, only one copy of the application is installed on a
company's OS/390 mainframe. This design allows for centralized upgrades
and ensures each user has access to the current version of the software.
When a browser sends a request for IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for OS/390 to the
mainframe, the current version of the application is delivered to the
browser via an OS/390 HTTP server.
The browser-based interface to IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for OS/390 allows
managers and SCLM administrators to e-mail hyperlinks to both in-house
and remote developers. IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for OS/390 is launched by
simply clicking on the embedded e-mail link. IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for
OS/390 provides users with two options for viewing, browsing, or editing
members and PC files stored in OS/390 SCLM (in a browser or a PC file).
This is important for non-text files stored in OS/390, but traditionally
built into PC or UNIX-based file systems.
Publishing documents on the Web server is a way of ensuring the most
up-to-date information is readily available to all types of users. With
IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for OS/390, any documentation can be stored in
OS/390 SCLM, including Lotus® 123, Microsoft Word Documents, PowerPoint
Presentations, Lotus Freelance®, and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. For
example, most IT groups have documents pertaining to procedures and
activities such as contact lists, project plans, or requirements for
upcoming tasks. IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for OS/390 can upload these files
into SCLM as well as simultaneously send them out to a company's Web
server. This feature allows IT managers to place critical documents in a
central location, and allows users to access the most current project
documents. Security options are available to ensure only designated
individuals have access to these files.
One of the challenges to using an OS/390-based change management tool for
distributed objects is that the naming standards on the OS/390 are
limited and usually not case sensitive. IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for OS/390
provides long name support between platforms' naming standards, allowing
for both case and non-case sensitive conditions. Utilizing the IBM Cloud
9 for SCLM for OS/390 interface and a standard Web browser, users can
perform all key OS/390 SCLM actions and enhanced OS/390 SCLM functions
from virtually anywhere.
IBM Cloud 9 for SCLM for OS/390 improves an organization's productivity
by allowing it to:
-
List OS/390 SCLM members names and inventory locations that meet specific
search criteria
-
Perform all key OS/390 SCLM line commands, members, and SCLM functions
using enhanced query functions
-
Perform all standard OS/390 SCLM actions
-
View, create, and submit SCLM packages
-
Perform combination actions
-
Create packages and interface with IBM Breeze for SCLM for OS/390
-
Use enhanced listing functions
-
Use enhanced query functions
-
Retrieve prior level or version
-
Utilize long name support to store non-host objects (such as PC and UNIX
files) in SCLM
-
Add/delete members to existing packages
-
Build new packages or re-use existing packages
-
Access PC files from an OS/390 system
-
Support remote product development
-
Migrate existing SCLM location, UNIX, or PDS to SCLM
-
Migrate source code from CA's Endevor product to IBM's SCLM for OS/390
Year 2000
These products do not have date dependencies and are, therefore, Year
2000 ready.
Euro Currency
These programs are EuroReady.
For more information on the implications of the euro, visit the IBM euro
Web site at:
EuroReady Products
IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in
accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly
processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the
euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This
assumes that all other products (for example, hardware, software, and
firmware) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM
hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro
sign key on their keyboards.
Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to
the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are
deemed to be "not ready" for euro unless otherwise stated in the
product's country-specific specifications.
IBM Hardware Ready
IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third party software
(pre-loaded or not) and/or third party attached hardware. In these
instances IBM is not in a position to assert that these third party
products are, in themselves, EuroReady.
Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as Hardware ready.
EuroReady Solutions
IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers
have:
-
Analyzed the euro requirements, including the need to comply with
relevant EC rules
-
Built in appropriate function
and can clearly demonstrate this by:
-
Detailing euro related requirements
-
Describing how these will be implemented in the solution
-
Declaring when the implementation will be generally available
The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified
as features of the Solution specification as described in the contracts
document.
