Description
New for MQSeries
New MQSeries for Solaris, Intel Platform Edition, V5.1 exploits the
features of Solaris running on Intel machines. Adding this new platform
to the MQSeries environment puts you in a better position to incorporate
enhancements in the MQSeries family of products.
Key MQSeries V5.1 Features
-
Support for multiple queue managers
-
Cluster (or groups) of queue managers
-
Dynamically share workload
-
Balance workload
-
Reroute workload if a system component fails or network path becomes
unavailable
-
Multithreaded application support
-
Support for Oracle databases and BEA Tuxedo
-
A maximum queue size of 2G bytes will allow many large messages to be
placed on a queue
-
Low amount of memory used by clients and channels, allowing many clients
and channels to be used before memory use becomes a constraint
-
Messages passed outside of syncpoint between applications on the same
queue manager incur a low resource cost to process each message
-
Data conversion tables which support character sets containing the Euro
character are included
Dynamic Workload Distribution:
MQSeries support for clusters makes managing networks of queue
managers much simpler. The idea of a dynamic workload distribution of
queue managers allows the creation of public queues and channels.
The same simple programming model means that a message is put to a single
named queue. However that queue may exist as several equivalent queues
on different queue managers with each message being routed to just one of
them. If one destination becomes unavailable or unreachable then an
alternative is used, without the sender of the message being required to
take any action.
The dynamic workload distribution concept can also be exploited for fault
tolerant and parallel processing. Multiple network paths and multiple
queues can be defined and used to provide hot standby and extra capacity.
Publish/Subscribe:
Publish and Subscribe, sometimes known as Event Services, enables
users to register interest in particular sets of information and then to
receive such information when it becomes available.
Application programs can operate as publishers or subscribers on Sun
Solaris, Intel Platform Edition, over MQSeries using a Publish/Subscribe
broker on one of the broker supported platforms.
Administration:
Remote administration is supported through the MQSeries Explorer, an
element of MQSeries for Windows NT, V5.1. A GUI aids in administering
the elements of your MQSeries network, including MQSeries for Solaris,
Intel Platform Edition. Support for multiple queue managers offers
increased flexibility in configuration. Queue manager clustering
simplifies administration significantly. You may also manage with the:
-
Programmable Command Format (PCF) command line feature
-
Web Administration feature
-
One of the many third-party system management products
Scalability of MQSeries applications on the Sun Solaris, Intel Platform
Edition is improved by increases in message and message queue size.
MQSeries Bindings for Java and support for multithreaded programs
assist in integrating MQSeries into advanced e-business applications.

Planning Information
The price model for MQSeries base products is structured over multiple
tiers, which are defined by the number of processors or processor group
on which the MQSeries product will be installed for use. It uses a
single charge unit, the Capacity Unit, as the means of charging. This
unit has no direct relationship to machine capability: it is a charging
authorization term only. Additional Capacity Units are required as you
move to larger systems or add new systems.

Group A, B, or C but cannot be transferred between the three groups.
MQSeries generic Capacity Units are not transferable to other MQSeries
family products covered by MQSeries Integrator Capacity Units and
MQSeries Workflow Capacity Units.
Customer Responsibilities:
The customer must provide the minimum hardware and software
environments in which the licensed program can operate.
The customer must identify the machines on which they will install
MQSeries. The customer or program provider will identify the capacity
unit tier in which they fit, and then calculate the level of capacity
unit charge for the required use authorization.
Problem determination (PD) is a customer responsibility. PD is an
assessment of whether a problem is caused by hardware or software. PD is
complete only when the cause of the problem is identified. This
assessment includes examination of available symptoms using the PD
procedures documented in the product.
Problem source identification (PSI) is a customer responsibility. PSI
begins when software is determined to be the source of the problem. PSI
includes tracing the source of the program to a host system control
program (SCP), an application program, or another source. Assisting the
customer with PSI is an IBM service and support responsibility.

MQSeries base server products use a flexible pricing structure. The new
pricing structure simplifies the development and management of complex
applications, particularly for large organizations.
There is only one charge unit for these MQSeries base server products:
the Capacity Unit.
For this offering the price model is structured over tiers that are
defined by processor groups. The higher the group, the higher the tier
position and the more use authorization needed to use the program. This
applies to each machine and machine upgrade. A two-pack Capacity Unit
Use Authorization is included with the program package. Acquire
additional capacity units separately.
