Overview

Companies need to implement e-business integration rapidly. MQSeries® messaging is a simple way to couple systems and applications together. This allows Internet users, and other applications, controlled access to existing data, such as account transactions.

Business integration across many applications is a common element of successful implementation. Other MQSeries family members, such as MQSeries Integrator and MQSeries Workflow, give you the tools to add value outside the basic message queuing paradigm.

MQSeries, Version 5.2 brings new enhanced performance levels and extends the set of supported platforms. Now MQSeries supports many offerings of Linux, including Caldera OpenLinux, Red Hat, SuSE, and TurboLinux, as well as support for Microsoft™ Windows™ 2000.

Operation is also added on a new release of Sun Solaris and for existing releases of AIX®, HP-UX, AS/400®, and Windows NT™.

Applications can operate as publish/subscribe brokers on all these platforms (except AS/400 and Linux), using a product extension (available from the MQSeries Web pages), and as publishers or subscribers on any of the platforms.

A new Linux client and a Java™ client for S/390® are introduced as product extensions, with availability in the same timeframe. MQSeries classes for Java Message Service (JMS) are packaged with the products.

Messaging performance is enhanced, with improvements in throughput of up to 10 times in some scenarios. Other important new features, such as enhanced Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) support, are added to the products.

A new Capacity Unit table applies to all MQSeries Version 5.2 platforms and also to all new orders for other base MQSeries products priced by Capacity Units. (Refer to the Planning Information section.)

A new capacity unit table applies to all MQSeries Version 5.2 platforms. (Refer to the Planning Information section.)

Description

MQSeries Family

e-business is accelerating the pace of change. Speed to market and quality of service are critical for success so companies need to be agile to survive. The MQSeries family provides a versatile platform for e-business.

  • MQSeries — is the core of the MQSeries family — the base messaging servers and clients provide once, and once only, message and queuing capability on more than 35 platforms.
  • MQSeries Adapter Offering — provides a framework and tools that build and customize MQSeries adapters for existing and new, prepackaged or custom-developed applications.
  • MQSeries Everyplace — extends the capabilities of MQSeries base messaging to mobile workers using laptops, PDAs, and telephones. It brings all the benefits of MQSeries messaging, including rock-solid security, to a failure-prone environment.
  • MQSeries Integrator — combines a one-to-many connectivity model, plus transformation, intelligent routing, and information flow modeling. It facilitates the development of new application services that comprise the functions of multiple, disparate existing business systems.
  • MQSeries Workflow — a business process management system that facilitates the rapid development and management of the business processes that integrate the IT and organizational infrastructure of a company.

MQSeries, Version 5.2

MQSeries, Version 5.2 brings new performance levels, extended platform support, and important new features to the successful MQSeries messaging family. MQSeries now supports many offerings of Linux with the V2.2 Kernel as well as offering full support for Microsoft Windows 2000.

Performance Improvements

  • For non-persistent messages, processing times have been optimized to give up to a 50% increase in throughput.
  • For persistent messages, code improvements have allowed more parallel operation, resulting in throughput improvements of up to 10 times.
  • MQSession establishment and destruction is improved by enhancing the MQConnect and MQOpen so that sessions dealing with a small number of messages have reduced elapsed time by a factor of 10.
  • A new option for the listener on AS/400 allows up to six times the number of clients to be attached compared with the previous version.

Further New Features: WebSphere support is extended in the use of POSIX Draft 10 threads on AIX and as an XA coordinator on UNIX® platforms.

Dynamic Workload distribution now has full DHCP Support, which also enables simpler configuration on DHCP machines.

Microsoft Transaction Server support is now integrated into the MQSeries for Windows NT and Windows 2000 product.

SNA support is extended on AIX and Sun Solaris platforms.

Platform Support

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows NT are fully supported.
  • Linux support is added to provide further platform choices for MQSeries.
  • On AS/400, a more scalable, single-threaded listener is available, and enhanced security based on the AS/400 security model is added. AS/400 support is also available concurrently with other platforms.

MQSeries Product Extensions: MQSeries V5.2 has been tested with the following Product Extensions:

  • MA0C: Publish/Subscribe1
  • MA0F/G: Application Messaging Interface (AMI)2
  • MC74: Microsoft Cluster Server Support (Windows NT only)
  • MS81: MQSeries Internet pass-thru (Windows NT and Sun Solaris only)
1
Not available for Linux or AS/400.
2
Not available on Linux, AS/400 planned availability December 2000.

Tivoli Ready for the MQSeries: Management of MQSeries using the Tivoli Ready component provides the automatic discovery of queue managers. Knowing what resources are being used in a complex, distributed environment is an important component of managing MQSeries. With the auto-discovery feature, queue managers are detected and their current operational status is reported by instrumentation to the Tivoli Event Console (TEC) Server. It forwards the status to the Tivoli Global Enterprise Manager (GEM) console where they are incorporated into a topology map of the enterprise environment.

The TEC supports the automation of responses to events and alerts such as the restarting of a failed queue manager. In addition, because events from other system resources such as operating systems, databases, and other middleware products are also processed by the TEC, MQSeries events can be correlated with events from its supporting infrastructure and surrounding environment. This provides administrators with the complete view and control of the MQSeries application environments required to maximize its availability. This function is available on the Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX, HP-UX, and Sun Solaris platforms.

An additional Tivoli product, Tivoli Manager for MQSeries, provides enhanced MQSeries management capabilities which include:

  • MQSeries component distribution
  • Additional performance and availability monitoring
  • Topology maps
  • User-friendly command interfaces for MQSeries

ClusterProven: IBM intends to attain ClusterProven validation for the MQSeries for Netfinity® servers running the Windows NT and Windows 2000, V5.2 product on the Windows NT platform in conjunction with the Microsoft Cluster Server Support Product Extension (MC74) available now.

It also intends to attain ClusterProven status for MQSeries for AIX, V5.2 running on RS/6000 by product enhancements in the near future.

Specific platform information: The LotusScript® Extension support in MQSeries for Windows NT, V5.1 is not included in the V5.2 release.

OS/2® support is not upgraded to Version 5.2, but continues to be supported at MQSeries Version 5.1.

For AS/400, Version 5.2 will replace Version 5.1 currently available through the AS/400 ordering system. Service end dates will be those for V5.2. The new capacity unit table will apply to all new MQSeries for AS/400 orders with prices based on capacity units.

MQSeries Java Requirements

The following software is required to run MQSeries base Java:

  • MQSeries for the server platform you wish to use.
  • Java Developers Kit (JDK) for the server platform.
  • Java Developers Kit, or Java Runtime Environment (JRE), or Java-enabled Web browser for client platforms.

Note: To run MQSeries base Java applets (for example, the installation verification program) inside a Web browser, you need a browser that can run Java 1.1.6 applets. Sun System HotJava™, Netscape Navigator 4, and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 are examples of browsers that meet this requirement.

  • VisiBroker for Java V3.2. (Only if running on Windows with a VisiBroker connection.)
  • For OS/400, the AS/400 Developer Kit for Java (5769-JV10), and the Qshell Interpreter, OS/400 (5769-SS1) Option 30. MQSeries base Java must be installed on your machine before you install and run MQSeries JMS.

The following additional software is required if you want to use the Administration Tool:

  • At least one of the following service provider packages:
    • Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) — ldap.jar, providerutil.jar.
    • File system — fscontext.jar, providerutil.jar.
  • A JNDI service provider. This is the resource in which physical representations of the administered objects is stored. It is expected that users of MQSeries JMS will use an LDAP server for this purpose, but the tools also supports the use of the file system context service provider. If an LDAP server is used, it must be configured to store JMS objects.

For further information refer to the documentation available on the Web at:

HP-UX Java bindings support is only available for HP-UXv11 systems running the POSIX draft10 pthreaded version of MQSeries. You also require the HP-UX Developer's Kit for Java 1.1.7 (JDK), Release  C.01.17.01, or above.

Planning Information

The price model for MQSeries base products is structured over multiple tiers, which are defined by the number of processors or processor group on which the MQSeries product will be installed for use. It uses a single charge unit, the Capacity Unit, as the means of charging. This unit has no direct relationship to machine capability; it is a charging authorization term only. Additional Capacity Units are required as you move to larger systems or add new systems.

The MQSeries Distributed Platform Processor Group List announced for MQSeries V5.1 has been changed for MQSeries V5.2 with this announcement.

Upgrades from MQSeries V5.1 licenses where the processor group is not increasing do not require any additional capacity units, even if the number of capacity units for the current processor group increased between MQSeries V5.1 and MQSeries V5.2. This is also true for AS/400 Software Subscription customers with licenses for MQSeries for AS/400 Version 4 products 5769-MQ1 and 5769-MQ2.

For upgrades from MQSeries V5.1 to MQSeries V5.2 with a concurrent increase in processor group, the "credit" amount of capacity units is based on the MQSeries V5.1 Processor Group List, and additional capacity units must be acquired (if necessary) to satisfy the requirements of the MQSeries V5.2 Processor Group List. This is also true for AS/400 Software Subscription customers with licenses for MQSeries for AS/400 Version 4 products 5769-MQ1 and 5769-MQ2.

AS/400 and iSeries customers upgrading from MQSeries for AS/400 Version 2 or Version 3 products should use the upgrade feature codes in MQSeries for AS/400 V5.1 Software Announcement 200-172, dated June 12, 2000, to order upgrades through AS/400 or iSeries channels. The updated MQSeries V5.2 Processor Group list should be used to determine the number of capacity units required.

Transferability: MQSeries generic Capacity Units are transferable across MQSeries platforms that appear in the same MQSeries Transfer Group. The MQSeries Transfer Group will generally, but not exclusively, define MQSeries products at a consistent version and release level. In general, a chargeable upgrade path will be provided to enable existing use authorization (Capacity Units) to be migrated to an MQSeries product at a functionally enhanced version or release level. The following table shows the current MQSeries Transfer Groups and the platforms, within each group, eligible for generic Capacity Unit transferability. The Version.Release levels shown refer to MQSeries products.

Capacity Units are transferable within an individual MQSeries Transfer Group A, B, or C but cannot be transferred between the three groups. MQSeries generic Capacity Units are not transferable to other MQSeries family products covered by MQSeries Integrator Capacity Units and MQSeries Workflow Capacity Units.

Customer Responsibilities: The customer must provide the minimum hardware and software environments in which the licensed programs run.

The customer must identify the machines on which they will install MQSeries. The customer or Program Provider will identify the tier in which they fit, and then calculate the level of Capacity-Unit Charge for the required Use Authorization.

Problem determination (PD) is a customer responsibility. PD is an assessment of whether a problem is caused by hardware or software. PD is complete only when the cause of the problem is identified. This assessment includes examination of available symptoms using the PD procedures documented in the product.

Problem source identification (PSI) is a customer responsibility. PSI begins when software is determined to be the source of the problem. PSI includes tracing the source of the program to a host system control program (SCP), an application program, or another source. Assisting the customer with PSI is an IBM service and support responsibility.

Packaging: Media is on CD-ROM only. It contains program code, PDF files of the publications for viewing online, and HTML files for selected publications on certain platforms.

The package contains:

  • CD-ROM with program and PDF files
  • Java CD-ROM
  • Additional CD-ROM (AS/400, HP-UX only)

Security, Auditability, and Control

The announced program uses the security and auditability features of the workstation operating system.

In addition, MQSeries implements a level of security including access control of queues and authorization identification between message queue managers.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Ordering Information

MQSeries products use a flexible pricing structure. The pricing structure simplifies the development and management of complex applications, particularly for large organizations.

There is only one charge unit for these products, the Capacity-Unit.

The price model is structured over tiers that are defined by machine type and numbers of processors. The greater the number of processors per machine, the higher the tier position and the more use authorizations needed to use the program. This applies to each machine and machine upgrade. A 2-pack Capacity-Unit Use Authorization is included with the program package (minimum entitlement for PC type product). Acquire further capacity units separately.

SPO Dual Pipe Delivery for MQSeries for AIX

MQSeries for AIX is available as dual pipe SPO fulfilment/delivery. Availability of SPO at new MQSeries, Version 5.2 will match the first SPO delivery following the December 15, 2000, planned availability date.

Customization Options: Select the appropriate feature numbers to customize your order with delivery options desired. These features can be specified on the initial or MES orders.

Example: If publications are not desired for the initial order, specify feature number 3470 to ship media only. For future updates, specify feature number 3480 to ship media updates only. If, in the future, publication updates are required, order an MES to remove feature number 3480; then, the publications will ship with the next release of the program.

System Program Order (SPO) (5692-AIX): A 5692-AIX SPO is mandatory for shipments of program distribution and publications. The individual licensed program orders (for example, 5765-B73) are for registration and billing purposes only. No shipment occurs under these orders.

To receive shipment of machine-readable materials stacked on a single CD-ROM requires an SPO (5692-AIX). Billing for the media type selected is generated under the SPO. To prevent additional billing expenses, place only one SPO order per machine.

Select one of the following (5692-AIX) feature numbers for the licensed program hardcopy entitled publications, along with feature number 9001 for asset registration to be shipped on a given date.

These features are unchanged from the previous release.
