Companies need to implement e-business integration rapidly. MQSeries® messaging is a simple way to couple systems and applications together. This allows Internet users, and other applications, controlled access to existing data, such as account transactions.
Business integration across many applications is a common element of successful implementation. Other MQSeries family members, such as MQSeries Integrator and MQSeries Workflow, give you the tools to add value outside the basic message queuing paradigm.
MQSeries, Version 5.2 brings new enhanced performance levels and extends the set of supported platforms. Now MQSeries supports many offerings of Linux, including Caldera OpenLinux, Red Hat, SuSE, and TurboLinux, as well as support for Microsoft Windows 2000.
Operation is also added on a new release of Sun Solaris and for existing releases of AIX®, HP-UX, AS/400®, and Windows NT.
Applications can operate as publish/subscribe brokers on all these platforms (except AS/400 and Linux), using a product extension (available from the MQSeries Web pages), and as publishers or subscribers on any of the platforms.
A new Linux client and a Java client for S/390® are introduced as product extensions, with availability in the same timeframe. MQSeries classes for Java Message Service (JMS) are packaged with the products.
Messaging performance is enhanced, with improvements in throughput of up to 10 times in some scenarios. Other important new features, such as enhanced Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) support, are added to the products.
A new Capacity Unit table applies to all MQSeries Version 5.2 platforms and also to all new orders for other base MQSeries products priced by Capacity Units. (Refer to the Planning Information section.)
Planned Availability Date
December 15, 2000
MQSeries for AIX is available as dual pipe SPO fulfilment/delivery.
Availability of SPO at new MQSeries Version 5.2 will match the first SPO delivery following the December 15, 2000, availability date.
For MQSeries for AS/400, this new version will replace Version 5.1 currently available through the AS/400 ordering system within one month of the GA date. Service to Version 4.2.1 will also be extended.
A new capacity unit table applies to all MQSeries Version 5.2 platforms. (Refer to the Planning Information section.)
e-business is accelerating the pace of change. Speed to market and quality of service are critical for success so companies need to be agile to survive. The MQSeries family provides a versatile platform for e-business.
MQSeries, Version 5.2
MQSeries, Version 5.2 brings new performance levels, extended platform support, and important new features to the successful MQSeries messaging family. MQSeries now supports many offerings of Linux with the V2.2 Kernel as well as offering full support for Microsoft Windows 2000.
Dynamic Workload distribution now has full DHCP Support, which also enables simpler configuration on DHCP machines.
Microsoft Transaction Server support is now integrated into the MQSeries for Windows NT and Windows 2000 product.
SNA support is extended on AIX and Sun Solaris platforms.
Tivoli Ready for the MQSeries: Management of MQSeries using the Tivoli Ready component provides the automatic discovery of queue managers. Knowing what resources are being used in a complex, distributed environment is an important component of managing MQSeries. With the auto-discovery feature, queue managers are detected and their current operational status is reported by instrumentation to the Tivoli Event Console (TEC) Server. It forwards the status to the Tivoli Global Enterprise Manager (GEM) console where they are incorporated into a topology map of the enterprise environment.
The TEC supports the automation of responses to events and alerts such as the restarting of a failed queue manager. In addition, because events from other system resources such as operating systems, databases, and other middleware products are also processed by the TEC, MQSeries events can be correlated with events from its supporting infrastructure and surrounding environment. This provides administrators with the complete view and control of the MQSeries application environments required to maximize its availability. This function is available on the Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX, HP-UX, and Sun Solaris platforms.
An additional Tivoli product, Tivoli Manager for MQSeries, provides enhanced MQSeries management capabilities which include:
ClusterProven: IBM intends to attain ClusterProven validation for the MQSeries for Netfinity® servers running the Windows NT and Windows 2000, V5.2 product on the Windows NT platform in conjunction with the Microsoft Cluster Server Support Product Extension (MC74) available now.
It also intends to attain ClusterProven status for MQSeries for AIX, V5.2 running on RS/6000 by product enhancements in the near future.
OS/2® support is not upgraded to Version 5.2, but continues to be supported at MQSeries Version 5.1.
For AS/400, Version 5.2 will replace Version 5.1 currently available through the AS/400 ordering system. Service end dates will be those for V5.2. The new capacity unit table will apply to all new MQSeries for AS/400 orders with prices based on capacity units.
Program Service is extended for MQSeries for AS/400 V4.2.1 for both the shrinkwrap and AS/400-ordered products as follows:

Performance of the system is dependent on the speed and latency of
transmission links, the speed of processors and storage media used in
devices and servers, and the total demand on server resources.
The price model for MQSeries base products is structured over multiple tiers, which are defined by the number of processors or processor group on which the MQSeries product will be installed for use. It uses a single charge unit, the Capacity Unit, as the means of charging. This unit has no direct relationship to machine capability; it is a charging authorization term only. Additional Capacity Units are required as you move to larger systems or add new systems.
.------------------------------------------+--------------. | | MQSeries | |Description |Capacity Units| |------------------------------------------+--------------| |Intel (4) Uniprocessor machines | 2 | |AS/400 Processor Group P05 | | |------------------------------------------+--------------| |Intel 2-way SMP machines | 4 | |+ RISC 1-2 processors per box/SP node | | |AS/400 Processor Groups P10 and P20 | | |------------------------------------------+--------------| |Intel/RISC 3-8 processors per box/SP node | 8 | |AS/400 Processor Groups P30 and P40 | | |------------------------------------------+--------------| |Intel/RISC 9-23 processors per box/SP node| 16 | |AS/400 Processor Group P50 | | |------------------------------------------+--------------| |Intel/RISC 24 or more processors | | | per box/SP node | 30 | '------------------------------------------+--------------'
The MQSeries Distributed Platform Processor Group List announced for MQSeries V5.1 has been changed for MQSeries V5.2 with this announcement.
Upgrades from MQSeries V5.1 licenses where the processor group is not increasing do not require any additional capacity units, even if the number of capacity units for the current processor group increased between MQSeries V5.1 and MQSeries V5.2. This is also true for AS/400 Software Subscription customers with licenses for MQSeries for AS/400 Version 4 products 5769-MQ1 and 5769-MQ2.
For upgrades from MQSeries V5.1 to MQSeries V5.2 with a concurrent increase in processor group, the "credit" amount of capacity units is based on the MQSeries V5.1 Processor Group List, and additional capacity units must be acquired (if necessary) to satisfy the requirements of the MQSeries V5.2 Processor Group List. This is also true for AS/400 Software Subscription customers with licenses for MQSeries for AS/400 Version 4 products 5769-MQ1 and 5769-MQ2.
AS/400 and iSeries customers upgrading from MQSeries for AS/400 Version 2 or Version 3 products should use the upgrade feature codes in MQSeries for AS/400 V5.1 Software Announcement 200-172, dated June 12, 2000, to order upgrades through AS/400 or iSeries channels. The updated MQSeries V5.2 Processor Group list should be used to determine the number of capacity units required.

For the Capacity Unit information, refer to MQSeries publication (GC34-5265-07) or the MQSeries calculator at:
Transferability: MQSeries generic Capacity Units are transferable across MQSeries platforms that appear in the same MQSeries Transfer Group. The MQSeries Transfer Group will generally, but not exclusively, define MQSeries products at a consistent version and release level. In general, a chargeable upgrade path will be provided to enable existing use authorization (Capacity Units) to be migrated to an MQSeries product at a functionally enhanced version or release level. The following table shows the current MQSeries Transfer Groups and the platforms, within each group, eligible for generic Capacity Unit transferability. The Version.Release levels shown refer to MQSeries products.
.--------------------+------------------+-----------------. |MQSeries Transfer |MQSeries Transfer |MQSeries Transfer| | Group A | Group B | Group C | |--------------------+------------------+-----------------| |AIX, V5.0 |AIX, V5.1 |AIX, V5.2 | |--------------------+------------------+-----------------| |AS/400, V4.2.1 |AS/400, V5.1 |AS/400, V5.2 | |--------------------+------------------+-----------------| |HP-UX, V5.0 |HP-UX, V5.1 |HP-UX, V5.2 | |--------------------+------------------+-----------------| |OS/2 Warp, V5.0 |OS/2 Warp, V5.1 |Linux, V5.2 | |--------------------+------------------+-----------------| |Sun Solaris, V5.0 |Sun Solaris, V5.1 |Sun Solaris, V5.2| |Sun Solaris 5.0 |Sun Solaris, Intel| | | on Intel, V5.0 | Edition, V5.1 | | |--------------------+------------------+-----------------| |Windows NT, V5.0 |Windows NT, V5.1 |Windows NT/2000, | | | | V5.2 | |--------------------+------------------+-----------------| |AT&T NCR, V2.2 |Compaq Tru64 UNIX,| | | | V5.1 | | |--------------------+------------------+-----------------| |Compaq OpenVMS |QSeries Everyplace| | | Alpha V2.2 | V1.0 or V1.1 | | |--------------------+------------------+-----------------| |Compaq OpenVMS VAX, | | | | V2.2 | | | |--------------------+------------------+-----------------| |SINIX and DC/OSx, | | | | V2.2 | | | |--------------------+------------------+-----------------| |Tandem NSK, V188.8.131.52| | | '--------------------+------------------+-----------------'
Capacity Units are transferable within an individual MQSeries Transfer Group A, B, or C but cannot be transferred between the three groups. MQSeries generic Capacity Units are not transferable to other MQSeries family products covered by MQSeries Integrator Capacity Units and MQSeries Workflow Capacity Units.
The customer must identify the machines on which they will install MQSeries. The customer or Program Provider will identify the tier in which they fit, and then calculate the level of Capacity-Unit Charge for the required Use Authorization.
Problem determination (PD) is a customer responsibility. PD is an assessment of whether a problem is caused by hardware or software. PD is complete only when the cause of the problem is identified. This assessment includes examination of available symptoms using the PD procedures documented in the product.
Problem source identification (PSI) is a customer responsibility. PSI begins when software is determined to be the source of the problem. PSI includes tracing the source of the program to a host system control program (SCP), an application program, or another source. Assisting the customer with PSI is an IBM service and support responsibility.
The package contains:
This program when downloaded from a Web site, contains the applicable IBM
license agreement, and License Information (LI). The license and LI will
be stored in a directory such as LICENSE.TXT for future reference.
Security, Auditability, and Control
The announced program uses the security and auditability features of the workstation operating system.
In addition, MQSeries implements a level of security including access control of queues and authorization identification between message queue managers.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
MQSeries products use a flexible pricing structure. The pricing structure simplifies the development and management of complex applications, particularly for large organizations.
There is only one charge unit for these products, the Capacity-Unit.
The price model is structured over tiers that are defined by machine type and numbers of processors. The greater the number of processors per machine, the higher the tier position and the more use authorizations needed to use the program. This applies to each machine and machine upgrade. A 2-pack Capacity-Unit Use Authorization is included with the program package (minimum entitlement for PC type product). Acquire further capacity units separately.
