Overview

Version 3.7 of Tivoli Enterprise Console® is a powerful event management and automation application for large, heterogeneous IT enterprises that need event management to analyze and respond to event conditions. This new version has been designed to facilitate extensive flexibility and scalability, both from an operations viewpoint and from a business policy and process position. This tool is designed to help large enterprise IT teams enable the event management process in support of their internal and/or external customers.

Key Features

As the hub of Tivoli's availability solutions, Tivoli Enterprise Console processes and correlates common management events from any different application, system and network resource, determines the real problem, and can automatically initiate corrective actions. Robust logic facilities for root-cause analysis, along with flexible grouping and filtering capabilities can significantly reduce the number of events displayed, allowing the operations staff to zero in on the most critical and relevant events, simplifying the management of even the most complex environments.

The following capabilities are provided in a unique, single, easy-to-use solution:

  • Event integration, which collects all needed information, standardizes the event format, and processes or displays the events according to established management policies
  • Cross-domain event correlation, which helps the IT staff determine the actual cause of problems so that they may concentrate on real solutions
  • Event automation, which automates almost any corrective or preventive action in the enterprise
  • Distributed intelligence capabilities, which makes Tivoli® Enterprise Console correlation capabilities available anywhere in the event stream rather than limited to one central Tivoli Enterprise Console server

Additional features include: GUI rule builder, notification and escalation, customizable event groups, and centralized, policy-based adapter configuration.

What's New

Description

New Easy-to-Use Operations Console in Java

  • Drag and drop, and resize columns on the fly.
  • "One-click" column sorting, ordering, and sequencing.
  • All user preferences maintained between instances.
  • All user preferences stored centrally so that users can log on to different machines and still get "their" console.
  • New capabilities allow more flexible uses of screen real estate to manage events.
  • New initial Tivoli Enterprise Console view offers quick insight into the health (event activity) of all groups using stacked bar charts. Double-click on a bar to enter that group.
  • The console is a stand-alone Java application for flexibility in implementation (does not require framework/desktop).
  • Tivoli secure log-in for security.
  • Each console "pulls" events (only the events and slots needed) directly from the database for high performance and scalability.
  • Console refresh rate is individually configurable to allow different users to be given different priorities for event updates.
  • Launch local action/command allows third-party, or custom scripts, or applications to be launched easily from the Tivoli Enterprise console in event context.
  • Launch Tivoli tasks, in event context, allows any Tivoli task to be selected and run.
  • Launch Web page, in event context, to view more information on the event to help operators understand (from the customer's own information) what needs to be done, who to contact, and so on (samples and hooks provided).
  • Multiple event details, viewed in a single panel with additional contextual information, help the lesser skilled operator understand.
  • Flicker-free interface makes Close/ACK errors less common.
  • Upon launch of the console, events are populated and displayed immediately so that operators can be working in a matter of minutes, even with a large number of events.
  • All slots are displayable, even custom slots.
  • All slots may be filtered on (including custom) for event groups using any SQL operator (via the GUI, or writing straight SQL in the field).
  • All filtering code may be integrity checked, helping to eliminate errors in setting up filters for groups.
  • Consoles are defined separately from operators so that multiple operators may be assigned to console definitions.
  • When changing console definitions, all operators assigned to that console automatically pick up the changes, thus eliminating the need for scripts to be used to update or create consoles en masse.
  • Conflicts between consoles are resolved automatically and the operators are notified if necessary.
  • Migration assistant exports the definition of consoles and groups from the current Dialog Specification Language (DSL) console implementation and allows importing into the new, Java-based console so that current configurations are maintained.
  • Import/Export feature allows the console and group definitions to be exported to a file for archiving, or for easily migrating from the development environment into production.
  • V3.7 is installed via Tivoli Product Install method or JavaShield installation.

Adapters/Adapter Configuration Facility/Event Integration Facility

  • The Windows NT™ adapter has been enhanced to support Windows™ 2000 and the new logfiles that are available.
  • The Windows NT adapter automatically understands the environment in which it is running (Windows NT or 2000) and monitors the appropriate (desired) logfiles.
  • The adapter configuration facility supports the pre-filter statements in the GUI.
  • Full support of dual-byte characters in the event stream is provided so that they will display properly in the console.
  • Tivoli Enterprise Console gateways can perform conversion of Event Integration Facility (EIF) mode so that events received from Tivoli Management Environment™ (TME) (or "secure") endpoint adapters may be sent onward in non-TME (or non-secure) mode to the Tivoli Enterprise Console Availability Intermediate Manager or the Tivoli Enterprise Console.
  • The adapter for HP OpenView (HPOV) network management system has been updated to support the V6.01 of HPOV so that the newly available APIs can be leveraged.

Tivoli Enterprise Console Availability Intermediate Manager

  • May be implemented virtually anywhere, as many as required, offering tremendous flexibility and scalability.
  • Mid-level management for Tivoli Enterprise Console events to better control the environment and event management process.
  • Multi-tiered (n-tiered) capabilities allow enormous flexibility and scalability for the event stream, resulting in better bandwidth utilization, more control over event flow, event storm protection, aggregation capabilities, redundancy, and so on.
  • Hundreds of events per second throughput, depending upon rules/filters employed, for high-capacity event throttling and correlation.
  • Multi-threaded filter engine for simple filtering.
  • Easy-to-use interface for developing simple filters, thresholding, duplicate detection, and so on.
  • Scheduling capabilities within the GUI to change the behavior of the filters engaged at different times of the day, week, month, and so on.
  • Immediate visibility of all Availability Intermediate Managers in the environment from the management console and drill-down capability into each to understand the status of the engine, the filters and rulebases deployed, and so on.
  • "Drag-n-drop" deployment of intelligence individually or to groups of Availability Intermediate Managers.
  • Centralized control of the distributed intelligence environment.
  • No database is required so that administration overhead is minimal.
  • Take localized action in response to events, gather responses to the attempted actions, and aggregate all the information to be logged or sent upwards to the Tivoli Enterprise Console.
  • Run local command or Tivoli task automatically in response to an event condition without stopping event processing.
  • Asynchronous local task/program execution and results are linked to the originating events.
  • Events contain a new attribute, called server path, that lists every Availability Intermediate Manager rule engine the event has passed through on its path upwards to the Tivoli Enterprise Console to aid in tracing any event.

Default Rules, Predicates and Rules Engine, and Rule Compiler (The Rules Engine is implemented in both Tivoli Enterprise Console and Availability Intermediate Manager):

  • Dual-byte character support in the rules engine.
  • Maintenance rules and predicates allow events to be ignored during certain times while resources are in maintenance and automatically be brought back into production either through timer expiration or by another event.
  • Built-in maintenance security does not allow bogus maintenance events to be accepted, protecting your servers from malicious intent.
  • Heartbeat rules and predicates with priority and criticality levels are built in so that proper significance can be easily applied when heartbeats are missed. (This works in concert with the maintenance rules if engaged.)
  • Engine state is maintained between instances (global variables, timers, facts, and so on).
  • Over one hundred predicates documented and supported.
  • Information provided on how best to write Tivoli Enterprise Console rules and leverage the underlying logic engine.
  • Many new predicates specifically designed to solve common business problems.
  • Predicates very easily allow you to establish relationships between multiple events which: signal an event condition, the actions to run in response, the events which clear the event condition, and the effects of the event condition.
  • Predicates allow insight into event activity so that you may report on the traffic through the rule engine, better understand the bottlenecks in the rule base, or to actually change the behavior of the event flow based upon event activity.
  • Multiple rule engines may be engaged to perform specific management needs, such as specific logical event processing or to deal with flood conditions (for example, using straight Internet Protocol (IP) socket connections to route the events).
  • Supports and leverages the non-TME (non-secure) version of EIF for sending events so that caching of events and alternate destinations are automatically supported.
  • Dynamic rule tracing.
  • Extremely granular rule debugging, tracing and profiling capabilities (individual rule, ruleset, or rulebase) support enables more effective and efficient rule programming.
  • Automatic Syntax checking prevents you from making a mistake with classes.
  • Export and view the class-tree hierarchy available for visual representation.
  • More efficient code is generated from the compiler.
  • Existing cache-search predicates revamped to provide much more efficient cache searching, thereby increasing the performance.
  • Asynchronous local task/program execution and results are linked to the originating event.
  • "TEC_Start" event given priority processing prior to previously cached events so that rules that are designed to fire on TEC_start will not have to wait until the cache is flushed through the engine.
  • Event thresholding predicates included to easily codify what represents event storm conditions.
  • Support is provided for user-defined predicates.

Included Best Practices

  • Leveraging the wealth of information and real-life experience from highly skilled practitioners in the IBM Global Services organization and the Advanced Technical Services Organization (ATSO), we are including knowledge sets for several types of event sources: Cisco, American Power Conversion, Compaq Insight Manager, Windows NT, and so on.
  • Included in the knowledge sets are sample rules, full documentation of the events, and logic-flow diagrams representing the logic contained in the rulesets.

Event Management Guide Version 1.1

  • Gathers insight into event information, trends, capacity, and staffing, using our unique Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) tool called Tivoli Decision Support (TDS) for multi-dimensional analysis.
  • Reports on events, slice and dice the data, drill-down, and so on.

Product Positioning

Tivoli Enterprise Console remains the focal point for event management in large, heterogeneous environments. Tivoli Enterprise Console is designed to help the operations person understand what is broken and what needs to be fixed first. Acting as a "Manager of Managers", Tivoli Enterprise Console integrates management events from many diverse event sources, analyzes them in relation to other events or conditions, without regard to time of arrival, and understands the "real" problems in the environment. In addition, the effects of the problems are understood and escalation policies may be applied to ensure the proper action is taken either automatically or via other notification vehicles. No other event management system has these capabilities for high-speed, logic-based reasoning, within a framework of enabling services, as well as the ability to centrally control and manage the intelligence via "drag and drop" interfaces.

Tivoli Enterprise Console is one of the critical Tivoli applications that brings diverse management domains under central control, allowing Tivoli to deliver on its vision. Virtually all Tivoli products send events into the Tivoli Enterprise Console event stream and leverage the intelligence of Tivoli Enterprise Console with business rules specific to their needs. Tivoli Enterprise Console is also uniquely positioned to help enforce business policy with regard to the event management process. With the new Availability Intermediate Manager, you are now able to easily process limitless volumes of events, reroute events based on any criteria, duplicate event paths, and so on, based upon whatever policy has been established by your organization. Event Management is the key process which enables all other IT processes (such as Problem Management, Change Management). Tivoli Enterprise Console V3.7 is uniquely suited to help your IT organizations deliver flexible, scalable event-management policies and processes.

Support Upgrade

During the first year of a license, the customer may upgrade to the Tivoli Standard-24 or Tivoli Select Support option by ordering the applicable OTC feature number from the table below. The OTC feature numbers may be specified on the initial order or later via an MES during the first year only. Ordering this OTC feature will not result in an extension of the no-charge support period.

In subsequent years, if a customer wants to upgrade to the Tivoli Standard-24 or Tivoli Select Support option, an MES order must be entered to discontinue the existing support option feature number and to add the feature number for the desired options. After an MES order is entered, the support will be renewed and billed annually at that support level unless support is cancelled by the customer.
