Overview

Normal backup and recovery operations are handled by the image copy and recovery tools you choose. However, many customers have additional backup and recovery needs that require special solutions. These additional needs may include:

  • Archiving data
  • Point in time recovery
  • Online recovery
  • Added image copy capabilities
  • Replication of data among sites to where it is needed can enable your distributed applications

To help you with these special requirements, IBM introduces the following seven new and/or repositioned products:

  • IBM DB2® Recovery Manager — simplifies and coordinates the recovery of both DB2 and IMS™ data to a common point.
  • IBM DB2 Row Archive Manager — provides a simple method to control the separation of aged data from your active DB2 data.
  • IBM DB2 DataPropagator™ — provides a key replication solution for data warehousing and other distributed database environments.
  • IBM IMS DEDB Fast Recovery — provides a fast alternative to emergency restart (ERE) failure recovery.
  • IBM IMS Recovery Saver — improves IMS data availability by eliminating the need to establish IMS recovery points for disaster recovery or potential time stamp recovery purposes.
  • IBM IMS Image Copy Extensions — reduces costs by reducing the number of tape volumes used by the Image Copy Function.
  • IBM IMS Database Integrity Control Facility — provides a complete interface to the IMS Database Recovery Control (DBRC) facility.

Description

Seven Programs Supporting Recovery and Replication

IBM DB2 DataPropagator for OS/390® Version 7 provides a key replication solution for data warehousing and other distributed database environments. Use it for highly efficient maintenance of consistent copies of relational data in the DB2 family of databases, automatically capturing and applying data changes. It can help you leverage your data assets for decision making by enabling sophisticated data transformation. New with this version is support of unicode and ASCII encoding schemes, which minimizes the need for data conversion in the replication environments.

IBM DB2 Recovery Manager for OS/390 simplifies and coordinates the recovery of both DB2 and IMS data to a common point, cutting the time and cost of data recovery and availability. It eliminates the error-prone complexity of managing different logs, utilities, and processes to do recovery from both databases.

IBM DB2 Row Archive Manager for OS/390 (DB2 RAM) can save storage, improve performance, and reduce the overall costs of your DB2 environment. DB2 RAM provides a simple method to control the separation of aged data from your active DB2 data. You can use DB2 RAM to move seldom used data to a less costly storage medium.

IBM IMS Data Base Integrity Control Facility (DBICF) for OS/390 Version 7 provides a complete interface to the IMS Database Recovery Control (DBRC) facility. The easy-to-use ISPF panels make an expert out of the novice DBRC user. DBICF features include:

  • A complete DBRC interface to all commands and utilities
  • Automated job generation
  • Logging of DBRC activity
  • Access to DB Administration information via DBICF query facilities

DBICF is a powerful tool that not only simplifies dealing with DBRC, but provides many operational benefits.

IBM IMS DEDB Fast Recovery for OS/390 Version 2 assists technical support personnel in the operation and maintenance of data integrity of IMS databases. It is designed as a fast alternative to emergency restart (ERE) failure recovery.

  • Corrects the online log data sets (OLDS) by invalidating the logging for transactions that did not reach the sync point.
  • Recovers the DEDB areas that were active when IMS failed.
  • Provides operation procedures and information to assist the I/S staff in the processes required before and after IMS cold start.

IBM IMS Image Copy Extensions for OS/390 reduces:

  • Operational costs by reducing the number of tape volumes used by the Image Copy Function
  • The manual labor required for tape handling, thus reducing the execution of the HD and DEDB pointer Checker functions for the Image Copy data sets

Major functions are:

  • Obtaining an image copy of the database. The image copy function:
    • Generates the image copies in compressed format, thus reducing the number of tapes needed to record the image copies
    • Checks the database pointers while taking an image copy
    • Supports database group processing
    • Places two or more image copy data sets on the same tape or set of tapes
  • Recovering a database data set
    • The Recovery and Image Copy functions dynamically allocate the input and output data sets such as database data set groups, log data sets, and change accumulation data sets. You do not have to provide a DD statement for each data set!

IBM IMS Recovery Saver for OS/390 Version 2 prepares a set of IMS logs and a copy of the IMS RECON data sets to allow IMS full function databases to be recovered to any time stamp in an IMS data sharing or non-data sharing environment.

The use of IMS Recovery Saver will:

  • Improve IMS data availability by eliminating the need to establish IMS recovery points for disaster recovery or potential time stamp recovery purposes (that is, remove the need to quiesce databases)
  • Provide the ability to recover IMS full function databases to any time without requiring the existence of an IMS recovery point
  • Reduce disaster recovery service restoration times by automatically performing all necessary RECON maintenance operations
  • Allow IMS disaster recovery methodologies where archived IMS log data is manually shipped off-site to continue to work in an IMS data sharing environment
  • Provide the ability to perform coordinated disaster recovery between IMS databases and DB2 objects without requiring that both IMS and DB2 be quiesced
  • Provide the ability to backup RECON data sets that contain records greater than 32,760 bytes in size in a single step
  • Reduce planned outages by providing complete support for RECON data sets with records greater than 32,760 bytes in size

Customization Options: Select the appropriate feature numbers to customize your order with delivery options desired. These features can be specified on the initial or MES orders.

Example: If publications are not desired for the initial order, specify feature number 3470 to ship media only. For future updates, specify feature number 3480 to ship media updates only. If, in the future, publication updates are required, order an MES to remove feature number 3480; then, the publications will ship with the next release of the program.
