Description

TCP/IP Support for DB2 Server for VSE

  • Provides access, over a TCP/IP network, to DB2 Server for VSE servers from DRDA requesters, and to DRDA servers from DB2 Server for VSE requesters.
  • Reduces network management costs because you will now use only one protocol (TCP/IP) instead of two (SNA and TCP/IP).
  • Increases network access to use the Internet when accessing some servers from a requester, thereby enabling a distributed database e-business hub.
  • Improves ease of configuration and maintainability.

e-business Connectors for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5

  • VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 includes connectors that provide access to VSAM and DL/I data and DB2 data using a DRDA connection. These connectors consist of two parts. The first is a set of VSE external services based on DB2 stored procedures. The second is a portfolio of Java-based services based on JDBC/ODBC standards. VSE connectors will provide a basic, record-level API to VSE/VSAM and DL/I.

DRDA RUOW Application Requester Support for VSE (Batch)

  • Provides your VSE batch application programs with the ability to execute SQL statements to access and manipulate data managed by any remote application server that supports IBM's implementation of the DRDA architecture.
  • Improves decision making by having access to all required data rather than just the DB2 Server for VSE information.
  • Helps you place your mission-critical data on the most cost-effective platform.

DRDA Remote Unit of Work (RUOW) application requester gives you read and update capability in one location in a single unit of work.

Stored Procedures Application Requester Support

  • Provides your DB2 Server for VSE & VM application programs with the ability to invoke stored procedures from any remote application server that supports IBM's implementation of the DRDA architecture.

  • Provides your DB2 Server for VSE & VM application programs with the ability to process result sets from any remote application server that supports IBM's implementation of the DRDA architecture and result set processing.

  • Stored procedures allow logic to be encapsulated in a procedure local to the database manager. As a result, the number of SQL statements and replies flowing across the network is reduced and performance is better.

    Productivity is improved by:

    • Simplifying the writing of end-user applications. Applications can call a procedure rather than coding the logic in the application itself.
    • Simplifying the writing of end-user applications that require table data to be returned from a stored procedure (without result set support, something similar must be simulated using SQLDAs).
    • Allowing many applications to call the same procedure, thereby eliminating the need to duplicate code in multiple applications.
    • Reducing network traffic, which results in better performance and higher productivity when writing/debugging applications.
    • Enabling customers to encapsulate business rules into the stored procedures, which can be called to ensure consistent implementation of the business rules.

Integration with DB2 UDB Control Center

  • Improves your administration of DB2 Server for VSE & VM servers with the addition of new objects to DB2 UDB Control Center to manage your servers.

Simplified DB2 Server for VSE Installation/Migration

  • Simplifies the process of installation and migration with reduced user intervention.

A REXX procedure Job Manager is supplied to assist in the DB2 Server for VSE Installation/Migration process. It controls the overall job flow based on the contents of the job list control tables and the parameter table. The job manager selects the job control member from the job list file, extracts the members from the installation library, modifies the jcl, submits the jobs, evaluates the execution, posts the results, and then repeats the process as required.

New Code Page and Euro Symbol Code Page Support

  • Provides support for additional languages (Hindi, EDanish-Norwegian, EFinnish-Swedish, E-Spanish), and UTF-8.
  • Protects your database investment and provides the support you need for addressing your changing business requirements.

Control Center for VSE and VM Optional Feature Enhancements

  • Provides VSE and VM customers with an integrated suite of database administration tools designed to automate the support and maintenance of VSE and VM databases, leaving you free to focus on areas like database design.
  • Provides VM customers with easier tools for using QMF, scheduling execution of QMF PROCS, running Explain against QMF queries, and manipulating QMF objects.
  • Provides VM customers with tools for creating tables, and running Explain against package statements.
  • Provides VM customers with new and improved tape hopper support, and high-density (non-CMS density) tape drive support.
  • Improves the availability of your DB2 Server for VM database by changing automatically the archive FILEDEF (ARIARCH) after each online archive while the database is running.
  • Provides VSE customers with better exploitation of operator commands.

  • QMF for Windows for All Your Reporting Needs

QMF for Windows provides a general-purpose query environment for DB2 datamarts, data warehouses, and enterprise operational data. QMF for Windows is designed for multiuser, production-level data access where the broadest base of business operations must be satisfied.

QMF for Windows allows users to bring the same standards of performance, security, and reliability to Windows and the Web they might have traditionally expected only from entirely host-based technologies.

    QMF for Windows users can:

    • Explore data within the point-and-click QMF for Windows query interface
    • Build robust reports
    • Automate even the most complex tasks with procedures
    • Store automatically the resulting QMF for Windows "objects" in a common object space shared by other QMF and QMF for Windows users across the enterprise

Users can issue queries from their Web browser or quickly convert an unlimited number of their existing QMF reports for publishing to their Web server of choice, and schedule unattended refreshes, rapidly creating "warehouses" of business reports accessible to all through any Web browser.

QMF for Windows API allows users to stay entirely within their favorite Windows applications (such as Lotus® 1-2-3®, Microsoft™ Excel, or Microsoft Access) as they:

    • Execute QMF for Windows objects
    • Query multiple DB2 databases
    • Merge the resulting data into a spreadsheet, database, or other Windows desktop application of choice

  • QMF for Windows Governing and Administration

QMF for Windows also provides advanced administrative controls, accessible only to authorized database administrators, that prevent waste or abuse of database server resources. Administrators have a wealth of options available, from preventing access to a database server altogether, restricting groups of users to a "read only" status (disallowing ad hoc query access), to finely-tuned limits on rows fetched and re-use of connections to the database. Database access techniques such as static SQL, uncommitted read, and DB2 stored procedures are supported to minimize contention for database resources and maximize the value obtained from any given database server. In addition, detailed object use tracking helps locate heavily used (or unused) queries and forms, and identifies every object ever executed by a user, and how often.

  • Centralized Install Options

Administrators can centralize the installation, configuration, and day-to-day client operation of QMF for Windows by opting to contain configuration settings (Server Definition Files (SDFs)), preconfigured client installation packages, or the QMF for Windows product itself on a networked Windows NT server. You can allow each user to run the product from the server, have their own SDF or you can create a single SDF shared by multiple users over a file-sharing network.

The advantage to these approaches is they dramatically reduce installation and configuration of individual client PCs, reduce total cost of ownership, and allow for a "thin client" installation at each Windows workstation wherever desired.

Java-based querying requires no client install at all aside from a current Web browser.

  • Connectivity

QMF for Windows Version 7 implements DRDA and provides native support for TCP/IP connectivity to DB2 UDB Version 5 (or later). For connectivity to SNA environments, it employs the Advanced Program-to-Program Communication (APPC) language and the Common Programming Interface-Communications (CPI-C) interface. By using the CPI-C interface, QMF for Windows operates with the SNA connectivity solution of your choice, such as, eNetwork™ Personal Communications, Microsoft SNA Server, Novell NetWare for SAA, and others.

Improved Packaging with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5

  • VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 delivers DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1 to every VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 user, with a 90-day trial period to evaluate the product.

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. Product Positioning

The DB2 Server for VSE & VM program is the DB2 Family member that provides relational database support for the VSE/ESA and VM/ESA operating system environments. It is the basis for a robust e-business environment, because of its reliability, scalability, manageability, and interoperability with e-business platform applications, through DB2 Connect and WebSphere.

Positioning the QMF family is best summarized by the phrase "Business Intelligence (BI) Starts Here." Easy to use and fast to implement, query and reporting tools remain important to DB2 customers for operational and data warehouse query and reporting. By offering fast query performance, browser-based querying, extensive governing control over user actions, and DB2 resource consumption, QMF and/or QMF for Windows is a natural selection over and above other query and reporting tools.

QMF for Windows can connect to DB2 UDB for OS/390®, Version 5, or later, via native TCP/IP, or to the SNA environments of that or other DB2 versions.

QMF for Windows CLI connectivity allows access to DB2 Personal Edition and requires the DB2 UDB Version 5.2 client. When connecting via CLI, you cannot run a DB2 stored procedure that returns multiple result sets, or bind static SQL.

For SNA connectivity, QMF for Windows requires an SNA/CPI-C product on each Windows client. These products are the interface between QMF for Windows and the APPC verb set used by the SNA environment to manage server/requester relationships.

For TCP/IP connectivity, QMF for Windows must be able to establish a TCP connection from the Windows workstation to the remote host and remote port (the port on which DB2 is listening). This can be established with many 32-bit Winsock products, including those provided with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000. QMF for Windows requires a Winsock 1.1 interface to the installed TCP protocol stack.

Compatibility: DB2 Server for VSE & VM, Version 7.1 is upwardly compatible with DB2 Server for VSE & VM, Version 6.1.

Customization Options: Select the appropriate feature numbers to customize your order to specify the delivery options desired. These features can be specified on the initial or MES orders.

Example: If publications are not desired for the initial order, specify feature number 3470 to ship media only. For future updates, specify feature number 3480 to ship media updates only. If, in the future, publication updates are required, order an MES to remove feature number 3480; then, the publications will ship with the next release of the program.

Ordering a DSLO feature will result in IBM maintaining a record of this customer location as a DSLO user only. All material for the DSLO license will be provided through the basic license location. If a user selects DSLO, no other feature numbers are valid for this order and no program materials or updates will be shipped.

Extended License Charge (ELC) Basic License: To order a basic license, specify the appropriate program and feature number, if required, for asset registration. Specify the applicable ELC features. Also, specify the feature number of the desired distribution medium.

Processors with assigned capacity above 80 MSUs will now have DB2 Server for VSE & VM software prices based on the CPU service unit capacity of the processor. The ELC price structure will have a Base Charge for 80 MSU capacity and an incremental Per MSU charge for all additional MSUs above the 80 MSU base.
