Overview

The Tivoli Storage Management product set, IBM's premier enterprise storage management solution, lets you align storage management policies with business practices, so you can make optimal use of the IT organization for a powerful competitive advantage. Now, the Tivoli family of products offers improvements to Tivoli Storage Manager for OS/390 and MVS users — enhancements that improve the data transfer and protection support for mobile computer users.

Specifically, the enhancements to Tivoli Storage Manager involve the following:

  • Adaptive Differencing Technology changes the way data can be transferred through the enterprise. This technology dynamically transfers changed data at a block, byte, file or volume level based on the data size and network characteristics. This improves data transfer performance considerable, and is transparent to the user.
  • Progressive Backup offers adaptive sub-file-level backup capabilities prior to data transfer over the network. With Progressive Backup, only files that have changed are backed up, eliminating unnecessary data transfers that sap network and CPU power and productivity. This enhancement also improves backup performance when using phone lines.
  • New encryption support for Tivoli Storage Manger Windows clients ensures that the backups sent over public phone lines are secure.

These enhancements add to the existing functionality of Tivoli Storage Manager. Spanning the entire enterprise, Tivoli Storage Manager integrates automated network backup, restore and archive, storage management, and disaster recovery. Tivoli Storage Manager includes the flexibility to support both single server and network environments.

Functions for VM/ESA® remain unchanged; VM/ESA is at Version 3.1.

Refer to Software Announcement 299-126 , dated May 24, 1999, for information on the current level of support for the Tivoli Storage Manager VM Version 3.1 server.

Description

Adaptive Differencing Technology fundamentally changes the way data may be transferred throughout the enterprise. Adaptive Differencing Technology transfers data by byte, block, or file level based on data size. This technology supports a variety of connectivity strategies, including LANs, WANs, SANs, Internet and dial-up connections. The first application is designed for mobile computer users and other users with a need to minimize the amount of data transmitted over a network.

Mobile user data protection is enhanced with support for adaptive sub-file-level backup and encryption of data before it is transmitted over the network. With Progressive Backup, only files that have changed are candidates to be backed up, therefore eliminating unnecessary data transfers that rob your network and CPUs of vital power and productivity. With Adaptive Differencing, the backup-archive client dynamically determines the most efficient approach for creating backup copies changed bytes, changed blocks or changed files, delivering improved backup performance over dial connections. With encryption, the backups being sent over the public phone lines are secure, as are the files being stored on your Tivoli Storage Manager server. Adaptive Differencing and Encryption Technology is supported on Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive clients for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT™, and Windows 2000.

A file backed up using Adaptive Differencing initially sends a reference file to the Tivoli Storage Manager. Subsequent backups for that file send a delta file, which consist of the changed data from the reference copy.

A restore operation reconstructs the file on the Tivoli Storage Manager client using the reference file and the delta file that represents the point in time for the restore request.

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities: For the OS/390 and MVS servers, the Tivoli Storage Manager database is not automatically upgraded during the installation of the Tivoli Storage Manager OS/390 and MVS 4.1 servers. The Tivoli Storage Manager administrator must explicitly initiate the database upgrade using the UPGRADEDB command parameter. After this database upgrade, the user can no longer run a previous version of the server with the database.

As a normal precaution, it is recommended that a full database backup be performed before installing the Version 4.1 code, as well as after completing the installation. Refer to the README files for more detailed information.

As part of a migration plan from Tivoli Storage Manager V3.7 to Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1, Tivoli Storage Manager clients and servers may be upgraded at different times. To ensure that you can continue your backup and archive activities during the migration, Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 allows the following:

  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V3.7 client can perform backup, restore, archive, and retrieve functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 server.
  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 client can perform backup, restore, archive, and retrieve functions to an Tivoli Storage Manager V3.7 server.
  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V3.7 HSM client can perform migrate and recall functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 server.
  • Data that has been backed up from a Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 client to any Tivoli Storage Manager server cannot be restored to a Tivoli Storage Manager V3.7.
  • All command line administrative clients can administer Tivoli Storage Manager V3.7 servers and Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 servers.
