Description

WebSphere Edge Server (Edge Server) brings together:

  • Innovative caching
  • Local and wide-area load balancing
  • Application-aware Quality of Service (QoS) routing capabilities.

The integration of these rich functions and their wide array of features reduces cost for the Web site owner while providing improved customer satisfaction. Best of all, Edge Server takes advantage of existing supported hardware and Web server software.

WebSphere Edge Server provides a single, integrated, drop-in solution that addresses these interrelated functions, with a particular emphasis on providing synergy with WebSphere application environments. It may be deployed at the central Web server site to scale both intranet as well as Internet applications, and at remote branches within the enterprise for the purpose of accelerating application performance to end users at that location.

The two major components of WebSphere Edge Server are:

  • Caching Proxy
  • Network Dispatcher

Caching Proxy

The Edge Server includes a robust caching proxy component, that significantly improves the scalability and performance of Web-based HTTP and FTP server clusters. In addition to included support for Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS) filtering, the caching proxy also incorporates an API that provides for the ability to implement value-add application plug-ins (such as filtering/blocking of inappropriate content, or detection/blocking of viruses within requested objects).

The caching proxy, when configured with the Network Dispatcher component in content-based routing (CBR) mode, provides differentiated QoS for incoming requests based on user identity or the specific service requested. Differentiation based on user identity provides classification. For example, a requestor classified as a "frequent buyer" would be routed to a higher capacity server or be given access to additional content than an unknown customer. The information used to identify the user comes from cookies or header information in the HTTP request.

Differentiated service based on the service requested provides a way for the Web site owner to provide preferential service to some requests over others. A site owner can give preferential treatment to a "proceed to checkout" request versus a "search for" request. As with user identity, the rules used are defined by the site owner.

Network Dispatcher

The Edge Server includes a dynamic, load balancing component, which improves the scalability and availability of Web, FTP, or other TCP-based server clusters. Incoming user requests are directed to the best server as determined by the health and performance of the servers and the applications running on them. If a server or application problem is detected, user requests are dispatched to alternate servers. The load balancing component can also be used to distribute load across multiple geographic sites.

Edge Server includes enhanced versions of the proxy caching and load balancing components included in WebSphere Performance Pack V3.0. For more detailed information about previously announced features and functions of these components, refer to:

  • Software Announcement 298-168 , dated May 26, 1998
  • Software Announcement 299-070 , dated March 16, 1999
  • Software Announcement 299-251 , dated September 7, 1999

Enhancements

The new Express install process has been implemented to simplify the installation of WebSphere Edge Server components. When using InstallShield Java™ Edition 3.0, it performs a product-wide install and allows the user to create a working configuration during the install process by answering a few simple questions about the configuration. On-going configuration and management operations continue to be performed using the individual GUI-based tools for the individual components.

Improvements to the components include:

Caching Proxy

  • Performance improvements:
    • URL cache redesign — The cache has been redesigned to use a raw object store instead of a file system-based approach, resulting in significantly improved cache performance and reduced proxy restart times. Internal testing indicates that performance has been increased by a factor of two over that of the caching proxy of WebSphere Performance Pack V3.0 in some circumstances. Additionally, the previous limitation that the caching proxy could not exploit more than two processors has been removed.
    • Dynamic thread connection association — To enable optimum use of system resources, the association of a worker thread to a TCP connection is no longer static. Instead a pool of threads is maintained and a thread is dynamically assigned to a connection on demand. This allows reassignment of threads when a connection is idle.
    • Remote cache access (RCA) — For improved performance, the RCA capability is no longer dependent on the use of a distributed file system. Cache array routing protocol (CARP) continues to be used to find the owning proxy.
  • Combined format logging — The log formats have been modified to allow compatibility with WebSphere Site Analyzer. This feature is supported when the caching proxy is operated in reverse proxy mode.
  • SSL enhancements — SSL support has been enhanced to allow encrypted communication between the reverse proxy and origin servers. The proxy now uses the enhanced GSKit 4 SSL implementation that has improved reliability. SSL connections are now supported end to end.
  • Capacity planning — Planning information has been added to the documentation to assist in designing solutions for anticipated traffic loading based on platform operating system and processor capabilities.
  • Streaming media support:
    • Receive and interpret real-time streaming protocol (RTSP) requests, and redirect those requests from client players to either the origin server or to one of a bank of RealProxy servers which will be separately licensed, and bought by the customer from RealNetworks.
    • Real-time streaming media splitting.
  • Usability improvements

Various usability improvements have been incorporated based on feedback from user-based recommendations.

Network Dispatcher

  • Mutual high-availability backup

Prior support for high availability defined a pair of machines with different roles:

    • A primary machine that is in active mode and forwards packets
    • A backup machine that is normally in standby mode and does not forward packets

The new mutual high-availability function permits both machines to forward packets, each acting as a stand by for the other. This increases the overall throughput of the solution and increases the utilization of the customers investment.

  • Type of Service (ToS) rules — This powerful QoS function allows Network Dispatcher customers to dictate what server or group of servers to be sent the traffic based on type of service bits that are set in the IP packet by the application. A new packet level rule provides a simple link between particular ToS bits in the IP packet to a given server set.

  • Lotus Domino Server scalability for POP3 and IMAP4 Clients — This new content-based routing function has been added that allows the server to be chosen based on the userid of the client logging in to POP3 or IMAP4. This new function increases the scalability and availability for Lotus Domino servers when used as a POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail servers.

  • Cross port affinity — Server affinity can occur for multiple ports versus one port. For example, now SSL connections (port x) can be sent to the same server to which HTTP transactions (port y) are already being sent, or vice versa.

  • Fixed weights in manager — The earlier version of Network Dispatcher required customers to choose between using fixed weights for servers or using the Manager function and Advisors, which dynamically set the weights. This is no longer required. Customers can set fixed weights (for example 80 — 20), while still running the manager and pulling information from Advisors.

  • WebSphere Application Server Custom Advisor — A sample custom advisor for use with WebSphere Application Server is now provided as sample code together with a Java servlet that would be the server-side counterpart of the custom advisor. Specifically, the sample shows how to make a custom advisor that will check the connectivity from the WebSphere Application Server to a back-end DB2® database.

  • Rule affinity override — Network Dispatcher rules are often used to set up an overflow server that displays a "server busy" message when a Web site is experiencing heavy load. If server affinity is used in this configuration, the end-user might be redirected back to the overflow server, even though the traffic has subsided. The Rule Affinity Override feature prevents this scenario, so requests get directed to the primary servers as soon as possible. This is accomplished by limiting the affinity for the overflow server.

  • Affinity address mask — Groups client requests based on common subnet addresses. When this feature is enabled, all subsequent connections coming in from the same subnet address will be directed to the same server. This feature gives preferential treatment to a given department or business partner.

  • Multiple address collocation — Customers can set the address of the collocated Network Dispatcher server to an address other than the non-forwarding address. Using multiple addresses for collocated servers provides additional flexibility needed in some network and server configurations.

  • Usability improvements:
    • Dispatcher and content-based rules can start a predefined configuration file which matches the configuration paradigm used by ISS.
    • Configuration files, if present, will be loaded automatically by all three components.
    • The GUI includes direct feedback that leads users through the new functionality as well as the current tasks.
    • Log setting controls provide consistency and error checking capability.
    • A CBR wizard was also added to Network Dispatcher to guide the configuration of the CBR component using both WTE and the CBR proxy.

Product Positioning

Edge Server resides at local and remote network boundaries and provides services on behalf of back-end servers to improve Web application performance, availability, and scalability.

For Internet service providers (ISPs) and enterprise customers Version 1 provides enhanced Web site availability, performance and scalability for Web applications. Essential in addressing the traffic growth, Web performance, and availability needs of e-business Web sites, Version 1 provides:

  • Caching
  • load balancing
  • Content-based routing (CBR)
  • Filtering functions

The integration of these rich functions and their wide array of features streamlines management and reduces cost for the Web site owner while providing improved customer satisfaction.

It can be used effectively to deliver these benefits with multivendor Web serving environments. It provides additional synergies when used with WebSphere Application Server and Commerce offerings, IBM eSP solution offerings, and the SecureWay™ offerings.

Edge Server is also positioned to play a strategic role as IBM addresses an industry-wide issue involving the centralized Web application model. The current centralized Web application model has resulted in the concentration of applications and user traffic to one, or at most several central server sites, creating hot spots and overload at the centralized application. This impacts the scalability and performance of large e-business Web sites. This centralization has also resulted in the movement of the application farther from the end user, resulting in greater overall network delays and susceptibility to bottlenecks within the network, impacting the end user's response times.

IBM intends to address these current limitations by evolving Edge Server in future releases into a companion WebSphere "edge" platform and robust set of services upon which a new breed of enterprise-class, network-based applications can be developed, deployed and managed. Over time, the product will evolve to incorporate dynamic processing capabilities to act as an extension to the central site application:

  • Enabling the offload and layering of dynamically generated content out to the "edges" of the network
  • Effectively scaling the front tier of the Web application model
  • Providing greater application performance by placing the application closer to the end user

IBM will work with its partners and enterprise customers to determine which dynamic capabilities are most valuable for implementation within the new "front tier" platform.
