Description

WebSphere Application Server for OS/390 is delivered as one product with two options:

  • WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Standard Edition for OS/390
  • WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Enterprise Edition for OS/390

Each includes:

  • Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.1.8
  • Site Analyzer

WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Standard Edition for OS/390

WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Standard Edition for OS/390 includes the following elements as part of its Web deployment environment:

  • Support for deployment of Java servlets written to the Javasoft Version 2.1 specification level.
  • Support for the deployment of Java Server Pages written to either the JavaSoft Version .91 or Version 1.0 specification level.
  • Support for deployment of Java Beans for consumption by Web Application components.
  • XML Document Structure Services which enable e-business applications that interchange data via eXtended Markup Language (XML) to parse, manipulate, and validate XML and eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL)-based content.
  • Support for deploying and managing Web components as a "Web application."
  • Support for managing HTTP Session state data, as described by the JavaSoft Version 2.1 Servlet API Specification, on behalf of Web applications residing in WebSphere Application servers residing on the same or different OS/390 images.
  • Database connection manager for managing pools of JDBC-based connections to relational databases. JDBC Version 1.0 specification level is supported in this release of WebSphere Application Server for OS/390. Note that JDBC is shipped with DB2.
  • Support for connecting to existing Enterprise Information Systems through the use of connectors that are compliant to IBM Common Connector Framework. Application development tools such as VisualAge® for Java Version 3.0 Enterprise Access Builder feature are capable of generating the application code which utilizes the connector implementations for access to existing systems. Among others, compliant connectors are available for access to CICS and IMS from this environment.
  • WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Standard Edition for OS/390 executes as a plug-in within the IBM HTTP Server for OS/390. In Version 3.02, the Application Server can be configured via a single XML-based configuration document. A Document Type Definition (DTD) is provided that allows the use of a wide range of XML validating editors by the administrator in configuring the server.
  • WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Standard Edition for OS/390 continues to derive its security services from the primitive provided by the hosting IBM HTTP server. This is consistent with behavior of previous releases of the product. Support for basic or certificate-based authentication and support for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is implied by this support.
  • WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Standard Edition for OS/390 can be deployed in all configurations supported by the IBM HTTP Server for OS/390. This includes support for operating the HTTP Server in scalable mode.
  • WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Standard Edition for OS/390 leverages the high-availability characteristics of a Parallel Sysplex® environment. By keeping session data in DB2 tables, session data is not exposed to failure of individual systems.

WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Enterprise Edition for OS/390

This option contains all of the function available in WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Standard Edition for OS/390 and also includes the IBM Component Broker run time, which is the run time supporting deployment of business object models based on CORBA objects and EJBs. CORBA objects can be developed in either Java or C++ and participate in a robust managed object framework supporting container management of the object lifecycle. The EJB support in this release is based on the EJB 1.0 specification level and is intended primarily for early exposure to the EJB programming model. Java and C++ Object Request Brokers for S/390 applications are provided. Java and C++ Business Objects are supported.

Component Broker is a cross-platform, distributed, object-oriented transaction server. It supports the development and deployment of large-scale object-oriented business solutions and incorporates a robust persistent object framework that facilitates the integration of existing CICS, IMS, and DB2 assets into a new object world. WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Enterprise Edition for OS/390 specifically addresses the needs of:

  • Programmers responsible for building mission-critical, enterprise-level, transactional application solutions using object technology
  • Enterprises that want to take advantage of the benefits of an object-oriented transaction server that is solidly grounded on the industrial-strength qualities of service OS/390 provides

Component Broker supports development and testing using advanced workstation tools such as IBM Object Builder for creating CORBA objects and IBM VisualAge for Java Integrated Development Environment for creating EJBs.

Procedural Application Adapter support provides connections to legacy transaction systems such as IMS and CICS. This support is for C++ and Java Business Objects only.

The Component Broker run time runs in a Parallel Sysplex environment that provides workload balancing and increased availability.

Site Analyzer

The workstation-based Site Analyzer focuses on developing basic traffic measurement functions while allowing the user to:

  • Gauge traffic volume (hits, visits)
  • Identify traffic sources (domains, subdomains, referrers)
  • Manage site integrity (link verification, site conformance)

These key features enable the user to enhance and improve the Web site content and performance, making Web sites more:

  • Enticing
  • Informative
  • Financially beneficial

The site analysis tools contain analyzers that can transform the raw server log data into valuable information that is stored in the DB2 database (delivered with the Site Analyzer). The client provides administrative, visualizing, and report-generating functions. From the client, you can schedule analysis tasks to run at specific time and/or time intervals, as well as schedule generating and publishing of the results as static or dynamic HTML reports. Progress status is broadcast to the interested clients and displayed as appropriate. After the analysis is completed, you can generate customized reports or view the data immediately through the client. The system comes with many predefined ready-to-use reports samples. Features include:

  • Detailed analysis of Web site content integrity, site performance, and usage statistics
  • Flexible client/server architecture that can support a team environment
  • Database for scalability and trending with historical data
  • Flexibility to customize and configure to suit end-user environments
  • Remote administration and report capabilities via the client

The Site Analyzer is delivered with each WebSphere Application Server for OS/390 order. Included are Windows Server and Windows Client plus Windows NT™ DB2, as well as AIX® and Sun Solaris Server plus AIX/Sun Solaris DB2. DB2 Universal Database® (UDB) is at the V5.2 level with Fixpak 10. Because Site Analyzer runs on a distributed platform, the logs generated by WebSphere Application Server for OS/390 must be transferred to the Site Analyzer for processing.

Java Development Kit (JDK)

JDK 1.1.8 is shipped with each WebSphere Application Server for OS/390 order.

Product Positioning

WebSphere Application Server for OS/390 extends the S/390 role as a premier server for enterprise e-business and exploits the S/390 hallmark qualities of service such as scalability, performance, security, and availability. Through the incorporation of open industry standards (such as HTML, HTTP, IIOP, Java, servlets, Java Server Pages, Enterprise Java Beans, and CORBA), new e-business applications and transactions can now be scaled-up for global deployment on the server of choice regardless of the development platform. Furthermore, new applications can be integrated with the extensive inventory of existing S/390 applications. The result is the rapid creation of production-ready e-business applications, along with the ability to evolve to the Enterprise Java Beans or CORBA-based deployment model of choice.
