The CATIA User Companion for Mechanical Design

The CATIA User Companion for Mechanical Design provides an integrated access to any type of information, support, and communication. This Java engine allows a client (a Java 1.1-enabled HTML browser, such as Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) to access learning resources.

The CATIA User Companion for Mechanical Design can equally address the needs of a small company with a fast installation on a single workstation and implement a larger company's training solution that meets client/server architecture based on Internet/intranet standards.

In addition to tracking user activity, the CATIA User Companion for Mechanical Design can mark where the user stopped in the course and restart at that point.

The user is presented through a color scheme parts of the course or skillets already finished and the ones not accessed yet. Courses can be taken out of order but the highlighting ensures that all proposed content will be eventually covered.

Learning Resources

The following learning resources available to the user are composed of:

  • Skillets
  • Courses
  • Job Aids

Skillets, the core of the CATIA WLS resources, are small, self-contained units of instruction. Each skillet allows a user to learn one procedure, feature, or function in thirty minutes or less. They may include explanations of the topic, demonstrations, monitored practice, or CATIA exercises based on user scenarios.

Skillets may be accessed directly, one at a time, through the CATIA User Companion for Mechanical Design built-in search engine, or in sequence when built into a course.

The courses provided in the products of WLS are either:

  • Update courses
  • Training courses
  • Role-based training

Each WLS product will include, at each CATIA release, an update course based on the content covered by the product. Courses can be seen as sets of skillets assembled into lessons to best suit general and industrial process scenarios. They are carefully designed in order to provide a progressive level of difficulty to the learner.

The CATIA User Companion for Mechanical Design, however, allows the course to be run in any sequence. It always provides a view on the topics previously covered and those not yet addressed.

CATIA Version 5 Release 3 WLS Products: Each product of WLS includes the CATIA User Companion Desktop required to run the learning resources (skillets, job aids, and courses) delivered with the product.

One product, CATIA User Companion for Mechanical Design, is available for Version 5 Release 3.

Additional Information

CATIA Version 5 Release 3 Web-Based Learning Solutions (WLS) Packaging and Products

Products are the elementary building blocks of CATIA WLS.

The WLS product may be ordered in two ways:

  • As a "shareable" product: CATIA Version 5 User Companion for Mechanical Design (5691-MDC)

In this case the product is delivered with its own license key, allowing the user to obtain the license at the beginning of his session, or to leave it for another user.

  • As an "enterprise" product: CATIA Version 5 User Companion for Mechanical Design — Enterprise Option (5691-MDE)

The product may be deployed on all CATIA mechanical seats. A seat is considered a CATIA mechanical seat if it licenses the CATIA configurations of MD2, ME2, or HD2. The enterprise product will be offered for a minimum number of five mechanical seats. If the customer orders new CATIA mechanical seats, the same number of CATIA User Companion for Mechanical Design licenses must be ordered. The price of an enterprise seat is greatly reduced compared to the price of a shareable order.

CATIA User Companion Desktop: The Java™ engine used to access Skillets, Courses, Job Aids.

Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS): A computer system that is produced as a result of applying the concept of Performance Support (PS). Software tools, knowledge, and learning experiences are integrated to improve business performance by:

Plug-in: A program associated to a mime-type and executed via the HTML browser on a given type file each time the file is transferred by HTTP. The plug-in is configured on well-known acronym in the training community to define the system that will support the user during his everyday operations, for example, beyond the initial training.

Client: PC or laptop with CPU, memory, and graphic card.

Applet: A Java program running within the context of a Java-enabled Web browser.

JDK: The Java Development Toolkit provided by Java Soft for Java development.

On the Server Side

  • HTTP server (Apache, Microsoft IIS, Netscape Server)

This requirement only applies if CATIA WLS is to be run in a client server mode communicating via the http protocol. (The system can also be installed without an http server. The learning resources are accessed in file mode via the browser.)

All components of CATIA WLS are Year 2000 compliant.

Planning Information

Installability: The CATIA WLS products are delivered on CD-ROM, including documentation. It is designed so that customers can install the system, customize it, and get started with few manual interventions and minimum skills within one hour.

Preventive service is delivered through the next release of CATIA WLS. The new release will include corrections to problems, depending on the time of their submission and their severity.

Corrective Service for CATIA WLS is delivered through "Service Packs" on a regular basis. A Service Pack includes corrections for blocking problems only. Each Service Pack supersedes the previous one and may be installed on top of the released level or on top of a previous Service Pack. Service Packs are available at the same time for all platforms currently supported.

No individual correction will be delivered between two Service Packs.

No update for online documentation will be provided through Service Packs.

Service Packs are available on CD-ROM via the IBM Support Centers for the duration of the service of each release. Once a release has been discontinued from service, only the last Service Pack will remain available for ordering through IBM Support Centers.

Customers may report problems for any given release of CATIA WLS for a limited time only. This reporting period ends four months after the general availability of the second subsequent release of CATIA WLS.

Customers may request a correction via a Service Pack for blocking problems. These requests for a given release of CATIA WLS may be made up to 4 months after the next release of CATIA WLS.

Maintenance support will be available until discontinued by IBM upon six months' written notice.

Direct Customer Support: Direct customer support is provided under the Engineering Support Services Enhanced Support Offering. This fee service enhances the customer's productivity by providing voice and electronic access to the Engineering Solutions Support Center. The Enhanced Support Offering help desk will answer questions pertaining to the installation, administration, use, and handling of suspected software defects for eligible products. For purposes of the Enhanced Support Offering, WLS is treated as a product. A valid contract for a CATIA Version 5 Enhanced Support configuration is a prerequisite to obtaining support for WLS.

Charges and additional information about the Enhanced Support Offering and other available Engineering Services offerings are available by going to the Engineering Solutions Web page:

Click on Engineering Services and then on Offerings .

5628-ACN SPO

CATIA Version 5 WLS programs for Microsoft Windows NT will be shipped under the 5628-ACN SPO. The SPO is required for all program shipments and future updates.

Initial orders placed for a program type 5691 without a corresponding order or MES for the 5628-ACN SPO will either fail order validation, or will not generate a media shipment. The SPO is designated to the processor on which the program type 5691 is licensed. Each customer number must have its own SPO.

Initial Orders: When ordering the first 5691-XXX product for CATIA Version 5 WLS, an order must also be placed for the 5628-ACN SPO. Both the 5691-XXX program order and the SPO must be for the same CPU system type/system number, and have the same scheduled shipment date.

Subsequent Licenses: The SPO must have a feature number for every CATIA Version 5 WLS product that is installed or on-order. Therefore, when a product that was not previously installed is ordered, the SPO must be updated.

To Update an On-Order System: When a license for a new 5691 program is ordered for an on-order system, the 5628-ACN SPO must be updated to reflect the feature number of the licensed program desired. Also, for asset registration and billing purposes an order for the individual licensed program type 5691 is required.

To Update an Installed System: When a license for a new 5691 program is ordered for an installed system, the 5628-ACN SPO must be updated to reflect the feature number of the licensed program desired.

5628-ACN Feature Numbers: The following program feature numbers are used with the 5628-ACN SPO to show which configurations and products are installed. This information is used for shipment of media. The maximum quantity of each of the features that may be specified is one for each of the 5691 programs.
