Overview

For customers that made DB2^® for OS/390^®, DB2/400, and DB2 for VSE and VM database servers the cornerstone of their e-business solutions, the DB2 Connect^® program helps leverage information by providing the performance, scalability, reliability, and availability needed for the most demanding e-commerce, CRM, BI, and ERP applications. DB2 Connect delivers the application enablement and powerful, highly scalable communication infrastructure for connecting Web, Windows™, UNIX^® (including Linux), and OS/2^® applications to S/390^® and AS/400^® data.

DB2 Connect Personal Edition gives you high-performance direct access from Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT™, Windows 2000, Linux, and OS/2 applications to S/390 and AS/400 data without gateways or host software. DB2 Connect delivers this capability to applications written to popular APIs such as ODBC, ADO, OLE DB, JDBC, SQLJ, DB2 CLI, and Embedded SQL. This means you can use spreadsheets such as Microsoft™ Excel and Lotus^® 1-2-3^® to analyze S/390 and AS/400 data, or use business intelligence tools from Business Objects, Brio, and Cognos to deliver critical information to make business decisions. With DB2 Connect, you can also develop your own client-server applications using rapid application development tools such as:

DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition is a DB2 communication server designed to address demanding requirements of mid-tier Web servers and application servers in high volume transactional and business intelligence environments. Description

Unparalleled Scalability

DB2 Connect provides the foundation for your business to manage the explosive growth of the Internet and intranet applications. DB2 Connect supports millions of users and terabytes of data in leading e-business applications worldwide.

Performance and Capacity Enhancements made in this release are as follows:

• Connection concentration allows connections from multiple applications or from multiple threads of the same application to be multiplexed on to a common database server connection. When an application completes a transaction (commit or rollback), DB2 Connect makes the database connection owned by the application available to other applications. This new support is an addition to, and an enhancement of, the "connection pooling" support provided in DB2 Connect Version 6.1. Unlike connection pooling, connection concentration does not require that an application disconnect from the database for its connection can be reused by another application. It is only required that transaction be completed. Connection concentration greatly increases capacity and throughput of DB2 Connect servers and reduces resources required by S/390 and AS/400 database servers.
• Support for multiple TCP/IP listeners provides the ability to handle more concurrent TCP/IP connections and gets around O/S limits on the number of connections per process.
• Static SQL profiling for ODBC, ADO, and DB2 CLI applications allows DB2 Connect users to get the benefits of static SQL such as performance and application-based security even when running applications developed using ODBC, ADO, and DB2 CLI APIs. Static profiling allows the database administrator to capture SQL during a profiling session for applications developed using these dynamic SQL APIs. Captured SQL can then be bound to a database to generate static SQL packages. When end-users execute previously profiled applications, DB2 Connect intercepts dynamic SQL calls and attempts to match them against statements captured during the profiling session. If a match is found, DB2 Connect executes a corresponding static SQL instead of the dynamic SQL issued by the application.

Available Anytime

DB2 Connect is built for reliability and availability, so it's up when you are open for business. On the Internet, that means all the time. To support this reliability and availability, DB2 Connect provides the following enhancements:

• Improved support for OS/390 Work Load Manager (WLM) delivers better fail-over and load-balance capabilities for DB2 for OS/390 servers in Parallel SYSPLEX environments. When connection concentration is turned on, every transaction processed by the DB2 Connect server is sent to the Parallel SYSPLEX member deemed most appropriate by the OS/390 Workload Manager based on availability and load of the SYSPLEX. You can be assured an outage of a SYSPLEX member will not impact availability of your DB2 for OS/390 data to client-server and Web applications. You can also rest assured your investment in S/390 hardware is fully utilized in most demanding Web and client-server applications as this support ensures even distribution of the work based on the utilization of the entire SYSPLEX.
• DB2 Connect integrates with native O/S clustering capabilities of Windows NT, Windows 2000, and UNIX systems to deliver uninterrupted access to S/390 and AS/400 data. For example, DB2 Connect servers running on Windows NT and Windows 2000 can utilize Microsoft Cluster Services, users of AIX^® can rely on HACMP, and SUN users can take advantage of Solaris Clusters to deliver fail-over capability for their DB2 Connect servers.

  DB2 Connect also integrates with network load balancing and high-availability solutions such as SecureWay™ Network Dispatcher to provide uninterrupted balanced operation for a group of DB2 Connect servers. When deployed with SecureWay Network Dispatcher, a group of DB2 Connect servers appears as a single server. Failure of any one server results in work being distributed between the remaining active members of the server group so continuous operation is maintained.

Application Development

DB2 Connect delivers the tools, including Java and Web tools, you need to rapidly deploy applications on the Internet or anywhere. Here are the enhancements in this release:

• Addition of a native OLE DB provider allows application developers on Windows platforms to build applications using the latest version of the ADO API. Users of rapid application development tools such as Microsoft VisualBasic, Access, InterDev, Borland Delphi, and many others will find this native OLE DB provider gives you high-performance implementation for mission-critical applications.
• An improved Stored Procedure Builder helps application developers build, test, and deploy stored procedures on DB2 for OS/390 servers, as well as DB2 in the Intel, UNIX, and OS/400^® servers. Stored Procedure Builder integrates with IBM VisualAge^® for Java and Microsoft Visual C++ and Visual Basic development tools, providing a single integrated environment for building client and server pieces of an application.
• Building Applications with MS Visual Studio
  • The Visual Basic and Visual C++ Stored Procedure Builder Add-In for building and deploying stored procedures written in Java or the new SQL Procedure language.
  • The Visual C++ Tools Add-In to launch DB2 tools such as the Control Center, or the Client Configuration Assistant.
  • The Visual C++ Project Add-in to automate the various tasks of developing embedded SQL applications in C++ for DB2, such as managing the pre-compilation step, generating new stored procedures in C++, and generating C++ code to execute SQL statements and call existing stored procedures.
• DB2 Connect enhances support for BEA Tuxedo. Customers are now able to build applications that use BEA Tuxedo coordinated transactions that update S/390, AS/400 databases, and other X/Open XA-compliant resource managers in the same transaction. In addition, DB2 Connect provides support for XA tightly-coupled transactions involving S/390 and AS/400 databases.

Enterprise Integration and Operation Management

DB2 Connect Version 7 continues to enhance customers' ability to deploy DB2 for OS/390, DB2/400, and DB2 for VSE and VM into diverse enterprise environments through the following enhancements:

• Windows 2000 exploitation:
  • Use Active Directory to locate databases and servers
  • Support single sign-on using Kerberos
  • Support Kerberos and Server/Encrypt security for mixed environments
  • Support for NTLM userid length up to the maximum 20 characters
  • Launch DB2 Control Center from the Computer Management Console

  DB2 Connect meets all the requirements for Windows 2000 Server Certification and upgrade pack is available on Web for migration from Windows 9x to Windows 2000 Professional.

• Support for Microsoft ODBC File DSN to ease deployment of DB2 Connect for large numbers of end-users.
• Light Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) client on AIX and Solaris.
• Microsoft's SNA Server support for Two-Phase Commit. DB2 users with MS Back Office can involve Windows, OS/400, and host database servers in multisite update transactions.
• In Version 7, the DB2 Control Center continues to enhance the usability of DB2 for OS/390 and administration of DB2 for OS/390 objects from the workstation. Some of the enhancements for the Control Center are in support of DB2 for OS/390 utility usability. Users can now:
  • Define collections of objects
  • Retrieve a list (four types) of data sets that reside on an OS/390 system
  • Restart utilities from the last committed point or phase

Leveraging Information

DB2 helps you extract, consolidate, integrate, summarize, analyze, and share information across your enterprise to identify new insights and opportunities. Here are the enhancements:

Distributed Query: The leading distributed join technology from DB2 DataJoiner^® is added to DB2 Connect server products to simplify end-user access and application development. This function supports joining tables across distributed and heterogeneous databases making it completely transparent to the querying application. It:

• Translates automatically DB2 SQL syntax to the backend database syntax.
• Compensates for function in the DB2 SQL that may not be supported in the backend database SQL.
• Optimizes access to minimize network traffic and increase performance. Distributed joins across DB2 and OLE DB databases are provided with DB2 Connect. With the addition of the optional DB2 Relational Connect feature, distributed query can also incorporate data from Oracle databases.

Data Warehouse Center provides an integrated, easy-to-use infrastructure for creating and managing data warehouses. The Data Warehouse Center eases the tasks of:

• Registering and accessing data sources
• Defining data extraction and transformation steps
• Populating data warehouses
• Automating and monitoring warehouse management processes
• Managing and interchanging metadata

  The new GUI integrates with the DB2 Control Center and provides a schema and process modeller. It offers full replacement, incremental, and replication style data movement options for flexibility in maintaining the data warehouse.

Web Ready

Built for the Web, DB2 Connect supports all the key Internet standards. A Web server and built-in Java support make it easy for you to deploy e-business applications.

Java Enhancements: Support for Java Transaction API (JTA) and JDBC 2.0 distributed transactions used by IBM WebSphere and other Java servers comply with Java Transaction Service (JTS) 1.0 specification. This allows customers to develop Java applications that participate in distributed transactions, which involve multiple databases and multiple application components such as Enterprise Java Beans (EJB).

Net.Data Enhancements: The following enhancements are introduced to Net.Data, a core Web enabling technology for DB2, provided with each DB2 Connect server offerings:

• Support for new DB2 XML data types provided by XML Extender
• Macro switch to XML or XHTML output for built-in functions, default formatting of tables, and query results
• Generating XML documents from DB2 tables
• Attaching files to e-mail message and uploading browser files

WebSphere: A complimentary copy of WebSphere Application Server, Standard Edition Version 3.02 is being included in the DB2 Connect server product packages. (Note: Version 3.5 will slipstream later.)

IBM WebSphere Application Server, Standard Edition provides the Java servlet and Java Server Pages (JSP) environment supported by the IBM Network Computing Framework for e-business, and tools like IBM VisualAge for Java. (Note: VisualAge for Java package will be included in the Developer's package.)

Data Access Everywhere

DB2 empowers your mobile workers by putting enterprise information in the palms of their hands, and on multiple platforms. When combined with DB2 Everyplace and IBM Mobile Connect™, DB2 Connect allows you to deliver critical S/390 and AS/400 data to hand held devices running Palm Computing Platform, Windows CE, or communicators and smartphones running EPOC.

This release of DB2 Connect coincides with the announcement of a beta program of DB2 Everyplace, a server targeted at administration of DB2 Everyplace Clients on hand-held devices.

DB2 Connect also introduces support for Windows 2000, and continued support for Dynix/NUMA-Q on the NUMA-Q hardware platform.

DB2 Relational Connect , a separately priced feature, provides native read access to Oracle databases. This can be used with built-in heterogeneous query capabilities to formulate queries across DB2, Oracle, and OLE DB databases or with the Data Warehouse Center to accelerate access performance from Oracle sources for loading a DB2 data warehouse. DB2 Relational Connect makes Oracle access completely transparent to the calling application and supports the full SELECT API features of DB2. Differences between the DB2 capabilities and the Oracle function are masked from the application without any loss of function due to automatic compensation built into DB2.

Technical Information

Hardware Requirements: The hardware requirement for the DB2 products is a central processing unit (CPU), with the processing capacity of an Intel 486 processor, or higher.

Compatibility: DB2 Clients for Version 5.2 will continue to operate without modifications with DB2 Connect Version 7.1 products.

DB2 Version 7.1 products support connection to DB2 Connect Version 6.1 Servers. DB2 Clients for Version 7.1 will operate without modifications with DB2 Connect Version 6.1 Server products.

DB2 Connect Personal Edtion for Windows, Version 7.1 no longer provides an integrated SNA stack. If SNA connectivity is required, a supported SNA product must be installed. Supported SNA products are listed in the DB2 Connect Personal Edition Quick Beginnings Version 7.1 in the Planning for Installation chapter, under Software Requirements and Hardware/Software Requirements.

If you are migrating from previous versions of DB2 Connect Personal Edition with the Integrated SNA stack installed, SNA connectivity may continue to work. However, this is an unsupported configuration. It is strongly recommended you install one of the supported SNA stacks.

Connectivity Matrix: The following table represents the host and AS/400^® database server versions and access protocols supported when accessed via DB2 Connect. Functions, which are currently listed as not supported may be supported at a future time by the given database server. Refer to the specific database server plans to determine when support will be provided. DB2 Connect provides the capability to support all the listed protocols.

TCP/IP Multisite Update

Applications can perform multisite updates (two-phase commit) when the database server is accessed via TCP/IP from DB2 Connect.

Applications can perform multisite updates (two-phase commit) when the database server is accessed via SNA from DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition for AIX, OS/2, and Windows. All other DB2 Connect platforms only provide TCP/IP multisite update support.

Performance and Capacity Enhancement Limitations: Connection Concentration Limitations

• Connection concentration can only be used by DB2 Version 7, or later, clients.
• Only DB2 for OS/390 or DB2 for AS/400 hosts are supported.
• Connection concentration relies on the TCP/IP protocol to establish inbound connections from local and remote clients to the DB2 Connect server. Only inbound connections using TCP/IP or Local (IPC) will be able to take advantage of pooled outbound connections. Other protocols can be used between remote DB2 clients and the DB2 Connect server (for example, NETBIOS, IPX, APPC), but connection concentration will not be used.
• You should not use the static SET statement in your client applications if connection concentration is enabled on the DB2 Connect server. DB2 will not return an error if you use static SET, but your application and any other applications that share the same outbound connection could be adversely affected.
• For SET statements, only immediate execution is supported.
• If you declare global temp tables, they must be closed explicitly at transaction or transaction branch boundaries. Failure to close the tables may result in an error during later transactions.
• For XA tightly coupled transaction support, all applications that participate in the same XA transaction must use the same DB2 Connect server to connect to the host or AS/400 database server. This implies for example, in a BEA Tuxedo environment, if a BEA Tuxedo tpcall API is invoked, the invoked application must use the same DB2 Connect server to access common DB2 database servers.
• Withhold cursors must be closed at a transaction boundary (COMMIT) to utilize connection concentration. Applications that do not close, withhold cursors will be unable to take advantage of connection concentration. That is, the connection used by the application will not be shared.
• All applications participating in the same XA transaction must have the same CCSID and use the same user ID to make the connection.
• If a connection between a DB2 Connect server and a host or AS/400 database server was established to support multisite update (two-phase commit), then that connection can only be used shared amongst other applications requiring multisite update. Similarly, connections established by applications for single-phase commit purposes can only be shared amongst other application requiring one-phase commit.
• Password encryption cannot be used when connection concentration is active. This means connections defined with authentication type DCS_ENCRYPT will fail to connect to the host or AS/400 database server.
• Embedded dynamic SQL applications are not supported when connection concentration is active. Dynamic prepare requests from embedded dynamic SQL applications will be rejected. Your applications should be altered to either use static SQL or to use ODBC/CLI for dynamic SQL statements.

Static SQL Profiling Limitations

• JDBC/ODBC/CLI Static Profiling currently targets straight forward applications and is not meant for complex applications with many functional components and complex program logic during execution.
• An SQL statement must have successfully executed for it to be captured in a profiling session.
• In a statement matching session, unmatched dynamic statements will continue to execute as dynamic JDBC/ODBC/CLI calls.
• An SQL statement must be identical character-by-character to the one that was captured and bound to be a valid candidate for statement matching. Spaces are significant:
  For example, "COL = 1" is considered different than "COL=1".

  For similar reasons, it is recommended that applications use parameter markers in place of literals to improve match hits.

• When executing an application with pre-bound static SQL statements, dynamic registers that control dynamic statement behavior will have no effect on the statements converted to static.
• If an application issues DDL statements for objects that are referenced in subsequent DML statements, you will find all of these statements in the capture file and the JDBC/ODBC/CLI Static Profiling Bind Tool will attempt to bind them. The bind will be successful with DBMS's that support the VALIDATE(RUN) bind option, such as DB2 for OS/390 and DB2 UDB Version 7 for UNIX, Windows, and OS/2 but fail with ones that do not support VALIDATE(RUN) such as DB2 UDB Version 6 for UNIX, Windows, and OS/2. In this case, the application should not use Static Profiling.
• The Database Administrator may edit the capture file to add, change, or remove SQL statements, based on application specific requirements.

Available Anytime Limitations

• Improved Support for OS/390 Work Load Manager and Parallel Sysplex^® Limitations

  DB2 UDB for OS/390, Version 6, or later, is required. Since this improved support is dependent on connection concentration, then connection concentration limitations also apply. Refer to Connection Concentration Limitations section.

Application Development Limitations

• Native OLE DB Driver Limitations
  • OLE DB driver does not support Microsoft Transaction Server coordinated transactions.
  • Server side cursors are limited to Read Only Forward Only Cursors.

    To use scrolled, updated cursors, client side cursors must be used.

• BEA Tuxedo Enhanced Support

  This enhanced support is dependent on connection concentration. Refer to Connection Concentration Limitations.

Planning Information

Licensing Information: DB2 Connect is made available as three separate products: DB2 Connect Personal Edition, DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition, and DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition. DB2 Connect Personal Edition is sold for use by one user on one workstation, for connection to DB2 Data — enterprise wide. DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition is available with the Standard Server/User Model licensing option. DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition is on an Unlimited Usage model based on the Millions of Service Units per hour (MSU) entitlements of the DB2 Universal Database for OS/390.

Customers are responsible for determining their license requirements with the DB2 product family. Use the following information to assist you in determining which of the different methods of entitlement are best for you.

Licensing of DB2 Connect Personal Edition: DB2 Connect Personal Edition is licensed for installation and use by an individual user at one workstation. Remote connections to DB2 Universal Database Satellite Edition and DB2 Universal Database Personal Edition are allowed for administration purposes only.

Licensing of DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition

Standard Server/User Model (like Version 6.1)

Licensing of DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition: With this product, two separate licenses must be ordered. One is the OS/390 host server entitlement and the other is the appropriate number of MSU entitlements.

User Entitlement: Under this entitlement option, DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition licenses include entitlement for one concurrent or registered user. Customers should plan on which of the two counting methods should be applied to the DB2 server products based on usage requirements and then obtain additional user entitlements to the extent required.

The definition of concurrent and registered users is as follows:

1. Concurrent Users: A concurrent user is a person, application, or device that has established a connection to one or more databases on one server. A user with multiple connections to a single server counts as only one concurrent user. The one exception is where multiple connections are made by a multiplexing program, application server, or other program that connects to DB2 providing access on behalf of other users. When these configurations are in use, customers need to consider each concurrent user of that program as a concurrent DB2 user. In the concurrent user model, the customer must ensure that each server is licensed for the maximum number of users that will use that server product at any one time.

   The concurrent user licensing model is the only choice in situations where the identity of users is unknown. The concurrent user model is also appropriate where users require only occasional access to a particular server.

2. Registered Users: A registered user is a person, application or device entitled to establish one or more connections to any authorized server install of a DB2 Universal Database or DB2 Connect product in the customer's enterprise, either directly or through a multiplexing program or application server. Registered Users of DB2 Workgroup Edition are counted separately, and DB2 User entitlements are not transferable between products. Customers should compare the total number of users requiring access to the DB2 server product with the sum of user entitlements provided with each install license, and obtain additional user entitlements if required.

   Registered users may be the appropriate choice where there are many users, for example, at client workstations, who need to access databases on multiple database servers, or who connect to databases for long periods of time. Determining required licensing and monitoring the licensing requirements is the responsibility of the customer.

The DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition, when used with server install and user restrictions, is not restricted on the basis of the number of processors at the server machine. Connections from DB2 Satellite Edition, and DB2 Personal Edition may not be counted as DB2 Users for the purposes of determining the licensing requirements for the server machine.

Installation Entitlements: For DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition, customers must purchase an installation entitlement for each server installation. Installations are not restricted under the unlimited usage model.

Unlimited Edition for Unlimited Usage: This product provides customers with media and license to deploy either DB2 Connect Personal Edition code or DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition code. In addition, licensing and charges are not based on the number of users but on the Millions of Service Units per Hour (MSU) entitlements of the DB2 for Universal Database for OS/390. When you order the DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition, you are shipped the full set of DB2 Connect code. With this product, two separate licenses must be ordered. One is the OS/390 host server entitlement and the other is the appropriate number of MSU entitlements.

Special Licensing Considerations

Web Connections: For customers using DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition server/user model, Web users require user entitlements. With DB2 Connect Unlimited, access is available by obtaining license entitlements depending on the size of the host machine. Once appropriate "MSU" entitlements are obtained corresponding to the host processing power, the customer has unlimited access to the host data. To determine the licensing required for your host system, contact your host DB2 sales representative.

Complimentary Products: IBM provides licensed copies of complimentary products in their product boxes. Customers are responsible for independent product registration of these products, and obtaining any desired Upgrades for these complimentary products. There is no guarantee for customers to receive any free upgrade or guaranteed level of code to the products.

Metric Descriptions

• Users
  • Each person, or user, making a connection to a host computer system must have a separate entitlement. When concentrating software is used through the Internet, the users of that concentration software must each be counted as users.
• Installs
  • Each installation of the program must have a separate entitlement.
• Host Servers
  • A host server must be obtained for each independent server being connected to with DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition. If the server is part of a sysplex (connected OS/390 servers), only one host server entitlement is required. If multiple host servers, or multiple sysplexes are used, then each host server must be obtained for each host server (or Sysplex).
• MSUs
  • An MSU entitlement must be obtained for each MSU on the DB2 host system. When this option is used, the customer need not count users of the DB2 Connect product. Only one server install is required for each customer utilizing the MSU licensing.

For DB2 Connect Personal Edition, you must acquire one license for each installation. If the total number of workstation installations exceeds the number of licenses, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IPLA.

Charges for DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition are based on the number of users, either concurrent or registered. You must count all users the same way, but it is your decision whether to count your users as concurrent users or registered users. In either case, you must acquire one authorization for each user. The total number of users cannot exceed the number authorized by the applicable Proof of Entitlement. If the total number exceeds the quantity in the Proof of Entitlement, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IPLA. As an alternative to user counting, IBM is introducing a MSU model which allows unlimited user access, as long as the host machine is fully entitled for its processing capacity. Refer to the Licensing section for more details, and the Ordering Information section, under DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition for ordering information.

DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition Version 7.1 is not restricted by the number of processors on the server machine.
