Overview
WebSphere Transcoding Publisher makes your data work for you, when and
where you need it, to help you reach and service your customers better,
reduce costs, and improve productivity. Transcoding Publisher is
server-side software that filters and reformats information that you own,
or have sufficient rights to filter and reformat, from existing host and
Web applications, tailoring the presentation to be effective for
different organizations, different device form factors, and different
network limitations.
WebSphere Transcoding Publisher includes:
-
A standard set of
transcoders
to convert HTML documents, reformat images, convert XML documents into
other variants of XML by selecting and applying stylesheets, and convert
HTML into WML.
-
A standard set of
device and network profiles
that enable customized conversions for client devices and network
services based on characteristics such as device form factor and network
cost and speed.
-
A
pluggable infrastructure
for sequencing transcoders, monitoring requests, resolving conversion
parameters based on network and device profiles, and exploiting a
separate Web cache. The infrastructure controls the way different
transcoders work together and provides them with common services.
-
A
developer's toolkit
consisting of documentation and samples for customizing existing
transcoders, creating new transcoders, and creating new device profiles.
-
Local administration tools for installing, configuring, and monitoring
WebSphere Transcoding Publisher as well as integrating and configuring
new profiles and transcoders.
Key Prerequisites
The following are the hardware prerequisites for each of the five
software operating systems of WebSphere Transcoding Publisher:
-
For Windows NT server, Windows 2000 server, and Red Hat Linux V6.1,
each of these platforms requires a personal computer with 30 MB of
available disc space and a Pentium 11/266 MHz or higher processor, and
128 MB of memory.
-
For AIX® on RS/6000® and Sun Solaris, 30 MB of available disc space
is required and a 166 MHz or higher and 128 MB of memory.
Planned Availability Date March 31, 2000
Description
WebSphere Transcoding Publisher provides IBM customers the opportunity to
extend the value of their existing host and Web-based data and
applications by dynamically tailoring information that they own, or have
sufficient rights to tailor, to the requirements of the destination
environment. As a result, WebSphere Transcoding Publisher enables
seamless, universal access to data.
Legacy Data to the Web and Handheld Information Appliances
WebSphere Transcoding Publisher enables IBM customers to re-purpose their
existing host data assets. WebSphere Transcoding Publisher brings their
legacy data forward to the Web and to the new breed of personal data
assistants by dynamically converting formats and presentation style of
the host data. IBM SecureWay Host Publisher and Transcoding Publisher
together can reformat legacy data to Web formats such as HTML and then
tailor it for handheld information devices. WebSphere Transcoding
Publisher extends the reach of your legacy data to any point along the
network without the need to rewrite or port existing host data and
applications.
Seamless Business-to-Business Communications
For your data to have value to customers, Business Partners or Resellers,
it must be easily accessible and delivered in a usable format. This
means accounting for disparate systems, data formats, and organizational
preferences. WebSphere Transcoding Publisher allows data to be
universally accessible. Transcoding Publisher converts formats and
presentation layouts so that they are optimally tailored for the
end-user and the end-user's system environment. Integrated with IBM
WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Transcoding Publisher not only
makes your data Web-ready but also enables IBM customers to build,
manage, and deploy powerful, portable Web-based applications.
Year 2000
This product does not have date dependencies and is therefore Year 2000
ready.

Product Positioning
WebSphere Transcoding Publisher is targeted at customers who want to
extend their data and applications to handheld pervasive devices
.
The Web is moving from the desktop to the new breed of handheld
information appliances. WebSphere Transcoding Publisher enables IBM
customers to maintain communications with mobile workers, extend services
to existing customers using mobile devices, and reach new mobile customer
segments.
Simplify Business-to-Business Communications
WebSphere Transcoding Publisher allows IBM customers to tailor their
data, or data that they have sufficient rights to tailor, and
applications across the Internet, Extranet, and Intranet to customers,
Business Partners, and resellers. WebSphere Transcoding Publisher
eliminates the need to rewrite applications for new environments or port
data to new systems. With WebSphere Transcoding Publisher, IBM customers
can customize the formats and information that is presented to Business
Partners and resellers.

Security, Auditability, and Control
WebSphere Transcoding Publisher uses the security and auditability
features of the particular operating system that it runs on.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation
of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls
in application systems and communication facilities.
Ordering Information
WebSphere Transcoding Publisher V1.1 is a standalone product with one
charge unit processors. It is available in units of one. The
program package (CD-ROM) is required for the first processor on the first
server. A "one processor install entitlement" is required for each
processor beyond the first one.
The price of WebSphere Transcoding Publisher V1.1 is based on the number
of processors in the system executing all or any part of WebSphere
Transcoding Publisher. In the case of a symmetric multiprocessor (SMP)
system, the customer must also acquire the "one processor install
entitlement".
The following example illustrates the pricing methodology: Two 4-way
SMPs, for standalone systems in a larger system, would require the
WebSphere Transcoding Publisher V1.1 program package and seven "one
processor install entitlements".
