WebSphere Commerce Studio

This product is the new design and development environment for the WebSphere Commerce Suite and is available in two developer kits. Each kit provides an easy-to-use toolset to help Web site authors and developers create an e-commerce Web site. Description

WebSphere Commerce Suite, V4.1 provides a wide range of easy-to-use features and functions for conducting business in a secure and scalable manner on the Internet. It supports business-to-consumer, business-to-business, and e-marketplace environments with a complete e-commerce solution, from catalog and storefront creation to payment processing and integration to back-end systems.

Commerce sites built with WebSphere Commerce Suite can easily integrate with internal and external systems and grow with the changing need of an e-business.

The WebSphere Commerce Suite consists of the following:

Server — manages the interface to the buyers, who can browse, save, query, and order items in the interactive catalog.
Commerce Studio — provides a powerful authoring and administration environment, allowing store personnel to design the buying process and create an interactive product catalog.

WebSphere Commerce Suite, V4.1 replaces Net.Commerce, V3.2. The suite provides leading-edge enhancements while retaining all the capabilities of Net.Commerce.

WebSphere Commerce Suite offers a wide range of new features and functions, including:

Industry-Leading E-commerce Platform

There are several enhancements that make WebSphere Commerce Suite the industry's leading e-commerce product.

WebSphere Commerce Suite is built on the industry-leading application server WebSphere Advanced Server, V3.
Java™ Server Page (JSP) enablement provides support for all catalog and product display. This enhancement takes a significant step in the evolution to a full Java environment.
Integration with IBM Payment Manager, V2.1 provides more payment options with cassettes for SET and CyberCash.
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) for shopper registry allows sharing of user registry information amongst various subscribers. LDAP servers supported are Netscape Directory Server, Domino, and SecureWay™ Directory.
IBM HTTP Server is included.
Order notification lets merchants notify customers via e-mail to confirm an order.
Domino Integration with WebSphere Commerce Suite provides single sign-on, allowing all shoppers to be managed by Domino with a simplified and familiar management process. X.509 certificate support allows automatic recognition and authentication of customers whose browsers are enabled with these certificates.

New Commerce Studio Tool Set

WebSphere Commerce Studio is built on top of WebSphere Studio V3 providing an easy-to-use toolset that can reduce time and effort when creating, managing, and debugging Web applications.
WebSphere Commerce Studio provides significant improvements in usability and functionality of site creation and management. It includes a Page Designer, hiding the complexity of Web-page creation plus a Workbench to assist in managing the content and versioning of site pages. A Store Creator Wizard and a Store Profile Editor allows you to easily create and modify store information.

Improved Relationship Management

With this capability, the merchant can provide a unique and satisfying shopping experience to customers by personalizing each customer's visit to their Web site. This can lead to improved site traffic and sales. New functionality includes:

A Business Rules Engine enabling administrators or business analysts to specify a set of rules resulting in a personalized experience for the customer. The system can recommend products based on shopper information such as demographics. It can also cross-sell or up-sell products based on items that the shopper intends to purchase.
Associations, packages and bundles can be incorporated into the merchant's system. Associations are the relating of one product with complimentary products such as a belt that goes with a pair of pants. Packages are the creation of an orderable unit which cannot be broken up but may be sold separately for more money, such as a computer system. A bundle is several items that can be sold separately but may be grouped (such as a complete ski outfit) to hopefully entice the customer to buy related items.
Auctions are being provided as an additional selling model for businesses. Support for three common types of auctions are provided:
- Open cry (price is bid up)
- Dutch bid (price starts high and is bid down)
- Sealed bid (bid is confidential and viewable only by the seller)
Product Advisor feature enables e-businesses to provide its customers with several methods to help them quickly find the right products based on features, or a friendly question and answer process using parametric searching. The Product Advisor feature has been enhanced to support WebSphere Studio and JSP support.

WebSphere Catalog Architect Content Management

Key enhancements have been made to Catalog Architect (CA) that add additional capability to make it more powerful in creating and managing catalogs.

Client-Server Database Support enables centralized data with improved data sharing and access. CA can now have the client and server running separate machines as well as supporting local databases.
Enhanced Extensible Markup Language (XML) to support adding, modifying, and deleting catalog objects or create/update information in batch mode. CA now supports a superset of the common Commerce Suite XML DTD.
Merchandising Support includes aggregation of items in kits, bundles, sets and packages, and product or item associations with cross-sells, up-sells or substitutions.
Field Values SQL Access simplifies data entry and increases validity of data. Enables user to create a drop-down list of pick values for populating CA.
Ability to Disable/Enable Show/Hide Fields that are not to be managed by CA. This enables certain fields that are sourced from inventory, availability or other backend ERP systems to be "turned off" so that they will not be populated or validated by CA. This avoids any conflict between CA and these disabled or hidden fields.
Improved migration for existing Commerce Suite stores. Migration will retain existing reference numbers in Commerce Suite and avoid disabling any macros or orders referencing these numbers.
Support for WebSphere Studio's Store Creator for creating a store and the products contained within it.
National Language Support has been provided for CA in nine major non-English languages.

Business Integration

Several enhancements have been made to the business-to-business and business-management capabilities.

Batch User Registration allows a single person to register up to tens of thousands of users in a single update rather than having to register them individually and also provides centralized control for access privileges and authorization levels.
Core Business-to-Business Messages are provided in XML format so that the exchange of data using emerging industry standards can facilitate universal exchange of business information.
Order Processing has been improved to enhance the customer experience. This includes a quick order capability that bypasses many current steps, orders based on previous orders, and processes regularly scheduled orders automatically.

Start, Pro, Developer Edition, Professional Developer Edition, and Catalog Architect

The enhancements described above are available in the Start Edition; however, Product Advisor, Auctions, and Personalization are only available in the Pro Edition.

Also both Developer Editions include WebSphere Studio; however, only the Professional Developer Edition includes CA and tools to create a personalized Web experience for your customers. Start customers may order CA separately.

The Developer Edition, Professional Developer Edition, and CA are available only on a Windows NT platform. These products can be used to develop your site for a Windows NT, AIX, or Solaris Operating Environment platform.

WebSphere Payment Manager

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

The service end date for this Year-2000-ready product is December 31, 2001.

Technical Information

Specified Operating Environment

Recommended Minimum WebSphere Commerce Studio Development Requirements: The recommended minimum processor for the Windows NT version is a Pentium™ (166 MHz, or higher) IBM PC server or compatible with 256 MB of RAM, 520 MB of free disk space for program files, and a CD-ROM drive.

The recommended minimum processor for the AIX version is an RS/6000^® (Model C20, 167 MHz, or higher) system capable of running AIX, with 256 MB of RAM, 900 MB of free disk space for program files, and a CD-ROM drive.

The recommended minimum processor for the Solaris Operating Environment is a Sun SPARC or UltraSPARCstation capable of running the Solaris Operating Environment, with 256 MB of RAM, 320 MB of swap space, 400 MB of free disk space for program files, and a CD-ROM drive.

Recommended Minimum WebSphere Commerce Suite Production Requirements: Production requirements will vary widely depending on many factors associated with the creation and use of your Web site. Contact your IBM representative to help determine your specific requirements.

Recommended Minimum WebSphere Catalog Architect Requirements: The recommended minimum processor is a Pentium (400 MHz, or higher) IBM PC server or compatible with 128 MB of RAM, 400 MB of free disk space for program files, and a CD-ROM drive.

Software Requirements: For WebSphere Commerce Suite you require Microsoft™ Windows NT Server V4.0 with Service Pack 4, or AIX V4.3.2 or 4.3.3, or Solaris Operating Environment, V2.6 or 2.7. In addition, the WebSphere Commerce Suite Administrator requires the use of a standard Internet browser that supports Java 1.1, JavaScript, cookies, and frames such as Netscape Communicator V4.

For Oracle ODBC support, Oracle 8.0.5 or 8.1.5 and ODBC drivers are required. For Netscape Enterprise Server, NES V3.6.3 is required.

For WebSphere Catalog Architect you require Microsoft Windows NT Server with Service Pack 5. WebSphere Commerce Suite Start or Pro for Windows NT, AIX, or the Solaris Operating Environment, V4.1 using DB2^®, V6.1 (included) or Oracle is required as a prerequisite.

Programming skills are necessary for customization work.

Performance Considerations: Response time in an Internet environment depends on a variety of network and telecommunication factors, such as line speeds, local network constraints, and available processing capacity on the Web server and application server.

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities: You should consider the installation, design, implementation, and maintenance of the WebSphere Commerce Suite system. It is recommended strongly that IBM Global Services or Business Partners be used to assist in these activities, unless adequate in-house skills are available.

In order to implement a complete WebSphere Commerce Suite system, you or a Business Partner should have the following skills:

Basic systems and network administration skills for either Windows NT, AIX, or the Solaris Operating Environment
An understanding of TCP/IP protocols including HTTP and SSL

Security, Auditability, and Control

WebSphere Commerce Suite uses the security and auditability features of the Windows NT, AIX, and Solaris Operating Environment operating systems. The SSL protocol, an Internet open standard, is used to encrypt communications between the Web browser and the Web server. The Payment Manager of WebSphere Commerce Suite supports the SET Secure Electronic Transaction protocol.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

The price of WebSphere Commerce Suite (WCS), Start and Pro Editions is based on the number of processors and the number of merchant sites in the system or node executing all or any part of the WCS Program. The maximum total number of merchant sites for WCS Start is limited to one merchant site per processor. There is no limit to the number of merchant entitlements that may be purchased with WCS Pro.

A merchant site is an independent store implemented as an instance of WebSphere Commerce Suite with a unique URL and separate database, or as a store within an electronic mall sharing a URL and database with other merchants. A different language version of the same store is an additional merchant site.

Number of Processors: Each program package entitles the licensee to run WCS on one processor. In the case of a Symmetric Multiprocessor (SMP) system or node, the customer must acquire additional processor features that bring the total number of processor charges equal to the total number of processors executing all or any part of the WCS Program.

Number of Merchants: Each WCS program package entitles the licensee to one merchant site. Additional merchant features must be acquired if more than one merchant site entitlement is required.

DB2, Staging, and Backup Servers: DB2 is included with WebSphere Commerce Suite to be used exclusively with WCS. If it is used on its own hardware server then an additional license for WCS is required unless a DB2 license is purchased separately.

All WCS servers, including backup and staging servers, that use the WebSphere Commerce Suite program, require their own WCS license.

Developer and Professional Developer Editions: WebSphere Commerce Studio, Developer and Professional Developer Editions are chargeable by user only. The price of both Developer Editions include use by one user in a non-production environment. If there is more than one user, then additional licenses are required for each additional user.

WebSphere Catalog Architect: WebSphere Catalog Architect is chargeable by user only. If there is more than one user, then additional licenses are required for each additional user.
