Overview

IBM introduces 2 models, the G5 Y86 and Y96, in addition to the 15 G5 Server models announced May 7, 1998. These models exploit IBM's advanced design Modular Cooling Unit (MCU), formerly available only on the largest CMOS server. G5's model RY6 has been redesignated as model YX6; the "Y" prefix identifies IBM's "Turbo" models. These models have a faster cycle than the previously announced G5 series.

Upgrades from 9672 server models R3, G3 and G4 to the Turbo models are also announced. The Y86 and Y96 can be upgraded to the largest G5 model, the YX6. Models Y86 and Y96 have 8 GB of memory standard. All features announced on models R86 and R96, including the use of spare Processor Units (PUs) for ICFs, and additional SAPs, apply to the new models Y86 and Y96. Transparent CP/ICF/SAP sparing is standard function of the new models. IBM's MCU has a proven reliability record.

This announcement also communicates the G5 Software Model Groups and MSU values of the 17 S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server Generation 5 models announced to date. Refer to Hardware Announcement 198-115 dated May 7, 1998, for additional technical information.

IBM offers the world's most powerful S/390 (R) Server. IBM's CMOS Generation 5 Servers have the largest Central Processor (CP) engine and deliver the most powerful single image of any S/390 server available.

Performance Advantages

The performance comparisons are Internal Throughput Rate Ratios (ITRR) based on measurements and projections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actual throughput that any user will experience will vary depending upon considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming in the user's job stream, the I/O configuration, and the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can be given that an individual user will achieve throughput improvements equivalent to the performance ratios stated here. For more detailed performance information, consult the Large System Performance Reference (LSPR).

The LSPR will be available as follows:

For additional information refer to Hardware Announcement 198-115 dated May 7, 1998.
