Overview

The S/390 (R) Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON (R)) Channel PCI Adapter provides a control unit (CU) capability to interconnect RS/6000 (TM) and S/390 environments to take full advantage of the performance and connectivity characteristics of ESCON technology.

This adapter along with the PCI ESCON Control Unit Connectivity Version 2.1 (5765-D49) enhance the connection of legacy data to intranets, Internets, or extranets in support of e-business activity. Support for S/390 ESCON Multiple Image Facility (EMIF) is now provided. EMIF allows data exchange between multiple Logical Control Units in the RS/6000 and multiple Logical Hosts in the S/390.

Multiple protocols are also supported:

  • TCP/IP
  • MPC
  • SNA
  • 3088 CTC
Benefits
  • Enhances the capability and positioning of RS/6000 systems

  • Enables archival/retrieval of data

  • Provides access to "mainframe" databases

  • Delivers high reliability

  • Delivers performance advantages
The 9.1GB Ultra-SCSI 16-bit 1-inch (25-mm) High Disk Drive Select is now available on additional RS/6000 models. A 6 Foot Extender Cable for Displays (15-pin D-shell to 15-pin D-shell) is now available for "Rack" systems.

Intended Customers

The S/390 ESCON Channel PCI Adapter is intended for customers with S/390 and RS/6000 environments who want to interconnect them.

The 6 Foot Extender Cable for Displays is for Models S70, H10, and H50 system users requiring a longer cable for a display.

Key Prerequisites

S/390 ESCON Channel PCI Adapter (#2751) requires an RS/6000 with an available PCI slot, AIX (R) Version 4.3.0, or later, and PCI ESCON Control Unit Connectivity Version 2.1 (5765-D49).

DESCRIPTION

The S/390 ESCON Channel PCI Adapter (#2751) enables RS/6000 Systems to attach to IBM ESCON channels of the System/390 (R) mainframe. The S/390 ESCON Channel PCI Adapter attaches directly to an ESCON channel providing fiber optic links using LED technology, and also attaches to ESCON Directors (fiber optic switches) permitting connections to multiple channels. Host operating systems supported include VM/ESA (R), MVS/ESA (TM), and OS/390 (TM).

Note:

  • The adapter has restrictions regarding the slots in which it can be installed. Refer to the Limitations section.

  • The adapter is supported on AIX Version 4.3.0 with a separately orderable device driver, PCI ESCON Control Unit Connectivity Version 2.1 (5765-D49).

  • Control Unit Multipath definitions are not supported in IOCP or HCD.

  • The 3174 Emulation Mode is not supported. For SNA users, MPC Emulation is now supported.

  • S/390 TCP/IP support is available in:
    • IBM TCP/IP Version 3.1, or later, for VM (5735-FAL)
    • IBM TCP/IP Version 3.1, or later, for MVS (TM) (5735-HAL)
  • MPC support is available in IBM TCP/IP Open Edition Version 3.4, or later, which is shipped as part of OS/390 Version 2.5 (5647-A01) when used with VTAM (R) Version 4.4, or later (5695-117).

  • The adapter requires ESCON external cabling.

  • APAR OW3336 is recommended to be installed on OS/390 BCP.
