Overview
The S/390 (R) Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON (R)) Channel PCI Adapter provides a control unit (CU) capability to interconnect RS/6000 (TM) and S/390 environments to take full advantage of the performance and connectivity characteristics of ESCON technology.
This adapter along with the PCI ESCON Control Unit Connectivity Version 2.1 (5765-D49) enhance the connection of legacy data to intranets, Internets, or extranets in support of e-business activity. Support for S/390 ESCON Multiple Image Facility (EMIF) is now provided. EMIF allows data exchange between multiple Logical Control Units in the RS/6000 and multiple Logical Hosts in the S/390.

Intended Customers
The S/390 ESCON Channel PCI Adapter is intended for customers with S/390 and RS/6000 environments who want to interconnect them.
The 6 Foot Extender Cable for Displays is for Models S70, H10, and H50 system users requiring a longer cable for a display.
Key Prerequisites
S/390 ESCON Channel PCI Adapter (#2751) requires an RS/6000 with an available PCI slot, AIX (R) Version 4.3.0, or later, and PCI ESCON Control Unit Connectivity Version 2.1 (5765-D49).

The S/390 ESCON Channel PCI Adapter (#2751) enables RS/6000 Systems to attach to IBM ESCON channels of the System/390 (R) mainframe. The S/390 ESCON Channel PCI Adapter attaches directly to an ESCON channel providing fiber optic links using LED technology, and also attaches to ESCON Directors (fiber optic switches) permitting connections to multiple channels. Host operating systems supported include VM/ESA (R), MVS/ESA (TM), and OS/390 (TM).
Note:
- The adapter has restrictions regarding the slots in which it can
be installed. Refer to the Limitations section.
- The adapter is supported on AIX Version 4.3.0 with a separately
orderable device driver, PCI ESCON Control Unit Connectivity
Version 2.1 (5765-D49).
- Control Unit Multipath definitions are not supported in IOCP or
HCD.
- The 3174 Emulation Mode is not supported. For SNA users, MPC
Emulation is now supported.
- S/390 TCP/IP support is available in:
- IBM TCP/IP Version 3.1, or later, for VM (5735-FAL)
- IBM TCP/IP Version 3.1, or later, for MVS (TM) (5735-HAL)
- MPC support is available in IBM TCP/IP Open Edition Version 3.4,
or later, which is shipped as part of OS/390 Version 2.5
(5647-A01) when used with VTAM (R) Version 4.4, or later
(5695-117).
- The adapter requires ESCON external cabling.
- APAR OW3336 is recommended to be installed on OS/390 BCP.
- Single slot, full-length PCI adapter

- Supports 3088, CLAW (TCP/IP), and MPC (SNA and TCP/IP) Emulations
- Supports CLIO/S
- Provides the same API for user-written application programs for
CLAW and 3088 Emulations as ESCON Channel Connectivity for AIX
Version 1.1 (5765-603)
- Supports attachment to either 10 MB or 17 MB ESCON channels
- Supports ESCON Multiple Image Facility (EMIF)
- Supports a maximum distance of 43 km using a combination of LED and XDF ESCON links
The 9.1GB Ultra-SCSI 16-bit 1-inch (25-mm) High Disk Drive Select (#2904) is available on additional RS/6000 models.
Year 2000
These products do not have date dependencies and are therefore Year 2000 ready.
STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION
IBM intends to support the S/390 Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON) Channel PCI Adapter (#2751) on the RS/6000 SP (TM) 332 MHz SMP nodes by year-end 1998. All statements regarding IBM's future direction and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice.

S/390 ESCON Channel PCI Adapter

- For Model S70 of the 7013, 7015, and 7017 systems, adapters are

- For 7025-F50 and 7026-H50 systems, the number of S/390 ESCON
Channel PCI Adapters (#2751) is affected by the number of Digital
Trunk Quad Adapters (#6309) also installed. The maximum number of
either adapter in any combination is three. Slot usage
limitations are:
- Across slots 1 and 2 -- one #6309 or #2751 adapter only
- Across slots 3, 4, and 5 -- one or two adapters, either #6309
and/or #2751
- Across slots 6, 7, 8, and 9 -- one #6309 or #2751 adapter only
- Across slots 1 and 2 -- one #6309 or #2751 adapter only

These products use the security and auditability features of host hardware, software, and application software.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
