At a glance

. The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7500 solution is designed to offer tape virtualization for open systems servers connecting over Fibre Channel and iSCSI connections. The TS7500 solution consists of:

Overview

The IBM Virtualization Engine™ TS7530 Server (3954 Model CV7) is the latest generation processing engine of the TS7500 solution.

The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7500 is a virtual-tape solution designed to help improve open system backup application tape processing. Through the implementation of an integrated, tiered storage hierarchy of disk and tape, the benefits of both technologies can be leveraged to help enhance performance and provide the capacity needed for today's tape processing requirements. Deploying this innovative subsystem can help reduce batch processing time and management overhead.

The TS7500 solution utilizes IBM technology and software to emulate IBM tape libraries, drives, and media. This emulation capability is designed to help you achieve the following operational and throughput efficiencies:

  • Backup window reduction
  • Restore time reduction
  • Data sharing and resource virtualization facilitation
  • Operational efficiencies
  • Improved sharing of tape libraries across applications and servers

The TS7500 solution consists of three hardware machine types and IBM Virtualization Engine TS7500 Enterprise Edition (EE) V3R1 software.

These machine type-models are referred to as:

  • The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7530 Server (3954 Model CV7)

    The TS7530 Server is the latest generation processing engine for a TS7500 solution.

  • The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7520 Cache Controller (3955 Model SV6)

    The TS7520 Cache Controller manages the disk cache for a TS7500 solution.

  • The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7520 Cache Module (3955 Model SX6)

    The TS7520 Cache Model expands the disk cache for a TS7520 solution.

  • The IBM 3952 Tape Frame Model F05

The 3952 Tape Frame can contain (configured as a base frame or secondary base frame):

  • One or two Model CV6s or Model CV7s
  • Two Model SV6s
  • Up to six Model SX6s

The 3952 Tape Frame can contain (configured as an expansion frame):

  • One or two Model SV6s
  • Up to ten Model SX6s

The TS7500 solution supports a primary and secondary base frame, allowing the configuration of four total Virtualization Servers.

Key prerequisites

The TS7500 solution using TS7530 Servers requires a 3952 Tape Frame containing one or two TS7530 Servers, one or two TS7520 Cache Controllers, and optional TS7520 Cache Modules. A maximum number of 12 tape frames are allowed: two as base frames, ten as expansion frames. A customer-supplied management console and the TS7500 EE V3R1 software (5697-P19) are also required.

The TS7500 solution attaches to selected IBM System p™, IBM System i™, RS/6000®, RS/6000 SP™, IBM System x™, Netfinity®, IBM System z™ (Linux™ only), Sun, HP-UX, Windows® 2003, Linux, and other UNIX® and PC servers. Appropriate levels of host software are required. Refer to the Technical information section for details.

Description

The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7500 solution is designed to provide redundancy for critical hardware components and connections between components. Key functional features of the TS7500 solution:

  • Configuration of two TS7520 or two TS7530 Servers as a high-availability cluster
  • Configuration of two high-availability clusters as two cooperating active clusters with four nodes
  • Support for real-time compression of data using compression cards, reducing disk storage requirements with limited impact on TS7530 Server throughput
  • On demand allocation of disk storage to help improve storage utilization using virtual cartridges (Static allocation is also supported for customized environments.)
  • Support of import/export to an IBM TotalStorage® 3494 Tape Library using an Ethernet interface to manage the library
  • Interaction with the TS7520 Cache Controllers to perform transparent failover/failback from path (HBA, port, switch, channel) or storage controller failure to minimize disruption to backup or restore activities
  • Integration of Ethernet and Fibre Channel Switches for connectivity between base frames and expansion frames
  • Ability to scale processing and memory capacity for improved performance
  • Physical and virtual support for many key IBM Tape Libraries (Refer to the Compatibility section to view the complete list of virtually emulated and physically supported tape libraries.)
  • Physical tape export offered in two modes:
    • Backup software controlled
    • Operator initiated

The TS7530 Server provides connectivity through the following:

  • Up to twelve Fibre Channel ports per node for tape or host server attachment or up to ten Ethernet ports per node for iSCSI server attachment, Network Replication, or NDMP.
  • Any number of available Ethernet ports may be used for network replication.

The TS7500 solution is available in a single-node configuration, in a dual-node high-availability configuration, or a four-node high-availability configuration. Each TS7520 Server and TS7530 Server is a single node.

A single-node configuration supports up to:

  • 128 virtual libraries
  • 1,024 virtual tape drives
  • Up to 65,536 virtual cartridges
  • An effective data throughput rate of 1,200 MB/second
  • Ten expansion frames
  • 2,048 TB raw capacity, 1,664 TB usable with 1 TB SATA disk drives using RAID 5 formatting

A high-availability TS7500 solution is designed to provide redundancy for nodes, disks, power, and tape and host connectivity. TS7520 Servers and TS7530 Servers may not be intermixed in the same frame to form a high availability dual-node configuration. A TS7500 HA dual-node configuration can support up to:

  • 256 virtual tape libraries
  • 2,048 virtual tape drives
  • 131,072 virtual cartridges
  • An effective data throughput rate of 2,400 MB/second
  • Ten expansion frames
  • 2,048 TB raw capacity, 1,664 TB usable with 1 TB SATA disk drives using RAID 5 formatting

A high-availability four-node configuration is formed from any two valid dual-node failover server pairs. In a HA four-node configuration, a TS7500 solution can support up to:

  • 512 virtual tape libraries
  • 4,096 virtual tape drives
  • 262,144 virtual cartridges
  • An effective data throughput rate of 2,400 MB/second
  • Ten expansion frames
  • 2,176 TB raw capacity, 1,768 TB usable capacity with 1 TB SATA disk drives using RAID 5 formatting

Configured as a Base Unit frame or a Secondary Base Unit frame, the 3952 Tape Frame can contain:

  • One or two Model CV6s or one or two Model CV7s
  • Two Model SV6s
  • Up to six Model SX6s

Configured as an Expansion Unit frame, the 3952 Tape Frame can contain:

  • One or two Model SV6s
  • Up to five Model SX6s for each SV6 installed.

TS7530 Server

The TS7530 Server (3954 Model CV7) contains up to four dual-core processors to improve performance, and accelerate software-driven functions such as encryption. Every TS7500 solution configuration must contain at least one TS7530 Server (3954 Model CV7) or TS7520 Server (3954 Model CV6).

A second optional server of the same type enables the TS7500 solution to operate in a dual-node high-availability configuration. A TS7500 dual-node high-availability configuration can have more virtual cartridges, virtual volumes, and interface ports and must be ordered with a failover/failback option for redundancy. A third and fourth optional TS7500 Server enables the TS7500 solution to operate in two dual-node high-availability configurations and allows more virtual cartridges, virtual volumes, and interface ports, and must be ordered with a failover/failback option for redundancy.

Each 3954 Model CV7 can be ordered with up to 16 Fibre Channel connections. Four of the Fibre Channel ports are connected to the TS7520 Cache Controllers.

Two Fibre Channel switches can be integrated into the frame supporting up to 32 ports each. These switches are required to add additional expansion enclosures to a base frame, or a second base frame is added to the configuration.

The solution is tested with device drivers on multiple platforms. Refer to the Software requirements section for more details on specific platforms and versions supported.

Tivoli® Storage Manager and other compatible software offerings provide storage and tape management software for the TS7500 solution. Supporting software and applications must be obtained separately from IBM, IBM Business Partners, or ISVs. A list of compatible software is available from your IBM representative or visit

Management console

A management console is used for configuration, management, and service support for the TS7500 solution. This console is required by the TS7500 solution and is either supplied by the customer or optionally ordered from IBM. If a management console is ordered, it is placed as a separate order from the TS7500 solution. Product positioning

The TS7500 Virtualization Engine solution is a high-performance, high-capacity open systems virtual tape offering designed to augment the tape backup and restore process in large tape environments. The TS7500 solution is designed to aid in the tape backup and restore process by helping provide you significant operational and throughput efficiencies via tape virtualization, namely:

  • Backup window reduction
  • Restore time reduction
  • Data sharing and resource virtualization facilitation
  • Capability to allow multiple disparate backup applications to share the same physical resources
  • High availability options
  • Integrated server, disk, and tape solution for IT improvement

The TS7500 solution is a tape virtualization solution for open systems attachment over Fibre Channel or iSCSI interfaces. It can achieve significant operational efficiencies by storing the recently used data in the TS7520 disk cache. As data ages, the older data may be migrated to real tape for longer term storage. Since data can now be written to virtual tape via the disk cache, heavy daily tape drive usage can be greatly reduced. Fewer personnel may be needed to administer the backup process when it includes virtual tape.

The TS7500 solution provides connectivity through the following:

  • 4 Fibre Channel ports per node are used to connect the TS7500 server to the TS7500 disk cache in an Enterprise Edition configuration.
  • Up to 12 Fibre Channel ports per node for tape or host server attachment.
  • Up to 10 Ethernet ports per node for iSCSI server attachment, Network Replication, or NDMP.

The TS7500 solution differs from many other open systems virtual tape offerings, since it enables either direct tape attachment or parallel tape attachment. With direct tape attachment, real tape drives or libraries are physically attached to the TS7500 solution. With parallel tape attachment, tape drives or libraries are attached to the host server and data is transferred from the TS7500 solution through the host server to real tape drives or libraries that are physically attached to the host server.

The TS7500 solution can help reduce the backup window in many installations. Since robotic movement, tape load/thread, and physical tape search and rewind is eliminated in virtual tape, the effective utilization of the Fibre Channel interfaces is high. That means more tape jobs can be run to virtual tape over a single interface than to real tape. If the backup window is reduced, the time allowed for migration to real tape is increased, thus potentially reducing the number of real tape drives needed for longer term data storage.

The TS7500 solution is designed to improve business continuity by providing better restore times. By having the data in the disk cache, the TS7500 solution can help reduce restore times. With up to 4,096 virtual tape drives and up to 512 virtual tape libraries, each backup server can be allocated their own virtual resources, allowing multiple and disparate backup applications to use the same physical resources. This offers the potential for infrastructure simplification. Multiple different tape libraries and tape drives can be aggregated to one or more TS7500 solutions, helping centralize the backup resources.

The addition of the TS7500 solution into your tape backup architecture can help provide significant operational reduction as well as performance benefits.

Hardware requirements

An IBM Virtualization Engine TS7530 Server (3954 Model CV7) can be attached to IBM System p™, IBM System i™, RS/6000®, RS/6000 SP™ systems, IBM System z™ (Linux™ only), IBM System x™, Netfinity®, and non-IBM servers, workstations, and personal computers that support Fibre Channel or iSCSI interfaces.

The TS7530 Server has up to 16 Fibre Channel ports for attachment to TS7500 disk cache, host servers, or physical tape drives or libraries. The TS7530 Server also supports up to ten 1Gb Ethernet ports for console attachment, replication, and iSCSI host attachment. Up to two hardware compression cards may be installed in a TS7530 Server.

The TS7530 Server supports TS7500 Virtualization Engine solutions running TS7500 Enterprise Edition (EE) V3.1 software only (5697-P19).

The following features are available on the TS7530 Server (3954 Model CV7):

  • 1682 (Path Failover) — Enables automatic control path failover to a preconfigured redundant path without aborting the current job in progress. It also provides failover for multiple redundant paths in a SAN environment by automatically providing error recovery to retry the current operation using an alternate, preconfigured path without aborting the current job in progress. This can provide flexibility in SAN configuration, availability, and management. An associated feature is required on the TS7500 EE V3R1 software.
  • 3450 (Dual 4Gb/s FC Port Card) — Provides a fibre channel adapter card with two ports rated for transfer speeds up to 4Gb per second.
  • 3451 (Quad 1Gb/s Ethernet Port Card) — Provides a Ethernet adapter card with four ports rated for transfer speeds up to 1Gb per second.
  • 3453 (4Gb/s Quad Port FC Card) — Provides a fibre channel adapter card with four ports rated for transfer speeds up to 4Gb per second.
  • 3454 (Dual Core AMD Opteron Processor) — Provides a dual core AMD Opteron Processor card and 4 GB RAM.
  • 3455 (Data Compression Card) — Provides a data compression card for hardware-assisted compression of data received by the TS7500.
  • 6025 (25m LC/LC Fibre Cable) — Provides a 25 meter (82.5 foot) 50.0/125 micrometer short wavelength multimode fiber-optic cable with LC Duplex connectors on both ends. These Fibre Channel cables are for host server and tape library attachment. Customer supplied cables may be used. Feature #9700 must be installed if feature number 6025 is not ordered.
  • 7420 (Failover/Failback) — Enables hardware connections between two installed servers in the same 3952 Tape Frame. The servers must be the same model, either 3954 Model CV7 or 3954 Model CV6. Both servers in the failover pair must have the same installed features, except the cable features, #6025 and #9700, may be different. This feature will also enable high availability for TS7500 operations. If one server in the failover pair fails, the surviving server takes over its identity. The worldwide node names and IP addresses associated with the failed server are transferred to the surviving server. The failback occurs when the surviving server determines that the restored server has recovered and can resume its responsibilities. An associated feature is required on the TS7500 EE V3R1 software.
  • 7421 (Network Replication) — Enables the TS7500 solution to support the Network Replication function in the TS7500 EE V3R1 software. An associated feature is required on the software.
  • 7422 (Network Encryption) — Enables the TS7520 solution to support the Network Encryption function in the TS7500 EE V3R1 software. Both the local and target servers must have feature #7421 and #7422 enabled for Network Encryption to operate. An associated feature is required on the TS7500 EE V3R1 software.
  • 7423 (Network Compression) — Enables the TS7500 solution to support the Network Compression function in the TS7500 EE V3R1 software. Both the local and target servers must have feature #7421 and #7423 enabled for Network Compression to operate. An associated feature is required on the TS7500 EE V3R1 software.
  • 7425 (Hosted Backup) — Enables backup operations to be installed on the TS7500 solution eliminating the need for a dedicated backup server. An associated feature is required on the TS7500 EE V3R1 software. This feature is not compatible with Failover/Failback (#7420). A list of compatible software is available from your IBM representative or at
  • 7426 (NDMP) — Enables backup applications and NAS devices to perform backup and restore using the NDMP version 4 protocol over an IP network. With this enabled, the TS7500 solution acts as an NDMP server, centralizing management, while eliminating locally attached tape devices from each NAS device. When a backup occurs, data is moved from a NAS device directly to the virtual library. An associated feature is required on the TS7500 EE V3R1 software. This feature is not compatible with Failover/Failback (#7420). A list of compatible software is available from your IBM representative or at
  • 7427 (Secure Tape) — Enables encryption with one or more keys for data exported to physical tape and decryption when it is imported back to virtual tapes. The data on the tape cannot be read or be decrypted without using the appropriate key. An associated feature is required on the TS7500 V3R1 software.
  • 7428 (iSCSI) — Enables SCSI commands to be used over an IP network and allows hosts to connect via Ethernet instead of requiring Fiber Channel. An associated feature is required on the TS7500 EE V3R1 software.
  • 7429 (Local Replication) — Enables making a copy of a complete virtual volume in the same TS7500 server. This functions the same as network replication except the target and source servers are the same. An associated feature is required on the TS7500 EE V3R1 software.
  • 9305 (Four Node Indicator) — Indicates that this server will be installed in a four node configuration, as supported by the required TS7500 Enterprise Edition software. It must be included with both servers ordered on the primary base frame in a four node system.
  • 9307 (Enterprise Edition Preload — AAS (5697-P19)) — Directs the factory to preload TS7500 Enterprise Edition V3R1 software (5697-P19) on the TS7530 Server. A separate order is required for the TS7500 software.
  • 9326 (Plant Install in F05) — Directs this server to be installed in the factory in a new 3952 Tape Frame Model F05.
  • 9327 (Field Merge in F05) — Directs this server to be shipped to a customer location for installation into an existing 3952 Tape Frame Model F05.
  • 9700 (No Factory Cables) — Should be specified if the Fibre Channel cable feature (#6025) is not ordered, and customer supplied cables will be used.

Support for configurations with TS7500 Enterprise Edition (EE) V3.1 software

An Enterprise Edition solution with TS7530 Servers requires:

  • One Tape Frame (3952 F05) configured as a TS7500 Base Unit, feature #7317 with:
    • One #5731, Plant Install 3954 CV7, for each TS7530 Server to be installed in the frame
    • Two #5738, Plant Install 3955 SV6, to install two TS7520 Cache Controllers
    • One #1903, Dual AC Power
    • Two #1906, Ethernet Switch Kits
  • One TS7530 Server (3954 CV7) with:
    • Two #3453, 4Gb/s Quad Port FC Card
    • One #9307, Enterprise Edition Preload, to preload the TS7500 EE V3.1 software
    • One #9326, Plant Install in F05

Tape attachment

When running TS7500 EE V3.1 software, four Fibre Channel ports of the TS7530 Server are connected to the TS7500 disk cache. The remaining Fibre Channel ports may be attached to host servers or physical tape drives or libraries. Refer to the Compatibility section to view the list of physically supported Tape Libraries.

Management console

A management console is used for configuration, management, and service support for the TS7500 solution. This console is required by the TS7500 solution and is either supplied by the customer or optionally ordered from IBM. If a management console machine is ordered, it is placed as a separate order from the TS7500 solution. The minimum requirements for the management console are:

  • Hardware requirements:
    • x86 (Pentium®, or higher) microprocessor
    • 1 GB memory
    • 175 MB of disk space for Virtualization Engine for Tape Console Function and Capacity Support
    • Keyboard, mouse, and CD-ROM drive
    • Super VGA monitor with the screen resolution set to at least 800 x 600, small fonts setting, and 256 colors
    • One Ethernet port for attachment to the TS7500 management network
    • One additional Ethernet port recommended for Internet access

Replacing a CV6 Server with a CV7 Server

To remove a 3954 Model CV6 and replace it with a 3954 Model CV7, the number of Fiber Channel HBA ports and Ethernet ports must be the same. The 3954 Model CV6 is removed using feature number 4747 on the 3952 Model F05. The replacing 3954 Model CV7 is installed using feature number 5732 on the 3952 Model F05. The Model CV6 server must be running TS7500 Enterprise Edition V3 software before it can be removed and replaced by a Model CV7. Both the Model CV6 and the Model CV7 must have the same number of feature 3451, quad port Ethernet cards, installed. The specific HBA configurations supported are:

Cables

Fibre Channel cables are required to attach the TS7500 solution to various server adapters. If no host server attachment cables are to be shipped with Model CV7 from the plant, then the No Factory Cables feature (#9700) should be specified on the Model CV7. Otherwise, the following feature should be specified on the frame:

Planning information

Customer responsibilities: Physical planning is a customer responsibility. Detailed planning information is in the IBM Virtualization Engine TS7500 Introduction and Planning Guide Version 3, Release 1 (GC27-2177).

Customers are responsible for obtaining a management console (refer to the Hardware requirements section for detailed information). Customers are responsible for obtaining the appropriate adapters and cables.

You are responsible for downloading or obtaining from IBM, and installing designated machine code (microcode, basic input/output system code (called BIOS), utility programs, device drivers, and diagnostics delivered with an IBM machine) and other software updates in a timely manner from an IBM Internet Web site or from other electronic media, and following the instructions that IBM provides. You may request IBM to install machine code changes; however, you may be charged for that service.

Cable orders: Fibre Channel cables are required to attach the TS7530 Server (3954 Model CV7) to various server adapters. Refer to Cables in the Hardware requirements section for a list of cables for the attachment of the TS7530 Virtualization Engine.

Ethernet cables are required to attach the TS7530 Server (3954 Model CV7) to various server adapters when using the iSCSI protocol.

Warranty service

If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the types of warranty service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone, or electronically via an IBM Web site. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. If applicable to your product, parts considered Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) will be provided as part of the machine's standard warranty service.

Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country- and location-specific information.

On-site Service: IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well lit, and suitable for the purpose.

Service level is 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 4 hour average, same day response. Same day service level includes the installation of Tier 1 CRUs, at no additional charge.

Warranty service upgrades

During the warranty period, warranty service upgrades provide an enhanced level of On-site Service for an additional charge. Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed. Refer to the Warranty services section for additional details.

Maintenance Services

If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the types of maintenance service specified for the machine. The specified level of maintenance service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. CRU Service: If your problem can be resolved with a CRU (for example, keyboard, mouse, speaker, memory, or hard disk drive), and depending upon the maintenance service offerings in your geography, IBM will ship the CRU to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM upon your request.

Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next business day delivery. IBM specifies, in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU, whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, (1) return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU and (2) you may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement.

CRUs may be provided as part of the machine's standard maintenance service except that you may install a CRU yourself or request IBM installation, at no additional charge, under any of the On-site Service levels specified above.

The Installation and Planning Guide specifies site preparation, physical requirements and installation (operating) environment and any cabling included in the installation along with the approximate installation time in hours. Customer requests for installation of items not covered in the installation guide may be performed at IBM's hourly service rate designated for the machine.

If the machine does not function as warranted and your problem can be resolved through your application of downloadable machine code, you are responsible for downloading and installing these designated machine code changes as IBM specifies. IBM has responsibility for installing changes that IBM does not make available for you to download. If you would prefer, you may request IBM to install downloadable machine code changes; however, you may be charged for that service.
