Overview

The System i™ 570 is enhanced to enable medium and large enterprises to grow and extend their i5/OS™ business applications more affordably and with more granularity, while offering effective and scalable options for deploying Linux™ and AIX® applications on the same secure, reliable system.

New technology

The System i 570 now offers IBM's fastest POWER6™ processors in 1- to 16-way configurations, plus an array of other technology advances. It is designed to deliver outstanding price/performance, mainframe-inspired reliability and availability features, flexible capacity upgrades, and innovative virtualization technologies.

The CPW ratings for systems with POWER6 processors are approximately 70% higher than equivalent POWER5™ systems and approximately 30% higher than equivalent POWER5+™ systems. For some compute-intensive applications, the new System i 570 can deliver up to twice the performance of the original 570 with 1.65 GHz POWER5 processors.

With its advanced virtualization technologies, the System i 570 can dynamically deliver POWER6 processing capacity for multiple operating systems and application environments simultaneously, including:

New editions

Two new editions streamline your options when purchasing a POWER6 570 system: the i5/OS Edition and the Capacity BackUp (CBU) Edition.

Improved flexibility

Expanded on demand capabilities offer great flexibility and granularity. An Enterprise Enablement feature is a per-processor option on all i5/OS Edition configurations to deliver 5250 OLTP capability as required. More standby processors in initial configurations can enable you to increase or deploy new applications more rapidly and affordably. With Utility Capacity on Demand enabled, you can now achieve granularity down to a single 570 processor minute, to automatically deliver additional processor capability when a sudden workload peak occurs.

POWER6 processors

New 4.7 GHz POWER6 processors use the very latest 64-bit IBM POWER™ processor technology. Each 2-way 570 processor card contains one two-core chip (two processors) and comes with 32 MB of L3 cache and 8 MB of L2 cache.

Description

Technology enhancements to the System i model 570 include:

  • POWER6 processors at 4.7 GHz
  • PCIe slots
  • SAS disk slots
  • 12X I/O attachment
  • Buffered memory DIMMs

You order the new model 570 as a 9406-MMA to differentiate it from the earlier 9406-570 with POWER5 technology.

The i5/OS Edition of the POWER6 model 570 is available as a 1/4-way, 2/8-way, or 4/16-way system. CBU Editions offer the option of a 1/4-way, 1/8-way, or 2/16-way system. In the future, by ordering the optional 1/4-way processor enclosure MES, you can have a 12-way system (refer to the Product previews section). Zero 5250 OLTP capacity is included in the i5/OS or CBU editions, but you can add it on a per processor basis using 5250 Enterprise Enablement features.

The POWER6 model 570 ranges in CPW rating from 5500 (1-way) to 76900 (16-way). Because of the building block approach, the amount of memory, PCI slots, and disk capacity varies based on the number of processor enclosures. Each POWER6 570 can provide on demand processor and memory capability.

Editions

The POWER6 model 570 i5/OS and CBU editions offer a flexible structure for you to order systems. Each edition includes a specific number of base (no charge) processor activations, one i5/OS processor license entitlement, and other software and voucher content. Either 1, 2, or 4 processor activations are provided and are indicated by the quantity of base processor activation feature #7783. You can add 5250 OLTP capability to any i5/OS or CBU edition using 5250 Enterprise Enablement features.

  • Use i5/OS IFS as a file server
  • Access i5/OS printer output, convert it to .PDF, and print it on PC printers

Upgrades into the POWER6 model 570 i5/OS Edition are available from either Enterprise or Standard Edition systems. High Availability (HA) Edition machines should be converted to an Enterprise Edition before upgrading. Upgrades into the POWER6 570 CBU Edition are available from earlier CBU Editions.

Capacity BackUp (CBU) Edition

The POWER6 Model 570 CBU Edition gives you great flexibility in meeting your requirements for a second system to use for backup, high availability (HA), and disaster recovery (DR). The CBU Edition, offered at an attractive price, delivers special options to better meet your business continuity needs.

CBU Editions have a base number of processor activations that can give you the capacity to maintain the CBU system in readiness for a switchover from the primary system. CBU Editions include a number of inactive processors that provide capacity for role-swap operations. The CBU system maintains application availability when a production system is down for planned or unplanned outages. System i CBU Editions give you the option of permanent processor activations to support application workloads if the workload is larger than the base activations can support. You can also permanently acquire 5250 Enterprise Enablement features and i5/OS processor license entitlements for the nonbase processors on the CBU system.

With the CBU Edition you can temporarily move your i5/OS processor license entitlements and 5250 Enterprise Enablement entitlements from the primary system to the CBU system when the primary system is down or while the primary system processors are inactive. The CBU system can then support failover and role swapping for a full range of test, DR, and HA scenarios. System registration is required. Before you can temporarily transfer optional Enterprise Enablement entitlements from the primary system, the CBU must already have one 5250 Enterprise Enablement feature installed. You cannot temporarily transfer processor activations.

In this example of temporary transfer, you have a POWER5 4/8-way 570 Enterprise Edition as the primary system with six i5/OS processor license entitlements (1 base + 5 optional) and three 5250 Enterprise Enablement entitlements (1 base + 2 optional), you can temporarily transfer up to five i5/OS entitlements and up to two Enterprise Enablement entitlements. This transfer is possible because these entitlements are above the base definition of the model 570 Enterprise Edition. During this temporary transfer, the CBU system's internal records of its total number of i5/OS license entitlements is not updated, and the user may see i5/OS license warning messages from the CBU system.

Before IBM ships a new CBU Edition system or processor upgrade, you must register a primary system in the same enterprise at the System i CBU Edition Web site. Eligible primary machines are the model 570 and model 595. Before i5/OS processor entitlements or Enterprise Enablement entitlements can be temporarily moved, you must agree to terms and conditions for this capability.

If the primary or the CBU machine is sold or discontinued from use, any temporary entitlement transfers are returned to the machine on which they were originally acquired.

With a CBU Edition machine, you can activate remaining standby processors using On/Off Capacity on Demand in case of a disaster that takes down the primary system. IBM provides up to 90 no-charge processor days per processor in the event of a declared disaster. The specific quantity of processor days is based on how many permanently activated processors on the primary machine are used. On demand memory features are activated for a fee during a disaster.

On/Off Capacity on Demand includes i5/OS processor licensing entitlements and 5250 OLTP capability with each On/Off processor activation. One 5250 Enterprise Enablement feature must be installed on the POWER6 570 before On/Off activations can provide additional 5250 OLTP capacity.

"Disaster" is defined as an event that is recoverable from an off-site location only. It results from the unforeseen loss of a production server's computing ability due solely to forces beyond your control. To qualify as a disaster, such outage must clearly be one that by its nature requires a remote recovery operation. This means that the primary data center is no longer usable and that the outage is not due to a hardware or software failure.

The POWER6 570 CBU editions include an opportunity for an initial test of the switchover environment. Nine processor days are credited to your account for a 1/4-way system. Twenty-one processor days are credited to your account for a 1/8-way system. Forty-two processor days are credited to your account for the 2/16-way system. These processor days are provided at no additional charge with the On/Off Capacity on Demand function, which can be used for standby processors.

Enterprise Enablement (5250 OLTP)

You can enable your enterprise with 5250 OLTP capability using Enterprise Enablement features. One Enterprise Enablement feature #5490/9299 includes one processor's worth of 5250 OLTP capacity. You can spread the capacity across more than one processor. If you need more than one Enterprise Enablement feature, you should consider the Full Enterprise Enablement feature, #5491, which gives you unlimited 5250 entitlement for the POWER6 model 570, regardless of which n-way configuration is in place.

Capacity on Demand

Several types of Capacity on Demand are optionally available on the POWER6 model 570 to help meet changing resource requirements in an On Demand environment. Resources can be installed on the system but remain inactive until needed.

  • With Capacity Upgrade on Demand (CUoD), you purchase additional permanent processor or memory capacity and dynamically activate it when needed for a specific system.
  • On/Off Capacity on Demand enables processors or memory to be temporarily activated in full-day increments, as needed. The system administrator uses an interface at the HMC to manage activation and deactivation of resources. A monitor residing on the server logs usage activity. Charges are based on usage reporting collected monthly. You can purchase On/Off Capacity on Demand for temporary standby processors as needed. However, high usage of On/Off Capacity on Demand outside a disaster can be costly. Permanent processor activations should be considered for ongoing requirements. Before using temporary capacity on your system, you must first enable On/Off CoD by ordering an enablement feature (MES only) and signing the required contracts.   • Utility CoD automatically delivers additional processor capacity on a temporary basis within the system's Shared Processor Pool. You can place any number of inactive processors into the Shared Processor Pool. The processors become available to the pool's resource manager. When the system recognizes that the combined processor utilization within the shared pool exceeds 100% of the level of base (purchased/active) processors assigned across uncapped partitions, a Utility CoD Processor Minute is charged, and this level of performance is available for the next minute of use. If additional workload requires a higher level of performance, the system will automatically allow the additional Utility CoD processors to be used. The system automatically and continuously monitors and charges for the performance needed above the base (permanent) level. Usage is measured in processor minute increments and is reported via a Web interface. Billing is based on the reported usage.
  • Trial CoD offers a one-time, no additional charge, 30-day trial to allow you to explore the uses of inactive processor and memory capacity on your server. This function is available on all System i models that come with inactive CoD processors or memory. To request a trial period, you can get an activation code at

An HMC console is required for all forms of temporary CoD activations, including On/Off CoD, Utility CoD, and Trial CoD.

POWER6 processor enclosure

The POWER6 model 570 processor is housed in a four EIA-unit rack-optimized processor enclosure (or node). Each enclosure holds two processors cards. Each processor card has a single socket holding a dual processor POWER6 chip, or two cores. Therefore, an enclosure has four cores and is a 4-way system building block. Two enclosures is an 8-way. Four enclosures is a 16-way. A 4/16-way indicates that the offering physically ships four enclosures with 4 of the 16 processors active.

Each enclosure or node has:

  • Two processor cards (each represented by a 0/2-way processor feature)
  • Twenty-four buffered DDR2 memory slots (12 slots per processor card)
  • Six PCI slots:
    • Two PCI-X DDR2 slots
    • Three or four PCIe slots (three if a second HSL/12X GX card is used)
  • Six SAS disk slots (driven by the imbedded disk controller)
  • One slimline DVD drive slot (optionally enabled for second through fourth enclosure)
  • Imbedded controller with zero write cache for the enclosure's disk and DVD slots
  • One dedicated GX slot (for either an HSL-2/RIO-G or 12X loop)
  • One optional GX slot that fills a PCIe slot (for either an HSL-2/RIO-G or 12X loop)
  • Integrated Virtual Ethernet card with two options available at time of manufacture:
    • Option 1: four 1 Gb Ethernet ports and one serial port
    • Option 2: two 1 Gb Ethernet ports and two serial ports
  • Two HMC ports
  • One Service Interface card
  • Two USB ports for optional AIX/Linux partition usage
  • Redundant cooling
  • Redundant power, including redundant power regulators and dual power cords

You can attach I/O towers/drawers to the POWER6 model 570 using three different options. The first option is the same as for the POWER5 model 570 using HSL loops (also called RIO loops) for additional PCI and disk slots. The HSL loop can also connect to other System i and IBM System x™ systems. With the second option, you can attach I/O drawers to the POWER6 model 570 using the new POWER6-only 12X loops for additional PCI slots. With the third option, you can attach disk slots using disk-only I/O drawers via disk controllers located in PCI slots.

Memory considerations (main storage)

The POWER6 model 570 uses new technology — fully buffered DDR2 DIMMs. These DIMMs give you greater bandwidth and capacity. Each processor card has 12 memory DIMM slots. Each memory feature represents four physical DIMMs that are plugged in quads. Each processor card must have at least one memory feature. Therefore, there must be at least two memory features per processor enclosure. The requirement for at least one memory feature per processor card is independent of the number of processor activations.

POWER6 model 570 memory features must be purchased from IBM with memory activations for at least 50% of the memory feature capacity. Memory Capacity on Demand activates memory hardware only in the system serial number for which it is purchased. If memory is moved to a different system, the memory activations remain on the system for which the memory was initially ordered. These activations can be used for other memory features on the initial system. For special situations, contact IBM CoD administration about transferring memory activations between systems.

Memory DIMMs of the same MHz can be mixed on the same processor card independent of their capacity. Memory DIMMs of different MHz can be mixed on the same system or processor enclosure, but cannot be mixed on the same processor card. If different frequency memory DIMMs are used, the system will run all memory at the lowest MHz installed.

When you configure the memory in a POWER6 model 570, placing two memory features (8 DIMMs) on a single processor card gives you the maximum available memory bandwidth. Adding the third memory feature gives you additional memory capacity but does not increase memory bandwidth. But probably more importantly from a performance perspective, it may allow you to use faster MHz DIMMs by purchasing two smaller features per processor card as opposed to one large feature per processor card. You should weigh this two-feature performance advantage against the future need for additional memory.

POWER6 570 memory activation features are #5680 1 GB and #5681 256 GB Memory Activation.

The unbuffered DDR2 memory features for the POWER5+ model 570 and the DDR1 memory features for the POWER5 model 570 are not compatible with the POWER6 570 memory features.

Adding a 1/4-way processor enclosure

You can add a 1/4-way processor enclosure to an existing single/double POWER6 processor enclosure via an MES order. Examples of this MES include changing:

  • 1/4-way into a 2/8-way
  • 3/4-way into a 4/8-way
  • 2/8-way into a 4/16-way (uses two 1/4-way enclosures)
  • 5/8-way into a 7/16-way (uses two 1/4-way enclosures)

You cannot order this MES enclosure with the initial order of a new POWER6 570 or initial upgrade from a previous generation system into a POWER6 570. The POWER6 570 edition feature or server feature is not changed in this MES. Adding a single 1/4-way enclosure to an existing 2-enclosure system to create a 12-way system will be available at a future date (refer to the Product previews section).

The MES 1/4-way processor enclosure (#5801) always requires at least one chargeable processor activation (#5403) to be ordered at the same time. A minimum of two memory features must be installed in the 1/4-way processor. This memory can be sourced from the existing processor enclosures if you have enough existing memory features or you can order new memory features. The processor enclosure also requires an integrated virtual Ethernet (IVE) feature and a service interface card. Add the 1/4-way MES enclosure below the existing enclosures and cable into the front and back of the existing processor enclosures using processor fabric and service interface cables.

One #3660 processor fabric cable connects the fronts of a 2-enclosure system. One #3665 fabric cable feature, two #3664 features, and three #3660 features connect the fronts of a 4-enclosure system. Only one service interface cable is used on a system. You can specify a #5657 2-enclosure or #5660 4-enclosure service interface cable. A 3-enclosure cable is currently not available.

Use those cable features when you order the 1/4-way processor enclosure. When ordered as part of the initial i5/OS or CBU Edition, equivalent no-charge processor fabric and service interface cable features are used. Processor fabric cables #8877, #8977, and #8979 are physically identical to #3660, #3664, and #3665, respectively. Server interface cables #8847 and #8849 are physically identical to #5657 and #5660, respectively.

I/O expansion units

The POWER6 Model 570 can attach I/O in multiple ways, allowing large, flexible growth options. A new option available on the POWER6 system is a 12X loop and associated 12X I/O enclosure. This is also called a 12X channel. Many HSL loop and HSL I/O enclosures previously supported on the POWER5 systems are supported on the POWER6 model 570.

Each POWER6 570 processor enclosure can attach up to two GX adapters. An HSL-2 GX adapter #1800 allows a loop to attach up to six HSL I/O enclosures. A 12X Channel CEC GX Adapter #1802 allows a loop to attach up to four 12X I/O enclosures. Each POWER6 570 processor enclosure can have up to:

  • Two HSL-2 GX adapters
  • Two 12X GX adapters
  • One HSL-2 GX adapter and one 12X GX adapter

HSL I/O enclosures must be attached to an HSL loop. 12X I/O enclosures must be attached to a 12X loop. HSL and 12X enclosures cannot be mixed on the same loop. HSL and 12X cables are not compatible.

12X cables

12X cables can each be up to 8 meters in length. There is no restriction on combined 12X loop length, other than the number of drawers supported and the 8 meter maximum cable length. For example, if four drawers are supported on a loop, the maximum loop length would be five cables multiplied by 8 meters each, or 40 meters total. IBM offers 12X cables that are 0.6, 1.5, 3, and 8 meters long.

The 12X I/O enclosure is the #5796 12X PCI-DDR Expansion Drawer that contains six full-length PCI-X DDR high-speed slots in a space-efficient package. Two #5796 features require only 4U or 4 EIA of 19-inch rack space, each #5796 taking only half the 19-inch rack width. Up to two #5796 features can be placed in a #7314 Dual 5796 Unit Enclosure but can be cabled to different 12X loops.

Each #5796 takes one of four possible positions per 12X loop. The #5796 attaches to the 12X loop using one of two #5796 12X adapters, one for shorter distances or one for longer distances. The short run (SR) adapter #6446 can be used with 12X loops on which all units are contained in the same rack. The longer run (LR) adapter #6457 can be used for units spread across multiple racks. SR and LR adapters can be mixed on the same loop.

In the following table, Yes indicates that the 12X cable identified in that column can be used to connect the configuration identified to the left. No means it cannot be used.

* The 0.6 m 12X cable (#1829) cannot be used to connect to a processor
enclosure because of its short length.  It is intended for use between
two #5796 drawers mounted side by side in the same #7314 enclosure or to
connect between two #5796 drawers located one beneath the other in a
rack.
 
** It is possible in some limited configurations to use the 3.0 m 12X
cable (#1840) to locate #5796 drawers in adjacent racks.
The cable length requires careful management of each drawer location
within the rack.  The best choice for connecting a #5796 drawer in an
adjacent rack is the 8.0 m 12X cable (#1834).
 
*** The 12X cable (#1834) is intended for use when connecting between two
modules that are located in adjacent racks.  This cable may not be
connected to the 12X SR adapter (#6446).

The #5796 supports only smart IOAs and does not support an IOP or a card that requires an IOP. The #5796 includes redundant concurrently maintainable power and cooling. The blind swap PCI mechanism allows for PCI card servicing without removing the I/O expansion drawer.

HSL

The POWER6 model 570 supports a number of HSL I/O enclosures providing PCI-X slots and potentially disk slots. These enclosures were previously announced on POWER5 systems. The PCI slots are PCI-X slots that support IOPs, not PCI-X DDR slots. These enclosures are:

  • #0595/5095 (7 PCI-X slots and 12 SCSI disk slots)
  • #5094/5294 (14 PCI-X slots and 15-45 SCSI disk slots)
  • #5096/5296 (14 PCI-X slots and 0 disk slots)
  • #0588/5088 (14 PCI-X slots and 0 disk slots)
  • #5790 (6 PCI-X slots and 0 disk slots)

The #0588 and #5088 are withdrawn from marketing but are supported on the POWER6 570. The #5094 and #5294 are not orderable as new I/O enclosures but are supported. The #0595, #5095, #5096, #5296, and #5790 can be ordered as new HSL I/O enclosures for the POWER6 570.

All of these HSL I/O enclosures are attached to the POWER6 model 570 via HSL-2 physical ports and run over an HSL-2 interface. I/O units that were attached to earlier systems using the HSL-1 interface (#9877, #9886, #9887, #2886, #2887) must be upgraded before being attached to the POWER6 model 570. This includes the #0588/5088, which previously had supported the HSL-2 interface only with an RPQ on POWER5 and POWER5+ systems. You can order the HSL-2 interface as #6417 (MES) or #9517 (from factory with new I/O tower/drawer).

The #5786/5787 Disk Enclosure is also supported. This I/O enclosure holds up to 24 internal 15k rpm SCSI disk drives, which are run by a disk controller in a PCI slot located in the POWER6 570 processor, 12X, or HSL enclosure.

PCI Express (PCIe) adapters

PCI Express or PCIe adapter slots can support higher speeds and capacities than the PCI-X generation of PCI slots. PCIe and PCI-X slots are physically different. PCIe adapters cannot plug into a PCI-X slot and vice versa. PCIe adapters do not use an IOP.

The POWER6 model 570 processor enclosure has four PCIe slots. If you use a second GX adapter, the enclosure has only three PCIe slots. You can use blind swap cassettes to insert and remove PCI-X and PCIe cards in the POWER6 570 system unit. The PCI-X and PCIe cassettes are physically different.

The following PCIe adapters are available for System i POWER6 configurations:

  • #2893/9693 PCIe 2-Line WAN with Modem (i5/OS, Linux, AIX)
  • #2894/9694 PCIe 2-Line WAN with Modem (CIM) (i5/OS, Linux, AIX)
  • #5773 PCIe 4Gb Fibre Channel Adapter (Linux, AIX)
  • #5767 PCIe 1GB Ethernet UPT 2-Port IOA (i5/OS, Linux, AIX)
  • #5768 PCIe 1Gb Ethernet Fiber 2-Port IOA (i5/OS, Linux, AIX)

The PCIe 2-Line WAN with Modem IOA supports the use of i5/OS Operations Console — Direct Attach (commonly called Ops Console). This i5/OS console option uses a special cable #0367 attached to a user-supplied Windows workstation.

Disk storage

The POWER6 570 supports both internal (or integrated) and external disk drives. The popular internal disk drives continue to be an important aspect of overall System i reliability, performance, and manageability. All 15k rpm SCSI disk drives supported on the System i POWER5 configurations are supported on the POWER6 model 570. Also supported is the SCSI i5/OS 35 GB 10k rpm disk drive. The 35 GB, or larger, 10k and 15k rpm drives are supported in Linux and AIX partitions. These SCSI drives are supported by multiple disk controller options.

Up to six SAS 15k rpm disk drives are supported in a POWER6 model 570 processor enclosure. They are available for i5/OS in three capacities: 69.7 GB (#3676), 139.5 GB (#3677), and 283.7 GB (#3678). Available for Linux/AIX partitions owning their own disk drives are 73.4 GB (#3646), 146.8 GB (#3647), and 300 GB (#3648) drives. These drives are run by the imbedded SAS controller in the POWER6 model 570 processor enclosure. This controller does not have write cache.

As you migrate over time to SAS disk drives, SAS and SCSI drives can mirror each other, given similar capacities. The smaller capacity is used by both drives; for example, 69.7 GB to 70.56 GB.

To further reduce possible single points of failure, the POWER6 model 570 implements enhanced disk storage configuration rules. IBM configuration tools and IBM technical support personnel do not support configurations unless they can protect against possible single disk drive failure and protect disk controller write cache. Internal and integrated disk drives must be protected by either mirroring or RAID-5/RAID-6 arrays. Disk controllers with write cache must protect the cache by either mirroring the disk controller (IOA-level mirroring or higher) or using an auxiliary write cache IOA. This is true for all partitions of all types running on the System i platform, including i5/OS, AIX, and Linux.

External drives attached via Fibre Channel adapters are supported for both database and IFS. The IBM DS6000™, DS8000™ and ESS products are supported. External drives can also be attached via Ethernet LAN adapters and used by i5/OS IFS, but not the i5/OS database. The same POWER6 570 protection rules apply here as for internal and integrated disk storage. Drives must be protected against a single drive failure, and write cache must be protected.

A new RAID-5 and RAID-6 protection option for i5/OS V5R4 enables one or more disk drives to be standing by empty (hot spare). If a drive fails, the drive is automatically brought on line in place of the failed drive. This minimizes the time the array would be running unprotected. At least one standby drive per disk controller is required for the arrays being protected. This hot spare protection option does not apply to mirrored configurations. Use of this feature increases the minimum size of your RAID configuration by one disk drive. For example, a system with RAID-5 and hot spare would require at least four disk drives.

As an additional disk storage enhancement, load source drives can now be placed outside of the POWER6 570 processor enclosure. In addition to the SAN load source option, you can specify the i5/OS load source drives to be placed in an attached I/O tower/drawer. The choices include #0595/5095, #5094/5294, or #5786/5787.

IVE adapter

An IVE adapter, also called a Host Ethernet Adapter (HEA), comes with every processor enclosure, paving the way to easier virtualization of high-speed Ethernet connections. Each POWER6 model 570 processor enclosure must have an integrated I/O port adapter (#5636 or #5639). This card does not use a PCI slot. The #5636 includes two 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports and two serial ports. The #5639 has four 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports and one serial port. The IVE is installed only in the factory and must be selected when you order a POWER6 570 processor enclosure from IBM.

Each port of the IVE can be used by a different partition. In addition, the 4-port IVE can be virtualized to up to 32 MAC addresses and the 2-port IVE virtualized up to 16 MAC addresses. This virtualization enables multiple partitions to share an IVE port. It can help you greatly reduce the need for separate LAN adapters in each partition. Imbedded hardware connections within the IVE reduce software overhead associated with virtual Ethernet connections between partitions.

Reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) features

The POWER6 570 offers RAS features that continue to deliver outstanding System i application availability for mission-critical workloads. Among its world-class RAS capabilities are a sophisticated service processor, hot-plug, hot-swappable, blind-swap, and redundant components. Redundant components include:

  • Hot-plug cooling fans
  • Redundant hot-plug power supplies
  • Redundant hot-plug CPU power regulators

Each service interface card also includes a service processor, so that an 8-way, or larger, POWER6 model 570 has redundant service processor hardware componentry. The ability to maintain operational status even if the primary service processor fails is planned to be available in first quarter 2008 (refer to the Product previews section). It will be enabled by firmware. IBM Chipkill™ ECC and bit-steering memory and dynamic deallocation of system components are also provided. Features that are designed to enable more work to be processed with less operational disruption include:

  • i5/OS journaling
  • Recovery
  • Mirroring
  • RAID controllers
  • HA multisystem functionality

Processor instruction retry, specifically designed for RAS on the POWER6 processor, can help enhance application availability and improve the quality of the service. It enables the continuous monitoring of processor status with the ability to restart a processor if certain errors are detected. If required, workloads can be redirected to alternate processors, all without disruption to application execution.

Rack requirements

It is recommended that the POWER6 model 570 be installed in a new or existing 19-inch IBM rack to provide proper dimensions, mounting surfaces, power distribution, ventilation, stability, and other functional requirements. The design of the POWER6 model 570 is optimized for use in an IBM 36U or 42U rack (System i feature code #0551 or #0553). Both the front cover and the external processor fabric cables occupy space on the front left side of the rack that may not be available in racks from other companies. The rear service interface fabric cables have very little slack and may not accommodate other companies' racks, which are deeper than the #0551/0553.

Hardware Management Console (HMC)

An HMC is required for a POWER6 model 570 system. The HMC is a stand-alone, dedicated system unit that gives the systems administrator an interface for configuring and managing the resources of the server. For redundancy, you can connect two HMCs. Virtualization technologies and memory and processor Capacity on Demand features are among the leading-edge functions that the HMC controls. It also includes tools for problem determination and service support. Using the HMC, you can readjust server resources dynamically so that you can respond more readily to changes in requirements. The enhanced GUI allows for easier administration and planning of systems growth.

Product previews

System i POWER6 570 12-way processor

IBM plans to offer additional flexibility in configuring the POWER6 570 system unit by supporting upgrades from:

  • Installed single (4-way) or dual (8-way) processor enclosure to a triple (12-way) enclosure model 570
  • Installed triple enclosure to a quad (16-way) enclosure

This capability will be provided using the #5801 1/4-way processor enclosure.

System i POWER6 570 redundant service processor

IBM plans to provide redundant service processor capability to existing POWER6 processor-based systems with two or more processor enclosures. This capability is planned through a firmware upgrade, at no additional charge, in first quarter 2008. After you apply the upgrade, make the appropriate HMC connections, and reboot the system, service processor functions can maintain operational status if one of the service processors fails.

Planning information

I/O towers/drawers: IBM plans for POWER5 and POWER5+ System i models 520, 525, 550, 570, and 595 to be the last models to support the #5074/#5079 I/O towers. The #5074/#5079 I/O towers, announced in 2000, were withdrawn from marketing in 2004. The newer, faster #5094/#5294 towers replaced them. The #5094/#5294 support the newer PCI-X interface with higher performance than the #5074/#5079 PCI slots. The #5094/#5294 towers support 15k rpm drives, which are the only new disk drives IBM sells for i5/OS use. The #5094/#5294 use either the HSL-1 or faster HSL-2 interface depending on the system to which they are attached. The #5074/#5079 towers use only the slower HSL-1 interface.

Optical HSL: IBM plans for POWER5 and POWER5+ System i models 550, 570, and 595 to be the last to support optical HSL adapters or cables for the CEC or attached I/O towers. The speed of the fiber optic HSL connection for the current models is significantly slower (one-half or one-fourth respectively) than copper-based HSL-1 or HSL-2 connections today. Client use of the optical HSL connection capability is low. Those clients who still use this longer distance HSL connection option should make plans with their sales team to move from this cabling medium by the time they move to POWER6 systems.

i5/OS disk drives: IBM plans for POWER5 and POWER5+ System i models 520, 525, 550, 570, and 595 to be the last to support IBM 10k rpm 8.58 GB and 17.54 GB disk drives. These are represented by feature code #4317 or #7501 and #4318 or #7502, respectively. They are also identified as CCIN #6717 and #6718.

Although IBM plans to support all existing i5/OS 15k rpm disk drives and the i5/OS 10k rpm 35.16 GB disk drive on POWER6 System i models, it is generally recommended that clients use 15k rpm disk drives where possible for better performance. The 10k rpm 35.16 GB disk drive is represented by feature code #4319/#7501 or CCIN #6719.

PCI cards: IBM plans for System i models POWER5 and POWER5+ 520, 525, 550, 570, and 595 to be the last to support the following older PCI cards. You may want to start moving to newer PCI cards to ease the transition to future technology. These older adapters/controllers include:

Disk controllers and protection: IBM plans that the System i models 520, 525, 550, 570, and 595 based on POWER5 and POWER5+ processor technology will be the last models to support the 757 MB write cache controllers (#2757 and #2780) running RAID-5 without an auxiliary write cache IOA. POWER6 models support these large cache disk controllers only with auxiliary write cache IOA unless used in a mirrored controller configuration. This support matches the disk controller protection announced in February 2007 for the newest 1.5 GB large cache disk controllers. This removes a potential single point of failure, helping to protect against an extended outage.

In addition, the POWER6 570 has more stringent disk controller configuration rules, and even the smaller write cache disk controllers (#5703 and #5737/5776) must also have protected write cache. Because you cannot physically attach an auxiliary write cache IOA to these smaller write cache disk controllers, these controllers must be mirrored or replaced by a larger disk controller with auxiliary write cache.

Windows integration — IXS, IXA, and iSCSI: IBM plans that the System i models 520, 525, 550, 570, and 595 based on POWER5 and POWER5+ processor technology will be the last models to support the earlier versions of the Integrated xSeries® Server (IXS). The IXS is a server running Windows or Linux that is plugged into PCI slots located inside the System i CEC or I/O expansion tower/drawer. The recommended replacement option in POWER6 systems is the System i integration with BladeCenter® and System x server solution via iSCSI adapters. The IXA (1519-001/002) and only the newest IXS (#4811/4812/4813/9812/9813) will be supported with POWER6 models. Additional IXS or IXA will not be orderable on POWER6 systems.

Tape drives: IBM plans that the POWER5 and POWER5+ System i models 520, 525, 550, 570, and 595 will be the last to support the following IBM tape drives. Many of these older tape drives use media that are not compatible with newer tape drives. If newer technology save/restore drives and their media are not implemented on the existing system prior to an upgrade to POWER6 models, additional upgrade planning considerations may be required to address this incompatibility during or after an upgrade.

The following four sets of tape drives are attached to System i models 520, 525, 550, 570, and 595 using the #2749 PCI Ultra Magnetic Media Controller. Their media are not compatible with newer IBM tape drives planned to be supported on POWER6 models.

  • 9348 Magnetic Tape Unit Model 001, 002 (1/2-inch reel-to-reel)
  • 3490 Magnetic Tape Subsystem Model C10, C11, C1A, C22, C2A (with feature #5040), E01, E11, F00, F01, F11, F1A
  • 3570 Magstar® MultiPurpose Tape Subsystem Model B00, B01, B02, B11, B12, B1A, C00, C01, C11, C12, C2A
  • 3575 Magstar MultiPurpose Tape Library Model L06, L12, L18, L24, L32

The following LTO-1 tape drives have media that can be read by LTO-2/3 tape drives but may not be written by LTO-3 tape drives. These LTO-1 tape drives are not planned to be supported on POWER6 models. They are attached to current System i models using the #2749 PCI Ultra Magnetic Media Controller.

  • 3580 TotalStorage® Ultrium Tape Drive Model H11, H13, and H23
  • 3581 TotalStorage Ultrium Tape Autoloader Model H13, H17, and H23
  • 3582 TotalStorage Ultrium Tape Library with 3582 feature #8104 and #8204
  • 3583 TotalStorage Ultrium Tape Library with 3583 feature #8004 and #8104

The following older, small-capacity QIC (1/4-inch cartridge) tape drives (4, 16, and 25 GB) are not planned to be supported on POWER6 models. Their SLR5, MLR1, MLR3 media formats can be read by the current 30 GB (SLR60) or 50 GB (SLR100) QIC tape drives. Media formats older than SLR5 may or may not be read by the 30 or 50 GB tape drives.

Product positioning

The POWER6 model 570 is similar to the POWER5 and POWER5+ model 570 in many ways, including:

  • Overall 4U processor enclosure per 4-way system unit
  • Ability to scale to a 16-way 4-enclosure system
  • System unit inclusion of some PCI slots
  • Six disk slots
  • DVD drive
  • Many Capacity on Demand capabilities

However, the new POWER6 570 has many differences that offer these advantages:

  • POWER6 processors deliver a big boost in performance. The size of the improvement varies by the type and mixture of applications.
  • POWER6 processors help deliver additional reliability, especially with its new retry instruction unit, which transparently can help further reduce potential application outages.
  • Higher-speed memory, larger memory capacity, and I/O provide growth and a basis for supporting new I/O technologies such as 12X I/O drawers, PCIe adapters, and SAS I/O.
  • More flexible Utility Capacity on Demand function allows spare processor capacity to be dynamically brought online in increments as small as one processor minute.

The simpler i5/OS Edition and CBU Edition structures simplify configuration choices while maximizing client options for growth. The ability to add a processor drawer as an MES replaces the more complex edition-to-edition upgrade paths.

The imbedded POWER6 570 disk controller, which supports the new integrated SAS drives, has zero write cache. Where disk and disk controller performance is a consideration, use a SCSI disk with a SCSI disk controller with write cache. POWER6 configurations require disk controller write cache to be protected either through mirroring at an IOA level or by auxiliary write cache IOA.

If you are an existing System i client moving to the POWER6 570, there is extensive support for a large number of older I/O units, but not all. For additional information, visit

Although the POWER6 570 supports existing #5094/5294 I/O towers migrating to the POWER6 570, new #5094/5294 I/O towers cannot be ordered for the POWER6 570. The newer #5790/#5796 (PCI slots) and #5786 (disk slots) I/O drawers should generally be ordered in place of additional #5094/5294 I/O towers.

The POWER6 model 570 IVE offers much more flexibility and capability than the two imbedded Ethernet ports of the POWER5 model 570 enclosure. The two ports of the POWER5 model 570 enclosure are one controller with two ports, which cannot be owned by different partitions. Each POWER5 570 port has one MAC address. Each port of the POWER6 model 570 IVE can be owned by a different partition. In addition, the 4-port IVE can be virtualized to up to 32 MAC addresses, and the 2-port IVE can be virtualized to up to 16 MAC addresses. Because many partitions can share the same ports, this further virtualization can help you greatly reduce the need for separate LAN adapters in each partition.

12X loop technology is 50% faster than HSL-2, measuring both at peak theoretical levels. Using high-speed PCI cards such as the 10 Gb Ethernet and 1.5 GB Write Cache Disk Controllers on 12X loops can help avoid potential loop bandwidth restrictions.

Smart IOA WAN adapters can save PCI slots by reducing the need for IOPs. If you need to attach a SDLC or SNA device directly through the WAN adapter, an IOP will still be required. For additional information visit the planning Web site at

Attributes, as defined in the descriptions, state the interaction of requirements among features.

Minimums and maximums are the absolute limits for a single feature without regard to interaction with other features. The maximum valid quantity for MES orders may be different than for initial orders. The maximums in the following list refer to the largest quantity of these two possibilities.

The order type defines whether a feature is orderable only on initial orders, only on MES orders, on both initial and MES orders, or if a feature is supported on a model only as a result of a model conversion.

(#0302) — EXP24 Attach via Existing: This specify code is used to help IBM configuration tools. It is used on an EXP24 Disk Enclosure MES order to indicate that an already installed disk controller will be used to control an EXP24 6 pack or 12 pack of disk drives. Fewer disk controllers or disk controller ports are therefore required on the EXP24 MES order. The marketing configurator will determine the quantity (if any) of #0302 on a given EXP24 Disk Enclosure MES order.

The customer may alter the hot spare configuration selecting different options once the system is installed.

The disk controller and the auxiliary write cache IOA are connected by a SCSI cable (provided).

The connecting SCSI cable is attached to port four of the disk controller, reducing the number of SCSI buses that support disk drives from four to three. The reduction of SCSI buses may also reduce the number of disk drives supported by the disk controller, depending on the system unit or I/O unit/drawer/tower in which the disk controller is installed. No disk drives are driven by the auxiliary write cache IOA.

#0649 can support operating system-based or application-based mirroring protection or support controller-based RAID-5 or RAID-6. Concurrent battery maintenance is supported. The controller also supports internal tape units, CD-ROM units, and DVD units. #0649 has four internal u320 SCSI buses.

Port 0 is the modem port and supports V.92 56K Async PPP, V.92 data modem, V.44 data compression, V.34 FAX modem and FAX functions, such as ECM and 2D/1D conversion. Port 0 does not provide Sync modem capabilities (SDLC and Sync PPP).

Port 1 is the RVX port and supports multiple communications protocols, including synchronous operations.

Security, auditability, and control

System i uses the security and auditability features of IBM i5/OS. Use of these facilities is optional. The security measures supplied by i5/OS are designed to reduce the risk of users changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The i5/OS security features include the use of passwords, a security option to limit a user to only functions provided by customer-designed menus, and a security option to limit read/write access for files, libraries, and folders during normal operations. To achieve increased security, the i5/OS controls should be combined with physical security, division of duties, and other appropriate measures.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.

IBM Global Financing: Yes

Warranty period: One year

Warranty service: If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the type of warranty service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone, or electronically via an IBM Web site. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability.

Service levels are response time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country- and location-specific information.

Customer replaceable unit (CRU) service: If your problem can be resolved with a CRU (for example, keyboard, mouse, speaker, memory, hard disk drive and other easily replaceable parts), IBM will ship these parts to you for replacement by you. If IBM instructs you to return the replaced CRU, you are responsible for returning it to IBM in accordance with IBM's instructions. If you do not return the defective CRU, if IBM so instructs, within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement CRU, IBM may charge you for the replacement.

On-site service: IBM On-site Repair (IOR), 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, same-day response. IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose.

Usage plan machine: No

IBM hourly service rate classification: Two

When a type of service involves the exchange of a machine part, the replacement may not be new, but will be in good working order.
