| Description |
The IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Controller Model C06 is a follow-on to the highly successful IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller 3592 Model J70. It is designed for System z environments that require a high-performance tape solution. These environments include:
- High-speed data save operations where backup windows are critical, and large amounts of data are archived to tape.
- Large-scale automated tape environments where performance and reliability are required. These are primarily half-inch tape drive environments.
- Large-scale mass data archive applications where massive amounts of data need to be quickly saved to tape for storage and later recall. Examples include the seismic industry, data warehousing, and record management applications.
The TS1120 Tape Controller is designed to help address the growing needs of both new and existing IBM tape customers across a wide range of environments. Advantages of the 3592 Model J1A or E05 Tape Drives with the TS1120 Tape Controller compared to previous IBM tape offerings include:
- Higher performance, which can help reduce the number of tape drives required
- Larger capacity, to help you reduce the number of cartridges required and floor space needed
- High reliability, to help you improve operations
FICON attachment
The new TS1120 Tape Controller supports up to four 4-Gbps FICON attachments, twice the capability of the 3592 Model J70 Controller. The FICON maximum channel link speed of up to 200 MB/sec full duplex versus 17 MB/sec simplex for ESCON can help support increased tape performance. The TS1120 Tape Controller is designed to be directly attached to host systems up to 10 kilometers away, or up to 100 kilometers with a FICON/FC switch with appropriate repeaters. The TS1120 Tape Controller with the TS1120 Tape Drive is designed to provide up to 1.7 times the throughput of the 3592 Model J70 Controller with the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive. The TS1120 Tape Controller with the TS1120 Tape Drive is designed to provide up to 1.4 times the throughput of the 3592 Model J70 Controller with the TS1120 Tape Drive.
In order to exploit the improved performance of the TS1120 Tape Controller and Tape Drive, there must be a 4-Gbps Fibre Channel infrastructure. This includes 4-Gbps FICON adapters on the TS1120 Tape Controller, and drive attachment via the 4-Gbps Fibre Channel Switch feature, as well as 4-Gbps capability on the zSeries server and/or Fibre Channel Director.
ESCON attachment
The TS1120 Tape Controller can support up to eight ESCON attachments, available by ordering up to four dual-ported ESCON adapters. The TS1120 Tape Controller can be directly attached to ESCON channels on a System z9, zSeries, or S/390 server, or to an ESCON director.
ESCON and FICON intermix
The TS1120 Tape Controller can intermix ESCON and FICON attachments on the same controller in the following maximum combinations:
- Four FICON and zero ESCON attachments
- Three FICON and two ESCON attachments
- Two FICON and four ESCON attachments
- One FICON and six ESCON attachments
- No FICON and eight ESCON attachments
Drive attachment
The TS1120 Tape Controller must be ordered with two dual-ported Fibre Channel adapters. Up to four 3592 Tape Drives may be directly attached to the TS1120 Tape Controller. Attaching more than four 3592 Tape Drives to the TS1120 Tape Controller requires the use of a Fibre Channel switch. The switch may be ordered as a feature on the controller or the customer may supply your own switch. Refer to Technical information for more specific switch requirements.
TS1120 Emulation Mode Support
The TS1120 Tape Drive (3592 Model E05) now supports a new function called Static Emulation Mode. This function allows the 3592 Model E05 drives to be set in a mode to emulate the interface and format behaviors of the previous generation 3592 Model J1A drives. When Static Emulation mode is activated, the 3592 Model E05 drive reports that it is a 3592 Model J1A drive in inquiry data, and will only write and read 3592 data and WORM cartridges in the older 300 GB Model J1A data format (EFMT1) rather then the new 500 GB Model E05 data format (EFMT2). In this mode, cartridges written by the 3592 E05 drives are fully interchange compatible with older 3592 Model J1A drives with no format selection controls required. This mode may be useful for customers who purchase the newer 3592 Model E05 drives, but cannot upgrade software levels or other aspects of their system to support the new drives or data format at the present time. Order feature number 0500, Drive Microcode Update, on the 3592 Model E05 to schedule the IBM Customer Engineer setup activity whenever the Static Emulation Mode is to be changed after initial installation.
Capacity scaling
The 3592 Tape Drive attached to a TS1120 Tape Controller is designed to allow an application to issue a command to scale an individual tape cartridge to 20% of its possible capacity. The effect of capacity scaling is to potentially reduce the average locate time to a random record (from load point) to as little as 30% of the normal locate time.
For details on the application performance and capacity enhancements, including capacity scaling, refer to the IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Drive and Controller Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0555).
Note: The actual throughput a customer may achieve is a function of many components, such as system processor, disk data rate, data block size, data compressibility, I/O attachments, SAN, and the system or application software being used. Although the TS1120 Tape Drive is capable of up to a 100 MB/sec native data rate, other components may limit the actual effective data rate.
TS3000 System Console
The TS3000 System Console is designed to provide enhanced remote support to improve availability.
The TS3000 System Console can remotely monitor each attached device to determine if it is working
properly and report any error alerts for early detection of problems. Use of the TS3000 may
expedite microcode updates, reduce service times, and enhance local service. Feature number 2720,
TS3000 System Console, replaces feature number 2713, Master Console for Service. For a
rack-mountable console facility, feature number 2721, TS3000 System Console, replaces feature number
2718, Master Console for Service. Feature number 2714, Console Expansion and feature number 2715,
Console Attachment, provide the same functions with the TS3000 System Console that were provided
with the Master Console for Service.

If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the types of maintenance service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone or electronically, via an IBM Web site. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. Service levels are response time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of maintenance service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country- and location-specific information. The following service selections are available as maintenance options for your machine type.
On-site Service: IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well lit, and suitable for the purpose.
- 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 4-hour average response
- 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 2-hour average response
Customer Replaceable Units: If your problem can be resolved with a CRU (for example, keyboard, mouse, speaker, memory, or hard disk drive), and depending upon the maintenance service offerings in your geography, IBM will ship the CRU to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM upon your request.
Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next business day delivery. IBM specifies, in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU, whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, (1) return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU and (2) you may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 30 days of your receipt of the replacement.
CRUs may be provided as part of the machine's standard maintenance service except that you may install a CRU yourself or request IBM installation, at no additional charge, under any of the On-site Service levels specified above.
Non-IBM parts support: Under certain conditions, IBM repairs selected non-IBM parts at no additional charge for machines that are covered under warranty service upgrades or maintenance services.
IBM Service provides hardware problem determination on non-IBM parts (for example, adapter cards, PCMCIA cards, disk drives, memory) installed within IBM machines covered under warranty service upgrades or maintenance services and provides the labor to replace the failing parts at no additional charge.
If IBM has a Technical Service Agreement with the manufacturer of the failing part, or if the failing part is an accommodations part (a part with an IBM FRU label), IBM may also source and replace the failing part at no additional charge. For all other non-IBM parts, customers are responsible for sourcing the parts. Installation labor is provided at no additional charge, if the machine is covered under a warranty service upgrade or a maintenance service.
Usage plan machine: No
IBM hourly service rate classification: Three
When a type of service involves the exchange of a machine part, the replacement may not be new, but will be in good working order.

Machine installation: Installation is performed by IBM. IBM will install the machine in accordance with the IBM installation procedures for the machine. In the United States, contact IBM at 800-IBM-SERV (426-7878). In other countries contact the local IBM office.
Detailed physical planning information for the TS1120 Tape Controller is in the IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Drive and Controller Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0555).
