| Planned availability dates |
- March 17, 2006, except for support for fewer than 14 drives in an expansion unit, SnapManager for Exchange, and Single Mailbox Recovery
- April 7, 2006, for fewer than 14 drives in expansion units

|
|
| Description |
The N5500 filers now support attachment of EXN1000 and EXN2000 expansion units with configurations of fewer than 14 disk drives. The initial order for an N5500 and any expansion unit must include no more than two drive types (rotational speed, capacity, and drive interface [FC or SATA]) to be attached to the N5500 filer. Additional drive types may be added later, to an installed N5500 system, resulting in more than two types on the system.
All of the licensed functions necessary to support the Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) on HP-UX and Solaris are also now supported for the N5500. These include SnapDrive for HP-UX and Solaris. All necessary host attach kits for these platforms are also available.
Other licensed functions for the N5500, now available, include Disk Sanitization, SnapManager for SQL, SnapManager for Exchange, and Single Mailbox Recovery (SMBR).
Disk Sanitization is a no-cost, licensed solution that is designed to allow physical removal of all data on one, or more, physical disk drives in a manner that prevents recovery of that data by known recovery methods.
SnapManager for SQL is designed to help reduce backup and restore times of SQL databases by using backups based upon snapshot copies. It is designed to allow simultaneous backup of multiple databases and using minimal disk space for each additional full backup.
SnapManager for Exchange is designed to help streamline storage management while simplifying configuration, backup, and restore operations for Microsoft Exchange databases.
Single Mailbox Recovery is designed to work with SnapManager for Exchange, and restore individual mail items from any recent (hourly, daily, or weekly) snapshot. This helps allow rapid search of archived snapshot copies of previously deleted messages that are no longer in the current mailbox. Single Mailbox Recovery also includes Extract Wizards for Microsoft NT Backup, VERITAS Backup Exec, and, optionally, Extract Wizards for CA BrightStor ARCserve, Legato NetWorker, and VERITAS Net Backup. The Extract Wizards are designed to restore both private and public exchange information and stored data from tape or disk backups to any alternate location (machine, volume, or folder), thereby helping eliminate the need for a recovery server.
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act
The IBM System Storage N5500 is capable, as of March 17, 2006, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be requested via IBM's Web site at

Configuration indicators
Feature numbers 9557, 9558, and 9559 must be specified to verify that sufficient Fibre Channel ports (and sufficient FC HBA for Disk, Dual-port adapters, #1004) are included in the initial order for an N5500 filer.
For an N5500 Model A10, the maximum number of feature number 9557 that may be specified is four and the total of feature numbers 9558 and 9559 may not exceed four.
For an N5500 Model A20, the maximum number of feature number 9557 that may be specified is eight and the total of feature numbers 9558 and 9559 may not exceed eight.
(#9557) Number of FC Target Ports: This no-charge feature specifies the number of onboard Fibre Channel ports that are to be configured as FCP target ports. FCP target ports are used for Fibre Channel attachment of the N5500 to application servers (containing Fibre Channel HBAs) or to Fibre Channel SANs.
This feature is only relevant if you intend to use the Fibre Channel Protocol feature on the N5500. For an N5500 Model A10, valid choices are 0, 2, and 4. For a Model A20, valid choices are 0, 4, and 8.
(#9558) Number of FC Storage Loops: This no-charge feature specifies, on the initial order of an N5500 filer, the number of dual-path Fibre Channel storage loops that are to be configured for the attachment of EXN2000 storage expansion units. The EXN2000 expansion units, included in the initial order, will be distributed across the specified number of storage loops.
(#9559) Number of SATA Storage Loops:
This no-charge feature specifies, on the initial order of an N5500
filer, the number of dual-path Fibre Channel storage loops that are to be
configured for the attachment of EXN1000 SATA storage expansion units.
The EXN1000 expansion units, included in the initial order, will be
distributed across the specified number of storage loops.

Current license terms for the machine code provided with this product prohibit transfer of the machine code without approval from Network Appliance.
Licensed functions
The following licensed function is required on the N5500: DataONTAP (#7400 or #7450)
Licensed functions require the selection of N5500 Model A10 or A20 features and the acquisition of the corresponding IBM 2870 Model 651 or 652 function authorization features.
Software requirements
Current information on servers, operating systems, host adapters, and connectivity products supported by the N5500 is available at
Limitations
- The N5500 is supported only in rack installations.
-
This product is functional with the IBM

Planning information
Customer responsibilities: In order to follow good safety practice, IBM recommends that two or more persons install this product.
Physical configuration and installation planning for the 2865 is a customer responsibility. Information about physical configuration and installation requirements, including equipment, site, and power requirements, can be found in the Installation and Setup Instructions for the IBM TotalStorage® N5500 (GA32-0517).
A customer-supplied Ethernet cable is required to connect the machine to a server or Ethernet network.
Cable orders: Fibre Channel cables are required to connect an expansion unit to a 2865 system. Cables can be purchased using expansion unit features.
For the two-node Model A20, cables are required to connect the nodes.
Installability: Estimated time to unpack an IBM System Storage N5500, install it in the rack, and perform a simple discovery and configuration is one hour.
