Overview

The IBM TotalStorage® SAN Volume Controller Storage Engine, the hardware component of the IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller, is a member of the IBM Virtualization Family of solutions. The components of the SAN Volume Controller include highly specialized software, control engines, installed in pairs, a master console, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs).

  • The SAN Volume Controller combines servers into a cluster designed to support high availability. Each of the servers in the cluster is populated with 8 GB of high-speed memory that serves as the cluster cache. The SVC Storage Engines are always installed in pairs for redundancy.
  • The uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is designed to help protect against data loss resulting from a loss of electrical power.
  • A separate server is the master console for Virtualization Engine™ management. The master console software is preloaded on the master console and provides the user interface to the SAN Volume Controller. A software version of the master console, which can be loaded onto a server meeting minimum configuration specifications, is available as an option. The master console can, using VPN, provide a Remote Support interface. This can help reduce the requirement for on-site support.

Description

The IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller solution incorporates highly specialized software, control engines (SVC Storage Engines) installed in pairs, a master console, and UPSs. The SAN Volume Controller hardware configuration consists of a cluster of IBM 2145 servers, called SVC Storage Engines. Each SVC Storage Engine is a node; two nodes make up a node pair (I/O Group), and up to four I/O Groups constitute a SAN Volume Controller cluster. The cluster is scalable from one to four node pairs (I/O Groups), and supported by dual read/write cache. This design is intended to avoid single points of failure, and support concurrent maintenance.

IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller Storage Engine: The SVC Storage Engine (2145 Model 8F2) has an 8-GB cache; the Model 4F2 had a 4-GB cache. This enhancement is intended to provide better performance and throughput.

The 2145 Model 8F2 may be added in pairs to an existing cluster of Model 4F2 engines. Models 8F2 and 4F2 may not be paired.

One UPS — single (#8115) must also be ordered for each SVC Storage Engine. For more details, refer to the replacements information, below.

The SVC Storage Engine is shipped with preloaded SVC Storage Software (ordered separately). The SAN Volume Controller hardware will not ship without a companion order for the software. For a description of the software and ordering procedures, refer to Software Announcement 205-268 , dated October 25, 2005.

The storage engines must be installed in pairs to provide load sharing and failover protection. Four optical fiber cables are required by each engine in the cluster for connection to the Fibre Channel Switches in the SAN. If the master console (#4001) is included in the initial SVC Storage Engine order, two additional optical fiber cables are required. These cables are not provided as part of the engine, but may be ordered by feature number.

Each SVC Storage Engine has an Ethernet port for connection via Ethernet LAN to the master console, which provides configuration and error reporting. These connections need to be aggregated together through an Ethernet hub or switch. The Ethernet hub or switch and cabling are not included as part of the SAN Volume Controller.

SVC Storage Engine nodes may be purchased and installed as replacements for Model 4F2 nodes in an existing cluster. If you wish to have the new nodes replace existing nodes in an existing configuration, feature number 3905 must be ordered for one, and only one, of the replacement nodes that are being ordered. Feature number 3905 directs the CE to remove the old nodes from the existing rack. The SVC Storage Engine is not supported by the old UPS (#8100); one UPS — single (#8115) must be ordered for each replacement SVC Storage Engine. This is true even if the existing cluster has additional UPS capacity, that is, if the existing cluster has two or six nodes, powered by the original UPS (#8100), there is unused UPS capacity to add Model 4F2 nodes without requiring additional UPS. However, since feature #8100 will not support SVC Storage Engine nodes, they will require the UPS — single (#8115).

Master Console (#4001 or #4002)

The master console is used as a platform for all the configuration, management, and service software required to manage the SAN Volume Controller. The hardware feature (#4001) is a rack-mounted server that includes a keyboard and monitor. The master console, monitor, and keyboard (#4001) occupy a 2U space in the rack. Its preloaded software provides the following functions:

  • SNMP Trap management
  • "Call Home" capability
  • "Remote Service" capability via Virtual Private Network (VPN)
  • Browser support for FC switches
  • SAN Volume Controller CLI support for configuration
  • SAN Volume Controller configuration using the SAN Volume Controller Console
  • SAN Topology rendering using Tivoli® SAN Manager

The Master Console — Software (#4002) provides the same function, but is a software-only alternative feature and must be installed on equivalent customer-provided hardware that meets minimum requirements.

The master console includes IBM and non-IBM Licensed Machine Code. Use is subject to the terms of the applicable licenses.

The master console is ordered as a feature of the first SVC Storage Engine of the IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller. It is required for each SAN containing IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controllers. Additional or subsequent SAN Volume Controllers, within a SAN, can share the master console.

A power cord to connect the master console to a standard Power Distribution Unit (PDU) (for #4001 only) ships standard with the master console. If the master console will not be installed in a rack with a PDU, a country-specific power cord must be ordered with feature number 4001 to connect to an alternate power source.

License Information for programs furnished with the Master Console (#4001 or #4002) is shipped with the master console.

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS): In the event of a power failure, the UPS is designed to provide temporary power to allow the SVC Storage Engine to proactively begin node shut down. Shut down includes saving the contents of the cache and cluster information to the internal disk drives of each node.

The UPS monitors the condition of its battery to enable planned maintenance actions to be performed. Each UPS provides an independent source of power to the node to which it is connected. It must not be used for any other purpose.

The UPS — single feature (#8115) provides one UPS for one SVC Storage Engine of the SAN Volume Controller cluster. UPS — single (#8115) requires SVC Storage Software V3, or later. For orders of a new cluster (includes an initial engine, #3001) running SVC Storage Software V2, or later, placed after October 25, 2005, one UPS — single (#8115) must be ordered for each engine of a cluster, both for the initial engine (#3001) and for additional engines (#3002).

Each UPS — single (#8115) requires a 220 V, 10 amp power source; the UPS — single (#8115) is protected by its own 10 amp circuit breaker. UPSs of a node pair (I/O group) should be connected to separate circuits to provide added redundancy.

Power cords to connect the UPS to a standard PDU ships standard with the UPS. Country-specific power cords to connect to an alternate power source must also be ordered with the UPS.

This feature is both plant and field installed.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

The following features support use by people with disabilities:

  • Controls and latches are operable with one hand and minimal dexterity.
  • The keys on the panel are tactilely discernible without activating them.

SVC Storage Engine Feature Descriptions

Code Preload

Storage Engine Preload (#0010): This feature provides the required IBM TotalStorage® SAN Volume Controller Storage Software that must be preloaded by IBM on the SVC Storage Engine. It must be included with each SVC Storage Engine ordered. This feature is plant installed only.

Storage Engine Preload Passport Advantage® (#0017): Specifies that the software order be fulfilled via Passport Advantage. This feature must be included in the order for the first SVC Storage Engine ordered for a cluster (#3001), unless the software order is to be fulfilled via AAS (#0018). The order for SVC Storage Software V3.1 must be placed separately via Passport Advantage. This feature is plant-installed only and is mutually exclusive of feature numbers 0018 and 0019.

Storage Engine Preload AAS (#0018): Specifies that the software order be fulfilled via AAS. This feature must be included in the order for the first SVC Storage Engine ordered for a cluster (#3001), unless the software order is to be fulfilled via Passport Advantage (#0017). The order for SVC Storage Software V3.1 must be placed separately via AAS. This feature is plant-installed only and is mutually exclusive of feature numbers 0017 and 0019.

Site secondary cluster (#0019): This feature is for administrative purposes only and specifies that the order for a new cluster is not for the first cluster to be installed at the customer site; it specifies that this is for a subsequent cluster to be installed at the same site. Specifying feature #0019 will verify that no software is to be ordered, that is, that a software license is already in effect for a cluster installed at the customer site. This feature is plant-installed only and is mutually exclusive of feature numbers 0017 and 0018.

Engines

Initial Storage Engine (#3001): Feature number 3001 is used to indicate the first SVC Storage Engine of a new SAN Volume Controller cluster. It must be included for one, and only one, SVC Storage Engine in a new cluster order. An order for the SVC Storage Software V3.1 (5639-VC3) must be placed when feature number 3001 is ordered. This feature also provides the publications and CD-ROMs included with the first SVC Storage Engine in the cluster. This feature is plant installed only.

Additional Storage Engine (# 3002): Feature number 3002 is used to indicate all additional SVC Storage Engines of a SAN Volume Controller cluster and for all SVC Storage Engines to be added to an existing (already installed) SAN Volume Controller cluster. When ordered as part of a new cluster, the number must be an odd number (1, 3, 5, or 7); when ordered to add to an existing cluster, the number must be even (2, 4, or 6). This feature is plant installed only.

SVC engine removal: Feature number 3905 indicates that the engines being ordered are to replace 2145 Model 4F2 engines, already installed in a rack, and that an IBM Customer Engineer is to remove the Model 4F2s from the rack.

Master Console (#4001): Feature number 4001 provides the master console for a SAN Volume Controller. The master console is an optional feature but must be included in an order for the initial (first) SVC Storage Engine of the first SAN Volume Controller installed in a SAN. A SAN may have multiple SAN Volume Controllers installed and "managed" by just one master console.

This feature includes IBM and non-IBM Licensed Machine Code. Use is subject to the terms of the applicable licenses.

Each master console includes a power (line) cord that will allow connection to a rack PDU. An optional country-specific power cord, specified by feature number, may also be ordered with the initial SVC Storage Engine order if a PDU is not used.

This feature is both plant and field installable.

Master Console — Software (#4002): Provides a master console software CD kit. This feature provides the software to manage the cluster; it is the equivalent of the software preloaded on feature number 4001. If this feature is selected, a customer-supplied equivalent server with the following characteristics must be provided.

  • Hardware
    • One Pentium™ 4 processor, minimum 2.6 GHz
    • Minimum of 2 GB of system memory
    • Two IDE hard disk drives, minimum 40 GB each

      • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Edition with Service Pack 4, or later
      • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
      • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

Fiber optic cables are required to connect the master console to the cluster.

Cables

1 m Fiber Optic Cable LC-LC (#5301): This feature provides one 1-meter, fiber optic cable with LC connectors on each end. Four of this feature may be ordered with each SVC Storage Engine. If feature number 4001 (master console) is included in the order for the SVC Storage Engine, the maximum number that may be ordered is six. This feature is both plant and field installable.

5 m Fiber Optic Cable LC-LC (#5305): This feature provides one 5-meter, fiber optic cable with LC connectors on each end. Four of this feature may be ordered with each SVC Storage Engine. If feature number 4001 (master console) is included in the order for the SVC Storage Engine, the maximum number that may be ordered is six. This feature is both plant and field installable.

25 m Fiber Opt Cable LC-LC (#5325): This feature provides one 25-meter, fiber optic cable with LC connectors on each end. Four of this feature may be ordered with each SVC Storage Engine. If feature number 4001 (master console) is included in the order for the SVC Storage Engine, the maximum number that may be ordered is six. This feature is both plant and field installable.

LC-SC FC Adapter Cable (#5702): Feature number 5702 provides an adapter that allows an LC connector to be connected to an SC port. Four of this feature may be ordered with each SVC Storage Engine. If feature number 4001 (master console) is included in the order for the SVC Storage Engine, the maximum number that may be ordered is six. This feature is both plant and field installable.

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS): In the event of a power failure, the UPS can provide temporary power while the contents of the SAN Volume Controller cache and cluster information is written to the internal disk drives of each node of the SAN Volume Controller.

For orders of a new SAN Volume Controller cluster (includes an initial engine, #3001) running SVC Storage Software V3, or later, placed after October 25, 2005, one UPS — single (#8115) must be ordered for each engine of the cluster, both for the initial engine (#3001) and for additional engines (#3002).

Each UPS — single (#8115) requires a 220 V, 10 amp power source; the UPS — single (#8115) is protected by its own 10 amp circuit breaker. UPSs of a node pair (I/O group) should be connected to separate circuits to provide added redundancy.

This feature may be mixed with UPS feature number 8100 in a SAN Volume Controller configuration only for configurations running SVC Storage Software V3, or later. For configurations running SVC Software V1, UPS feature number 8100 must be used; V1 does not support feature number 8115.

For clusters of two or six engines, the use of UPS — single (#8115) may result in a lower price solution. UPS feature number 8100 supported up to four nodes.

Power cords to connect the UPS to a standard PDU ships standard with the UPS. Country-specific power cords to connect to an alternate power source must also be ordered with the UPS.

This feature is plant-installed only.

Every SAN Volume Controller must be connected via Ethernet to a master console. Multiple clusters can be managed by a single master console. Therefore, at least the first cluster installed in a SAN must include a Master Console (#4001 or 4002).

Fibre Channel and Ethernet cabling is not included as part of the hardware provided by IBM. These are the responsibility of the customer. Each SVC Storage Engine requires four fiber optic cables. If a master console is included in the order for the initial SVC Storage Engine, two additional fiber optic cables are required. Fiber optic cables may be optionally ordered with the SVC Storage Engines by feature number.

Software requirements

The SVC Storage Engines require that SVC Storage Software V3.1 (5639-VC3), or later, be ordered at the same time the initial order for the engines of a cluster is placed.

The software can be ordered via the AAS ordering system or the Passport Advantage system. The appropriate hardware feature (#0017 for Passport Advantage, #0018 for AAS) must be included in the hardware order for the initial engine to be installed at a customer location, that indicates the desired fulfillment system. For subsequent clusters for the same customer location, feature number 0019 should be indicated on the order. Only one software order and license is required for each customer location.

For additional details, refer to Software Announcement 205-268 , dated October 25, 2005.

Master Console — Software (#4002) requirements:

This feature requires a customer-supplied server operating with the following software:

  • Antivirus software (not required, but strongly recommended)
  • Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer with the most recent Service Pack
  • Microsoft Windows operating system
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Edition with Service Pack 4, or later
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

Limitations: The IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller is designed to support up to 2 petabytes (PB) of storage. The maximum number of SVC Storage Engines supported in a SAN Volume Controller cluster is eight.

IBM Tivoli® Bonus Kit for SAN Management V1.3 Bonus Kit is included, on CD-ROM, as part of the SAN Volume Controller ship group. Support for 64 ports is provided with the base SAN Volume Controller. Support for more ports can be obtained by contacting IBM Tivoli Software and licensing IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Fabric V2.3.

For limitations of the IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller, imposed by the SVC Storage Software, refer to Software Announcement 205-268 , dated October 25, 2005.

Additional limitations and configuration guidelines may apply, as documented in the master console README file, furnished publications for this product, and/or as listed under Configuration Requirements and Guidelines at

Planning information

Customer responsibilities: One 220 V power source is required for each UPS feature. Use of separate, independent circuits for the power sources for each node of a node pair is recommended to enhance redundancy within the system.

Cable orders

Four fiber optic cables are required to connect the SAN to each SVC Storage Engine. If a master console is included in the order for the initial SVC Storage Engine, two additional fiber optic cables are required. These cables are not included with the machines (engines). They may optionally be ordered with the engines in the following lengths:

  • Feature 5301 — 1 m Fiber Optic Cable LC-LC
  • Feature 5305 — 5 m Fiber Optic Cable LC-LC
  • Feature 5325 — 25 m Fiber Opt Cable LC-LC

Additionally, if required by connection to the Fibre Channel, an LC-SC FC Adapter cable may be ordered (feature 5702).
