| Description |
The TS7510 consists of three hardware machine types and the IBM Virtualization Engine TS7510 Software Version 1 Release 1 program 5639-CC7.
The TS7510 Virtualization Engine is available in a single-node configuration, with one TS7510 server, or in a dual-node high-availability (HA) configuration with two TS7510 servers. A single-node configuration supports:
- Up to 64 virtual libraries (3584 Emulation)
- Up to 512 virtual tape drives (LTO2/LTO3/3592 Model J1A)
- Up to 4,096 virtual cartridges
- 3494 and 3584 Tape Libraries (physically attached)
- IBM LTO2/LTO3 and 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives (physically attached)
- Four Fibre Channel ports per node for tape or host server attachment
In a dual-node configuration, a TS7510 can support up to:
- 128 virtual tape libraries
- 1,024 virtual tape drives (LTO2/LTO3/3592 Model J1A)
- 8,192 virtual cartridges
A HA TS7510 configuration, with two TS7510 servers and dual AC power on the 3952 Tape Frame, is designed to provide redundancy for nodes, disks, power, and tape/host connectivity.
The 3952 Tape Frame Model F05, is an independent frame used to house the other components of the TS7510. One or two 3952 Tape Frames Model F05 can be attached in a TS7510 configuration. The base unit 3952 Tape Frame Model F05 can accommodate:
-
One or two TS7510 Virtualization Engine (3954 Model CV5) servers.
- A single TS7510 Virtualization Engine supports up to 28 TB of raw capacity (23 TB of useable capacity).
- Two TS7510 Virtualization Engines may be configured in a dual-node configuration for twice the capacity, virtual drives, and virtual volumes. This configuration supports up to 56 TB of raw capacity (46 TB of useable capacity) and an effective data throughput rate of up to 600 MB/second.
- Two TS7510 Cache Controllers (3955 Model SV5), that each provide 3.5 TB of raw capacity
- Up to six TS7510 Cache Modules (3955 Model SX5), that each provide 3.5 TB of raw capacity
An optional 3952 Tape Frame Model F05, called the expansion unit, can accommodate another eight TS7510 Cache Modules, for a maximum of 56 TB of native cache capacity (46 TB useable) in a TS7510 configuration.
It is designed to provide redundancy for critical hardware components and connections between components in a TS7510. Key functional features of the TS7510 are:
- Virtual support of IBM LTO 2 and LTO 3 Tape Drives, and 3592 Tape Drives Model J1A
- Virtual support of an IBM 3584 Tape Library
- Physical direct attach support for 3584 and 3494 Tape Libraries
-
Physical tape export offered in two modes:
- Backup software controlled
- Operator initiated
- Configuration of two TS7510 Virtualization Engines as an active-active cluster.
- Support for real-time compression of data, reducing disk storage requirements.
- On demand allocation of disk storage to help maximize storage utilization using virtual cartridges. Static allocation is also supported for customized environments.
- Support of import/export to a IBM 3494 Tape Library using an Ethernet interface to manage the library.
- Interaction with the TS7510 Cache Controllers to perform transparent failover/failback from path (HBA, port, switch, channel) or storage controller failure to minimize disruption to backup or restore activities.
Completing the TS7510 configuration is a TS7510 V1R1 Software program (5639-CC7), that executes on a TS7510 Virtualization Engine.
3952 Tape Frame Model F05
The TS7510 configuration will have one or two 3952 Tape Frames Model F05. The base unit 3952 Tape Frame Model F05 supports the installation of one or two TS7510 Virtualization Engine servers and two TS7510 3955 Cache Controllers. With a second TS7510 Virtualization Engine installed, the two TS7510 Virtualization Engine servers operate in a HA configuration. In addition up to six TS7510 Cache Modules can be added for a total of up to 28 TB of raw capacity (23 TB useable) in the base 3952 Frame. A second expansion unit 3952 Tape Frame Model F05 can be added to the TS7510 configuration, which can contain up to eight TS7510 Cache Modules, for a total of up to 56 TB of raw capacity (46 TB useable). Redundant power is available with a Dual AC Power feature.
Management console
A management console is used for configuration, management, and service support for the TS7510 Virtualization Engine. This console is required by the TS7510 and is either supplied by the customer or optionally ordered from IBM. If a management console is ordered, it is placed as a separate order from the TS7510. Refer to the Hardware requirements section for the minimum requirements needed for the management console.
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act
The TS7510 Virtualization Engine is capable as of October 28, 2005, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be requested via IBM's web site at

| Product positioning |
The TS7510 Virtualization Engine is a high-performance, high-capacity open systems virtual tape product designed to augment the tape backup and restore process in large tape environments. The TS7510 is designed to aid in the tape backup and restore process by helping provide customers significant operational and throughput efficiencies via tape virtualization, namely:
- Backup window reduction
- Restore time reduction
- Data sharing and resource virtualization facilitation
- Operational efficiencies
- Low TOC
- Capability to allow multiple disparate backup applications to share the same physical resources
The TS7510 is a tape virtualization solution for open systems attachment over Fibre Channel interfaces. It is designed to help achieve significant operational efficiencies by storing the daily backup in the TS7510 disk cache. As backup data ages, the older data may be migrated to real tape for longer term storage. Since daily backup data is now written to virtual tape via the disk cache, heavy daily tape drive usage can be greatly reduced. Fewer personnel may be needed to administer the backup process when it includes virtual tape.
A TS7510 equipped with one TS7510 Virtualization Engine has four Fibre Channel ports available for host or tape attachment. A TS7510 equipped with two TS7510 Virtualization Engines has eight Fibre Channel ports available for host or tape attachment. With eight Fibre Channel interfaces a TS7510 can connect up to four ports directly to the tape SAN.
The TS7510 differs from many other open systems virtual tape products, by enabling either direct tape attachment or parallel tape attachment. Direct tape attachment is where real tape drives or libraries are physically attached to the TS7510. Parallel tape attachment is where real tape drives or libraries are attached to the host server and data is transferred from the TS7510 through the host server to real tape drives or libraries that are physically attached to the host server.
The TS7510 can help reduce the backup window in many installations. Since robotic movement, tape load/thread, and physical tape search and rewind is eliminated in virtual tape, the effective utilization of the Fibre Channel interfaces is high. That means more tape jobs can be run to virtual tape over a single interface than to real tape. If the backup window is reduced, the time allowed for migration to real tape is increased, thus potentially reducing the number of real tape drives needed for longer term backup data storage.
The TS7510 is designed to improve business continuity by providing better restore times. By having the data in the disk cache, the TS7510 is designed to help reduce restore times. With 512 virtual tape drives, and 64 virtual tape libraries, each backup server can be allocated their own virtual resources, allowing multiple and disparate backup applications to use the same physical resources. This offers the potential for infrastructure simplification. Multiple different tape libraries and tape drives can be aggregated to one or more TS7510s, helping centralize the backup resources and further reduce the operational cost.
The addition of the TS7510 into your tape backup architecture can help
provide significant operational cost reductions, and performance
benefits.
