| Description |
The TotalStorage 3953 Library Manager Model L05 brings the 3592 Tape Controller Model J70 and the 3494 VTS Models B10 and B20 into the 3584 Tape Library world. This opens up the attachment of zSeries host to 3592 Tape Drives in the 3584 Tape Library through the 3592 Tape Controller Model J70 and the 3494 VTS.
A 3494 VTS attached to the 3584 Tape Library can be part of a Peer-to-Peer (PtP) subsystem. The two VTSs in the PtP cluster can both be attached to 3494 Tape Libraries, both be attached to 3584 Tape Libraries, or one VTS attached to a 3494 and the other attached to a 3584. Each VTS in the PtP must be in a separate physical library.
An independent frame, IBM TotalStorage 3953 Tape Frame Model F05, is used to house the 3953 Library Manager and other components. This 3953 Tape Frame is external to the 3584 Tape Library and may be placed away from the 3584. The 3953 Tape Frame comes in a Base User Interface configuration (feature number 5505) and Expansion Connectivity configuration (feature number 5506). The Base Frame configuration contains the 3953 Library Manager and up to one 3592 Tape Controller Model J70. The Expansion Frame configuration can house up to three 3592 Tape Controller Model J70s.
The 3953 Tape Frame Model F05 in a Base User Frame configuration will be able to house up to the following:
- Two 3953 Library Managers Model L05
- One 3592 Tape Controller Model J70
- IBM TotalStorage Master Console (MC)
- Ethernet Switches for communications between the 3953 Library Manager, 3592 Tape Controller, VTS, and the IBM TotalStorage Master Console
- Two Fibre Channel Switches for connection of 3592 Tape Drives to the 3592 Tape Controllers Model J70
- Four Fibre Channel Switches for VTS and 3592 communications (two per VTS)
- Power for all components including support for dual line cords
- Monitor and keyboard/mouse with a monitor/keyboard/mouse switch to allow the single monitor/keyboard/mouse to be switched between two 3953 Library Managers in a rack and the Master Console, if present in the rack
The 3953 Tape Frame Model F05 as an Expansion Frame configuration will be able to house up to the following:
- Three 3592 Tape Controllers Model J70
- Ethernet Routers for communications between the 3953 Library Manager, 3592 Tape Controller, and the IBM TotalStorage Master Console
- Six Fibre Channel Switches for connection of 3592 Tape Drives to the 3592 Tape Controllers Model J70 (two per Model J70)
- Power for all components including support for dual line cords
The 3953 Library Manager zSeries attachment for the 3584 Tape Library provides an interface between the 3584 Tape Library and zSeries type hosts. The 3953 Library Manager has common microcode with the Library Manager used in the 3494 Tape Library.
The 3953 Library Manager supports the following configurations:
- 3494 VTS Model B10 or B20, and PtP VTS
- 3592 Tape Controller Model J70
- Up to 16 subsystems per 3953 Tape System (of which two can be VTSs)
- Up to four 3953 Tape Systems per 3584 Tape Library (a maximum of eight VTSs per 3584)
Open Systems attachment
For the 3584 Tape Library, attachment of stand-alone drives to Open Systems hosts will remain the same as before the introduction of 3953 Library Manager. The Open Systems host attaches directly to its drives in the 3584 without the intermediary 3953 Library Manager. All directly attached drives are in logical libraries that are separate from the logical library associated with the 3953 Library Manager. This also applies to OS/400® hosts.
Dual Library Managers
The 3953 Library Manager allows the option of two 3953 Library Managers. The second 3953 Library Manager provides the same functionality as the dual Library Managers on the 3494 Tape Library except for the control of a second accessor. The second 3953 Library Manager can be used without regard to the number of accessors in the 3584 Tape Library since the 3584 controls all accessor motion.
Dual Ethernet network
The network communications between the 3953 Library Manager and the VTS or 3592 Model J70s must have a redundant path. It is required for both a single 3953 Library Manager and dual 3953 Library Managers configuration.
Inserting cartridges
The 3953 Library Manager supports insertion of physical volumes into the library using the following methods:
- Operator manually inserts volumes directly into logical library cells by opening library doors with insert notification turned on.
- Operator inserts volumes via the Convenience I/O Station with insert notification turned on.
3584 configurations
3953 Library Manager, VTS, and 3592 Model J70 configurations in a 3584 Tape Library:
-
3494 Model B10 or B20 VTS is supported
- 3494 Model B10 supports 4 to 12 3592 Tape Drives
- 3494 Model B20 supports 4 to 12 3592 Tape Drives
- 3592 Tape Controller Model J70 with one to 16 3592 Tape Drives. The 3592 Tape Controller Model J70 needs to be housed in an external frame.
- Only LAN attached 3592 Tape Controllers Model J70 are supported.
- Maximum of two VTSs per 3953 Library Manager.
- It is not required that all the drives in a frame be associated with a single VTS or 3592 Model J70. For instance, a frame of 12 drives could have six attached to a VTS and six attached to a J70. Also, all the drives attached to a VTS or 3592 Model J70 don't necessarily need to reside in the same frame. Higher availability can be obtained by distributing tape drives associated with a VTS or 3592 Model J70 into two frames. If the power from one frame is removed, the VTS or 3592 Model J70 can still use the tape drives in the still powered frame.
- A 3953 Library Manager can only be connected to a single 3584 logical library.
- A 3584 Tape Library can have multiple 3953 Library Managers attached to it. However, each 3953 Library Manager must have its own logical library. This capability allows more than two VTSs per 3584 physical tape library.
- VTSs attached to a 3584 Tape Library can be used in a PtP configuration. One of the VTSs can be attached to a 3494 Tape Library and the other can be attached to a 3584 Tape Library or both attached to 3584s or both attached to 3494s.
- Both single and dual 3953 Library Managers are supported.
- Each side of a PtP must be in a separate physical library.
3584 communications
For communications with the 3584 Tape Library, the existing Multi-path Architecture is used. Access to the 3584 Specialist Web pages is provided through the 3953 Library Manager connection to your intranet. The assumes the 3584 Tape Library is also connected to the your intranet.
3584 logical libraries
The existing 3584 Tape Library concept of logical libraries is used to segregate the physical devices associated with VTSs and 3592 Tape Controllers Model J70 from the Open Systems drives. All VTS and 3592 Model J70 physical devices associated with a 3953 Library Manager reside in the same logical library. The logical library associated with the VTSs and 3592 Model J70s may be a portion of the library or the whole library.
IBM TotalStorage MC Attach
The 3953 Library Manager attaches to the MC. Any VTS or 3592 Model J70 attached to the 3584
Tape Library must be attached to the MC. The 3584 Tape Library must also be attached to the MC.
