Overview

You can configure your IBM eServer p5 595 (9119-595) and p5 590 (9119-590) systems to include a storage device media drawer. This media drawer can be mounted in the CEC rack with three available media bays, two in the front and one in the rear. New storage devices for the media bays include:

  • 16X/48X IDE DVD-ROM drive
  • 4.7 GB, SCSI DVD-RAM drive
  • 36/72 GB, 4 mm internal tape drive

This offering is an alternative to the 7212-102 Storage Device Enclosure, which cannot be mounted in the 590 and 595 CEC rack.

Also available are three new Capacity BackUp features for configuring systems used for disaster recovery. Capacity BackUp for the p5-590 and p5-595 systems offers an offsite, disaster recovery machine at an affordable price. This disaster recovery machine has primarily inactive Capacity on Demand (CoD) processors that can be activated in the event of a disaster. Capacity BackUp for IBM eServer p5 offers configurations of either a 32-way server (28 inactive and 4 active processors) or a 64-way server (60 inactive and 4 active processors).

Capacity BackUp systems can be turned on at any time by using the On/Off CoD activation procedure for the needed performance during an unplanned system outage. Each Capacity BackUp configuration is limited to 450 On/Off CoD credit days per processor book. For customers who require additional capacity or processor days, additional processor capacity can be purchased under IBM CoD at regular On/Off CoD activation prices. IBM HACMP™ V5 and HACMP/XD software (5765-F62), when installed, can automatically activate Capacity BackUp resources upon failover. When needed, HACMP can also activate DLPAR and CoD resources.

Capacity BackUp configurations:

  • For p5-590: Capacity BackUp POWER5™, 32 Standard Processors, 28 standby and 4 permanently active, along with 900 On/Off CoD credit processor days (450 On/Off CoD days per processor book).
  • For p5-595: Capacity BackUp POWER5, 32 or 64 Standard Processors, 28 or 60 standby and 4 permanently active, along with 900 or 1800 On/Off CoD credit processor days (450 On/Off CoD days per processor book).
  • For p5-595: Capacity BackUp POWER5, 32 or 64 Turbo Processors, 28 or 60 standby and 4 permanently active, along with 900 or 1800 On/Off CoD credit processor days (450 On/Off CoD days per processor book).

For installations that require weight distribution of 590 or 595 server racks, an optional Weight Distribution Plate (#6855) feature is available. Also available is a Weight Reduction (#6850) option to limit the maximum shipping weight to not exceed 2,500 lbs for the 590 or 595 CEC rack or the 595 Powered Expansion rack.

A LC-SC 50 micron fiber converter cable and a 62.5 micron fiber converter cable are available for 590 and 595 servers.

Description

Capacity BackUp

Capacity BackUp for IBM eServer® p5: An IBM eServer Capacity BackUp for p5 offers an offsite, disaster recovery machine at an affordable price. A 4/32-way model 590 or a 4/32-way or 4/64-way 595 leverages On/Off Capacity on Demand (CoD) capabilities into an effective backup server. The offering includes:

  • Four processors that are permanently activated and can be used for any workload
  • Either 28 or 60 standby processors to be used in the event of a disaster
  • Either 900 (4/32-way) or 1800 (4/64-way) of On/Off CoD processor days available for testing or for use in the event of a disaster

Capacity BackUp configuration options: Capacity BackUp for IBM eServer p5 servers are offered in configurations limited to the following:

  • p5-590
    • 4/32 standard processor (1.65 GHz) CBU system: Must configure 2 x FC 7730 and 4 x FC 7925
  • p5-595
    • 4/32 standard processor (1.65 GHz) CBU system: Must configure 2 x FC 7732 and 4 x FC 7990
    • 4/32 turbo processor (1.9 GHz) CBU system: Must configure 2 x FC 7731 and 4 x FC 7815
    • 4/64 standard processor (1.65 GHz) CBU system: Must configure 4 x FC 7732 and 4 x FC 7990
    • 4/64 turbo processor (1.9 GHz) CBU system: Must configure 4 x FC 7731 and 4 x FC 7815

I/O and memory minimums and maximums are the same as the IBM p5-590 and p5-595 offerings.

The standby processors cannot be permanently activated. For the On/Off CoD processor days included in the offering, additional usage days may be purchased at regular On/Off CoD activation prices. However, regular use of standby processors outside a disaster is costly.

Capacity BackUp function: The following procedure allows flexibility in defining the number of active and standby processors for p5-590 and p5-595 customized configurations. Activations of p5-590 and p5-595 Capacity BackUp (CBU) servers are made using the On/Off CoD function. The same terms and contracts apply to CBU servers as apply to ones using On/Off CoD.

IBM High Availability software solutions

If data mirroring and processor failover functions are not in place, critical business data or transactions may be lost until the backup processors and applications are activated and brought on line.

IBM High Availability Cluster Multiprocessing (HACMP) (5765-F62) software, along with its Extended Distance option (HACMP XD), can help prevent that exposure on both IBM eServer p4 and p5 CBU processors.

IBM HACMP V5 (5765-F62) manages the recovery of business application environments to backup resources. HACMP achieves availability through automation, using the redundant hardware configured in a cluster to keep application running, restarting it on backup server if necessary. HACMP can detect system and hardware failures, such as processors and adapters, and respond quickly by activating operating systems and applications on backup systems. HACMP can also detect application or system software problems that are not severe enough to interrupt proper operation of the system, such as process failure or exhaustion of system resources. HACMP monitors, detects and reacts to such conditions, allowing the system to stay available during random, unexpected software problems, or planned outages. HACMP can be configured to react to hundreds of system events.

Using HACMP can virtually eliminate downtime due to planned outages, since users, applications and data can be moved to backup systems during scheduled system maintenance. HACMP clusters can be configured to meet complex and varied application availability and recovery needs.

The Extended Distance (HACMP/XD) option can additionally provide the unlimited distance real-time data mirroring and recovery capabilities required to prevent loss of data during unplanned outages which affect an entire installation or site.

HACMP/XD can manage local or IP-based data mirroring synchronization of data at p4 and p5 Capacity BackUp processors during failover, as well as, re-synchronization of data at the primary processor upon restoration.
