Overview
The new IBM zSeries® Hardware Management Console (HMC) contains, for the first time, a dual Ethernet feature in addition to the currently available Token Ring/Ethernet feature.
Recognizing the potential need for an Ethernet Switch to support the new dual Ethernet HMC, zSeries is also introducing an Ethernet Switch feature.
And, the new Trusted Key Entry (TKE) workstation continues to include Ethernet or Token Ring
features for those customers requiring higher security for key entry.

Description
New TKE workstation with Token Ring or Ethernet
With this announcement, IBM introduces two TKE workstations: a TKE workstation with an Ethernet adapter (#0899) and a TKE workstation with a Token Ring adapter (#0896). This workstation provides a basic key management system for working with the Cryptographic Coprocessors on your zSeries and/or 9672 G5/G6 servers. The key management system allows an authorized person a method for key identification, exchange, separation, update, backup, and management. The TKE workstation with the TKE code is a tool for security administrators to use in setting up and establishing the security policy and placing it into production. This workstation is an optionally priced feature.
New Hardware Management Console with dual Ethernet or Token Ring and Ethernet
The new IBM zSeries HMC contains, for the first time, a dual Ethernet feature (#0076 or #0077) in addition to the currently available Token Ring/Ethernet feature (#0078). The Hardware Management Console (HMC) is a 4x4 PCI machine designed to provide a single point of control and single system image for managing local or remote hardware elements. Required to operate a S/390® or zSeries server, a single HMC may support multiple S/390 and zSeries servers located remotely or locally to the physical server site.
New Ethernet Switch
The Ethernet Switch (#0089) is a 16-port 10/100 Mbps standalone, unmanaged switch integrating Ethernet and Fast Ethernet.

Statement of general direction
Token Ring on HMC, SE, TKE workstation, and the IBM 2074
The z890 and z990 will be the last zSeries servers to offer Token Ring adapter features on the Hardware Management Consoles (HMCs), Support Elements (SEs), and Trusted Key Entry (TKE) workstations. The IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller will be the last controller to offer Token Ring adapter features.
IBM zSeries is making these statements to allow enterprises sufficient opportunity to prepare for a migration to Ethernet environments.
Hardware Management Consoles (HMCs)
Beginning with the next
zSeries server, after the IBM zSeries 890 and 990, all new HMCs on all currently marketed zSeries
servers are intended to become closed platforms. They will support only the HMC application and not
the installation of other applications such as the IBM ESCON® Director and the IBM Sysplex
Timer® console applications.
When available, the next-generation HMC is expected to communicate only with G5 Servers and above (Multiprise® 3000, G5/G6, z800, z900, z890, z990).
TCP/IP is intended to be the only communications protocol supported.
All statements regarding IBM's plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice.
