Overview
New PCI-X adapters expand the network connectivity options for IBM pSeries and selected RS/6000® systems.
IBM 2-Port 10/100/1000 Base-TX Ethernet PCI-X Adapter
This full-duplex, dual ported, Gigabit Ethernet adapter can be configured to run each port at 10,
100, or 1000 Mbps data rates. The adapter conforms to the IEEE 802.3ab 1000Base-T standard,
which defines Gigabit Ethernet operation over distances up to 100 meters using four pairs of CAT-5
balanced copper cabling the type of cabling within most buildings.
Performance can be improved using these features:
-
Jumbo frames (at 1000 Mbps speed), which can deliver a significant increase in throughput with a
significant decrease in CPU utilization
-
Large Send, which offloads the TCP segmentation operation from the AIX® IP layer to the adapter
for outgoing TCP segments
-
Checksum Offload, which offloads the TCP/UDP checksum operation or workload from the CPU to the
adapter
IBM 2-Port Gigabit Ethernet-SX PCI-X Adapter
This adapter offers two 1 Gbps (1000 Base-SX) full-duplex Ethernet LAN connections with throughput
on a standard shortwave multimode optical cable that conforms to the IEEE 802.3z standard.
This adapter also improves performance with the same jumbo frames and Large Send features as for the
Base-TX Ethernet PCI-X Adapter.
Key Prerequisites
-
A supporting pSeries or RS/6000 system
-
One available PCI or PCI-X slot
-
AIX 5.1 with May 2003, updates or later software
-
AIX 5.2 with May 2003, updates or later software

Description
IBM 2-Port 10/100/1000 Base-TX Ethernet PCI-X Adapter (#5706)
The IBM 2-Port 10/100/1000 Base-TX Ethernet PCI-X Adapter is a full-duplex, dual-ported Gigabit
Ethernet adapter with highly integrated components. It can run each port at 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps
data rates. The adapter conforms to the IEEE 802.3ab 1000Base-T standard, which defines Gigabit
Ethernet operation over distances up to 100 meters using four pairs of CAT-5 balanced copper cabling
the type of cabling within most buildings. The adapter interfaces to the system via either a
PCI or PCI-X bus. This adapter also supports AIX Network Install Manager (NIM) operations that
require a network boot.
When running at the 1000 Mbps speed, the adapter supports jumbo frames, with a simultaneous
significant decrease in CPU utilization. Jumbo frames extend Ethernet to 9000 bytes.
Its Large Send function, sometimes known as TCP segmentation, offloads the TCP segmentation
operation from the AIX IP layer to the adapter for outgoing (transmit side) TCP segments. Also, the
Checksum Offload function offloads the TCP/UDP checksum operation or workload from the CPU to the
adapter.
The IBM 2-Port 10/100/1000 Base-TX Ethernet PCI-X Adapter (#5706) should be considered where maximum
port density is required per I/O card slot. If card slots are not the limiting factor and maximum
throughput is required, the single-port IBM 10/100/1000 Base-TX Ethernet PCI-X Adapter (#5701) is
the preferred solution.
For optimum performance, the adapter should be placed in a 64-bit PCI-X card slot whenever possible.
IBM 2-Port Gigabit Ethernet-SX PCI-X Adapter (#5707)
The IBM 2-Port Gigabit Ethernet-SX PCI-X Adapter provides two 1 Gbps (1000 Base-SX), full-duplex
Ethernet LAN connections with throughput on a standard shortwave multimode optical cable that
conforms to the IEEE 802.3z standard. The adapter supports distances of 260 meters for 62.5 micron
multimode fiber and 550 meters for 50.0 micron multimode fiber. This adapter supports AIX
Network Install Manager (NIM).
Its Large Send function, sometimes known as TCP segmentation, offloads the TCP segmentation
operation from the AIX IP layer to the adapter for outgoing (transmit side) TCP segments. Also, a
Checksum Offload function offloads the TCP/UDP checksum operation or workload from the CPU to the
adapter.
For optimum performance, the adapter should be placed in a 64-bit PCI-X card slot whenever possible.
Note:
The 2-Port IBM Gigabit Ethernet-SX PCI-X Adapter incorporates an LC type connector on the card. If
connecting into an older, existing SC-type connector network, an LC-SC 62.5 Micron Fiber Converter
Cable (#2459) or LC-SC 50 Micron Fiber Converter Cable (#2456) is required.
