Description

High-Performance Server Subsystems

These servers are high-throughput, two-way SMP-capable Intel Xeon-based network servers with excellent scalability when you add memory and a second processor. They incorporate powerful 2.60 or 2.80 GHz Intel Xeon processors with 512 KB advanced transfer L2 cache. These flip-chip, pin grid array 2 (FC-PGA2) processors feature advanced transfer L2 caches that are integrated onto the processor core and run at the same clock speed as the processor core. The advanced transfer cache is a result of a "backside bus" that is 256 bits wide. It features a quad-wide cache line that can transfer four 64-bit cache line segments at one time to deliver full-speed capability. The cache is eight-way set associative.

Two Intel Xeon connectors are standard on the system board to support installation of a second processor. High-speed, 266 MHz DDR SDRAM is optimized for 100 MHz processor-to-memory subsystem performance. The xSeries 335 server uses the ServerWorks Grand Champion LE (GCLE) chipset to maximize throughput from processors to memory, and to a primary 32-bit and secondary 64-bit PCI buses. The two expansion slots are supported through the secondary 64-bit bus.

High-Availability and Serviceability Features

The xSeries 335 server delivers excellent reliability and serviceability features:

  • Two hot-swap HDD bays (hot-swap models) with SCA-2 connectors supporting SAF-TE functions
  • ECC DIMMs combined with an integrated ECC memory controller correcting soft and hard single-bit memory errors, while minimizing disruption of service to LAN clients
  • Chipkill memory, providing correction for up to four bits per DIMM, keeping the server up and running while taking the inoperative memory offline
  • ECC L2 cache processors to improve data integrity and help reduce down time
  • PFA on HDD options, memory, processors, VRMs, and fans to alert the system administrator of an imminent component failure
  • Dual Broadcom 5703 Gigabit Ethernet controllers support:

Expandability and Growth

The xSeries 335 server contains high levels of function and storage capacity for a 1 U, 19-inch rack-drawer package. It supports customer installation of adapters, processors, memory, and HDD options. Functions (such as SVGA video, Ultra320 SCSI, dual-EIDE, and two Gigabit Ethernet controllers) are integrated on the system board. Features include:

  • Rack-optimized design for 19-inch wide industry-standard rack cabinets supported in the NetBAY42 and NetBAY25
  • Keyboard/Video/Mouse (KVM) chaining cable supporting xSeries Cable Chaining Technology Cable Kit that greatly simplifies cable management and control of up to 42 xSeries 335 servers

The xSeries 335 server includes a number of tools and programs designed to make ownership a positive experience. From the start, IBM programs help you purchase servers, get them running, and keep them running over the long haul. IBM can help your company maintain ownership of technology leadership network servers.

  • IBM on-site, three-year limited warranty with next-business-day service (same-business-day service optionally available) protects your investment if a problem occurs. This service also includes replacement of parts identified through PFA.
  • The ServerProven®,7 program lets you confidently configure your server with various devices and operating systems. This program provides compatibility information from actual testing of the xSeries 335 server with various adapters and devices.
  • The ServerGuide CD library includes online publications, in addition to utilities and drivers that enable assisted loading of popular network operating systems.
  • Electronic support on the Web provides additional support in an easy-to-use format.

Product Positioning

The xSeries 335 server is an ultrathin, rack platform. The most powerful 1 U server of the xSeries rack-optimized offerings, it is positioned between the xSeries 305 and the xSeries 345 server. The xSeries 305 also has a 1 U form factor, but supports uniprocessor Pentium® 4 operations and only fixed Ultra160 SCSI or IDE HDDs. The xSeries 345 server includes more slots and drive bays; however, it requires a 2 U rack space.

High-density, two-way, Xeon-based xSeries 335 and xSeries 345 servers enable customer installation of features. You can prepare for future expansion to meet changing reliability needs. At the same time, the server can handle emerging applications requiring maximum computing power and function in a small amount of rack space. These applications include:

  • Telecommunications
  • Active directory services
  • Scientific and technical computing
  • Linux clustering

These powerful servers also meet traditional enterprise network server requirements, but with an added benefit of requiring less space.

Compatibility: The xSeries 335 server contains licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. System SurePath® BIOS is loaded from a "flash" EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the xSeries 335 server and to maintain compatibility with many current software programs.

Contact your IBM representative, IBM Business Partner, or refer to the IBM Sales Manual for information on the compatibility of hardware and software for xSeries servers. The Sales Manual is updated periodically as new features and options are announced that support these servers.

Limitations

  • xSeries 335 server contains a single, configurable serial port. It can be configured to be operating-system controlled, service-processor controlled, or shared between the two. You can set the configuration by changing the header location to which the internal serial cable is plugged. The default location from the factory is in the shared position. In the shared position, the service processor controls the port until the operating system is running, then the operating system takes control. The service processor can regain control of the port for user-configured dial-out situations or if the operating system is not available, but operating system control cannot be reestablished without resetting the server.
  • The xSeries 335 servers can address a maximum of 8 GB of system memory All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access (DMA). The xSeries 335 server supports 256 MB, 512 MB, and 1 GB PC2100 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM DIMM. It will support 2 GB, when it becomes available. All supported DIMMs can coexist in the same system. Memory must be populated in pairs. Refer to the Planning Information section for supported memory options.
  • To ensure proper air flow for cooling, the xSeries 335 server requires a rack with a perforated door, such as the NetBAY42 SR or NetBAY25 SR. An alternative is to remove the front door of rack cabinets where the door panel is of solid construction.
  • Microprocessor SMP upgrades must be of the same type and clock speed. Mixing microprocessors of different speeds or cache size is not supported.
  • Chaining xSeries 335 servers is supported through a console. Chaining through a console switch is not currently supported.
  • Use the version of ServerGuide that is shipped with the system, or a later version, to load software and drivers. Earlier versions of ServerGuide may not be compatible with the server.

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities

xSeries 335 and Related Options: The xSeries 335 server and related options are designated as customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with system and options.

Configuration Information

Bay Configuration: The xSeries 335 server contains four drive bays. The top bay on the left contains the standard 1.44 MB, 3.5-inch slim-high diskette drive, the bay beneath contains the standard CD-ROM drive. Two 3.5-inch, slim-high, hot-swap bays (hot-swap models) located side-by-side from the center to the right side of the server support various hot-swap HDD installation. Models with standard non-hot-swap HDDs contain one 3.5-inch, slim-high bay for additional HDD expansion.

The 24x-10x IDE CD-ROM is cabled directly to the IDE port.

Cabling — Standard Non-RAID Configurations: xSeries 335 hot-swap models contain a DASD backplane supporting two hot-swap, SCA-2-compliant drive bays. The backplane is connected to the internal connector of the integrated Ultra320 SCSI controller through a 16-bit LVD SCSI cable.

Additional Cabling Alternatives: xSeries 335 non-hot-swap models can contain either:

  • A 40.0 GB EIDE HDD cabled directly to an integrated EIDE controller through a two-drop cable
  • A supported Ultra320 SCSI HDD cabled to the Ultra320 SCSI controller through a two-drop LVDS cable

In configurations where external SCSI device attachment is required, a supported SCSI adapter or ServeRAID™ controller must be installed.

Rack Installations: xSeries 335 1 U, rack-drawer models are designed to be installed in a 19-inch rack cabinet designed for 660 mm (26-inch) deep devices, such as the NetBAY42U ER and NetBAY42U SR or NetBAY25 SR.

If you use a non-IBM rack, the cabinet must meet the EIA-310-D standards with a depth of at least 711 mm (28 in). Also, adequate space (approximately two inches for the front bezel and one inch for air flow) must be maintained from the slide assembly to the front door of the rack cabinet to allow sufficient space for the door to close and provide adequate air flow.

xSeries Cable Chaining Technology Cable Kit (06P4792) — Cabling Considerations: Single or multiple xSeries 335 servers can be connected to a console through the use of the xSeries Cable Chaining Technology Cable Kit. A KVM chaining cable is standard with each xSeries 335 server. This 254 mm (10-inch) jumper cable is used to "chain" one server to another. The xSeries Cable Chaining Technology Cable Kit provides the interface to attach a keyboard, mouse, or monitor to the last xSeries 335 of the chain.

The xSeries Cable Chaining Technology Cable Kit supports the following devices:

  • IBM Two-Button Mouse (28L3673)
  • IBM 84-Key Space Saver Cost Reduced Keyboard (28L3644)
  • IBM T541 Compact Flat Panel TFT Display (9512)

The xSeries 335 server also works with the new IBM NetBAY ACT Local and Remote Console CAT-5 chaining solutions. Cables are available to convert the C2T port on the xSeries 335 to CAT-5 cable which, can be fed directly into one of the NetBAY Console Manager products.

Processor Options: The xSeries 335 server is a 2.60 or 2.80 GHz Intel® Xeon processor system that supports internal processing speeds of up to 2.8 GHz and processing operations to memory and the PCI bus at 100 MHz. It contains an integrated, full-speed 512 KB ECC L2 cache. This system supports SMP applications through installation in the second processor slot of xSeries 335 models with like processors.

Supported Memory Options: The following memory options are supported:

  • 256 MB PC2100 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM DIMM (33L5037)
  • 512 MB PC2100 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM DIMM (33L5038)
  • 1 GB PC2100 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM DIMM (33L5039)

Power Considerations: The xSeries 335 sever includes a standard 331-watt power supply. This power supply is capable of providing sufficient power to run the server fully configured with supported devices.

Cable Orders: The dual 10/100/1000 Mbps, full duplex, Ethernet PCI controllers, standard with the xSeries 335 server, are connected directly to independent RJ-45 connectors. The RJ-45 connectors provides a 10/100/1000 Base-T interface (either at half or full duplex) for connecting twisted-pair cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with the server. To connect the Ethernet controller to a repeater or switch, use an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. For 100 Mbps or higher operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For 10 Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used.

There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections.

Installability: The xSeries 335 server requires about 20 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install an operating system, additional adapters, or features.

Security, Auditability, and Control

Security and auditability features include:

  • Power-on and privileged-access password functions provide controls of who has access to the data and server setup program on the server.
  • Set unattended boot mode allows the system keyboard to be locked to all entries except the password and at the same time allows other computers on the network to access the system disk drive.
  • A selectable boot sequence can be used to prevent unauthorized installation of software or removal of data from the diskette drive.

These servers are intended to be installed and secured in a rack. It is a customer's responsibility to ensure that the server and rack installation are secure to prevent sensitive data from being removed.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
