Notes
Relative performance measurements are derived from commercial processing
workload (CPW) on iSeries. CPW is representative of commercial
applications, particularly those that do significant database processing
in conjunction with journaling and commitment control. CPW values may
not be realized in all environments.
-
Processor CPW
Maximum relative performance for this processor feature running
commercial processing workloads. This value, stated as Client/Server CPW
in previous releases, can be used to compare relative performance between
various processor features.
-
Interactive CPW
Relative performance available to perform interactive workloads.
The amount of Interactive CPW consumed will reduce the available
Processor CPW by the same amount.
Model Upgrades
Upgrades to the Model 890 are available from the following iSeries
servers:
-
Model 740
-
Model 830
-
Model 840
iSeries configurators are available to IBM representatives and Business
Partners to guide them through the upgrade considerations. Refer to the
Optional Feature Descriptions
section for detailed information on upgrades and upgrade path tables.
CUoD
You can purchase iSeries Models 830, 840, and 890 with extra
processor capacity built right into the server delivered to your door.
Each of these models offers processor features with varying amounts of
capacity that can be turned on for a one-time use (trial) or for
long-term use (permanent). The extra capacity is not immediately usable.
You don't pay for it until you decide to actually use it.
Processor on Demand (POD) activation features enable you to order and
activate the additional processor capacity you need. When a quantity of
POD activation features is ordered, a POD activation code is generated
and shipped (mailed and posted on the Web) to you. By simply typing the
POD activation code (think of it as a capacity key) on the proper server
screen, the immediate activation of your requested capacity (no IPL
required) is completed, and is ready to use. If the server is
partitioned, the activated capacity simply needs to be assigned to a
partition prior to use.
For new server purchases, or upgrades to CUoD servers, you can include
POD activation features on the original order and have processor capacity
activated before the server is shipped. This tremendous benefit
customizes the performance characteristics of the server to your
specifications (no vital product data (VPD)) is required to be sent from
the field to fulfill these orders. Any downstream MES upgrade orders to
the server require VPD (retrieved from the server) be sent to the plant
of manufacture prior to the scheduling and fulfillment of orders
containing POD activation features.

servers, click on:
A planning guide can help you take advantage of this exciting capability.
iSeries Models with CUoD:
Now you can purchase iSeries Models 830, 840, and 890 with
extra processor capacity built in.
Each processor feature with CUoD on the Models 830, 840, and 890
comes with a number of
start-up
processors and a number of
stand-by
processors.

Limited availability as ASP Solution Server
Trial Capacity
You can add performance instantly on an iSeries server by using the
available trial capacity. All of the stand-by processors can be
activated for up to 14 days. No IPL is required.
You simply specify the desire to use the trial capacity on the
appropriate CUoD screen. The 14-day clock counts the elapsed hours while
the server is powered up. When the 14-day clock expires, processors are
deactivated from the primary partition to restore the system to the
"pre-trial" configuration. If an insufficient number of processors are
available/assigned to the primary partition to allow this to occur, the
server experiences degraded performance until a sufficient number of
processors are made available.
Trial capacity provides an excellent opportunity to try the full
processor capacity (100% of stand-by processors) of the server before you
buy additional permanent capacity. In addition, trial capacity enables
you to have immediate access to extra capacity in times of dynamic
growth.
If you are planning to purchase an additional amount of permanent
processor capacity, using the trial capacity can assist in determining
the right amount. In addition, the use of the trial capacity can buffer
any delays in the order/fulfillment process associated with ordering a
quantity of POD activation features.
After the purchase of a quantity of POD activation features, the server's
trial capacity is reset and a new 14-day trial capacity period is
available for the remaining stand-by processors.
Permanent Capacity
Once you decide to permanently activate some of your stand-by processors,
you can contact your business partner or IBM representative to place an
order for a quantity of POD activation features.
Starting in second quarter 2002, you can purchase POD activation features
for iSeries Models 830, 840, and 890 through IBM's e-business site
(ibm.com).
Once an order reaches the IBM manufacturing site, a POD activation code
(capacity key) unique to your server is generated. The POD activation
code is mailed to you and also posted at the following iSeries CUoD Web
site for quick access:
Allow several days for the order process to complete and the POD
activation code to be mailed and posted. Using the trial capacity
provided with each iSeries server can mitigate any delays in the order
process and help ensure you have the capacity you need when you need it.
As part of the order process for a field upgrade of a currently installed
iSeries server, VPD must be collected from the target server and sent to
the IBM manufacturing site responsible for fulfillment of an order for
POD activation features. This data is used in the generation of a POD
activation code that works specifically for the targeted server to
activate the desired number of stand-by processors.
Step-by-step directions for ordering POD activation features and the
subsequent entering of a POD activation code can be reviewed in the
Planning Guide for iSeries CUoD:
Processor Feature Conversions
Processor-to-processor upgrade paths enable you to grow your iSeries as
your business grows and leverage existing investments.
A two-step process is used to convert features with stand-by capacity.
-
Step 1
Stand-by processors must be activated on the original server by
ordering a quantity of POD activation features (the generated POD
activation code need not be entered on the server).
-
Step 2
A processor feature conversion can be ordered.
Following the processor feature conversion, all POD activation features
are removed from the install records associated with this server. If the
upgrade did not result in a new server being shipped, no POD activation
features can accompany this upgrade. The new processor feature should
first be installed, and then a separate order for a quantity of POD
activation features placed. Don't forget to send in the VPD to ensure
the prompt fulfillment of the downstream order for a quantity of POD
activation features.
A list of the processor feature conversions is included in the
Optional Feature Descriptions
section.
More Upgrade Paths to Models 830 and 840
With e-business becoming more pervasive every day, now may be the right
time to position your business to take advantage of its opportunities.
If you don't need the high-end performance of the new Model 890,
look at the iSeries 830 and 840. More upgrade paths from existing 7XX
and 8XX models are available.
Selected Model 830 and 840 servers with 4-way, or above, processors
come with "built-in" capacity that you can activate when needed.
When you upgrade to an 830 or 840 server, you can choose to stay with
OS/400 V5R1 to reduce the complexity of your migration. Or, you can
choose the functionally enhanced V5R2 for more flexible workload
management options for rapid deployment of high-performance enterprise
applications, and server consolidation.

30-Disk Expansion w/Dual Line Cord (#5117):
#5117 is a disk unit expansion enclosure feature for a dual line
cord enabled #9094 Base I/O Expansion Tower. #5117 includes two 15-disk
unit enclosures, one 765-watt power supply, backplanes, and cables. One
#4748 or #4778 PCI RAID Disk Unit Controller is required to support the
15-disk units in each of the two-disk unit enclosures included with
#5117.
Opt. Base 1.8m I/O Rack (#8093):
#8093 is an optional expansion rack for the Model 890. It
supports up to 90 disk units, up to 22 PCI IOAs, and up to four removable
media units. #8093 can be ordered with new Model 890 servers, or on
upgrades to the Model 890.
The #8093 consists of a 1.8m rack with two enclosures. The bottom
enclosure is essentially a #9094 Base I/O Tower with side covers and
casters removed and with the #5107 30-Disk Expansion feature included in
the base. The top enclosure is essentially a #5074 PCI Expansion Tower
with side covers and casters removed and with the #5101 30-Disk Expansion
feature included in the base.
Included with the bottom enclosure is one JTAG cable and one V/S Comm
cable required to attach the bottom enclosure to the Model 890
system unit. Also included is #9887, Base HSL-2 Bus Adapter, and #9943,
Base PCI IOP. #4778, PCI RAID Disk Unit Controller is required.
Included with the top enclosure are #9691, Base HSL Bus Adapter, or
#9739, Base Optical Bus Adapter to provide the HSL interface to the
system, #0574, #5074 Equivalent Specify, and #9943, Base PCI IOP.
Each enclosure supports 45 disk units, for a total of 90. Disk units are
partitioned groups of 15, each group of 15-disk units is further divided
into three groups of five-disk units, each group of five-disk units
supported on a separate Ultra3 SCSI (LVD-SCSI) bus from a #4778 PCI RAID
Disk Unit Controller.
The #8093 also supports up to four removable media devices (internal
tape, CD-ROM, and DVD-RAM). These removable media devices are supported
by the two PCI RAID Disk Unit Controllers (#4778) that support the first
group of 15-disk units in each enclosure.
The two enclosures in the #8093 are separately attached to the system
unit via HSL cables as if they were a stand-alone #9094 and #5074. They
are also treated as separate units for HSL loop plugging and
configuration rules and recommendations. As such, the bottom enclosure
must be attached to the system unit's first HSL loop.
Both enclosures can be connected to the first HSL loop. In this case,
IBM recommends that the two enclosures be connected by the 6m HSL to
HSL-2 cable (#1474). The top enclosure of the #8093 may be used on a
different system than the bottom enclosure, but cannot be ordered that
way. Once the system is received, to use the top enclosure on another
system, the #0574 must be removed from the records of the original
ordered system and added to the records of other system, using a Record
Purpose Only (RPO) change.

PCI Twinaxial Workstation IOA (#4746):
Provides support for up to 40 twinaxial displays and printers. A
20-ft cable with an 8-port expansion (breakout) box is included with this
adapter. Each port supports seven attached devices, allowing for
physical attachment of 56 devices, of which only 40 can be active at one
time.
PCI Cryptographic Coprocessor (#4801):
#4801 provides a rich set of data encryption and authentication
services for applications requiring high security. Cryptographic keys
are stored in a tamper-resistant module on the coprocessor. This feature
is ideally suited for banking and financial applications; however, with
the tamper resistant-module the coprocessor can be used to implement
other advanced applications such as electronic postage metering.
Application services provided by the coprocessor include:
-
Data encryption using Triple-Data Encryption Standard (DES)
-
Digital signature generation/verification using RSA public-key
cryptography
-
Data integrity checking using MD5 and SHA-1 secure hash algorithms
-
Financial PIN support for automatic teller machine (ATM) networks
-
Basic Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) block operations
-
Secure storage of keys in a Federal Information Processing Standard
(FIPS) 140-1 Level 3 tamper-resistant module.
The PCI Cryptographic Coprocessor is compatible with IBM's Common
Cryptographic Architecture (CCA). OS/400 Option 35 CCA Cryptographic
Service Provider is required along with Cryptographic Access Provider
128-bit (5722-AC3) licensed program. Both Option 35 and the LPP are
no-charge.
For more information, visit:
Prerequisite: One PCI slot under a base or feature #2843 IOP.
PCI Cryptographic Accelerator (#4805):
Feature #4805 provides improved performance for
high-transaction-rate secure Web applications which use the secure
sockets layer (SSL) or transport layer security (TLS) protocols. SSL/TLS
is the predominant method for securing Web transactions. Applications
using SSL/TLS include those transferring payment information (for
example, credit card numbers) over the Internet, for example, between a
Web browser and a server in the case of B2C or between servers in the
case of B2B. Establishing SSL/TLS secure Web connections requires very
compute intensive cryptographic processing. Feature #4805 off-loads
cryptographic processing associated with the establishment of a SSL/TLS
session, thus freeing the server for other processing.
The Cryptographic Accelerator is targeted to high-transaction-rate secure
Web applications using SSL/TLS. If your application requires a FIPS
140-1 certified, tamper-resistant module for storing cryptographic keys
and/or requires financial PIN processing, then features #4801 or #4802
Cryptographic Coprocessors should be your choice.
Note:
FIPS 140-1 is a U.S. Government National Institute of Standards &
Technology (NIST) administered standard and certification program for
cryptographic modules.
Prerequisite: OS/400 V5R2, or later.

Security, Auditability, and Control
iSeries servers use the security and auditability features of Operating
System/400®. Use of these facilities is optional. The security
measures supplied by OS/400 are designed to reduce the risk of users
changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The OS/400
security features include the use of passwords, a security option to
limit a user to only those functions provided by customer-designed menus,
and a security option to limit read/write access for files, libraries,
and folders during normal operations. To achieve increased security, the
OS/400 controls should be combined with physical security, division of
duties, and other appropriate measures.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation
of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls
in application systems and communications facilities.
