The IBM pSeries 660 Model 6H1 (7026-6H1) is the latest member of the 64-bit family of symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) servers from IBM. It gives you tools for managing e-business, new application flexibility, and advanced technology, all designed to help you capitalize on the e-business revolution.
The pSeries 660 Model 6H1 offers an innovative design that makes it ideal for mission-critical ERP/SCM, Data Warehouse/Data Mart, OLTP, and e-business applications. It blends copper silicon-on-insulator technology and larger memory capacity with a proven system architecture to give you reliability you can count on. Scalability is enhanced by increasing the amount of memory to 32 GB, by leveraging the enhancements of AIX® Version 5.1, and the options of server clustering or SP attachment within your enterprise.
Combined with an outstanding array of industry software and services, the Model 6H1 is a cost-efficient growth path to the future. It provides 64-bit scalability via the 64-bit RS64 III and IV processors packaged in 1-, 2-, 4-, and 6-way processor configurations and incorporates an I/O subsystem supporting 32-bit and 64-bit standard PCI adapters. The Model 6H1 has 1-, 2-, and 4-way processors that operate at 450 MHz or 600 MHz while the 6-way processor operates at 668 MHz. The L2 cache per processor is 2 MB for the 1-way processors, 4 MB for the 2- and 4-way processors, and 8 MB for the 6-way processor.
The pSeries 660 Model 6H1 is packaged as a rack-mounted Central Electronics Complex (CEC) drawer, cable-attached to rack-mounted Remote I/O (RIO) drawers. The CEC and I/O drawers offer redundant power options and redundant cooling. The CEC drawer incorporates the system processors, memory, and supporting systems logic.
System storage is provided via remotely attached SCSI, SSA, or Fibre Channel storage subsystems. A fully configured pSeries 660 Model 6H1 system includes:
The pSeries 660 Model 6H1 CEC and I/O drawers are mounted in the IBM 7014 rack. Additional space in the 7014 rack may be utilized for various storage and communications subsystems.
AIX Version 4.3.3 or 5.1 software is included with every pSeries 660 Model 6H1 and can be preinstalled.
IBM anticipates that there will be 64-bit Linux distributions available second half 2001 for the pSeries 660 Model 6H1.

RAS Features and Functions
Excellent quality and reliability are inherent in all facets of IBM pSeries products. The measures taken help the products to perform reliably, efficiently handle infrequent failures in a nondisruptive fashion, and provide timely and competent repair allowing resumption of operations with minimal inconvenience. Reliability begins with the development of architectures, where RAS innovations are of paramount importance. It flows through design and product development stages, where RAS designs are reviewed, assessed, developed, evaluated, and optimized. It continues through the manufacturing and release processes, where the manufacturing quality is extensively measured and evaluated. It culminates in service and support, where:
pSeries system processes, from the architectural and concept phases of development through the provision of service and support, are ISO-certified and audited periodically for ISO compliance by representatives of Underwriters Laboratories.
Reliability Fault Avoidance: Major effort has been spent on the development of the pSeries 660 Model 6H1 system to analyze single points-of-failure within the CEC (comprised of the processors, memory, and the I/O interface) and to either eliminate them or to provide hardening capabilities to significantly reduce the probability of failure. The best way to harden a system is to prevent errors from occurring. Components within the CEC were selected to provide "server" levels of reliability. These components provide the highest levels of reliability available within IBM and undergo additional stress testing and screening. During the design and development process, subsystems go through rigorous verification and integration testing processes. During system manufacturing, systems again go through a thorough testing process in pursuance of the highest product quality level.
Extensive error detecting and checking circuitry is included so that most infrequent component failures are recognized and corrected automatically or properly reported for isolation and repair, thus preserving the integrity of data stored and transported in the system. Hardware and software failures are recorded in the AIX log facility and analyzed by error log analysis (ELA) routines to provide information to the system administrator on the causes of system problems. This also enables IBM service representatives to bring along needed replacement hardware components when a service call is placed, thus minimizing system repair time.
DASD Predictive Failure Analysis® (PFA) provides the ability to detect an imminent disk failure and report the findings through the AIX log. Then the disk can be replaced either immediately or at a later scheduled time, depending on the configuration of the DASD subsystem. With the RAID controller and the DASD hot-plug design, normal operation can usually continue in the presence of a failed disk and a concurrent repair often can be performed while the application continues uninterrupted.
Availability Backup and Replication: The pSeries 660 Model 6H1 brings new levels of availability features and functions to the Enterprise Server. The optional N+1 power subsystem provides redundancy in case of power supply failure. Hot-plugged power supplies in the CEC and I/O drawers allow concurrent repair when redundant power is installed. Optional uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems are supported for this system.
The Model 6H1's CEC and I/O drawer cooling subsystems have N+1 fans, which can be replaced concurrently if the optional redundant power is installed.
Systems equipped with optional redundant power have independent line cords for each power supply in the CEC and I/O drawers.
Constant power monitoring hardware assists in detection of early loss of source power and notifies the operating system to effect an orderly shutdown. This same power monitoring hardware is designed to detect the loss of redundant bulk power supplies, regulators, fans, and blowers and report them to the operating system for logging in the system error log and for notification for deferred maintenance.
The Model 6H1's enhanced service processor is functional in standby mode and does not require a functional system for operation. This function provides enhanced RAS by not requiring AIX to be operational for interfacing with a remote system administrator or Electronic Service Agent.
The Model 6H1 uses AIX online (concurrent) diagnostics with error log analysis and service aids, which allow administrators or IBM service representatives to diagnose many potential system malfunctions without interrupting end-user operation.

Chipkill Memory: The pSeries 660 Model 6H1 offers Chipkill Memory with selected memory options. Using advanced technology derived from IBM's ultra-reliable System/390® enterprise servers, Chipkill Memory protects the server from any single memory chip failure and multi-bit errors from any portion of a single memory chip.
Memory chip failures can cause server system crashes that can result in the permanent loss of business data. Many file server applications lack the means to recover data after a catastrophic failure of this kind. Even when recovery is possible, it can take hours resulting in significant losses in productivity or revenue.
Chipkill DIMMs for the Model 6H1 provide the self-contained capability to correct real-time, multi-bit DRAM errors, including complete DRAM failures. This "RAID for memory" technology provides enhanced multi-bit error detection and correction that is transparent to the system.

Microcode Discovery Service: Microcode Discovery Service is a service that allows you to determine if your pSeries 660 Model 6H1 is at the latest microcode level. Using a secure Internet connection and a Web browser, Microcode Discovery Service can capture the machine data and generate a real-time comparison report showing subsystems that may need to be updated.
To accomplish this, you must install the service tool onto your system. This tool, Inventory Scout, will run as a daemon on the server. The tool will create a file containing the current level of all microcode (adapters, devices, system, and support processor) levels in the system. This file will be used to compare the system level codes against the latest available levels on the IBM Web site. You will then receive a report notifying you of any new updates available along with a link from which the microcode can be downloaded.
Electronic Service Agent
Electronic Service Agent capability is shipped with every pSeries 660 Model 6H1 system. Electronic Service Agent requires a modem to dial for service.

Hardware service requests go to IBM's remote support center for
initial problem diagnosis. This approach gives you direct access to
skilled specialists. These specialists can either solve the problem over
the phone or help get it resolved as quickly as possible. They are
backed up by a highly-trained product engineering team to assist in
problem identification and resolution.
This product is not impacted by euro currency.
The pSeries 660 Model 6H1 consists of a rack-mounted CEC drawer containing the processors and memory connected to another rack-mounted drawer containing the media, hot-plug I/O slots, and optional boot bays. Both drawers have redundant power options and redundant cooling. The incorporation of hot-plug PCI I/O slots brings new and increased levels of availability for this system. The need to power down and reboot when adding or replacing most PCI adapters is eliminated, thus reducing time delays while keeping network and application processing up and running. The Model 6H1 system can accommodate 1 processor module in its smallest configuration and grow to 2, 4, or 6 processors as required, offering outstanding scalability as your business needs dictate.
The Model 6H1 is targeted at the key commercial processing segments of e-business, ERP, SCM, and Business Intelligence. In each segment, the Model 6H1 can meet critical requirements. For example:
The Model 6H1's rack-mounted drawer configuration offers flexibility regarding the number of CEC and I/O drawers that can be mounted in the rack, providing more compute and I/O power per square foot of valuable floor space. The Model 6H1 CEC and I/O drawers each require 5U (EIA Units) of rack space. Thus, a Model 6H1 configuration requires only 10U of rack space. This configuration, which consists of one CEC drawer and one I/O drawer, provides 14 available hot-plug PCI slots with up to six processors and 32 GB of memory.
External disk storage is required for the Model 6H1 as data storage internal to the drawers is not provided; however, optional boot bays are available in the primary I/O drawer. (The internal boot disk option requires the space of 2 PCI slots, leaving 12 available.) Memory in the CEC drawer can expand up to 32 GB, providing ample operating performance for demanding applications.
Other reliability functions help to make the Model 6H1 very competitive. Its CPU de-allocation function enables the system to take a failing processor offline without rebooting the system in the remote possibility that a failure should occur. The service processor can record this action and notify the systems administrator or service personnel of the condition. Computing operation continues with the processor deactivated, allowing repair to be scheduled at a time convenient to your processing schedule. Hot-plug functionality of the PCI I/O subsystem brings new levels of up-time to your system for the replacement or addition of I/O adapters. The design of this function shows a concern for the usability, convenience, and safety for the customer who performs this task. Selective disablement of an adapter can be made as necessary while system operations not dependent on this adapter continue to run without being affected. AIX assists the user by guiding him through the process, helping to ensure success. In addition, an HACMP packaged solution with dual Model 6H1 systems will be offered to provide industry-leading high availability.
The Model 6H1 performs its role as the entry, rack-based platform of the pSeries family of SMP servers by complementing the deskside pSeries 620 Model 6F1, the mid-sized rack-based 7017-M80, and the pSeries 680 Model S85 in this broad server lineup.

IBM plans to make available a pSeries follow-on server to the RS/6000® Model M80 in the second half of 2001. To help protect customers' investment in RS/6000 Model M80 servers, IBM also intends to provide processor upgrade offerings for the RS/6000 Model M80 that are expected to deliver performance equivalent to the new pSeries system.

Homologation: Telecom Environmental Testing (Safety and EMC): Homologation approval for specific countries has been initiated with the IBM Homologation and Type Approval (HT&A) organization in LaGaude.
This pSeries model and applicable features meet the environmental testing requirements of the country TELECOM and have been designed and tested in compliance with the Full Quality Assurance Approval (FQAA) process as delivered by the British Approval Board for Telecom (BABT), the U.K. Telecom Regulatory authority.
Product Safety/Country Testing/Certification
The pSeries 660 Model 6H1 must be installed in a new or existing RS/6000® 7014 rack or in an existing 7017 with feature number 7000, 7036, or 7037 rack. This assures proper dimensions, mounting surfaces, power distribution, ventilation, stability, and other functional requirements are met. The recommended rack is the RS/6000 7014 Model T00.
Either an ASCII terminal with an attachment cable or a graphics display with an attachment cable and graphics adapter is required for initial set up and must be available locally for service. If an ASCII terminal is used, it must be attached through a serial port.
If a graphics adapter is installed, console messages (IPL progress/error information/systems management information) will be directed to the graphics adapter. The system does not detect if a display is attached to the adapter. The user may attach any supported device to the adapter.
If a graphics adapter is not installed, console messages will be directed to serial port S1 or S2. The system does not detect if an ASCII console is attached to serial port S1 or S2; use of any device other than an ASCII console on serial port S1 or S2 will result in lost messages and unpredictable results on that device.

Processor Feature Conversions pSeries 660 Model 6H1: Customers with installed pSeries 660 Model 6H1 systems may increase the number of processors in their system up to a maximum of a 6-way SMP via feature conversions. Such conversions are accomplished by replacing the system's existing processor card with a processor card containing a greater number of processors. The existing Model 6H1 processor card being replaced is returned to IBM.
