New Age Applications with Linux
IBM is committed to addressing the e-business needs:
-
Delivering a cross-platform application framework for e-business
-
Continuing to evolve the technical superiority of its hardware, software,
and services
-
Embracing and facilitating integrated standards and an open source model
IBM embraces Linux, the fast growing, cross-platform operating system.
IBM will provide Linux-enabled hardware, middleware, services/support
offerings, and a Linux application development environment to further
assist you with the development and deployment of applications in today's
heterogeneous e-business environment. IBM provides a range of Linux
support for its IBM product lines. Every IBM
system is enabled to support Linux distributions when they become
available. The xSeries offers an option for preinstalled Linux
distributions. For the zSeries, you can choose between running Linux in
an LPAR or running it natively, making the zSeries the most versatile
Linux system. The pSeries will support native PowerPC Linux
distributions which are anticipated by first quarter 2001 for the pSeries
640 and third quarter 2001 for the pSeries 680. The iSeries will support
the native Linux kernel in an OS/400® partition. It is anticipated
that the iSeries implementation will be available in 2001.
IBM will continue to embrace Linux and work with the open source
community to extend its capabilities and to accelerate its adoption.

IBM e(logo)server Capacity Advantage
IBM Capacity Advantage gives you more control when it
comes to capacity planning to meet unpredictable and dynamic growth
needs. Take delivery of and pay for server and storage capacity in a
variety of ways.
-
Vertical Capacity Upgrade on Demand
is a fast, non-disruptive method of activating "extra" processor
capacity ... built directly into selected IBM
systems. With this announcement, IBM has extended this industry-leading
offering, previously available on the S/390®, to the zSeries, and
selected models of the iSeries and pSeries product lines. As your
capacity needs grow, you simply pay for the new processing power when you
decide to activate more processors.
-
Horizontal Capacity Upgrade on Demand
quickly respond to growing capacity requirements. Extra capacity,
in the form of additional servers and storage, is shipped in advance and
readily available to meet your business needs. IBM Horizontal Capacity
Upgrade on Demand is offered through IBM Global Financing and provides
convenient payment terms better aligned with your use of additional
capacity.
-
Storage Capacity Upgrade on Demand
reduce the risk of storage capacity planning with innovative
options. Take advantage of the benefits associated with several flexible
options including outsourcing from IBM Global Services or one of our
Storage Systems Alliance Partners. Through QuickShip and Custom
QuickShip you can rely on some of the world's fastest delivery times for
new storage orders to address increasing storage capacity needs.
Finally, you can use Enterprise Storage Server A Step-Ahead to get
extra storage that you pay for when it is used.
-
WLC
designed to support e-business reality, will be available for the
zSeries concurrent with the availability of z/OS. With WLC, customers
pay only for the software capacity that they need rather than based on
the size of their total system. They can grow a single workload at a
time, with ease and granularity. Customers can also add new workloads to
an existing machine reducing the cost of incremental growth, as compared
with current software pricing models.
The WLC model allows customers to define their exact software
requirements. Of course, in today's world, e-business peaks are likely
to occur. Our latest technology will permit these peaks, above the
defined requirements, so long as the average utilization over a rolling
four-hour period remains consistent with the defined requirement. The
new pricing model on zSeries allows for another, more immediate and more
granular access to additional hardware capacity. Specifically, customers
may reserve excess capacity on a machine. IBM refers to this reserve
excess capacity as White Space. White Space will not carry software
charges despite the fact that this capacity is real, online resource
just waiting to be enabled. Within minutes, a customer can reconfigure
their software requirements and transform the White Space into
transaction processing power.

System and Solution Testing:
IBM has by far the largest, most experienced system and solution
testing infrastructure in the industry, whose mission is to validate
solutions and applications before customer installation and to support
rapid deployment of reliable solutions in a heterogeneous IT
infrastructure. Experts:
-
Test product interoperability, scalability, and performance
-
Review how the solutions from business partners, systems integrators and
others fit
-
Benchmark, proof-of-concept, and test end-to-end solutions against
hardware, operating system, and software environments
Solution providers and customers can understand exactly what works in
particular environments and what doesn't.
For more information, refer to:
Solution Repository:
Solution repository, accessible via the Web, contains a consolidated
inventory of solutions and links to testing and integration centers,
solution assurance processes, service offerings, and reports based on
IBM, customer experience, and other sources. This rich repository of
real-world experiences can assure you that when you choose an IBM
system, you get proven, high-quality solutions that work. Your vital
e-business project won't become an application test-bed or pilot project.
For more information, refer to:
ClusterProven:
ClusterProven is a cross-server initiative where IBM cluster
technology and application software from business partners are tested
together based on a rigorous technical validation process.
IBM awards ClusterProven validation to solutions that prove total system
availability, scalability, and resiliency characteristics. Currently,
over 60 ClusterProven applications are validated from over 40 different
Solution Developer partners, including IBM software such as DB2, Lotus
Domino, and others.
For more information, refer to:
Solution Assurance Review (SAR):
SAR can assist companies in implementing e-business solutions more
rapidly, more predictably and with less risk. Through this process, a
SAR team is assembled to provide guidance on many aspects of the solution
including: product interoperability, implementation planning, systems
management, support, and education. The results are documented action
plans to mitigate and manage the risk, and identification of any
additional resources needed for a successful implementation.
New tools for IBM systems brings the process closer to the IBM
customer. You can now initiate a technical self-assessment of your IBM
with a new suite of Web-based tools, called
electronic Solution Assurance Reviews, or eSARs. eSAR tools help
identify potential risks and associated action plans for product
implementations. Based on the user's responses to a set of questions,
the tool provides a customized list of actions and recommendations.
For more information, refer to:
Solution Assessment:
IBM Global Services server assessments review the readiness of the
IT infrastructure and processes needed to support e-business. Four areas
that present the greatest customer challenges and exposures are:
-
Security
The IBM
product line is the foundation of an adaptable,
reliable, and secure business infrastructure, which provide the
technology solutions. The additional e-business demands on hardware and
software to ensure security and privacy are met by IBM Security and
Privacy Services. It is a program that addresses policies, processes,
and practices in support of your IT environment. The services are
designed to analyze key elements of your security program and controls,
propose recommendations for improvement, and help you understand the
Internet and security infrastructure requirements of the network.
-
Availability
While IBM
systems are inherently designed to be highly
available, true high availability means that your data, not just the
servers, is available when needed. The suite of IBM HA, beginning with
the Availability Assessment, assures that your IT systems server,
middleware, applications, and network, are up and running when needed.
The Availability Assessment includes an evaluation of the current IT
environment and produces a set of actionable recommendations to meet
availability goals.
-
Business Continuity and Risk Management
When technology is changed to accommodate the e-business
marketplace, you need to assess your risks and quantify the financial and
intangible impacts to your environment. Experienced IBM Global Services
professionals provide business impact and risk analysis services to help
determine your most critical processes, vital assets, and gravest
threats. Security, recovery, and availability strategies are prioritized
and a recommendation of cost-effective safeguards to mitigate risk and
prevent loss is made by the IBM team.
-
e-business Infrastructure
IBM Global Services e-business readiness assessments can guide a
customer in focusing on the critical areas of their e-business
infrastructure. A rapid risk-readiness assessment identifies the issues
and exposures that limit stability, redundancy, performance and
availability of the environment. Evaluating current techniques and
procedures with an objective and experienced IT professional, determines
where changes need to be made. A rapid assessment helps you ensure all
the technology in the infrastructure is fully functional and easily
managed.
Assessment support is available to identify a firm's specific e-business
infrastructure requirements for critical business applications.

IBM e(logo)server zSeries 900 Models 100 116, 1C1, and
1C9
The IBM zSeries 900 introduces an enterprise class
e-business server optimized for integration of business data and
transactions built to meet the demands of the explosive and unpredictable
landscape of e-business. The zSeries 64-bit architecture with
outstanding integrated features like Intelligent Resource Director (IRD)
are designed to facilitate information technology business transformation
and business-to-business and business-to-customer growth pressure.
zSeries 900 Product Line of Servers:
As a cluster of independent servers, zSeries is unmatched for
capacity and availability.
A new 20-processor module is the technology cornerstone for zSeries. The
new paradigm of a multisystem server combines up to 32 modules in a
Parallel Sysplex® environment supporting up to 640 processors (512 for
customer workload and up to 128 for system support) in a single cluster
for single image processing.
Using the S/390 Virtual Image Facility for Linux or z/VM, you can support
hundreds of Linux images running standalone e-business applications.
zSeries can support multiple applications and virtual servers on a single
system along with:
-
Application isolation and security
-
Real resource sharing
-
Optimized performance
You can upgrade from S/390 (9672) Generation 5 and 6 servers. S/390
operations are fully compatible with the new architecture
z/Architecture. S/390 ESA applications are fully compatible with
z/Architecture and ensure viability for S/390 information assets and
S/390 technology.
Architected for Freedom Satisfies Maximum Demands:
With z/Architecture, the zSeries enterprise-class e-business server
is optimized for integration, data, and transactions. z/Architecture,
from the beginning, was imbedded with the full 64-bit infrastructure. It
begins unchaining processor and I/O constraints leading to e-business,
on-demand performance scaling.
zSeries clustering technology with Workload Manager in z/OS provides
intelligent resource sharing of processors and self-managing I/O. The
zSeries product line, Workload Manager, and virtual server enhancements
reduce your cost of computing.
With zSeries hardware and z/OS operating system comes a new IBM
Capacity Advantage offering, Workload Pricing. Workload Pricing is
designed to support e-business reality. Workload License Charges (WLC)
for zSeries allows customers to pay only for the software capacity that
they need, regardless of system size. They can grow a single workload at
a time, with ease and granularity. Customers can also add new workloads
to an existing machine with a reduced cost of incremental growth.
Performance:
z/Architecture enables a new standard of server performance. CMOS
copper technology enhancements and more processors support an increase in
processing power.
The I/O subsystem is enhanced by using FICON and associated storage
devices to expand the bandwidth for larger and quicker data movement into
the server. New coupling links in the architecture enable you to exploit
the advantage of the leading clustering solution in the industry
Parallel Sysplex without limitations.
IBM z/OS: An Operating System Solution for the Future
IBM z/OS, the operating system for the zSeries, provides zSeries 64-bit
support and Intelligent Resource Director (IRD). Flexibility and
integration features of the S/390 platform are extended with dynamic
balancing of logical partitions based on business policy. Resources are
dynamically managed across partitions to meet the business priorities of
users, tasks, and workloads.
A new system technology, Managed System Infrastructure for Setup (msys
for Setup), provides a new approach for installing and configuring z/OS
products. The first implementation is msys for Setup to facilitate the
Parallel Sysplex environment.
The new IBM License Manager helps determine whether or not software
products execute within the appropriate licensed terms and conditions.
It also assists with software license management and is the technical
basis for WLC. With the self-managing flexibility of z/OS, you only pay
for the computing resources you need.
z/OS is available on the following servers:
-
