New Age Applications with Linux

IBM is committed to addressing the e-business needs:

IBM embraces Linux, the fast growing, cross-platform operating system. IBM will provide Linux-enabled hardware, middleware, services/support offerings, and a Linux application development environment to further assist you with the development and deployment of applications in today's heterogeneous e-business environment. IBM provides a range of Linux support for its IBM e(logo)server product lines. Every IBM e(logo)server system is enabled to support Linux distributions when they become available. The xSeries offers an option for preinstalled Linux distributions. For the zSeries, you can choose between running Linux in an LPAR or running it natively, making the zSeries the most versatile Linux system. The pSeries will support native PowerPC Linux distributions which are anticipated by first quarter 2001 for the pSeries 640 and third quarter 2001 for the pSeries 680. The iSeries will support the native Linux kernel in an OS/400® partition. It is anticipated that the iSeries implementation will be available in 2001.

IBM will continue to embrace Linux and work with the open source community to extend its capabilities and to accelerate its adoption.

VisualAge® for Java 3.5 enables application development on Linux (Intel-based clients) and deployment on Linux and other native server operating systems.

Customers can also add new workloads to an existing machine reducing the cost of incremental growth, as compared with current software pricing models.

    The WLC model allows customers to define their exact software requirements. Of course, in today's world, e-business peaks are likely to occur. Our latest technology will permit these peaks, above the defined requirements, so long as the average utilization over a rolling four-hour period remains consistent with the defined requirement. The new pricing model on zSeries allows for another, more immediate and more granular access to additional hardware capacity. Specifically, customers may reserve excess capacity on a machine. IBM refers to this reserve excess capacity as White Space. White Space will not carry software charges despite the fact that this capacity is real, online resource — just waiting to be enabled. This offering allows customers to expand the technology investment in their database servers with lower cost application servers and leverage UNIX know-how. Included are server based local emulator applications and browser based Linux and Java applications. It runs on the pSeries server running DB2 Universal Database on AIX 4.3.3 as the database server and multiple xSeries servers optimized to run Linux as mySAP.com application servers.

IBM Solutions for Ariba SupplierLive

IBM Solutions for Ariba SupplierLive is a comprehensive, scalable offering, optimized for the IBM e(logo)server iSeries and xSeries, providing a full-function business to business e-commerce solution. e-commerce sites that automatically connect to multiple buyers and marketplaces can be built using Java applications.

The creation of electronic catalogs for uploading to Ariba Commerce Services Network (ACSN) can decrease cycle time, reduce errors, and improve customer satisfaction. Buyers can "punchout" and work directly on supplier's Web sites, saving resource, preserving unique branding, corporate messaging, and Web site layout. Buyer-specific catalogs that cater to existing relationships can be created.

The offering provides all the components for a complete solution, including hardware, application software and middleware, services, support, and financing. It offers easy access to multiple Ariba procurement systems and e-marketplaces from a single platform through WebSphere Commerce Suite and DB2 Universal Database.

Logility Voyager

This supply chain application provides customer-facing views into the distribution center for customers, suppliers, and transportation. It consists of an Internet-based suite of business-to-business collaborative commerce applications for value chain strategy, demand planning, inventory planning, replenishment planning, and demand chain Voyager modules. It provides a global view into supply chain execution processes including customer order status, purchase order payment status, load tendering, and freight payment.

Engage also includes complete customer service and support tracking of customer reported events which can be integrated with sales information for a single customer view. This solution provides all the tools to integrate the Web as well as personal information for a consistent view of the customer across the organization. Engage is easy to implement and use, and can be tailored to meet company specific needs without programming. Customers can phase in implementation of different Engage capabilities based on their priorities.
