Description
High-Performance Server Subsystems
The xSeries 340 is a high-throughput, two-way, SMP-capable network server
with excellent scalability when adding memory and a second processor. It
incorporates a powerful 1 GHz Pentium III processor with 256 KB advanced
transfer L2 cache. The advanced transfer cache is the result of a new
"backside bus" that is 256 bits wide. Four times wider than the previous
bus, the quad-wide cache line can transfer four 64-bit cache line
segments at one time to deliver full-speed capability.
Two Intel® Pentium III connectors are standard on the system board to
support installation of a second processor. High-speed, 133 MHz SDRAM is
optimized for 133 MHz processor-to-memory subsystem performance. The
xSeries 340 uses the ServerWorks ServerSet III LE (CNB3.0LE) chipset to
maximize throughput from processors to memory, and to the 64-bit and
32-bit PCI buses.

Planning Information
Customer Responsibilities
xSeries 340:
The xSeries 340 is designated as customer setup. Customer setup
instructions are shipped with the system.
Configuration Information
Bay Configuration:
The xSeries 340 contains seven standard drive bays. The top bay on the
left contains the standard 3.5-inch, slim-high diskette drive, the bay
beneath contains the standard CD-ROM drive. Three 3.5-inch, slim-high,
hot-swap bays in the center of the server are ready for various supported
hot-swap drive option installation. Two 5.25-3.5-inch, half-high bays on
the left support either tape backup or an optional Netfinity 3-Pack
Ultra160 Hot-Swap Expansion Kit.
The 24x-10x IDE CD-ROM is cabled directly to the IDE port.
Cabling Standard Non-RAID Configurations:
The xSeries 340 contains a DASD backplane supporting three hot-swap,
SCA-2-compliant drive bays. The backplane is connected to one of the
internal connectors of the integrated Ultra160 SCSI controller through a
16-bit LVD SCSI cable.
Additional Cabling Alternatives:
xSeries 340 support two storage alternatives in the two 5.25-inch
half-high media bays.
-
An optional Netfinity 3-Pack Ultra160 Hot-Swap Expansion Kit can be
installed to provide additional internal HDD storage capacity. Included
with this option is a 16-bit LVD SCSI cable that can be attached from the
3-Pack Ultra160 Hot-Swap backplane to the second connector of the
Ultra160 SCSI controller or through the use of a repeater card, included
with the option, it can be cabled directly to the standard backplane.
-
A full-height DLT tape backup can be supported by connecting the single
drop SCSI cable, included with the server, to the open connector of the
integrated Ultra160 SCSI controller. If two SCSI devices are required, a
two drop SCSI cable available in the Netfinity Media Bay Conversion Kit
(10K2340) must be ordered to connect these devices to the Ultra160 SCSI
controller.
In configurations where external SCSI device attachment is required, a
supported SCSI adapter must be installed.
Rack Installations:
xSeries 340 3 U, rack-drawer models are designed to be installed in a
19-inch rack cabinet designed for 26-inch deep devices, such as the
Netfinity Rack or Netfinity NetBAY22.
If using a non-IBM rack, the cabinet must meet the EIA-310-D standards
with a depth of at least 28 inches. Also, adequate space (approximately
two inches for the front bezel and one inch for air flow) must be
maintained from the slide assembly to the front door of the rack cabinet
to allow sufficient space for the door to close and provide adequate air
flow.
Supported Memory Options:
The following memory options are supported:
-
Netfinity 128 MB 133 MHz SDRAM ECC RDIMM II (33L3123)
-
Netfinity 256 MB 133 MHz SDRAM ECC RDIMM II (33L3125)
-
Netfinity 512 MB 133 MHz SDRAM ECC RDIMM II (33L3127)
-
Netfinity 1 GB 133 MHz SDRAM ECC RDIMM II (33L3129)
The xSeries 1 GHz Upgrade with 133 FSB and 256 KB Advanced Transfer Cache
Pentium III Processor (19K4640) option is supported for SMP upgrades in
the announced model.
Power Considerations:
The xSeries 340 includes a standard 270-Watt hot-swap power supply. This
power supply is capable of providing sufficient power to run the server.
A 270 W Hot-Swap Redundant Power Supply is optionally available to
support redundancy.
Cable Orders:
The 10/100 Mbps, full duplex, Ethernet PCI controller, standard with
xSeries 340, is connected directly to a RJ-45 connector. The RJ-45
connector provides a 10BaseT or 100Base-TX interface for connecting
twisted-pair cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with
the server. To connect the Ethernet controller to a repeater or switch,
use an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable with RJ-45 connectors at both
ends. For 100 Mbps operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For
10 Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used.
There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for system
power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections.
Installability:
The xSeries 340 requires about 20 minutes for installation.
Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system.
Additional time is required to install an operating system, additional
adapters, or features.

Non-IBM Parts Support
Warranty Service:
PSG is now shipping IBM machines with selected non-IBM parts that
contain an IBM Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) part number label. These
parts, parts with an IBM FRU label, are to be serviced during the IBM
machine warranty period. PSG is covering the service on these selected
non-IBM parts as an accommodation to their customers, and normal warranty
service procedures for the IBM machine apply. Details on how to do so
are covered in more detail, below.
Warranty Service Upgrades and Maintenance Services:
Under certain conditions, IBM Integrated Technology Services (ITS)
provides selected non-IBM parts at no additional charge for PSG machines
that are covered under a warranty service upgrade or maintenance
services.
Non-IBM Parts Support:
IBM Service will provide hardware problem determination on non-IBM
parts (adapter cards, PCMCIA cards, disk drives, memory, and so forth),
installed within IBM systems covered under IBM's Warranty Service
Upgrade, or IBM's Maintenance Services, and provide the labor to replace
the failing parts at no additional charge. If IBM has Technical Service
Agreements (TSA) with the manufacturers of the failing part, or if the
failing part is an accommodations part (a part with an IBM FRU label),
IBM may also source and replace the failing parts at no additional
charge. For all other non-IBM parts, the customers are responsible for
sourcing the parts, and installation labor will be provided at no
additional charge, if the machine is covered under an IBM Warranty
Service Upgrade or IBM Maintenance Services.
If, during the course of service calls, it is suspected that non-IBM
parts are defective and the parts do not have an IBM FRU part number
label, SSRs/CSRs should call the appropriate support center for advice.
The support center, after performing RETAIN® searches, will be able to
advise whether the non-IBM parts are supported by TSAs (Technical
Services Agreement) or not. The support center will also inform the
SSRs/CSRs of any contract upgrades the customers may have purchased along
with any special procedures associated with the upgrades, and how to
handle the service calls when sourcing of the non-IBM part is the
customers' responsibility.
If the non-IBM parts are covered by TSAs and the machines are under
Warranty Service Upgrades or MA, SSRs/CSRs should replace the defective
non-IBM parts with "like for like" parts, meaning that the SSRs/CSRs
should always replace the non-IBM parts with the same non-IBM parts they
find in the machine. Non-IBM parts should never be replaced with IBM
parts, unless the customers have a specific contract with IBM to perform
such work or the SSRs/CSRs are directed by the support center technical
representative or manager to do so. In these relatively rare instances,
the call from CAD should contain specific instructions and contract
numbers in the TIB and/or CAD comments sections, detailing any upgrade
procedures, and the SSR/CSR should note something to the effect of
"upgraded to IBM part per support center" in the QSAR's comments.
If the IBM support center informs the SSRs/CSRs that the non-IBM parts
are not covered by IBM TSAs, and there are no IBM FRU labels, and the
SSRs/CSRs are unsure of the customers warranty status (base warranty
versus warranty upgrade) or Maintenance Services Agreement, the SSRs/CSRs
should inform the customers that the cause of the machine's failure is
due to non-IBM parts that are not supported, and the call is potentially
billable. If customers source the parts, SSRs/CSRs will replace the
defective non-IBM part but the call is potentially billable. SSRs/CSRs
should mark their QSAR potentially billable and leave an HSD.
