WebSphere Cast Iron Live is a multi-tenant cloud
service offering which consists of both web application programming
interface (API) services and integration services. These services
enable companies to orchestrate and create new web APIs, secure and
manage the web APIs, gain business insight with analytics, socialize
the web APIs in communities, and quickly integrate their cloud services
with on-premise applications and enterprise systems.
Web API services
Markets are changing faster than ever. Companies are dealing with
a shortage of skilled resources, time, and money to implement and
maintain critical business applications that allow them to reach new
channels and maintain a competitive edge, especially with the multitude
of devices available today. Additionally, integration with new and
existing partners is taking too long. To help resolve these challenges,
and sometimes by pure partner pressures, companies are externalizing
core service as web APIs. Web APIs are a business's public persona.
They allow businesses to quickly integrate with multiple partners
in a simplified and standard way. They also allow companies to tap
into the large external and internal developer pools. These developers
have innovative business ideas that can fill gaps the company did
not have the time or the resources to cover. This creates a mutually
beneficial partnership and fundamentally changes how the company does
business. For the externalization of services as web APIs, a web API
management solution can be the key to success by providing easy assembly
of new APIs, enabling security, providing management and insight,
and fostering community socialization.
Today, IBM is introducing web API services with IBM® WebSphere Cast Iron Live V6.2. The web API services provide capabilities
for web API assembly and for securing and scaling the web APIs, analytics
for business operations, DevOps for application developers, and a
developer portal to socialize the APIs.
Web API services key benefits
Companies externalizing their services as web APIs are looking
for a solution that provides a complete set of web API management
capabilities in a single solution. WebSphere Cast
Iron Live provides a complete set of web API capabilities and
can offer these key benefits:
- Rapid API assembly: Web API assembly capabilities are provided
to allow rapid creation of new APIs from existing business assets
or cloud services through configuration.
- Robust security and scalability: Leveraging IBM's industry-leading
security expertise, web APIs can be configured for authentication
with Basic Auth and API keys. In addition the web APIs are protected
against a multitude of web threats. Robust scalability of the web
APIs is achieved through configurations of the caching mechanisms
and quota management.
- Empowerment for change and growth: Web APIs are natural
sources of analytic data, from how people are purchasing or leveraging
a company's products or services to how application developers are
using the web APIs. IBM provides the business insight
with the analytics to empower you to change and grow your business.
- Nurturing innovation: With a robust developer community
to promote and market the company's web APIs, a company can attract
more partners and innovative application developers, both internally
and externally, who develop applications that expand a business's
brand loyalty, open new channels of business, and can fundamentally
change the way you do business.
Integration services
As the popularity of Software as a Service (SaaS) and cloud applications
grows, businesses face hurdles in expanding department-level solutions
for reducing cost and increasing the effectiveness of specific employee
teams, while supporting the wider enterprise. On a daily basis, your
employees require access to various systems and applications that
are critical to doing their job. These applications may include cloud
applications and on-premise systems and applications. It is critical
that these applications and systems are integrated and function seamlessly,
providing users with the latest information. In addition, many organizations
are adopting mobile solutions to reach out to newer markets and clients
more pervasively.
For these types of hybrid environments, WebSphere Cast
Iron integration provides trusted and rapid cloud application
integration to the on-premise system and applications. WebSphere Cast Iron integration is available in three flexible and rapid
deployment form-factors:
- Multi-tenant cloud - WebSphere Cast Iron Live Integration
Services
- Virtual appliance - WebSphere Cast Iron Hypervisor Edition
- Physical appliance - WebSphere DataPower® Cast
Iron Appliance XH40
A related product, WebSphere Cast Iron Express®, is a business-user-friendly, self-service cloud offering that allows
you to rapidly connect and integrate data between your Salesforce.com
applications and other applications.

Today's dynamic business environments and economic uncertainty
mean organizations must work smarter to remain competitive and respond
to changing demands for better and newer products and services at
lower costs. Working smarter means your business needs the agility
to take advantage of new revenue opportunities and address competitive
threats. You must be able to optimize costs by slashing operational
and maintenance expenses while increasing efficiency.
For many businesses, a primary barrier to business agility and
cost optimization is IT complexity. To achieve business goals, IT
must be able to quickly and easily deliver on the needs of the business
while supporting innovation.
WebSphere Cast Iron Live is a multi-tenant cloud
service offering which consists of both web API services and integration
services. These services enable companies to quickly orchestrate and
create new web APIs, secure and manage the web APIs, gain business
insight with analytics, socialize the web APIs in communities, and
integrate their cloud services with on-premise applications and enterprise
systems.
Web API services
IBM introduces web API services with WebSphere Cast Iron Live V6.2. The web API services provide the capabilities
needed to externalize your services as web APIs and manage them economically.
WebSphere Cast Iron Live Web API Services delivers
the following sets of capabilities:
- API assembly: Through a simple user interface (UI), you
can build and expose APIs. Users are able to expose Representational
State Transfer (REST) APIs for their on-premise endpoints such as
databases or FTP. They also are able bring data from multiple endpoints,
aggregate them, and expose them as a new REST API, all through simple
configuration and no coding.
- Security and scalability: Web API services ensure your
enterprise is protected by providing support for both Transport Layer
Security (TSL) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), which protects the
data in transit. With visibility into OAuth flows, traffic can be
controlled through quotas. Configurations for quota management of
API requests include transaction rate and data quantity. Additional
scalability can be achieved through the configuration of the caching
of the API HTTP responses.
- Business analytics: Through robust business analytics,
you can understand how the API is being used, which application developer
has the most active applications, and what devices are sending the
most traffic through the API. This type of information allows you
to tailor your API and business to support the higher-priority channels.
- Developer and community management: Attracting, on-boarding,
and nurturing of application developers and the application developer
community becomes extremely important to the success of a web API
program. The web API services provide for quick self-service developer
on-boarding with induction into your developer community. A developer
portal is provided which can be branded to a company's website. The
developer portal provides documentation of the API and links to samples.
Developers can communicate and stay up to date through integrated
social media avenues.
Integration services
WebSphere Cast Iron Live integration enables you
to connect the hybrid world of cloud and on-premise applications within
days and achieve lower cost and higher return on investment in cloud
and SaaS models. WebSphere Cast Iron Live Integration
Services allows you to design, run, and manage integrations in the
cloud and mobile application developers can access data from various
application data sources whether it’s in the cloud or on-premise.

Install
Install is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed.
An install is an installed copy of the program on a physical or virtual
disk made available to be executed on a computer. Licensee must obtain
an entitlement for each install of the program.
Application Instance
Application Instance is a unit of measure by which the Program
can be licensed. An entitlement is required for each instance of an
application connected to or managed by the Program. An application
in a test, development, staging, or production environment is each
considered to be a separate instance of the application and each must
have an entitlement. As well, multiple application instances in a
single environment are each considered to be separate instances of
the application and each must have an entitlement.
Million Server Calls (MSCs)
Million Server Calls (MSCs) is a unit of measure by which the IBM SaaS
can be obtained. MSCs are one (1) million server calls. A server
call is data passed to and processed by IBM SaaS as a result of a tagged
event, initiated by a tracked visitor for one Client ID. A server
call processed by different Client IDs will be counted as a unique
server call for each unique Client ID. A Client ID separates and/or
controls access rights to data in the IBM SaaS which may encompass processed
data from one or more client websites. Sufficient entitlements must
be obtained to cover the number of MSCs used during the measurement
period specified in a Proof of Entitlement (PoE) or Transaction Document.

IT system security involves protecting systems and information
through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from
within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in
information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result
in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive
approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered
completely secure and no single product or security measure can be
completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems
and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach,
which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures,
and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.
IBM does not warrant that systems and products
are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
