Overview
Bottom rule

IBM Systems Director VMControl V2.4 simplifies workload management for rapidly deploying virtual appliances to create virtual servers that are configured with the operating system and software applications on demand. It also enables virtualization administrators to group resources into system pools, which enable them to centrally manage and control the different workloads in their virtualized environment. VMControl manages virtual appliances that use the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) for packaging, delivery, and deployment of preconfigured, ready-to-run solutions. Virtualization platforms supported include IBM Power Systems™ with PowerVM™, IBM System x with KVM, VMware, or Hyper-V, and IBM System z® with z/VM® or zEnterprise™.

IBM Systems Director VMControl is available in two editions: Express® and Enterprise. VMControl Express Edition aims to deliver simplified management, which can mean faster time-to-solution in the event of a problem, and an accelerated, more flexible response to changing business goals and strategies. VMControl Enterprise Edition adds the ability to import, capture, and deploy virtual appliances quickly and easily, with centralized management of virtual appliance assets, and provides a workload-optimized approach to computing, by enabling the management of system pools.

Licenses for IBM Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition for IBM x86, V2.4 include one or three years of Software Subscription and Support. Software Subscription and Support renewals for all features are aligned through Passport Advantage® Express or Passport Advantage, reducing the administrative burden of keeping your Subscription and Support up to date.

Eligible software products, offered and selected during the ordering process with each hardware system, are enabled for electronic download for the system unit for which the product was ordered. Optionally, software and license-only orders can be created for these products based on existing supported hardware system units in your business environment. Offerings included in this announcement are available exclusively by electronic download.

IBM Systems Director VMControl V2.4

The features included with VMControl V2.4 provide a suite of management tasks for managing virtual resources and provisioning virtual images with dynamic server and storage assets. VMControl V2.4 provides integrated virtual server, image, and system pool management for IBM System x servers running with the KVM hypervisor on RHEL 6.x.

IBM Systems Director VMControl V2.4 offers the following new enhancements:

VMControl Express Edition (delivered with IBM Systems Director V6.3)

  • Enhanced monitoring of the virtualized environment providing administrators with the metrics needed to manage the use of both virtual and physical resources across all supported hypervisor environments, including storage and network resources.
  • The ability to suspend (hibernate) and resume a virtual server on KVM platforms.
  • Support for the KVM virtualization environment including the ability to create, edit, delete, and relocate virtual servers.

VMControl Enterprise Edition

  • Support for Windows™ and Linux™ virtual appliances deployable to a KVM virtualization platform hosted on IBM System x and BladeCenter® servers, including the ability to manage virtual images within a repository hosted on a file server (NFS) or SAN storage controller.
  • Support for deployment and capture of virtual appliances requiring more than one virtual disk to be provisioned. All virtual disks specified in the OVF descriptor will be provisioned during deployment.
  • Continued interoperability with the Tivoli® Provisioning Manager Images product to provide image management for VMware and Hyper-V platforms, including P2V (physical to virtual) and V2V (virtual to virtual) migration support to a KVM virtualization platform.
  • The ability to define pools of storage with differing qualities of service (RAID levels) into storage system pools, simplifying the management of storage.
  • Host failure detection, remote virtual server restart for KVM platforms, and the ability to suspend (hibernate) and resume a workload on KVM platform.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be requested at

Product positioning
Bottom rule

IBM's flexible and dynamic infrastructure offers a broad set of virtualization technologies to help improve service and management, mask complexities, reduce operational costs, and maximize asset utilization.

IBM Systems Director VMControl V2.4 supports the OVF open standard from Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) to enable a single unified view of all virtual appliances and easy deployment of new virtual servers based on virtual appliances.

IBM Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition for IBM x86 manages the life cycle of virtual appliances. It captures information from active systems and stores the information in reusable virtual appliances. IBM Systems Director VMControl V2.4 also allows the import of virtual appliances from external sources (such as a vendor's website).

IBM Systems Director VMControl provides image management for:

  • KVM images on System x servers
  • AIX®, IBM i, and Linux images on Power Systems
  • z/VM images on IBM System z

IBM Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition V2.4 exemplifies the strategy for enabling management simplification and automation with IBM Systems Director V6.3. IBM Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition V2.4 can improve the total cost of ownership and decrease management costs by eliminating the need to maintain multiple tools and improving the utilization of existing IT resources through virtualization. Virtualization platforms supported include IBM System x servers with KVM, VMware, or Hyper-V, IBM Power Systems with PowerVM, and IBM System z servers with z/VM.

Key benefits provided by Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition include:

  • A simple interface and set of management tasks are provided to manage the life cycle and capacity of one or more system pools. Both new systems and the remaining capacity of existing systems in your data center can be added and managed as part of a pool.
  • System pool total aggregate capacity and utilization can be monitored and viewed in the IBM Systems Director dashboard as a new special type of system, eliminating the need to monitor the individual member systems.
  • Open standard OVF images can be deployed and dynamically placed on the most appropriate resources within the pool. Consideration for compatibility, workload capacity, and workload resilience are all used to dynamically determine the best placement, removing management complexity from the administrator.
  • Storage can be assigned to and associated with a system pool, allowing for dynamic provisioning and enablement for virtual server mobility operations.
  • Running virtual machines can be moved between the member systems within the pool with no disruption to the running workloads. Dynamic placement services are leveraged to help determine the target system, considering compatibility, workload capacity, and the workload resilience goals.
  • Increased availability and resilience can be provided on a workload-by-workload basis. When specified, Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition monitors the individual member system for specific events that allow system failures to be predicted and used to trigger the evacuation of the system.
  • Automation of management actions is configurable, allowing for incremental levels of sophistication on a per-workload basis. In all cases, the actions that are automatically performed by Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition are recorded within the IBM Systems Director Event Log.
