Description
Bottom rule

IBM Scale Out Network Attached Storage (SONAS) Software is a scale-out Network Attached Storage (NAS) software system designed to manage vast repositories of information. SONAS Software is preloaded and licensed on each node in the IBM SONAS hardware system, including:

  • Interface Nodes (2851-SI1 or 2851-SI2)
  • Storage Nodes (2851-SS1 or 2851-SS2)

SONAS Software is capable of interoperating with and providing file serving capabilities to any client computer system supporting industry standard network file protocols, including:

  • Network File System (NFS) V2 and V3 (including z/OS® NFS client support)
  • Microsoft Common Internet File System (CIFS)
  • File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
  • Hyper Text Transmission Protocol (HTTP)
  • Secure Copy Protocol (SCP)

Users accessing data residing in the SONAS system can be authenticated against an external user directory service, such as Microsoft Active Directory (AD) or a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server.

Each file systems supports up to 256 snapshots. Each snapshot copy represents a point-in-time copy of the file system, from which prior copies of individual files or directories can be accessed and restored. Microsoft Windows™ users can access prior snapshot copies via the Previous Copies tab on the Windows file properties dialog box.

Quotas can be used to limit the number of files created or amount of space consumed by an individual user, groups, or filesets. A fileset is a portion of the file system directory tree. Both soft quotas and hard quotas are supported.

SONAS Software:

  • Provides a unified command line interface for configuring, administrating, and monitoring the system, and a browser-based GUI. A client side application is not required in order to configure, monitor, or manage the system. The GUI includes a System Health Center, which monitors the overall health of the SONAS system and displays that information in a topology view allowing quick identification when hardware problems occur in the system. The System Health Center includes a centralized alert log to capture all the critical software and hardware failures within the system. The alerts within the alert log can be filtered by a variety of criteria. In addition to the alert log, the system Health Center also includes a centralized system log. All system logs from all hardware components (including Interface Nodes, Storage Nodes, storage controllers, InfiniBand switches, and Ethernet switches) are gathered in a centralized system log on the SONAS Management Node. The events in the centralized system log can be filtered by a variety of criteria to allow easy viewing of information of particular interest.
  • Provides call home capability. When hardware failure occurs within a SONAS system, the software gathers diagnosis data and calls home to IBM via a secure web connection to open a problem reporting record (PMR) in the IBM Problem Reporting System (RETAIN®).
  • Includes Remote Support capability. IBM Product Field Engineers and service personnel can remotely diagnose problems inside the system via a broadband connection to the system, if approved and authorized by you. The approval and authorization is on an individual connection instance basis, meaning you must approve and authorize each connection to the system.
  • Includes a threshold notification facility allowing you to set up thresholds regarding specific operating parameters within the system, and to be notified via email or SNMP alerts when those thresholds are exceeded.
  • Has the capability to have the nodes in a SONAS system synchronize time with an external time server via the Network Time Protocol (NTP).

SONAS 1.3.0 adds the following new features and functions:

  • IBM Active Cloud Engine
  • New "XIV-Like" Graphical User Interface
  • Fileset level snapshots
  • Snapshot management
  • File clones
  • Server Message Block (2.0) support
  • Asynchronous Replication performance improvements
  • Integrated Management Node

IBM Active Cloud Engine - WAN Caching Extensions

SONAS 1.3.0 introduces a new feature called IBM Active Cloud Engine. This new feature provides for Wide Area Network (WAN) caching of data across geographically distributed SONAS systems. A remote SONAS system can have a cached copy of a fileset (cache fileset) residing in another SONAS system (the home fileset). Users may access the files in the cache fileset on the remote SONAS system using normal network file protocols, such as CIFS and NFS. When the cache fileset is first accessed, an initial handshake between home and cache is done, after which the users at the cache site will see the entire contents of the home fileset as though they are local to the cache site, regardless of the state of the files on the cache site. As files are accessed in the cache fileset, the file data is copied from the home fileset to the cached fileset. On a cache hit (where the file being accessed is already in the cache fileset), the data in cache is returned to applications providing local cache performance. Upon repeated access to files within the cache fileset, a validation is performed against the reference version in the home fileset. This ensures no data changes have been made that would cause the cache fileset to present "stale" data. The cached fileset may be operated in different modes such as read-only, (indicating it is a read-only copy of the home fileset) or single-writer mode (indicating the files and directories in the cached fileset may be created, deleted and updated). In single-writer mode, the updates in the cache fileset are asynchronously pushed back to the home fileset either continuously or periodically. The data being pushed from cache to home site contains only delta changes, making the most efficient use of the network bandwidth.

IBM Active Cloud Engine provides facilities for:

  • Pre-population of the cache fileset based on policies defined by the storage administrator
  • Operation in disconnected mode where the remote SONAS system and home SONAS system can not communicate with each other
  • Eviction of data from the cache fileset based on fileset quotas
  • Control of the async delay in sending updates from the remote SONAS system back to the home fileset

The primary purpose of the IBM Active Cloud Engine is to provide WAN caching of data across geographically distributed SONAS systems.

New "XIV-like" Graphical User Interface (GUI)

SONAS 1.3.0 introduces a new GUI modelled after the GUI of the IBM XIV® storage system and also similar to the IBM Storwize® V7000 GUI. The new GUI has improved usability, better navigation, performance monitoring, configuration options for anti-virus, Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) and Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) backup, new policy editors, added GUI support for system configuration settings, such as LDAP or Active Directory, and many other new features.

Fileset level snapshots

SONAS 1.3.0 introduces fileset level snapshots. In addition to being able to take 256 snapshots at the file system level, SONAS allows up to 256 snapshots of a fileset, which is a portion of the file system directory tree. Fileset level snapshots provide the storage administrator with finer level granularity, allowing the storage administrator to customize the creation and deletion of snapshot to the level of data protection needed by the data residing within a portion of the file system (a fileset) as oppose to the entire file system.

Snapshot management

SONAS 1.3.0 introduces snapshot management. Snapshot management is a set of facilities for managing the automatic creation and deletion of both file system snapshots and fileset level snapshots based on administrator defined rules. The snapshot rules allow the specification of the frequency that snapshots are to be taken (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly), when they should be taken (minute of the hour, hours of the day, days of the week or month, weeks of the month, etc.) and how many snapshot of a particular frequency (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly) should be retained. The purpose of this facility is to provide comprehensive capabilities for the automatic creation and deletion of snapshots based on administrator defined rules.

File clones

SONAS 1.3.0 introduces the capability to create clones of files. Initially, the file clone is an identical copy of the original file. It is a space-efficient copy in that it shares the same data blocks as the original parent file. As data is written to the clone, new data blocks are allocated for the new data. Clones of files can be used for a variety of purposes including test and development purposes, and for cloning files that represent virtual machine (VM) operating system (OS) images.

Asynchronous replication performance improvements

SONAS 1.3.0 introduces new options to the asynchronous replication feature that improve performance of asynchronously replicating a file system from a source SONAS system to a file system on a target SONAS system. These new options include:

  • The ability of have multiple resync processes running in parallel on each interface node to drive higher throughput
  • The choice of a faster Secure shell (SSH) cipher to improve performance for data moving over the network
  • Software compression option to reduce the amount of data to be sent over the network

Server Message Block (SMB ) 2.0 support

SONAS 1.3.0 supports version 2.0 of the Microsoft Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. This can improve the performance of Windows CIFS clients for certain workloads because of the improved efficiency, reduced complexity and less "chattiness" of the SMB 2.0 protocol over the SMB 1.0 protocol. Recent Windows operating systems, such as Windows Vista and Windows 7, will prefer SMB 2.0 over SMB 1.0 when negotiating the level of the file protocol when communicating with a CIFS file server such as SONAS.

Integrated Management Node

SONAS 1.3.0 introduces the integrated management node feature. This feature allows the management functionality of SONAS, which provides both the GUI and the command line interface (CLI), to run on two of the interface nodes in a SONAS system, eliminating the need for a physically separate management node. The first interface node in a SONAS 1.3.0 system is designated as serving the role of the primary/active management server and the second interface node in a SONAS system is serving the role of the secondary/passive management server.

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Technical Advisor support will be provided during the warranty period. This SONAS support will be delivered remotely and will include a documented support plan, coordinated problem management, reporting on client's hardware inventories and microcode levels, and consultation regarding SONAS microcode updates. The Technical Advisor will conduct a Welcome Call with the client and provide a statement of work for this support.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

http://www.ibm.com/support/handbook

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.

While your Software Subscription and Support is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
