Product positioning
Bottom rule

IBM Systems Director Network Control V1.3 provides network management integrated into the server and storage management capabilities of IBM Systems Director, which is designed to help reduce the cost of managing physical and virtualized environments by using a single integrated management product.

IBM Systems Director Network Control manages network adapters and switches enhanced with storage fabric management for IBM network switches, both Ethernet and FCoCEE. IBM Systems Director Network Control gives users the ability to leverage common tools across a single switch or many switches, which can improve productivity and potentially reduce costs.

IBM Tivoli® Network Manager and OMNIbus provide additional functions beyond those provided in IBM Systems Director in event management root cause analysis and device discovery. For multivendor networks, the Tivoli Network Manager solution may be a more appropriate offering. Additional benefits of Tivoli Network Manager include:

  • Tivoli Common Reporting (if the client has other Tivoli tools)
  • Consolidated end-to-end view across the infrastructure (including server, storage, and network)
  • Discovery, modelling, and visualization of layer 1-3 networks, including wireline/wireless technologies (LAN, RAN, and WAN)
  • Integrated discovery, event and fault, performance, and change management
  • Advanced predictive and analytical capabilities to reduce service impact and minimize downtime
  • Comprehensive service management portfolio
  • Integration to third-party management systems
  • Integration supporting workflow automation

Systems Director with Storage Control provides clients a single user interface to a management system deployed on a single management server. This solution is most applicable to mid-sized and larger clients wanting to do integrated management across their server and storage environment with small teams. This is particularly valuable to administration teams that have responsibility across both the server and storage infrastructures of their companies.

Systems Director can be used with a full Tivoli Productivity Center (TPC) deployment. It integrates with TPC in a similar way as with Storage Control. This would provide clients with the deep storage management capability available from TPC that storage administrators need with a separate GUI provided by the TPC environment while still gaining the integration through Systems Director for the storage devices.

While this can be deployed on a single server, two servers is recommended. This type of environment would be more appropriate for larger IT administration groups that have deep storage management administration teams along with the need to integrate management across their storage and server infrastructure.

Server

Server is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A server is a physical computer that is comprised of processing units, memory, and input/output capabilities and that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications for one or more users or Client Devices. Where racks, blade enclosures, or other similar equipment is being employed, each separable physical device (for example, a blade or a rack-mounted device) that has the required components is considered itself a separate server. For the purpose of server-based licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements for each server that is made available to the program, regardless of the number of processor cores and partitions in the server or the number of copies of the program on the server.

A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processor cores or partitions in the server on which the program runs.

Switch

A switch is the unit of measure by which a portion of this program is licensed. A switch is a networking device that processes and routes information between different connections on the ports of the switch.

A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for each switch being managed by the program regardless of the number of line cards or ports in the switch.

IBM Systems Director Network Control

IBM Systems Director Network Control uses per server and per switch charging metrics. A server license is required for the machine running the IBM Systems Director Network Control program. A license is also required for each switch and router being managed, based on its size and type. Switches and routers are categorized as small, medium, or large, based on the following categories:

  • Small: Small switches are machines with a fixed number of ports that require 1U or 2U of rack space.
  • Medium: Medium switches are modular machines that can support up to eight optional interface or controller modules.
  • Large: Large switches are modular machines that can support more than eight optional interface or controller modules.

A detailed list of supported IBM Ethernet switches is available at

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
