IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager V4.4

IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager (AEM) V4.4 is designed to simplify the management of energy consumption across multiple IBM and non-IBM systems. AEM tracks energy use over time and can assist you in determining how to reallocate energy to additional servers without adding additional energy or cooling equipment. When energy is constrained, AEM is designed to allow energy to be allocated on a server to server basis.

AEM is also designed to track and allocate energy consumption in a manner intended not to affect performance. Sensors and alerts can warn you if limiting energy to a server could affect performance. AEM is designed to increase your capability to control energy consumption and improve energy use efficiency by controlling energy use across the data center. AEM can limit server energy consumption by capping maximum energy consumption, which can potentially result in savings and cost reductions.

AEM is designed to complement and integrate with higher-level management software such as Tivoli. AEM interfaces with the IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Energy Management. AEM can help protect your IT investment through its open design and support for industry standards, which enables heterogeneous physical and virtual management with support for multiple platforms and operating systems. Certain non-IBM, legacy IBM, and IBM Storage Systems can be monitored through power distribution units (PDU) support. In addition, AEM can collect information from select facility providers, including Liebert's SiteScan from Emerson Network Power, InfraStruXure Central from APC, and Power Xpert and Foreseer from Eaton. Sensors from SynapSense, iButton, Sensatronics, SmartWorks, and Arch Rock are also supported, in order to provide a view of data center environmental data, and for equipment that does not have its own built-in sensors. AEM can perform monitoring and management functions for all supported systems from a single console.

AEM is designed to provide monitoring functions for devices that do not directly support AEM. Through the use of select PDUs, the energy usage of a device plugged into a supported PDU can be monitored by AEM. Examples of what these devices may be are older servers and low- and mid-range storage devices. The ability to monitor these devices helps to provide a more complete view of energy used in the data center. Additionally, AEM provides users power management functions for some PDUs. Through AEM, users can turn off individual outlets on a PDU. This allows administrators to prevent the plugging in of unauthorized equipment. It also provides a way to quickly turn off power in case of emergencies. Some PDUs provide the capability of attaching an environment probe. This probe could measure temperature or humidity. This information can also be collected by AEM.

A built-in savings calculator is provided to help calculate the energy savings that can be realized on IBM Power Systems servers.

Installation of AEM V4.4 is enhanced with IBM Systems Director Express Edition V6.3 and is installed along with Systems Director V6.3 in a single installation step. It includes all AEM monitoring functions and a 90-day trial for the AEM management functions included in IBM Systems Director Standard Edition V6.3.

  • Power trending is a monitoring function that displays energy use for individual systems or groups of systems over time (in a graph or table format) to help enable you to understand energy use trends within and across your systems.
  • Thermal trending is a monitoring function that displays information on the inlet and exhaust temperatures for individual systems one at a time to help you understand thermal characteristics of your systems. Incorporating this data into one centralized software-based energy use offering allows finite and localized temperature adjustments within the IT shop to help reduce energy costs for cooling.
  • Support for facility providers is a function that retrieves information from Emerson Network Power's SiteScan application, APC's InfraStruXure Central, and Eaton's Power Xpert and Foreseer.
  • Support for sensors is a function that retrieves temperature and power information via sensors. Supported vendors include SynapSense, iButton, Sensatronics, and Arch Rock. Sensor data can be associated with IBM Systems Director-managed resources. These provide a broader scope of energy information across systems within the data center, while including a view of facilities equipment.
  • Power and cooling relationships can be configured to servers for all of the above PDUs, sensors, and equipment discovered from the infrastructure management providers. This allows energy data and events to be associated with the servers that use them.

IBM Systems Director Service and Support Manager V6.3

The call home support offered by SSM requires that the Systems Director management server have access to the Internet to be able to open problem tickets for managed endpoints and to transmit the data that IBM needs to provide service for the managed endpoints. For systems that do not have Internet access, SSM adds new capabilities to move the data needed by support to a system that does have Internet access. SSM supports the ability to off-load the service data to a USB drive with improved file size limits, or use FTP to transmit the support files from the Systems Director management server to another system. SSM V6.3 also provides support for customers to download the support files from the UI to the system that the IBM Systems Director UI is running on. In addition, SSM has enhanced the Support Files UI to allow the customer to more easily collect the data that the support team is asking for.

SSM automatically collects the service data needed when creating a problem ticket. If the problem ticket is for System x hardware (server or blade), part of the service data required is the output from running the Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) tool. SSM has implemented the ability to dynamically download the DSA tool to ensure that the correct version of DSA is run.

SSM examines hardware error events that IBM Systems Director receives and creates problem tickets as appropriate. When the managed endpoints are running virtual operating systems, the errors that Director receives from the virtual OS often reflect the virtual hardware, not the actual hardware. With Version 6.3, SSM implemented the ability to listen to hardware errors that the service processor detects, because the service processor has visibility to the real hardware. In Version 6.3, this support is limited to the Integrated Management Module (IMM) V1, which runs on x86 servers.

Installation of IBM Systems Director Service and Support Manager V6.3 is enhanced with IBM Systems Director Express Edition V6.3 and is installed along with Systems Director V6.3 in a single installation step.

IBM Systems Director Transition Manager for HP Systems Insight Manager

The IBM Systems Director Transition Manager for HP Systems Insight Manager function has been integrated into IBM Systems Director V6.3 and is no longer a separate plug-in that needs to be installed along with the other components of IBM Systems Director Express Edition. Systems Director V6.3 can discover systems that are being managed by HP Systems Insight Manager and smoothly make the transition to managing the systems in IBM Systems Director. You can view your HP Systems Insight Manager managed systems, discover those systems, and start essential IBM Systems Director tasks.

  • Power capping, included with Standard Edition, is designed to allow you to set a maximum power level per system. If the system starts to consume more than the maximum level set, AEM is designed to throttle the processor to use less power, which slows down the system. Setting the cap will ensure that the system will not use more than the cap value, thus allowing the user to allocate less power for that system. For example, setting an ac power cap on an existing system or group of systems, could allow for the addition of systems while staying within the capacity of the data center's electrical infrastructure.
  • Power saver mode, included with Standard Edition, is designed to allow you to manage your power use as work activity shifts across various demands. Static power saving mode is enabled via an on/off switch, which you can schedule during times of low utilization, or a script can be written so that it can be switched automatically, based on processor utilization.

New appendix assists Active Directory users: A new appendix, LDAP User Authentication using Active Directory, has been added to help you integrate your site's IBM Tivoli Monitoring user authentication (for either the Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server or the Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server) with Microsoft's Active Directory product, which is based on the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, or LDAP. (The basic integration of Tivoli Monitoring servers with LDAP directory databases is fully described in the IBM Tivoli Monitoring: Administrator's Guide.) This new appendix includes two user scenarios meant to help you understand and implement your own user authentication with Active Directory.

Prerequisite checking for IBM Tivoli Monitoring Agents: A new capability allows you to perform prerequisite checking for agents before carrying out an installation. The two mechanisms available are a manually executed stand-alone prerequisite scanner or a remote prerequisite scanner facility that extends the capabilities of IBM Tivoli Monitoring's remote deployment component. The tacmd checkprereq command allows you to check the prerequisites required for deploying an agent to a managed system. The tacmd checkprereq command deploys a prerequisite checking tool to determine if the target system meets the requirements for the agent. A global transaction ID is immediately returned. You can then use the Deployment Status workspace in the Tivoli Enterprise Portal, or run the tacmd getDeployStatus command, to view the status of the queued operation.

Self-describing monitoring agents: The self-describing agent feature enables new or updated IBM Tivoli Monitoring agents to become operational after installation, without having to perform additional product support installation steps. By default, the self-describing agent capability is disabled at the hub monitoring server. Self-describing agent environment variables are enabled by default for remote monitoring servers, portal servers, and self-describing agent-enabled agents. However, these components disable the self-describing agent capability if connected to a hub monitoring server that has the self-describing agent capability disabled. Enabling the self-describing agent capability at the hub monitoring server controls the capability across all components. You can disable the capability individually at a remote monitoring server, portal server, or agent, but the best practice is to control the self-describing agent capability from the hub monitoring server. If you prefer to manage application support in the same way as for earlier versions, you can disable the self-describing capability by editing the monitoring server and agent environment variables.

IBM Tivoli Monitoring Startup Center: A new graphical user interface tool that uses topology diagrams to help you plan, configure, and deploy your IBM Tivoli Monitoring environment is available. The purpose of the Startup Center is to get an initial environment up and running for a new IBM Tivoli Monitoring installation.

IBM HTTP Server is the default web server used for communication between the portal client and server: The switch to IBM HTTP Server occurs automatically with no action required on your part. IBM HTTP Server provides increased scalability, performance, and reliability for portal clients. The IBM HTTP Server requires specified ports to be open in any firewall between the client and the server.

The portal client can communicate with the portal server using only HTTP or HTTPS protocol: HTTP communication can be used between the portal client and server without the need for the CORBA communication protocol. HTTP communication is required to integrate with security products such as Tivoli Access Manager and WebSEAL.

IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM) System p ( Power Systems ) Agents V6.2.2

ITM System p (Power Systems) Agents have been updated to include APAR fixes and a VIOS Premium Agent update that provides Fibre Channel Adapter data for NPIV environments. The Version 6.2.2 VIOS Premium agent is enhanced to monitor the health and performance of Fibre Channel adapters even when these adapters are only used for NPIV. In this case, no SAN devices (disks and so on) are defined for the VIOS over these adapters. The new workspace is added to the VIOS Premium Agent for reporting selected Fibre Channel Adapter metrics from the fcstat command.

ITM V6.2.2 includes monitoring of key Power Systems AIX components, including:

  • VIOS: The VIOS Agent monitors the health of the VIOS, provides mapping of storage and new resources to the client LPAR, and provides storage and new utilization statistics. The VIOS Premium Agent is preinstalled on a VIOS system.
  • CEC: The CEC Agent provides overall CPU and memory utilization of the frame for monitored partitions and provides CPU and memory utilization by LPAR. The CEC Agent must be installed on an AIX partition that resides on the CEC to be monitored.
  • AIX Premium Agent: The AIX Premium Agent provides statistics for each LPAR-CPU (entitled, physical, and logical), memory utilization, disk, and new utilization and process data. This agent also provides usage statistics for WPARs as well.
  • HMC Agent provides health and availability of the HMC. Multiple instances of the HMC Agent can be invoked on the same partition to monitor multiple HMCs.
  • Integration with IBM Systems Director: This will provide IBM hardware customers with monitoring and management from one UI, which will provide for reduced mean time to repair. This integration provides the capability to contextually launch IBM Systems Director from IBM Tivoli Monitoring to perform configuration changes, start and stop LPARs, and perform other actions.
  • Storage Utilization by LPAR (VIOS): The VIOS Storage Mapping workspace was enhanced to include disk transfers related to the client partition. With this feature, the customer is able to easily view storage utilization by LPAR, reducing mean time to repair.
  • NPIV Client/Server Mappings (VIOS agent): Virtual Fibre Channel adapters make use of an industry standard called N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV), which allows enabled Fibre Channel adapters to be configured with 64 virtual ports.
  • Shared Pool Data (CEC and AIX Premium agents): In the CEC agent, customers are able to view statistics for multiple shared pools to include pool ID, CPU units consumed, number of LPARs using the pool, available CPU units in the pool, and pool entitlement and maximum pool capacity.
  • The AIX premium agent also provides the pool ID in the system work space. With this feature, the customer is able to determine which LPARs are using CPU from the shared pool and whether more CPU should be assigned to that LPAR.

Tivoli Performance Analyzer integrated as a base component of IBM Tivoli Monitoring: The Tivoli Performance Analyzer is now a base component of IBM Tivoli Monitoring and part of the IBM Tivoli Monitoring installation media. Tivoli Performance Analyzer adds predictive capability to Tivoli Monitoring so you can monitor resource consumption trends, anticipate future performance issues, and avoid or resolve problems more quickly.

IBM Tivoli Common Reporting V2.1.1

Tivoli Common Reporting V2.1.1 provides an integrated reporting solution for the products in the Tivoli portfolio. It allows the linking of multiple reports across various Tivoli products to simplify the report navigation and accelerate access to key report information.

Tivoli Common Reporting V2.1.1 is an update to the 2.1 release that brings the power of common business analytics and reporting to the Tivoli portfolio. Support for IBM Tivoli Common Reporting is provided through out-of-the-box integration with Cognos® query and report design capabilities. Through the IBM Cognos Framework Manager, the customer or partner can create a business-oriented reporting data model for a technology/vendor containing reporting entities and their mappings to the underlying database schema. Once the IBM Cognos Framework Model is applied, the IBM Tivoli Common Reporting GUI can be used to build report templates for publishing. Together with product data models, Tivoli Common Reporting enables customers to create new reports with a drag and drop interface. No SQL, HTML, or database skills are required.

Processor

Processor is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. Processor (commonly called a processor core or CPU) is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor.

A license must be acquired for all activated processor cores (including any temporary processors) on the machines running the program and the activated processors (including any temporary processors) on the machines being managed by the program.

A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be acquired for all activated processor cores available for use on the server. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.

For POWER7 processor-based server tier information, refer to the POWER7 processor-based server product announcements.

The quantity of software license and IBM Software Maintenance (SWMA) entitlements required is based on the total number of processors in each of the Power Systems servers running and being managed by IBM Systems Director and the processor tier (small, medium, and large).

System Program Order (SPO):

An order for SPO 5692-A6P or 5692-LOP is mandatory for delivery of program media or publications. The individual licensed program orders are for registration and billing purposes only. No physical deliveries occur as a result of those orders.

Specify feature number 3435.

Machine-readable materials are only available on DVD. To receive shipment of machine-readable materials, the order needs to include SPO 5692-A6P or 5692-LOP. The individual licensed program order (for example, 5765-EXP) must still be ordered but will be for registration and billing purposes only and will not result in shipment of materials.

The System Program Order must also contain the following features to deliver a machine-readable copy of the product using the currently available media.

Terms and conditions
Bottom rule

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty applies

Yes

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

http://www.ibm.com/support/handbook

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Volume orders (IVO)

Yes. Contact your IBM representative.

Passport Advantage applies

No

Usage restrictions

Yes. IBM Systems Director Standard Edition and IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition include a limited-use version of IBM Systems Director Network Control (Network Control) and are subject to the following license restrictions: the licensee is authorized to perform network device management, such as discovery, inventory, and monitoring status, and to use network diagnostics. Any other use of Network Control, including advanced network topology views, interfaces to vendor configuration tools, and configuration of host VLANs, requires a full-use license of Network Control, which must be obtained separately.

IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition includes a limited-use version of:

  • IBM Tivoli Monitoring
  • IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Energy Management
  • IBM Tivoli Network Management
  • IBM Tivoli Application Dependency and Discovery Manager
  • IBM DB2 Enterprise Server Edition

The IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition license includes the use of these programs on the AIX platform to manage Power Systems servers on which the program is licensed, up to the level specified in a PoE, invoice, license, or other document from IBM describing entitlement to use IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition.

For additional information, refer to the License Information document that is available on the IBM Software License Agreement website

http://www.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf
Software Subscription and Support applies

Yes. All distributed software licenses include Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at

http://www.ibm.com/support/handbook

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
