Overview
Bottom rule

IBM Workload Deployer Pattern for Web Applications V1.0 is the first offering in the IBM workload pattern portfolio. Workload patterns are full stacks of IBM software tailored for a particular purpose. This tailoring is done with a focused goal in mind: reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) for many categories of applications. Deployer Pattern for Web Applications provides a set of capabilities that are central to the management of web applications.

Deployer Pattern for Web Applications includes an elastically scalable application server and an elastic caching component. These components are managed together as a single unit, which reduces the management and operational complexity of an end-to-end environment for hosting Java™ Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) web applications.

You can use Deployer Pattern for Web Applications to deploy and manage web applications in a more cost-effective way. This can provide significant value for your data center or business in the following ways:

  • Reduce the deployment and configuration time for your web application environment
  • Reduce risk by representing your infrastructure in code form (codifying) and preserving best practices for repeated, consistent deployments
  • Spend less time administering your web applications and more time developing new solutions

IBM Workload Deployer Image for x86 Systems V1.0 provides the foundation for all workload patterns, including Deployer Pattern for Web Applications. Deployer Image for x86 Systems provides the operating environment in which workload patterns run, including the operating system and infrastructure unique to IBM Workload Deployer V3.0. Deployer Image for x86 Systems is a required component for use of Deployer Pattern for Web Applications.

Description

IBM Workload Deployer Pattern for Web Applications V1.0

IBM Workload Deployer Pattern for Web Applications V1.0 provides a way to deploy and manage web applications in a more cost-effective way. This cost-effectiveness is obtained in part through the removal of choice. While Deployer Pattern for Web Applications supports applications of all sizes and levels of importance, the removal of choice will preclude very customized applications from being able to run. The question of compatibility will normally come down to whether or not all of an application's required middleware componentry is included in Deployer Pattern for Web Applications. For example, Deployer Pattern for Web Applications only supports local Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs). It is typically the case that simpler web applications will fit this solution.

Deployer Pattern for Web Applications includes a dynamically scalable application server, which will grow to meet the resource needs of the applications hosted within it, based on processor consumption. Interaction with Deployer Pattern for Web Applications occurs through artifacts and policies. You simply provide artifacts such as .ear files and .ddl files and specify deployment and management policies, and you are ready to use your application. The deployable artifact describes the operational policy by which the application server should be managed. For example, you can specify that a .war file should be hosted in a highly available manner, with transactions tracked using an external transaction tracking product.

Deployer Pattern for Web Applications allows connections to an existing database. Use of that external database component is as simple as providing a .ddl file that describes your application's schema.

In addition to the ability to dynamically scale the application server footprint in response to fluctuating processor consumption metrics, Deployer Pattern for Web Applications provides scalability by utilizing an elastic caching component. This caching component is a distributed in-memory cache, which is highly scalable and fast.

Overall, Deployer Pattern for Web Applications provides an end-to-end deployment and management solution for web applications. This solution provides a more cost-effective way of managing web applications due to reduced manual labor and increased consistency.

IBM Workload Deployer Image for x86 Systems V1.0

IBM Workload Deployer Image for x86 Systems V1.0 provides the foundation for all workload patterns, including the Deployer Pattern for Web Applications. It provides the operating environment in which workload patterns run, including the operating system and infrastructure unique to IBM Workload Deployer. Deployer Image for x86 Systems is a required component for use of Deployer Pattern for Web Applications.

Deployer Image for x86 Systems is also required for shared services components deployed by Workload Deployer. These services are shared across all workload patterns, and are responsible for managing load balancing and other cross-cutting concerns.

IBM Workload Deployer V3.0

IBM Workload Deployer manages workload patterns like Deployer Pattern for Web Applications with the same infrastructure support as offered for "topology patterns" built on Hypervisor™ Edition images. Specifically, Workload Deployer offers license management capability, including the ability to set thresholds to prevent individual users from putting a department over their license entitlement position. For more information on Workload Deployer, refer to Hardware Announcement 111-073, dated April 05, 2011.

Processor Value Unit

Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU Table by Processor Value, Brand, Type and Model Number at the site below) and the number of processors made available to the Program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores.

http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

Licensee can deploy the Program using either Full Capacity licensing or Virtualization Capacity (Sub-Capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (see web page below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the Program, except for those servers from which the Program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the Program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at

http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/Counting_Software_licenses_using_specific_virtualization_technologies.html

* An Activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Note: Some programs may require licenses for the Program AND what is being managed. In that case, the following applies: In addition to the entitlements required for the Program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this Program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the Program.

Note: Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis ONLY. In that case, the following applies: Instead of the entitlements required for the Program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this Program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the Program.

Note: A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies: Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the Program, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this Program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the Referenced Program as if the Program itself were executing everywhere the Referenced Program was executing, independent of the basis on which the Referenced Program is licensed.

Note: Express® and Workgroup programs may be licensed with maximum use terms. In that case, the following applies: The maximum authorized use terms and conditions for PVU licensed IBM Express and Middleware Programs can be found in the IBM Express and Middleware Licensing Guide.

Processor Value Unit (PVU) sub-capacity licensing

This software product is eligible for sub-capacity licensing. Customers must accept the terms of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (Attachment), and must obtain PVU Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs) for the maximum processor core capacity available to an eligible sub-capacity product when deployed in an eligible virtualization environment. This is also referred to as sub-capacity or virtualization capacity licensing.

Customers must use the IBM License Metric Tool unless they meet the exceptions described in the Attachment.

For information regarding PVU sub-capacity licensing, including terms and IBM License Metric Tool ordering information, visit
