Overview
Bottom rule

Every day your z/OS-based applications generate huge amounts of information, reports, and other output that must be delivered quickly, accurately, efficiently, and in a variety of formats to customers, employees, partners, and suppliers all over the globe. But the large number of formats and technologies can be complex to manage, and can make optimizing your output environment difficult. Don't change your z/OS output; use these new products to transform it to gain increased flexibility and efficiency for your production operations by leveraging a wider choice of technology, protocols, and formats.

Maximize the reach and optimize the distribution of your z/OS information with three new print transform products from IBM :

Transform your traditional mainframe AFP output to a new format transparently, without rewriting any applications. Together with Infoprint Server for z/OS (an optionally priced feature of z/OS , 5694-A01, that is a prerequisite) these IBM Print Transform from AFP products for IBM Infoprint Server for z/OS provide the foundation for more efficient ways to deliver critical business information to your employees, suppliers, partners, and customers.

Flexible printing

The IBM Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS give you the flexibility and delivery you need for output management. These allow you to print z/OS Advanced Function Printing ( AFP )-based output on network-attached printers that support PCL, PostScript , or PDF for personal or departmental use any time.

Electronic output

Transforming AFP into PDF lets you turn print output into electronic output for more timely delivery, streamlining the information flow within your organization as it can reduce or eliminate costs associated with printing. For example, you may have employees in home offices or travelling, and sending printed output simply isn't practical. PDF documents can be more useful than paper documents, by including bookmarks that let the user navigate easily and quickly through the content. Also, AFP documents converted into PDF can be more easily integrated into your enterprise's content management solution, to help support critical business processes.

Highly secure information delivery

Privacy of information legislation and concerns over the protection of sensitive client information have created an increased focus on security. AFP output can be encrypted while it is being converted to PDF to help provide for secure electronic delivery with Print Transform from AFP to PDF for Infoprint Server for z/OS .

Functionality

The IBM Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS give you improved functionality. For example:

Make Infoprint Server for z/OS and these Print Transform from AFP products an integral part of your z/OS-based enterprise output management infrastructure.

Bottom rule

Three new print transform products are designed to give you flexibility for printed or electronic output delivery for your z/OS data.

These IBM Print Transform from AFP products for IBM Infoprint Server for z/OS provide the foundation for more efficient ways to deliver critical business information to your employees, suppliers, partners, and customers. The three new print transform products are integrated with and require Infoprint Server for z/OS , an optionally priced feature of z/OS (5694-A01). This integration can leverage the resilience and scalability of z/OS to enable centralized enterprise-wide print and output management. For example, it can allow the transforms to be invoked in a variety of ways -- using the batch program AOPBATCH, or automatically through configuration in Infoprint Server for z/OS printer definitions.

IBM Print Transform from AFP to PDF for Infoprint Server for z/OS

IBM Print Transform from AFP to PDF for Infoprint Server for z/OS (5655-TF1) can dynamically and seamlessly convert AFP-based output to PDF-based files. By converting AFP to PDF, AFPxPDF can make your host-based data available to be posted on the Internet, generated from web-based applications, viewable by browsers, such as Microsoft® Windows® Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Adobe® Acrobat Reader, and printable just about anywhere.

AFPxPDF is dynamic and seamless. It can map standard AFP fonts to standard Acrobat fonts (either standard PostScript/PDF Type 1 fonts or embedded Type 1 fonts) without the need to rewrite your host applications. And it isn't limited to fonts; it can also incorporate select barcodes, images, graphics, line data, and more.

AFPxPDF can help turn your information into a richer end-user experience. For example, PDF overlays can be used to create the look of preprinted forms (with objects such as watermarks and color graphics).

AFPxPDF is secure. With integrated encryption capability, you can be confident in sending your valuable data.

AFPxPDF can help save you time and money. Send neat, professional documents quickly and easily over the Internet, avoiding the cost of paper printing and delays of delivery. Archiving is made easier with the ability to dynamically convert AFP data to PDF whenever you need it. Furthermore, object compression can help save on data storage costs.

The value of print and output on z/OS

The IBM Infoprint Server feature of IBM z/OS (5694-A01) and its companion IBM Infoprint Transform products can help provide a highly available, well-integrated output solution to support business communication throughout your enterprise network and over the Internet to suppliers, partners, and clients with a broad array of output options. As a result, you can help lower total cost of ownership for output delivery and management.

Infoprint Server for z/OS can help significantly reduce the total cost of ownership for output delivery and management by consolidating print workloads, helping to improve print management productivity, and helping to protect your current investment in distributed printers and print applications. In addition, the Infoprint Central, a component of Infoprint Server for z/OS , is a web-based print management user interface that allows help desk operators, print administrators, and users to view print jobs, queues, and printers. Depending upon their security authorization, they can hold, move, cancel, and release jobs; turn printers online and offline; pinpoint network connectivity problems; track Infoprint Central actions by user ID; and perform many other functions for job and printer management. This print management tool can help you reduce the overall cost of distributed print management by making it easier and faster to train new operators and by giving them a productivity tool to more quickly diagnose and solve print-related problems.

Output transformed from AFP into PostScript can be printed on printers that support PostScript Level 2 or 3.

Output transformed from AFP to PDF is PDF 1.4 and can be viewed using the Adobe Acrobat Viewer.

Software requirements

Print Transform from AFP to PDF for Infoprint Server for z/OS (5655-TF1), Print Transform from AFP to PCL for Infoprint Server for z/OS (5655-TF2), and Print Transform from AFP to PostScript for Infoprint Server for z/OS (5655-TF3) require z/OS V1.10 (5694-A01) or later and the Infoprint Server optionally priced feature of z/OS .

Performance considerations

Transforming print jobs from the data stream in which they were created to another data stream will use more system resources than printing the same job to a printer that supports the native data stream. The print file resulting from the transforms may be larger than the original input print file. The impact on system and network resources will vary depending upon the print volume, the print data streams processed, and the current utilization of the system and network resources.

Transform execution speed varies with the data stream type, job length, output resolution, screening algorithms (for images), level of encryption, and density and complexity of the pages in the print file. In particular, PostScript and PDF transforms vary greatly in complexity, and transform speeds may vary significantly for similar, but different jobs.

Security, auditability, and control

Print Transform from AFP to PDF for Infoprint Server for z/OS , V1.1, Print Transform from AFP to PCL for Infoprint Server for z/OS , V1.1, and Print Transform from AFP to PostScript for Infoprint Server for z/OS , V1.1 use the security and auditability features of the host z/OS operating system. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM . Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
