Rapid process improvement using WebSphere Lombardi Edition

WebSphere Lombardi Edition is a business process management (BPM) offering for building and managing process applications. WebSphere Lombardi Edition has a single comprehensive environment for process design, execution, monitoring, and optimization, and is specifically designed to make it easy for process owners and business users to engage directly in the improvement of their business processes. WebSphere Lombardi Edition is well suited for implementation of business processes that exhibit a high degree of end user involvement and collaboration, and that change frequently. WebSphere Lombardi Edition helps you:

Build process applications easily -- Provides an environment for rapid composition and continuous change of process applications. Business users and technical developers need to collaborate to build the correct process solutions. A unique shared model architecture supports the highest levels of collaborative process definition with these features:

  • Unified Authoring Environment -- Supports graphical, what-you-see-is-what-you-execute implementation and testing of process applications, services, user interfaces, and rules
  • Standards-based process design -- Uses Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN)
  • Properties sheets - Allows configuration of implementation details instead of coding so that less technical users can participate in design
  • Interactive playback - Enables team validation of process requirements at any time without compilation
  • Shared library of all process assets - Facilitates drag-and-drop reuse and collaborative implementation

Drive better process control -- Provides real-time control for in-flight processes. Process owners need to be able to react and adjust quickly to market pressures, regulatory changes, or other external forces. WebSphere Lombardi Edition supports the highest levels of dynamic process execution with these features:

  • Process Portal -- Drives process performance giving users a consolidated view of all outstanding tasks while giving managers visibility into team and process performance
  • Process Coach user interfaces -- Guides end users through tasks consistently and accurately even though the tasks may be new or unfamiliar
  • Graphical end-user view of process status - Helps end users to understand their current position in the process
  • Explicit event modeling - Defines workflow and exception handling
  • Exposed process parameters and thresholds - Allows real-time control during in-flight processing
  • Ad-hoc actions - Lets end users perform spontaneous tasks and alter workflow
  • Collaboration activities - Lets end users communicate and collaborate on specific tasks during process execution
  • Real-time scoreboards - Provides out-of-box visibility into work-in-progress, along with the ability to take corrective action if necessary

Improve performance with inherent visibility -- Provides end-to-end visibility of both human and system interactions. Managers want to see performance measurements in terms of the business process KPIs and SLAs. WebSphere Lombardi Edition supports the highest levels of dynamic process visibility with these features:

  • Performance Data Warehouse -- Automatically gathers and correlates performance events and business data to modeled process metrics for process visibility that is always up-to-date
  • Process Optimizer -- Allows a crystal-clear visualization of in-flight or historical performance bottlenecks and other problems, directly on the process model diagram

Manage all aspects of your BPM program -- Helps companies expand BPM adoption rapidly throughout their organization by increasing collaboration, governance, and reuse while simplifying the entire process development life cycle. WebSphere Lombardi Edition supports the highest levels of program manageability with these features:

  • Process Center -- Provides a central repository and control center for organizing and managing all process artifacts, applications, and services that are created as part of a BPM program
  • Toolkits -- Manages independent versions of process artifact libraries, shared across multiple process applications
  • Snapshots -- Captures the state of all artifacts in a process application or toolkit (including business process diagrams, rules, data, forms, services, and simulation scenarios) at a specific point in time with just one mouse-click, to reduce version management complexity
  • Back-in-time versioning --Restores any historical snapshot of a process application or toolkit with just one mouse-click, so it can be viewed or executed
  • Process Server Registry -- Provides centralized tools to install and track deployed versions of multiple processes across various runtime server environments

New Capabilities in WebSphere Lombardi Edition V7.2

WebSphere Lombardi Edition V7.2 has added features to make it easier for customers around the world to expedite their deployment and adoption of process improvement applications. This release includes the following new capabilities to help you:

Work in more local languages -- Process designers, analysts, end users, and managers all prefer to work on process improvement tasks in their own local languages. In this release, the WebSphere Lombardi Edition design-time and run-time tools and documentation have been localized to support any local language, and include out-of-the-box translations for prevalent international languages. This expanded globalization will make it easier to use and adopt WebSphere Lombardi Edition V7.2 in geographies around the world. This release includes the following features:

  • Additional language translations are added for Chinese (both simplified Han and traditional Han) and Korean. Together with English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese (Portugal), Portuguese (Brazil), Dutch, Russian, and Japanese translations, WebSphere Lombardi Edition comes ready for use with commonly preferred languages. WebSphere Lombardi Edition V7.2 product documentation will be made available in all of these languages.
  • WebSphere Lombardi Edition uses Unicode encoding in order to support localization, translation, and data entry using any local language, utilizing standard localization and translation resources that are built into the Authoring Environment.
  • The Authoring Environment is localized and translated joining the Process Portal and Process Coaches as globalized user interfaces.

Extend core BPM capabilities with complementary IBM products -- Process application developers use WebSphere Lombardi Edition core capabilities to improve process deployment, workflow, visibility, and optimization. In this release, process developers can also utilize predefined integrations into IBM broad product portfolio in order to augment Lombardi Edition core capabilities with advanced system integration and service orchestration, automated decision evaluation using a business rule management system (BRMS), or document and image sharing via an enterprise content management (ECM) repository. The built-in IBM product integrations greatly reduce the effort and time required to incorporate best-of-breed SOA, BRMS, and ECM capabilities into your WebSphere Lombardi Edition process improvement applications. This release includes the following complementary integrations:

  • WebSphere Process Server and WebSphere Service Registry and Repository -- These integrations make it easy to incorporate SOA-based process automation and system orchestration services into your business processes. WebSphere Process Server is ideally-suited to implementing reusable subprocesses that automate and orchestrate system and service interactions, with high performance and high integrity. In WebSphere Lombardi Edition V7.2, the Web Service integration component available in the Authoring Environment has been expanded to enable you to connect to both secure and non-secure services exposed by WebSphere Process Server V7.0.0.x. Process developers can configure the component connection to a specific WebSphere Process Server service by directly browsing the WebSphere Service Registry Repository to discover the WebSphere Process Server service location and interfaces. WebSphere Process Server integrations can be created once and placed in Toolkits for reuse across many Lombardi Edition process applications -- services can be dragged directly into service flow graphs.
  • WebSphere ILOG JRules -- This integration makes it easy to automate process decisions using business policies that are defined, shared, and governed within the powerful ILOG JRules business rules management system (BRMS). ILOG JRules is used to implement reusable decision services that automate complex decision making. ILOG JRules is ideally-suited to defining and evaluating business rule sets that may be large and sophisticated, and for managing shared rule sets that are maintained and governed independently from any one specific business process or application.

In WebSphere Lombardi Edition V7.2, a new ILOG Integration component is added to the service modeler palette in the Authoring Environment. Process developers can drag an ILOG Integration component into a service flow graph, and configure the connection to a specific ILOG decision service using a simple property sheet. ILOG integrations can be created once and placed in Toolkits for reuse across many Lombardi Edition process applications.

  • FileNet P8 Content Manager/IBM DB2 Content Management V8 (CM8 ) -- The integrations make it easy for Lombardi Edition process applications to store and share documents and images using these IBM Enterprise Content Management (ECM) products. IBM FileNet P8 Content Manager and IBM DB2 Content Management V8 (CM8) are both ideally-suited for enterprise-wide storage, sharing, indexing, and processing of business documents, images, and content artifacts. In WebSphere Lombardi Edition V7.2, end users will be able to list and view documents from targeted FileNet P8 or CM8 repositories using Lombardi Edition process applications using new Process Coach widgets. These new widgets have been added to the Process Coach design palette in the Authoring Environment.

Process developers can drag and drop the widgets onto Process Coach layouts; then each list widget can be configured with target repository and search criteria, and each view widget can be linked to a list widget. At run time, document list widgets will be populated according to the target ECM repository and search criteria, and a document view widget will dynamically display any document that a user selects from the list. Also in this release, a set of ECM integration APIs have been defined to allow process applications to perform basic actions on documents or images in an ECM repository, like upload/create, rename, move, or delete.

Manage processes directly from Outlook or SharePoint -- Successful process improvement requires active participation by end users and the level of end-user adoption can be improved significantly by making it as easy as possible to participate. In this release, WebSphere Lombardi Edition V7.2 allows end users to launch and perform Lombardi Edition process tasks directly from the popular Microsoft products, Office and SharePoint. The Microsoft integrations are offered as optional add-on components:

  • WebSphere Lombardi Edition for Microsoft Office add-on -- Enables Microsoft Office users to view and run Lombardi Edition tasks directly from their Outlook desktop. The Office add-on installs a Lombardi Edition plug-in onto the end-user Outlook desktop client.
  • WebSphere Lombardi Edition for Microsoft SharePoint add-on -- Enables Microsoft SharePoint users to view and run Lombardi Edition tasks directly from webparts that are dropped into SharePoint portal pages. The SharePoint add-on is installed on any SharePoint server that will be used to host interactions with processes via the Lombardi Edition webparts.

Migration support

WebSphere Lombardi Edition V7.2 supports the migration of process applications from WebSphere Lombardi Edition V7.1 and Lombardi Teamworks 7.0.x, including design-time process definition assets and in-flight production process instances.

WebSphere Lombardi Edition V7.2 supports importing design-time process definition assets from earlier releases of Lombardi Teamworks 6.x.

Authorized User

Authorized User is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Authorized User is a unique person who is given access to the program. The program may be installed on any number of computers or servers and each Authorized User may have simultaneous access to any number of instances of the program at one time. Licensee must obtain separate, dedicated entitlements for each Authorized User accessing the program in any manner directly or indirectly (for example: via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means. An entitlement for an Authorized User is unique to that Authorized User and may not be shared, nor may it be reassigned other than for the permanent transfer of the Authorized User entitlement to another person.

Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case the following applies: Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the program or that is otherwise managed by the program is considered a separate User of the program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.

Application Instance

Application Instance is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An entitlement is required for each instance of an application connected to or managed by the program. An application in a test, development, staging, or production environment is each considered to be a separate instance of the application and each must have an entitlement. As well, multiple application instances in a single environment are each considered to be separate instances of the application and each must have an entitlement.

Processor Value Unit

Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU Table by Processor Value, Brand, Type and Model Number at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

It is also based on the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores.

Licensee can deploy the program using either Full Capacity licensing or Virtualization Capacity (Sub-Capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (see webpage below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores2 in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/Counting_Software_licenses_using_specific_virtualization_technologies.html
2
An Activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Notes

Some programs may require licenses for the program AND what is being managed. In that case, the following applies: In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.

Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis ONLY. In that case, the following applies: Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.

A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies: Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the Referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the Referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the Referenced program is licensed.

Express and Workgroup programs may be licensed with maximum use terms. In that case, the following applies: The maximum authorized use terms and conditions for PVU licensed IBM Express and Middleware programs can be found in the IBM Express and Middleware Licensing Guide.

Terms and conditions
Bottom rule

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

This product is only available via Passport Advantage. It is not available as shrinkwrap.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

http://www.ibm.com/support/handbook

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of five years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) also provides you with access to updates (modifications or fixes), releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.
