Overview
Bottom rule

WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Application Server Community Edition introduce new socket-based pricing.

  • WebSphere Application Server now offers an option for socket-based pricing in addition to PVU1-based pricing. This allows you to select the pricing option that best supports your platform choices.
  • WebSphere Application Server Community Edition offers socket-based pricing for both Entry and Elite levels of support. For Community Edition, the new support options replace previous server-based pricing options.

These socket-based options more closely match your deployment and production configuration needs. Also, they provide better price/performance on newer multi-core platforms. All socket-based pricing is per Limited Use Socket2

Enhancements are also made to WebSphere Application Server V7.0 simple web-server (HTTP) load-balancing and failover capability. The WebSphere Application Server V7 license restriction of two servers is now expanded to five servers. A new merge tool and documentation streamlines the task of configuring the load-balancing capability by combining the plug-in configuration files of multiple stand-alone application server profiles into a single configuration file. Simple load-balancing distributes HTTP requests across multiple WebSphere Application Server instances. Simple load-balancing can also handle failover of the application state that is maintained in HTTP sessions.

Concurrent with this announcement, the number of servers to which a single IBM HTTP Server plug-in can route a request has been increased. Previously, a single IBM HTTP Server was restricted to routing requests to two servers. This limit is now expanded to twenty-five WebSphere Application Servers (V7.0).

Description
Bottom rule

WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Application Server Community Edition offer new socket-based pricing options that include:

  • Socket-based pricing options for WebSphere Application Server in addition to the current PVU-based pricing options
  • Replacing server-based support pricing with socket-based support pricing for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition
  • Entry and Elite support options for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition.
  • Entry support option for Apache Geronimo
  • Lower cost options when configuring newer multi-core environments

The new Limited Use Socket-based pricing options more closely match many deployment and production configurations. This pricing structure helps to lower costs for newer multi-core configurations. The pricing accommodates up to four sockets per server.

Updates to WebSphere Application Server V7.0 enhance simple web-server (HTTP) load-balancing and failover enabling:

  • Resiliency for a broader range of application server configurations
  • Simplified set up of load-balancing and failover scenarios
  • Increased number of servers allowed within these scenarios

The WebSphere Application Server V7 license restriction of two servers is now expanded to five servers. A new merge tool and documentation streamlines the task of configuring the load-balancing capability by combining the plug-in configuration files of multiple stand-alone application server profiles into a single configuration file. Simple load-balancing distributes HTTP requests across multiple WebSphere Application Server instances. Simple load-balancing can also handle failover of the application state that is maintained in HTTP sessions. Each WebSphere Application Server instance must be appropriately licensed.

In addition, the number of servers a single IBM HTTP Server plugin can route a request to has been expanded. A single IBM HTTP Server was previously restricted to routing requests to two servers. This limit is now increased to twenty-five WebSphere Application Servers (V7.0). You are no longer required to have multiple instances of the IBM HTTP Server to process transactions to your application servers. You can use a single IBM HTTP Server to pass transactions to the server. In this instance, the IBM HTTP Server is acting as a pass through only and not doing load-balancing or failover. Each WebSphere Application Server instance must be appropriately licensed.

Charge metric definitions

Limited Use Socket

Limited Use Socket is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A Limited Use Socket is an electronic circuitry that accepts a processor chip that meets the maximum processor cores per socket authorized use terms and conditions in the IBM Express and Middleware Licensing Guide at

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/smb/pdfs/LicensingGuide.pdf

A server is a physical computer that is comprised of processing units, memory, and input/output capabilities and that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications for one or more users or client devices. Where racks, blade enclosures, or other similar equipment is being employed, each separable physical device (for example, blade or a rack-mounted device) that has the required components is considered itself a separate server. A processor chip is electronic circuitry containing one or more processor cores that plugs into a socket. A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes program instructions, and consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic units. Licensee must obtain entitlements for each socket on the server on which the program is installed.

If the program is eligible for sub-capacity licensing, licensee may be permitted to license less than all sockets on the server. Sub-capacity licensing terms, conditions and eligibility requirements for Limited Use Socket-licensed programs are described in the sub-capacity guide at

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/smb/pdfs/SubcapacityGuide.pdf

If licensee's use of the pogram is not eligible for sub-capacity licensing based on these terms and conditions, Licensee must acquire Limited Use Socket entitlements for all sockets on the server on which the program is installed. The Limited Use Socket entitlements are specific to the Program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Limited Use Socket entitlements of another software program.

Processor Value Unit

Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU Table by Processor Value, Brand, Type and Model Number athttp://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores.

Licensee can deploy the program using either full-capacity licensing or Virtualization Capacity (Sub-Capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (see webpage below). If using full-capacity licensing, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/Counting_Software_licenses_using_specific_virtualization_technologies.html

* An Activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Notes

Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies: In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.

Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies: Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.

A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies: Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the Referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the Referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the Referenced program is licensed.

Express and Workgroup programs may be licensed with maximum use terms. In that case, the following applies: The maximum authorized use terms and conditions for PVU licensed IBM Express and Middleware programs can be found in the IBM Express and Middleware Licensing Guide.

Server

Server is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A Server is a physical computer that is comprised of processing units, memory, and input/output capabilities and that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications for one or more users or client devices. Where racks, blade enclosures, or other similar equipment is being employed, each separable physical device (for example,, a blade or a rack-mounted device) that has the required components is considered itself a separate Server. For the purpose of Server-based licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements for each Server which is made available to the program, regardless of the number of processor cores and/or partitions in the Server or the number of copies of the program on the server.

Notes

Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies: In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the servers managed by the program.

Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies: Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the servers managed by program.

This product is only available via Passport Advantage. It is not available as shrinkwrap.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty applies

Yes

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.
