Server is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A server is a physical computer that is comprised of processing units, memory, and input/output capabilities and that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications for one or more users or client devices. Where racks, blade enclosures, or other similar equipment is being employed, each separable physical device (for example, a blade or a rack-mounted device) that has the required components is considered itself a separate server.
A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processor cores or partitions in the server on which the program runs.
A switch is the unit of measure by which a portion of this program is licensed. A switch is a networking device that processes and routes information between different connections on the ports of the switch. A PoE must be obtained for each switch being managed by the program regardless of the number of line cards or ports in the switch.
IBM Systems Director Network Control uses per server and per switch charging metrics. A server license is required for the machine running the IBM Systems Director Network Control program. A license is also required for each switch and router being managed, based on its size and type. Switches and routers are categorized as small, medium, or large, based on the following categories:
- Small: Small switches are machines with a fixed number of ports that require 1U or 2U of rack space. This includes the IBM Ethernet Switch B48C, B48G, B50C, B50G, and J48E.
- Medium: Medium switches are modular machines that can support up to eight optional interface or controller modules. This includes the IBM Ethernet Router B04M, B08M, J02M, and J06M, and IBM Ethernet Switch B08S and J08E.
- Large: Large switches are modular machines that can support more than eight optional interface or controller modules. This includes the IBM Ethernet Router B16M and J11M, and IBM Ethernet Switch B16S.
The IBM Ethernet Switches and Ethernet Routers listed above are provided for information purposes and licensing guidance. A more complete list of supported IBM Ethernet switches is available at
- http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/director/v6r2x/topic/ com.ibm.director.plan.helps.doc/fqm0_r_support_for_network_devices.html
Licensing example: A customer running IBM Systems Director Network Control V1.2 on a Power 595 to manage a network consisting of 16 B48C Ethernet switches (small), two B08S Ethernet switches (medium), and one B16M Ethernet router (large) requires one server license for IBM Systems Director Network Control, 16 small switch licenses, two medium switch licenses, and one large switch license.
IBM Systems Director Network Control requires a keyfile to make the product operational after the 60-day evaluation period. This keyfile is sent on a CD-ROM after placing an order for the 5765-NCP product. This software license includes Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support.
Orders may be placed beginning with configurator availability.

|IBM Electronic Services|
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
