Description
Bottom rule

IBM Systems Director VMControl V2.3 provides management simplification, improves system efficiencies within the data center, and leverages the flexibility and power of virtualization for single systems and pools of cooperating systems. The decoupling of the client's workload from the underlying systems and the dynamic flexibility to move resources and virtual machines allows IBM Systems Director VMControl to provide significant value in managing today's complex and heterogeneous data centers.

IBM Systems Director VMControl V2.3 is a single package and plug-in for IBM Systems Director with a tiered licensing structure including basic, image management, and system pools.

New in this release is the support and enhancements for IBM Power Systems running the Linux operating system.

IBM Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition V2.3

Features added to IBM Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition V2.3 include:

  • A software development kit (SDK) containing Web-service programming APIs that allows for integration and extension by other data center management solutions
  • Continued and ongoing support for the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) industry-standard format for describing and packing virtual machine images
  • Server system pools for IBM POWER7 technology-based systems, providing:
    • Monitoring and system health within the IBM Systems Director dashboard
    • Simplified deployment of virtual appliances
    • Nondisruptive mobility of client workloads
    • Automated compliance checks for workload and resource availability
    • Dynamic placement of client workloads

The IBM Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition enables the capabilities that allow POWER5™, POWER6™, and POWER7 systems to be pooled together, allowing the pool to be managed as a single logical entity in the data center. With pools, client workloads can be deployed using dynamic placement and managed within the pool. With POWER6 and POWER7 pools, workloads can be deployed, as needed, to be highly available. Approval capabilities allow the client to approve proposed actions (like dynamic relocation) that the system pool deems necessary to keep in compliance with workload availability.

IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition V2.3

Enhancements added to IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition V2.3 allow virtual appliances to be:

  • Deployed, captured, and managed for Linux on Power and Linux on z/VM®
  • Managed in repositories including deletion, search, and version control
  • Captured from virtualized workloads

The IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition enables a complete set of image management tools that builds upon the capabilities offered in the previous release with additional tasks to search, delete, and manage virtual machine images (also known as virtual appliances) for Power Systems and z/VM systems.

IBM Systems Director VMControl Express Edition V2.3

Enhancements added to IBM Systems Director VMControl Express Edition V2.3 provide:

  • A complete virtual server life cycle management and relocation for VMware vCenter 4.1 platform manager, allowing for full integration into the IBM Systems Director capabilities for monitoring, automation, and management
  • A complete virtual server life cycle management solution for the Microsoft® Hyper-V V2 hypervisor, allowing for full integration in the IBM Systems Director capabilities for monitoring, automation, and management

IBM Systems Director VMControl Express Edition provides the user with cross-platform virtual server life cycle management. In addition, VMControl Express Edition provides virtual server relocation tasks for VMware on x86 and PowerVM on Power Systems. This includes the ability to create, edit, delete, and move virtual servers from a single tool in a consistent fashion on all of the supported hypervisors and IBM platforms.

IBM Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition V2.3 and IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition V2.3 are available under a 60-day evaluation license for test and evaluation. After evaluating the software, the client can purchase the program. IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition is included with IBM System Director Enterprise Edition for no additional charge.

IBM's flexible and dynamic infrastructure offers a broad set of virtualization technologies to help improve service and management, mask complexities, reduce operational costs, and maximize asset utilization. IBM Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition V2.3 further exemplifies the strategy for enabling management simplification and automation with IBM Systems Director V6.2. IBM Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition V2.3 allows pools of systems in the data center to be managed with single-system simplicity. Some of the key benefits provided by Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition:

  • A simple interface and set of management tasks provided to manage the life cycle and capacity of one or more system pools. Both new systems and the remaining capacity of existing systems in your data center can be added and managed as part of a pool.
  • System pool total aggregate capacity and utilization can be monitored and viewed in the IBM Systems Director dashboard as a new special type of system, eliminating the need to monitor the individual member systems.
  • Open Standard OVF encoded images can be deployed and dynamically placed on the most appropriate resources within the pool. Consideration for compatibility, workload capacity, and workload resilience are all used to dynamically determine the best placement, removing management complexity from the administrator.
  • Storage can be assigned to and associated with a system pool, allowing for dynamic provisioning and enablement for virtual server mobility operations.
  • Running virtual machines can be moved between the member systems within the pool with no disruption to the running workloads. Dynamic placement services are leveraged to help determine the target system, considering compatibility, workload capacity, and the workload resilience goals.
  • Increased availability and resilience can be provided on a workload-by-workload basis. When specified, Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition monitors the individual member system for specific events that allow system failures to be predicted and used to trigger the evacuation of the system.
  • Automation of management actions are configurable, allowing for incremental level of sophistication on a per workload basis. In all cases, the actions that are automatically performed by Systems Director VMControl Enterprise Edition are recorded within the IBM Systems Director Event Log.

IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition V2.3, based on the OVF open standard from Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF), helps enable a single unified view of all virtual appliances and easy deployment of new virtual servers based on virtual appliances.

IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition manages the life cycle of virtual appliances. It captures information from active systems and stores the information in reusable virtual appliances. IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition V2.3 also allows the import of virtual appliances from external sources (such as a vendor's Web site).

IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition provides image management for Power Systems and System z®, specifically for AIX® images (leveraging Network Installation Manager (NIM)) and Linux images on Power Systems and System z (leveraging z/VM). For Power Systems clients, IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition provides the ability to manage AIX mksysb and lpp_source images, and Linux images that can be deployed in a virtualized Power Systems environment. Clients who want to perform image management for a heterogeneous Power Systems, System x®, or System z environment will need to use a combination of Tivoli® Provisioning Manager products and IBM Systems Director products. Tivoli Provisioning Manager for Images and Tivoli Provisioning Manager for Operating System Deployment are available for Power Systems, and provide physical and virtual image management for x86 hypervisors.

Terms and conditions
Bottom rule

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for subscription and support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

The scope of IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition V2.3 and VMControl Enterprise Edition V2.3 Software Maintenance also includes support for the IBM Systems Director V6.2 management server on which the VMControl application is running. With this extended coverage, clients gain greater value from their VMControl software environment and are assured that they have support for VMControl and the prerequisite IBM Systems Director management server environment. This offering does not include support for IBM Systems Director V6.2 on servers being managed by VMControl. Software Maintenance for IBM Systems Director is available for IBM Power Systems via 5765-DRP.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
