IBM Systems Director Service and Support Manager
IBM Systems Director Service and Support Manager automatically monitors and collects hardware problem information and sends this information to IBM support. It also can collect hardware, software, and system configuration information, which may help IBM support assist in diagnosing problems.
IBM support representatives use system problem descriptions and service information to better diagnose issues with your systems. IBM can proactively assist you in achieving higher availability and better system performance, using the data that Electronic Service Agent provides about potential problems.
Service and Support Manager includes the following features:
- Places service calls to IBM automatically if the server is under a service agreement or warranty.
- Collects and securely sends scheduled system inventory and diagnostic inventory to IBM. This inventory information is available to IBM support representatives when they are solving your problem.
- Communicates with IBM using a secure connection using encryption and authentication.
- Includes the option to send e-mail notifications when a serviceable problem is detected and service request is opened.
- Scales to meet the size of your IT environment.
Service and Support Manager continuously monitors your system. You can receive error messages any time, day or night. You can identify potential problems that could affect performance or lead to an outage. All of this can help you achieve better system availability.
IBM Systems Director Transition Manager for HP Systems Insight Manager V6.1
IBM Systems Director Transition Manager for HP Systems Insight Manager is an IBM Systems Director plug-in. Using Transition Manager, you can discover systems that are being managed by HP Systems Insight Manager and smoothly make the transition to managing the systems in IBM Systems Director. Transitioned systems can be either IBM or non-IBM hardware. After the transition is complete, you can manage the systems using IBM Systems Director, which can provide superior systems management features for IBM hardware. Additionally, you can still manage the systems using HP Systems Insight Manager.
IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager (monitoring only)
IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager (AEM) V4.2 can effectively monitor the energy usage in data centers at the system, chassis, or rack level. Through monitoring of a wide range of equipment and use of power saving capabilities on IBM equipment, AEM can help analyze data center efficiency and save you money. AEM is positioned as a key component of IBM's energy-efficient technologies and services and is part of the dynamic infrastructure strategy.
AEM is designed to increase your capability to monitor energy consumption and improve energy use efficiency, which can potentially result in savings and cost reductions. AEM is intended to help you increase energy use efficiency by controlling energy use across the data center, negotiate competitive utility rates based on accurate energy use trend assessments, limit server energy consumption by capping maximum energy consumption, and perform server-to-server energy consumption comparisons.
Non-IBM, legacy IBM, and IBM Storage Systems can be monitored through PDU+ support. In addition, AEM can collect information from select facility providers, including Liebert's SiteScan from Emerson Network Power, InfraStruXure Central from APC, and Power Xpert and Foreseer from Eaton. Sensors from SynapSense, iButton, Sensitronics, and Arch Rock are also supported, in order to provide a view of data center environmental data and of equipment that does not have its own built-in sensors. AEM V4.2 can perform monitoring and management functions for all supported systems from a single console.
AEM V4.2 is designed to provide monitoring functions for devices that can connect to select PDUs. This enables monitoring functions for systems that do not have support for AEM; for example, older servers and low- and mid-range storage devices. When these systems are plugged into a PDU+ (a smart power strip), AEM is designed to be able to collect energy information from I/O drawers plugged into the PDU, providing a more complete view of energy used in the data center. New in this release is the ability to turn off individual outlets on the PDUs that support this function. This allows administrators to prevent the plugging in of unauthorized equipment in a rack. It also provides a way to quickly cut power usage in case of emergencies.
Power trending is a monitoring function that displays energy use for individual systems or groups of systems over time (in a graph or table format) to help enable you to understand energy use trends within and across your systems.
Thermal trending is a monitoring function that displays information on the inlet and exhaust temperatures for individual systems one at a time to help you understand thermal characteristics of your systems. Incorporating this data into one centralized software-based energy use offering allows finite and localized temperature adjustments within the IT shop to help reduce energy costs for cooling.
Support for facility providers is a function that retrieves information from Emerson Network Power's SiteScan application, APC's InfraStruXure Central, and Eaton's Power Xpert and Foreseer. Numerous attributes associated with the energy usage of power and cooling equipment can be collected, and made available through AEM. This provides a broader scope of energy information within the data center while including a view of facilities equipment. New is the ability to collect power topology information from some of these providers, as well as providing users with a method of manually creating relationships between IT equipment and the power and cooling equipment that supports it.
Power management capability (power capping) is not included in Systems Director Express Edition. Customers must buy a license for AEM 4.2 to manage power usage utilizing the power capping feature of the product.

Server is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. A Server is a physical computer that is comprised of processing units, memory, and input/output capabilities and that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications for one or more users or client devices. Where racks, blade enclosures, or other similar equipment is being employed, each separable physical device (for example, a blade or a rack-mounted device) that has the required components is considered itself a separate Server. For the purpose of Server-based licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements for each Server which is made available to the Program.
Socket is a unit of measure by which the size of the Server is classified. A Socket is electronic circuitry that accepts a processor chip. A processor chip is electronic circuitry containing one or more processor cores that plugs into a Socket. A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes program instructions, and consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic units. At the time of this announcement, the number of sockets available in IBM System x and Blade Center servers is used to define the size of the server for licensing IBM Systems Director Express Edition for x86. Licensee must obtain entitlements for each Server on which the Program is installed or managing. For single-system System x configurations consisting of two to four 4-socket nodes, Systems Director Express Edition may be ordered using the Large server charge metric.
The size of the server is based on the following criteria:
- Small Server: 1 socket
- Medium Server: 2 to 4 sockets
- Large Server: More than 4 sockets
Server is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user or client devices. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processor cores or partitions in the server on which the program runs or each server managed by the program. Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server.
Orders for new licenses will be accepted now. Electronic download ability begins on the planned availability date.
