Overview

With IBM Rational Host Access Transformation Services (HATS), you can create Web applications and rich client applications that provide an easy-to-use GUI for your 3270 applications running on IBM System z® platforms and your 5250 applications running on IBM i. HATS Web applications, including portlets, can be developed with an interface that matches your company's Web or portal pages, and your users can access them through their Web browsers. HATS rich client applications can be developed to run in an Eclipse rich client platform implementation or in the IBM Lotus Expeditor Client to provide native client applications targeted for a user's desktop.

With HATS, you can also create Web services that provide standard programming interfaces to business logic and transactions contained within host applications. These Web services can be reused as building blocks to develop new internal applications or to integrate with applications outside your enterprise. Your host-based business tasks can then be included in your service oriented architecture (SOA) solutions.

Description
Bottom rule

The IBM Rational HATS Toolkit is a set of plug-ins for the Eclipse-based IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform. The HATS Toolkit lets you develop a new application that generates a GUI for your 3270 and 5250 applications. Develop your new applications one step at a time, previewing and saving each change you make. Over time, or as quickly as desired, your HATS application can be streamlined, making it easier to use than the host applications whose data it presents, and possibly moving functions from the host applications into your HATS applications. Your new application can be accessed from a browser, portlet, rich client, or even a mobile device.

The development process for building HATS applications that are accessed from a browser, portal, rich client, and mobile device is similar. HATS lets you create a GUI suited to your business needs and standards. You can hide unnecessary information, organize data into tables, or display only required input fields. You can provide a drop-down list of valid values for an input field, change the size and location of some of the text, and provide navigation buttons.

After you have developed a HATS application, deploy it to a production environment. The HATS runtime is included in the HATS application, which can be deployed to a production environment, such as WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Portal, or rich client platform. Users interact with the HATS application through the HATS GUI and data is sent back and forth between the user and the host application.

Regardless of the kind of HATS application that you are creating, you may decide that basic customization is enough, but with HATS you can do much more. Examples include:

  • Use HATS macro support to provide streamlined navigation through multiple host screens
  • Take your users directly to the first screen that you want them to use, bypassing other screens
  • Use macros or the screen combination function to combine data from several host screens into one HATS GUI screen
  • Use business logic and global variables to integrate your host applications with other back-end systems in your enterprise, as well as with your business partners' systems

From HATS macros, you can generate HATS Integration Objects, which are Javatm beans that encapsulate interactions with a host application, and use them to create Web pages and Web services. You can also use HATS Integration Objects in Enterprise JavaBeanstm.

New in HATS V7.5

Visual Macro Editor tool:

The HATS Visual Macro Editor, or VME, is a tool for visually developing HATS macros. Macros are scripts that navigate through and interact with 3270, 5250, or VT host applications. Macros are used in HATS transformation applications and HATS Web services. Prior to the VME, it was difficult for developers to see the relationships of the screens that made up the flow of the macro. The VME addresses this by visually showing the flow of the macro and enabling the developer to position screens in a visual canvas and create new flows. The VME combines many of the features of the HATS Macro Editor, Host Terminal, and Advanced Macro Editor into one tool, and simplifies offline development of macros. It provides optional, automatic capture of screens as a macro is being recorded in the host terminal. It also allows flows to be copied between macros and provides drag-and-drop support for adding new screens. Although the VME is a replacement for the existing Macro Editor and Advanced Macro Editor, these editors are still available for use by the developer.

Features:

  • Full visualization of the macro flow, including visualization of entry, exit, and transient screens
  • Palette tools for adding new screens, adding actions, or wiring screens together
  • Drag-and-drop new screens into the macro flow
  • Associate screen captures with macro screens to facilitate configuring screen recognition and actions while offline
  • Copy and paste screen flows between macros
  • New "prompt all" and "extract all" actions to facilitate adding prompt or extract actions for every field on the screen
  • Integrated host terminal, which provides for the easy addition of new screens and visualization of playback flow to enable the developer to see the path taken through the macro during development
  • Visual wiring of existing macro screens (to define new paths in the macro)
  • Copy and paste of the macro flow image for use in design documents, presentations, e-mails, and so on
  • Wizard to create new, blank macro (enables a developer to create a macro offline and assemble using existing screen captures)

Note: The VME was originally delivered as an unsupported technology preview in HATS V7.1. In version 7.5, the editor is fully supported and integrated into the HATS toolkit.

Support for latest runtimes: Support is now provided for deploying HATS applications to the following runtimes: IBM WebSphere Application Server V7.0, IBM WebSphere Portal V6.1, and Eclipse Rich Client Platform V3.4.

Support for latest development environments: Support is now provided for Eclipse 3.4-based IBM Rational development environments, including IBM Rational Application Developer V7.5.

Note: The HATS V7.5 toolkit will not install on V7.1-level Rational development environments, including IBM Rational Application Developer V7.1, IBM Rational Developer for System z V7.1, or IBM Rational Developer for System i® for SOA Construction V7.1.

Firefox support for WebFacing applications: WebFacing applications can now be accessed by users of the Firefox Web browser. Prior to this enhancement, applications could only be accessed using Microsoft® Internet Explorer, thus limiting usage to clients running Microsoft Windows®.

Coexistence: HATS V6, HATS V7, and HATS V7.1 can coexist on the same development machine with HATS V7.5. It is also possible for HATS V7.5 to be installed multiple times on the same system. If you have multiple IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform offerings installed on your system, HATS V7.5 can be installed into each of them.

Migration: HATS V4, HATS V5, HATS V6, HATS V7, HATS V7.1, HATS V4 LE, HATS V5 LE, or linked HATS/WebFacing projects can be migrated to HATS V7.5. If you are a Host Publisher V4.0 or V4.01 user, you can migrate entire applications, or just the Integration Objects. Migration is supported from V5.1.2 or later for WebFacing projects (both Web and portlet).

Support for visually editing HATS rich client transformations and templates is no longer available in the HATS Toolkit. Rich client applications can still be created and developed using HATS V7.5, but transformations and templates must be developed using the Java source editor provided by the IBM Software Delivery Platform. HATS transformations and templates can still be developed visually using a prior version of HATS, and then imported into HATS V7.5. For more information (including possible changes to this plan) refer to the HATS 7.5 service release notes.

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Application transformation

IBM offers a complete set of application transformation solutions that can enable enterprises to extend existing applications to new users and to a service oriented architecture. These solutions can allow customers to improve the user experience, adapt for broader connectivity, and innovate by architecting applications for greater flexibility. Transforming the user experience typically requires the lowest level of investment. With this method companies can achieve a quick return on investment by creating a better user experience. Improving the user interface can improve ease of use and can ultimately result in lower training costs, increased customer satisfaction, and boosts employee productivity.

HATS is the leading IBM product for customers looking to improve the user experience of 3270 and 5250 applications or expose these applications as Web services.

Charge metrics definitions

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor families (vendors and brands). A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on the level or tier of all processor cores activated and available for use by the Program on the server. Some programs allow licensing to less than the full capacity of the server's activated processor cores, sometimes referred to as sub-capacity licensing. For programs which offer sub-capacity licensing, if a server is partitioned utilizing eligible partitioning technologies, then a PoE must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition where the program runs or is managed by the program. Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Terms or the program's License Information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms. The PVU entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another program.

For general overview of PVUs for processor families (vendors and brands), go to

http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_ for_customers.html

To calculate the exact PVU entitlements required for the program, go to

https://www-112.ibm.com/software/howtobuy/passportadvantage/valueunitc alculator/vucalc.wss

Authorized User

Authorized User is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. An Authorized User is an individual (named or unnamed) within or outside of your enterprise. The program may be installed on one or more computers or servers and accessed by the number of users authorized by the Proof of Entitlement (PoE). You must have an entitlement for each Authorized User accessing the program or any program component in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means.

Processor Value Unit

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program.

Sub capacity for selected middleware products

Sub capacity licensing on a per processor or per Value Unit basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer sub capacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager within their offerings so that you can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on the use of the programs on a continuous basis.

More information can be found on the Passport Advantage web site:

http://www.ibm.com/software/passportadvantage

Eligibility requirements for sub capacity licensing

To be eligible for sub capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub capacity terms.

For those machines running programs with sub capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub capacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a primary business contact is established for their contracts.

For more information on required and entitled license capacity, license requirements, and reporting, refer to Software Announcement 205-093, dated April 19, 2005.

If you order (this product) under sub capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub capacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process.) You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.

IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software is documented in the following customer publications, which are available from IBM Publications Center at
