Description
Bottom rule

A key objective of Systems Director V6.1 is to provide a consistent user interface focused on driving common tasks that is accessible through both a Web-based and command line interface for critical requirements of platform management that provides the ability to:

  • Discover, navigate among, and illustrate systems on the network, helping visualize detailed inventory and relationships among network resources
  • Identify problematic systems and help determine the root cause
  • Identify systems requiring an update and orchestrate the installation process
  • Monitor systems in real time and set critical thresholds to notify administrators of certain emerging problems
  • Configure settings of a target system and create a configuration plan to apply those settings to similar systems
  • Update installed plug-ins to add new features and functions to the base capabilities for managing physical and virtual resources

In addition to the simplified user interface, Systems Director includes new platform support of Microsoft® Windows® 2008 Server, Power Systems, System z, BladeCenters, and storage systems.

Systems Director also includes integration of virtualization management for basic support for common lifecycle management tasks throughout a virtual infrastructure. It also includes a full storage manager to enable discovery and management of low to mid-range storage devices. In addition, for enterprise integration-unified management services, a common agent and data schema are provided. Supported operating systems include IBM i, AIX, Windows, and Linux®.

Systems Director V6.1 provides a single point of management for all IBM Systems (servers and storage) including both virtual and physical systems. This single point of management Systems Director supports is a compelling differentiator for IBM Systems that can help reduce the overall cost of managing these systems.

IBM Systems Director's robust platform management capabilities integrate seamlessly with many leading enterprise management solutions and provide comprehensive platform management, enabling complete lifecycle management and platform provisioning of IBM Systems.

Systems Director V6.1 provides increased platform support through the addition of single system platform management functionality for AIX and IBM i. Systems Director V6.1 helps increase IT efficiency with the convenient integration of these robust platform-level management capabilities.

Systems Director V6.1 helps spur cross-system management consistency by representing agent information in a consistent manner. Regardless of the type of systems, the user interface delivers a single system view of the operating system and its related resources which consolidates system health information and also depicts common tasks like inventory and updates. IBM Systems Director Version V6.1 supports the following agent types: Agentless, Platform Agent, 5.20 Level 2 Agent, and Common Agent. Deploying target agents is easier than ever with Systems Director V6.1 as system administrators can simply leverage a new agent release management task via the Web-based console to distribute and install the proper agent and subagent packages to suitable operating systems. Storage also has agents but they are not classified using these same categories.

Using both IBM Systems Director and IBM Tivoli®, users can take advantage of comprehensive, industry-leading platform management and service management offerings, from hardware platform management through enterprise management.

Base plug-ins provided with IBM Systems Director 6.1 deliver core capabilities to manage the full lifecycle of IBM server, storage, network and virtualization systems. These base plug-ins include:

Product positioning
Bottom rule

Virtualization has transformed enterprise-class IT. Virtualized solutions unlock technological resources, such as processing power and storage, from specific hardware, redelivering them in a fluid form that can be allocated dynamically to business goals and strategies in real time.

Next-generation virtualized infrastructures, however, require next-generation management tools. Older tools generally lack the modern feature set and focus required to achieve the highest performance and most flexible response from virtualized solutions. As a result, the overall business value these outdated tools generate is also suboptimal. Furthermore, when different tools are used to manage different virtual technologies, management complexity increases. A superior solution would empower administrators to manage both virtual servers and virtual storage under a single pane of glass.

With IBM Systems Director V6.1, the underlying technical differences across different hardware and software virtual solutions can be viewed, allowing administrators to manage the overall virtualized infrastructure as one. Furthermore, through its next-generation feature set, extensible via a plug-in architecture, Systems Director V6.1 can help you accomplish more than ever before.

Through simplified management; faster time-to-solution in the event of a problem; potentially higher return on investment; a tailored fit between features, functions, and the specific needs of your organization; and an accelerated, more flexible response to changing business goals and strategies, Systems Director V6.1 helps you achieve the full potential of virtualization.

The cost of managing the IT infrastructure has become one of the largest and fastest-growing components of overall IT spending for many organizations. Virtualization helps address this cost through the consolidation of physical resources. However, it also adds complexity by creating a sharp increase in the number of managed virtual resources. IT professionals are seeking more advanced capabilities and tools for managing both their physical and virtual systems across multiple architectures and environments. Systems Director V6.1 is a significant new release for platform management. It provides IT professions with the tools they need to better coordinate and manage all of their virtual and physical resources in the New Enterprise Data Center.

Systems Director also complements and integrates with higher-level enterprise management software such as Tivoli. Systems Director, a hardware platform management solution, and Tivoli Software are complementary and can be used either individually or together to deliver superior end to-end IT management.

Systems Director's focus is on hardware platform management, health, and configuration to help deliver maximum system availability. It consists of a set of tools that provides granular hardware management information which can be passed up and integrated into Tivoli products, putting it into an enterprise and business services context. The IBM Tivoli portfolio of products provides a broader set of management capabilities than Systems Director and is more scalable for enterprise-wide operations. Tivoli products also go beyond hardware management and provide advanced, automated tools for managing software applications, networks, storage, and how IT resources, performance, and usage fit and with overall business policies and goals as part of IBM's Service Management initiatives.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Electronic Services is designed to increase system availability and automatically manage system support.

IBM Electronic Service Agenttm and IBM Electronic Services Web Portal comprise the IBM Electronic Services solution. IBM is dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to clients who use IBM servers.

Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, resulting in faster problem resolution and increased availability for your systems. Systems enabled with this tool "call home" to IBM Support, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at no additional cost. System configuration and inventory information collected by Electronic Service Agent can also be viewed by IBM Support for faster problem resolution.

The Electronic Services Web Portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This Web portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The newly improved My Systems and My Search functions make it even easier for you to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits:

  • Higher availability: Electronic Service Agent is designed to enhance your Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by offering faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Around-the-clock monitoring and reporting means no more dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night.
  • Security: Electronic Service Agent is secure monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. Electronic Service Agent securely transmits data via the Internet. Communication is one way; IBM cannot call into your system. System inventory information is stored in a secure database that is protected behind IBM firewalls. Access to this information is limited to you and IBM. Your business applications or business data are never transmitted to IBM.
  • More accurate reporting: Better reporting and automatic problem routing mean higher system availability and fix confidence. Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the service request, you do not need to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data may be run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles appended to the problem record.
  • Customized support: Using the IBM ID you entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and My Search sections of the Electronic Services Web Portal at
    http://www.ibm.com/support/electronic

My Systems offers formatted reports of hardware and software installed using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBM ID. My Search combines the function of search and system information collected by Electronic Service Agent to deliver advanced searching of the IBM technical support knowledgebase, with results customized to your unique system.

Subscription program numbers should be ordered individually with a quantity of licenses equal to the purchased quantity of licenses for license program.

Server

Server is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. A Server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user or Client Devices. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processor cores or partitions in the server on which the program runs or each server managed by the program. Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server.

To order the programs described in this announcement, specify the type model number, order type description, and quantity of desired licenses for the appropriate one-time charge (OTC) features listed in the tables below. A "media package" is a separately priced option offered at initial acquisition of program licenses. The maximum quantity allowed for a feature associated with a media package is one per type model order no matter how many licenses are requested on that same type model order.

Licensing

IBM Systems Director contains management server and agent components, and you are authorized to use the components on IBM systems. You are not authorized to run IBM Systems Director Server on non-IBM x86 systems. You are authorized to manage non-IBM systems that run Platform Agent and non-IBM systems without an agent. See the hardware and software requirements for more information about supported systems.

You are authorized to use management server and agent components only on IBM systems. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the program includes a license for up to 20 installations of the Agent component on non-IBM x86 systems. These 20 licenses for non-IBM x86 systems are not transferable and cannot be combined or aggregated. For example, if you buy two IBM machines and install the program on only one of them, you are entitled to install the Agent component on only 20 non-IBM x86 systems. If you install the program on both IBM machines, your entitlement is limited to managing 20 non-IBM x86 systems. To install additional Agent components on non-IBM x86 systems, you must obtain additional Agent component licenses from IBM.

You can purchase licenses from the Ready to Buy Web Page at
