Overview

IBM Rational® Asset Manager with asset-based development best practices enables your organization to efficiently govern and reuse software assets in an organizationally distributed development environment. This collaborative software development asset management solution helps you identify, manage, and govern the design, development, release packages, and consumption of services as part of a service oriented architecture (SOA) initiative or other reusable assets for various development environments.

Enhancements in IBM Rational Asset Manager V7.1 include:

  • Automation of asset creation: IBM Rational Asset Manager supports API asset operations from Eclipse and Ant and the ability to batch load assets. These capabilities make it easier and faster to populate IBM Rational Asset Manager with assets, and helps to ensure that asset metadata is kept up to date.
  • Asset life cycle and traceability:
    • IBM Rational Asset Manager V7.1 supports IBM Rational Team Concert and IBM WebSphere® Service Registry and Repository V6.1 and V6.2.
    • New integration with IBM Rational ClearCase® Unified Change Management (UCM) makes it easier to identify an asset's versioned artifacts.
    • New integration with IBM Tivoli® CCMDB V7.1.1 makes it easier for users to understand how assets relate to deployed operational services and release packages.
    • Enhanced reporting capabilities and graphical asset relationships make it easier for users to quantify the ROI of asset reuse and visually understand the impact of change.
    • New integration with WebSphere Business Modeler V6.1.2 empowers business and technical teams to share and understand the relationship between business and technical business process management (BPM) assets effectively. BPM assets can be found quickly, and checked if properly reviewed and compliant with business and technical policies. When changes are required for a new business initiative, impact analysis can be conducted in IBM Rational Asset Manager on existing services and other assets.
  • Governance: New policy management integration and reporting improvements help to ensure that policies are enforced and assets are compatible with enterprise architecture.
  • Enterprise architecture: New support for Asset Libraries and API asset operations support from Eclipse and Ant make it easier and faster to share assets that are compatible with enterprise architecture and IBM Software Delivery Platform.
  • Consumability improvements: Enhanced installation and setup verification, rich client improvements, new browse and download licenses, and improved large-scale performance help you use IBM Rational Asset Manager more productively and efficiently.
  • Collaboration: Improvements to communities, new integration with IBM Rational Team Concert, asset library support, and graphical search ensure that libraries of assets can be searched and shared across multiple customer or partner repositories with better communication, delivering powerful tools for knowledge management within distributed enterprises.

Description

IBM Rational Asset Manager helps you identify, manage, and govern the design, development, and consumption of services as part of an SOA initiative or other reusable development assets. You can access it through an easy-to-use Web client, as well as a Web services-enabled Eclipse client that extends the IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform portfolio. This makes it easier for globally distributed teams to collaborate on assets.

IBM Rational Asset Manager integrates with IBM Rational ClearQuest® and ClearCase to deliver a complete solution for managing and controlling software assets, automating and controlling development processing, and promoting asset reuse.

You can benefit from the tight integration with WebSphere Service Registry and Repository to offer full SOA, life-cycle governance — from development through deployment — with federated search capabilities. With the federated integration between IBM Rational Asset Manager and WebSphere Service Registry and Repositories, you can not only manage the development and delivery of services, but also the deployed services at run time.

IBM Rational Asset Manager, a development asset management repository, uses the reusable asset specification to define, create, and modify assets. It delivers asset-type-specific search and governance capabilities and measures asset reuse in development. It handles any kind of asset, including applications, components, patterns, software that runs systems and products, services, frameworks, templates, and so on.

Functions include:

  • Asset upload, download, update, and packaging with the ability to define asset types, categorization, attributes, and relationships between assets
  • Security and access control, offering fine-grained permissions based on groups, roles, users, asset types, and LDAP support for users and groups
  • Robust search capabilities that enable you to search using categories, facets, and keywords including binary file content such as found in Microsoft® Word and Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Custom workflow and review board capabilities with review and approval flow
  • Asset and repository usage metrics; reporting and process guidance including audit reports
  • Collaboration features that include discussions, e-mail subscriptions, and RSS feeds for search results and asset activity

Benefits include:

  • Reduces software development, systems development, and operational costs and improves productivity
  • Improves quality by facilitating the reuse of approved and proven assets
  • Integrates with other IBM Rational and IBM software tools including IBM Rational ClearCase, IBM Rational ClearQuest, and WebSphere Service Registry and Repository
  • Reduces compliance costs and effectively manages compliance and architectural integrity of applications

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

Rational Asset Manager is capable as of July 11, 2008, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT), containing details on the products accessibility compliance, can be requested on the following Web site

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.
