Description

z/VSE Version 4 Release 2 is designed to support growing VSE workloads. Planned enhancements include:

  • More than 255 VSE tasks. Among other advantages, more tasks will allow VSE clients to grow their CICS workloads, consolidate CICS systems, and ease the migration from CICS/VSE to CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA.
  • Up to 32 GB of processor storage for added value. That's four times the 8 GB limit in z/VSE V4.1. z/VSE V4 is not designed to support 64-bit virtual addressing or allow 64-bit addressing mode for user applications.
  • The Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool (SCRT) running natively on z/VSE. With z/VSE V4.1, Midrange Workload License Charge (MWLC) pricing with the sub-capacity option was introduced. VSE clients are required to submit their monthly sub-capacity reports to IBM for MWLC sub-capacity billing. To get their sub-capacity reports, VSE clients were required to send their monthly utilization data to IBM so that IBM will generate a sub-capacity report for them. SCRT running natively on z/VSE allows VSE clients to generate their own sub-capacity reports. This enhancement eliminates the requirement for VSE clients to send their monthly utilization data to IBM. The SCRT is planned to run on z/VSE Version V4.1, or later. Starting October 11, 2007, the details about the SCRT version, download, and usage instructions will be available from the SCRT homepage

For a detailed description of MWLC and sub-capacity pricing, including applicable terms and conditions, restrictions, processes, and procedures, refer to the z/VSE homepage

  • Support for selected IBM System z features, including the entry-level configurable Crypto Express2-1P feature of the IBM System z9 BC server. This support is also available for z/VSE V3.1.2, and later.
  • Systems Managed Encryption with the IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Drive (3592 Model E05). This support is also available with z/VSE V3.1.2, and later, with appropriate PTFs.
  • Support for the IBM System Storage TS3400 Tape Library as an autoloader operating in auto mode using the IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Controller. This support fulfills a Statement of Direction in Hardware Announcement 107-190 , dated April 18, 2007. This support is also available for z/VSE V3.1.2, and later.
  • Support the IBM System Storage TS7740 Virtualization Engine Release 1.3. z/VSE supports the TS7740 as a stand-alone system in transparency mode. This support is also available for z/VSE V3.1.2, and later.

Note: Items mentioned as being available in z/VSE V4.1 or z/VSE V3 may require the user to install additional PTFs.

z/VSE V4.2 plans to continue the focus on hybrid solutions exploiting z/VSE and Linux on System z, SOA, and security. z/VSE V4.2 helps you protect your extensive investments in existing VSE application code, data, IT skills, industry and company knowledge, business processes, and end-user training.

By leveraging existing VSE information assets and introducing modern Linux-based solutions that build on traditional mainframe strengths, you may be able to implement competitive new solutions with low cost, low risk, and fast time-to-market.

z/VSE V4.2 is designed to allow Fast Service Upgrade (FSU) from z/VSE V4.1 or z/VSE V3.1 using equivalent disks.

z/VSE V4.2 is designed to protect and leverage existing VSE information assets. It is the preferred replacement for z/VSE V4.1, z/VSE V3, and VSE/ESA.

Product positioning

A primary objective of z/VSE V4.2 is to help you protect your extensive investments in the z/VSE platform. A second goal is to help you integrate z/VSE into the overall IT network. A third aim is to help enable you extend existing z/VSE application solutions by exploiting and leveraging Linux on System z (or any other platform you prefer).

z/VSE V4.2 is designed to meet the needs of VSE clients with mainframe growth opportunities. System z growth may be generated by a combination of:

  • z/VSE workload
    • Added volumes, new users, and new or enhanced core applications
    • Associated IT activity such as application development, maintenance, test, backup, printing, and file transfer
  • Linux on System z workload
    • New solutions (such as applications based on WebSphere® Application Server, DB2 Universal Database®, Lotus® Domino®, and so on)
    • New line-of-business applications such as ERP and CRM
    • Infrastructure simplification, including consolidation of existing distributed workload (such as file/print servers, mail, firewalls, DNS servers, and so on)
    • Associated application development, test, maintenance, and so on

Statement of general direction

z/VSE V4.2 is planned to be the last release to offer CICS/VSE.

Beginning with VSE/ESA V2.4 (June 1999), IBM has delivered CICS/TS together with CICS/VSE at no additional expense. That practice is planned to continue with z/VSE V4.2. Enhanced BSM security in z/VSE V3.1.1 and additional VSE tasks planned for z/VSE V4.2 help reduce inhibitors to migration from CICS/VSE to CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA.

All statements regarding IBM's plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice.

Technical information

Preview announcements are made solely to provide clients with important planning information. Previews contain no dates or prices. However, the following additional information is being provided to give customers essential information to use in their planning processes. These statements do not represent a commitment from IBM. They are based on IBM's current plans and those plans are subject to change or withdrawal without notice.

IBM intends to deliver z/VSE® V4.2 in fourth quarter 2008. Customers are encouraged to avoid delaying hardware or software upgrades in the interim. It is suggested that customers consider proceeding with any plans they have to install z/VSE V4.1 in 2007. Similarly, customers interested in IBM System z9™ servers can install with z/VSE V4.1 and begin receiving the benefits of this appealing server solution in 2007. The Fast Service Upgrade (FSU) process is planned to be available to z/VSE V4.2 from z/VSE V4.1 and z/VSE V3.1.

Hardware requirements

z/VSE V4.2 will operate on these servers:

  • IBM System z9 Enterprise Class
  • IBM System z9 Business Class
  • IBM eServer® zSeries® 990
  • IBM eServer zSeries 890
  • IBM eServer zSeries 900
  • IBM eServer zSeries 800

z/VSE V4.2 operates in z/Architecture™ mode only. It is designed to exploit up to 32 GB of processor storage.

Software requirements

Many VSE clients choose to run under z/VM® for operational flexibility or to supplement the capabilities of z/VSE alone. VSE clients who choose to run one or more z/VSE V4.2 systems as guest systems under z/VM will require z/VM V5.2, or later.

For specific functions and for the most current information on z/VM, refer to
