Description

IBM Information Server

IBM Information Server delivers all of the functions required to integrate, enrich, and deliver information you can trust for key business initiatives. With rich functionality, broad connectivity to heterogeneous sources, and a unified metadata-driven approach, it provides a comprehensive foundation for enterprise information architectures, scalable to any volume and processing requirements and able to publish integration logic as consistent and reusable information services. IBM Information Server consists of the following product modules:

IBM WebSphere® DataStage® product module

IBM Information Server brings next-generation data transformation capabilities to the market with its WebSphere DataStage product module. WebSphere DataStage enables organizations to design data flows that extract information from multiple source systems, transform it in ways that make it more valuable, and then deliver it to one or more target databases or applications. It includes three key capabilities for successful enterprise data integration:

  • Advanced development tools that combine a "design as you think" Metaphor® with a library of reusable components to drive productivity and eliminate costly hand coding
  • Comprehensive connectivity to operational systems, databases, and enterprise applications
  • A scalable processing engine that easily handles massive volumes of data.

Key features

  • New metadata and services foundation: Metadata generated by any of the core product modules is immediately available to WebSphere DataStage without an import or export. Metadata services, designed with service-oriented architecture (SOA) concepts, enable WebSphere DataStage to provide a new set of analysis tools like the Where Used, Impact, and Object Difference tools, as well as new Quick and Advanced Find capabilities.

Benefit: The metadata and services foundation dramatically improves developer productivity, ensures that key transformations are consistently applied across projects to improve information quality, and simplifies maintenance and administration to reduce costs.

  • New transformation capabilities and deployment flexibility: The new Slowly Changing Dimension tool encapsulates all processing for building and populating a star schema and managing surrogate keys into a single component. New tools are available for estimating resources and analyzing performance. Job parameter sets have been added to make it easier to move projects through the development, testing, and production life cycle.

Benefit: The new release makes it easier for developers to collaborate and enables breakthrough performance and flexibility for integrating and enriching diverse sets of data.

IBM WebSphere QualityStage product module

IBM Information Server brings next-generation data quality capabilities to the market with its WebSphere QualityStage product module. Designed to help organizations understand and improve the overall quality of their data assets, WebSphere QualityStage provides advanced features to help investigate, repair, consolidate, and validate heterogeneous data within an integration workflow. WebSphere QualityStage provides core data quality functionality, delivered as part of IBM Information Server, to help improve the quality of the organization's information.

Key features

  • New user interface: WebSphere QualityStage is delivered in a new "design as you think" environment. This environment includes drag-and-drop features for the quick assembly of quality data flows.

Benefit: Usability is enhanced — for business and technical users alike. An intuitive palette-based interface is included for ease of construction, and multi-project folder views are delivered in an organized, Windows-based environment.

  • New metadata and services foundation: WebSphere QualityStage embraces the design concepts of common SOA; integrated, common metadata; and shared security.

Benefit: Integrated metadata and services ensure consistency and simplify administration across the entire IBM Information Server platform. These powerful services help to hide the complexities of distributed configurations and simplify administration.

IBM WebSphere Federation Server product module

IBM Information Server integrates next-generation federation and delivery capabilities with its WebSphere Federation Server product module, which enables applications to access and integrate diverse data and content sources as if they were a single resource — regardless of where the information resides — while retaining the autonomy and integrity of the heterogeneous data and content sources. This enabling technology is transparent, heterogeneous, and extensible, and provides high function and high performance.

Key features

  • Support for DB2® 9.1 XML: Enables users to combine native DB2 XML data types with data from other sources.

Benefit: Transparent integration of XML data with SQL data from many data sources will enable users to create a simpler view of their information infrastructure, reducing programming costs and enabling quicker delivery of needed business information.

  • Federated two-phase commit: Enables the data in multiple data sources to be updated in a single command without any additional middleware or complex coding.

Benefit: Supports business events that require synchronized updates to multiple data sources.

  • Federated stored procedures: Enables access to stored procedures at remote data sources.

Benefit: Enables any stored procedure already developed to be part of a query, saving the valuable development time.

IBM WebSphere Information Services Director Product Module

IBM Information Server provides a unified mechanism for publishing and managing shared services across data quality, data transformation, and federation functions, allowing information specialists to easily deploy services for any information integration task and consistently manage them. This enables developers to take data integration logic built using IBM Information Server and publish it as an "always on" service — in minutes. The common services also include the metadata services, which provide standard service-oriented access and analysis of metadata across the platform.

Key features

  • Automated service deployment for multiple information sources: WebSphere Information Services Director provides a single place to automate the creation and management of information operations (jobs, queries, stored procedures) as services across diverse information sources.

Benefit: Provides a common foundation for the management of information services throughout the enterprise, increasing consistency and reusability of information while maximizing investment in new and existing information sources.

  • Completely redesigned user interface: A new design console offers users an IDE-like environment to compose their services and a run-time console where administrators and operators can manage their information services.

Benefit: Rapid deployment; services can be deployed for data integration logic in minutes, using intuitive wizards that do not presume advanced J2EE knowledge.

IBM WebSphere Business Glossary product module

IBM Information Server provides a Web-based tool that enables business analysts and subject-matter experts to create, manage, and share a common enterprise vocabulary and classification system. WebSphere Business Glossary functionality is powered by and actively connected to WebSphere Metadata Server. This enables users to link business terms to more technical artifacts managed by WebSphere Metadata Server. The Metadata Server also enables sharing of the business terms by IBM Rational® Data Architect and WebSphere Information Analyzer, creating a common set of semantic tags for reuse by data modelers, data analysts, business analysts, and end users.

Key features

  • Manage business terms and categories: WebSphere Business Glossary provides a dedicated, Web-based user interface for creating, managing, and sharing a controlled vocabulary. Terms represent the major information concepts in your enterprise. Categories are used to organize these terms into hierarchies.

Benefit: Users can take ownership of business metadata by importing terms from external sources, authoring and editing terms in the Web interface, classifying terms into categories, and relating terms to more technical artifacts managed by the WebSphere Metadata Server.

  • Manage stewardship: Stewards are people or organizations with responsibility for a given information asset. Using the WebSphere Business Glossary functionality of IBM Information Server, administrators can import stewards profiles from external sources, create and edit profiles in the Web interface, and create relationships of responsibility between stewards and business terms or any of the artifacts managed by WebSphere Metadata Server.

Benefit: Accountability and responsibility can be assigned, supporting enterprise data governance.

  • Customize and extend: Needs around business metadata tend to differ from one enterprise to the next. For this reason, there is no "one size fits all" meta-model. In addition to being able to customize the entry page to the application, administrators can extend the application with custom attributes on both business categories and business terms.

Benefit: Administrators can tailor the tool to the needs of their business users.

  • Collaborate: It is not enough to simply document business metadata. This information must be alive in the enterprise, with open access to all. WebSphere Business Glossary provides a collaborative environment in which users can organically grow this important information asset.

Benefit: Users are able to add annotations to business terms and categories, as well as any artifacts managed by the IBM WebSphere Metadata Server.

IBM WebSphere Metadata Server

IBM Information Server provides the next-generation metadata repository that is fully integrated and common across all product modules, including WebSphere Information Analyzer, WebSphere QualityStage, WebSphere DataStage, and WebSphere Business Glossary. The metadata services infrastructure of IBM Information Server is designed to allow metadata to be more easily managed, accessed by those who need it, and shared across heterogeneous technologies through an SOA.

Key features

  • Unified metadata foundation: IBM Information Server leverages a unified metadata infrastructure to facilitate a shared understanding across business and technical domains for metadata-driven integration.

Benefit: This metadata foundation not only reduces the time between specification and build, but additionally provides a persistent record of understanding that can drastically reduce downstream project delivery times and improve overall insight and confidence in information. All functions of IBM Information Server share common metadata artifacts, spanning design and operational metadata, making it easier for different roles and functions to collaborate seamlessly to complete project tasks.

  • Actively shared metadata: Active metadata services and an integrated metadata repository help to make developers more productive, improve visibility and manageability of an organization's information assets, and foster collaboration across users of different information integration tools.

Benefit: Active metadata across IBM Information Server removes the manual burden of metadata management and improves project transparency across roles.

  • Role-based access to metadata functionality: Data analysts, ETL developers, business analysts, and subject-matter experts each have dedicated user interfaces with embedded metadata functionality such as browse, search, subscribe, and impact analysis.

Benefit: Role-specific tools for users from application developers to business end users enable alignment of business and IT, with common goals and a shared understanding.

  • For a complete list of platforms supported by WebSphere Federation Server, WebSphere Replication Server, and WebSphere Data Event Publisher V9.1, refer to 206-206 , dated August 22, 2006.
  • If you are installing the repository, domain, and engine on separate machines, each machine must have the same operating system.
  • WebSphere Metadata Server consists of the repository layer and the domain layer (see the following section).

Recommended hardware

  • Processor: 2.5 GHz (minimum required), faster processors are recommended.
  • Memory: 2 GB of RAM (minimum required), 8+ GB of RAM recommended.
  • When you install IBM Information Server, 50 MB of temporary files are added and removed after the installation process is complete.

The IBM Information Server architecture consists of multiple layers. Depending on the product module required by the user, different layers will be installed. These layers include:

  • Repository layer: A relational database that stores the metadata for IBM Information Server.
  • Domain layer: The domain is hosted by WebSphere Application Server and includes services that are shared across multiple Information Server components. It includes IBM WebSphere Metadata Server, IBM WebSphere Business Glossary, and the IBM WebSphere Information Service Director®.
  • Engine layer: The engine layer consists of the core components of the Information Server that do specific types of work. The engine layer includes IBM WebSphere DataStage, WebSphere QualityStage, and WebSphere Federation Server.
  • Client layer: The client layer enables users to interact with the Information Server and includes IBM WebSphere DataStage and WebSphere QualityStage clients, WebSphere Information Server Web console, and the IBM Information Server console.

Repository layer

  • IBM DB2 ESE 9
  • Oracle 10g
  • SQL Server 2005 (Windows only)

Notes:

  • DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition 9 is included with IBM Information Server and is an optional part of the installation that requires an additional 390 MB of disk space. If DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition 9 is optionally installed, it is only licensed for use with IBM Information Server.
  • IBM Information Server does not support the Database Partitioning Feature of IBM DB2 ESE 9 for use in the repository layer.
  • The database needs to have 700 MB of initial free space. With added projects and continued usage, additional disk space will be required.

Domain layer

IBM Information Server requires WebSphere Application Server 6.0.2.11. WebSphere Application Server is included as part of IBM Information Server and is an optional part of the installation that requires an additional 1 GB of disk space. If WebSphere Application Server is optionally installed, it is only licensed for use with IBM Information Server.

Disk space for the domain layer: 4 GB

Engine layer

WebSphere DataStage and WebSphere QualityStage requirements

Disk space: 600 MB

Compiler:

  • Windows: Microsoft Visual Studio.NET 2003 C++, Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2005 C++, or Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2005 Express Edition C++
  • AIX®: XL C/C++ Enterprise Edition 7.0, 8.0
  • Red Hat Linux™: gcc 3.23
  • SUSE Linux: gcc 3.3.3
  • HP-UX : HP aC++ A.03.63
  • Solaris: Sun Studio 9, 10, 11

For WebSphere DataStage MVS Edition:

  • COBOL for OS/390 V1.2.1
  • COBOL for OS/390 V2.2.0

Federation Server

Specified operating environment: WebSphere Federation Server is available as a stand-alone component as described in 206-206 , dated August 22, 2006, and as a product module of IBM Information Server. For customers requiring non-English versions of WebSphere Federation Server or platforms not supported by IBM Information Server 8.0, refer to this announcement for ordering and availability information.

Memory requirement for WebSphere Federation Server The minimum required memory is generally 256 MB. To determine the memory requirements for your installation, consider the following factors:

  • Other software running on the same server
  • Memory requirements of database clients
  • Performance requirements
  • The size and complexity of your configuration
  • The extent of database activity and the number of clients that access your system
  • Memory required to process the temporary tables and sorts performed by the federated server to avoid using disk input and output

Disk space requirement for WebSphere Federation Server: The total required megabytes of disk space can be determined based on the sum of the space for the components listed in the following table.

Operating Relational Nonrelational Installer
system wrappers wrappers

AIX 5L 5-20 5-20 5-80
Linux 5-20 5-20 5-80
Solaris 5-20 5-20 5-80
Windows 5-20 5-20 5-80

Additional disk space considerations:

  • Consider the amount of necessary disk space on the federated server to manage any temporary tables and sorts that exceed the available memory.
  • The disk space requirements vary depending on your configuration and the type of disk drive that you have. Significantly more disk space might be required on FAT drives with larger cluster sizes than NTFS drives.
  • Include required client software and communication products when you calculate the amount of disk space that is needed for your installation.

License terms

IBM International Program License Agreement, including the License Information (LI) document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

The program's LI will be available for review on the IBM Software License Agreement Web site

Charge metrics definitions

Server

A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user or client devices. A Proof of Entitlement (POE) must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processors and partitions in the server on which the program runs or for each server managed by the program. Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server.

Authorized user

An authorized user is one and only one individual (named or unnamed) within or outside your enterprise. A POE must be obtained for each individual user accessing the program in any manner. A program licensed under an authorized user POE may be installed on a single computer or server, and accessed by multiple users, provided that a POE has been obtained for each individual user accessing the program either directly or indirectly (via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means on behalf of the user.
