Archive Manager for z/VM helps you more efficiently manage DASD space while maintaining data availability for historical or infrequently accessed files. With Archive Manager, users have the ability to self-manage their allotted disk space and administrators can manage the retention of archived data based on business needs or external regulations.

Archive infrequently used data based on specific business needs

Using Archive Manager for z/VM, you can archive only the data you need to retain according to your specific business needs.

Archive Manager's comprehensive features provide the ability to:

  • Archive CMS files, or entire minidisks, to a choice of target media (disk or tape)

  • Produce track-image snapshots of CKD DASD which contains minidisks of CMS or non-CMS data
  • Create point-in-time snapshots of CMS files from minidisk or SFS
  • Archive files to a staging disk before they are placed on tape, allowing you to quickly archive data without having to wait for a tape mount
  • Archive, list, and retrieve files with mixed case filenames or filetypes
  • Perform detailed searches of files by:
    • Filename
    • Filetype
    • UserID
    • Disk address or directory
    • Date created
    • Date archived
    • Expiration date
  • Share access to archived files at the file level, share access to all archived files owned by a specific user ID, or share archived files with groups
  • Specify a retention period for archived files

Easy to organize and retrieval of archived files

For maximum efficiency and ease of use, Archive Manager's robust options enable you to retrieve files at the filename or filetype level and specify wildcard characters to retrieve files from the archive that meet specific criteria.

Manage valuable DASD space for maximum data availability

Archive Manager enables storage administrators to better manage DASD usage by providing the ability to define storage quota limits for end-users of the archive.

Provides comprehensive logging and error reporting

Archive Manager creates log files that record dump times, volumes and tapes used, as well as recording tape drive and sense errors. The product's comprehensive error reporting includes clear reasons for failure so you can minimize downtime.

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

Engine-based Value Unit pricing

Engine-based Value Unit pricing for Archive Manager for z/VM is designed to provide a decreasing price curve as hardware capacities and workload grow, which may help improve price/performance.

There may also be a price benefit when you grow your capacity. Additional capacity is not priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit. Instead, additional capacity is priced starting at the capacity (engines) on which Archive Manager has already been installed.

Note: Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

A no-charge Subscription and Support registration record will be established for each designated machine where Archive Manager for z/VM is running. These no-charge Subscription and Support registration records will be linked to the billable Subscription and Support and all billable Subscription and Support within the scope of the engine-based Value Units aggregation will be linked together.

Subscription and Support is an annual charge and should be kept at an annual term.

If you are a Direct Reseller - System Reseller acquiring products from IBM, you may link directly to Business Partner information for this announcement. A PartnerWorld ID and password are required (use IBM ID).

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate, but complementary, elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is a no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM.

Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
